You each receive a letter from Fola Barun:

Quote:

Pathfinder,

I hope this letter finds you well. I’ve been working on possibilities on expanding the Pathfinder presence in Minkai, and I believe I have found an excellent location for a brand-new Pathfinder lodge. I have recently learned that a small island just off the coast of Sakakabe Province called Kayajima is potentially located on a favorable convergence of dormant ley lines. We have reason to believe that if we could restore the island’s power, it would be of great use in protecting any lodge we would establish. Not only that, but the island’s diplomatic location in relation to Minkai, Xidao, and the Forest of Spirits would be a great boon to expanding Society presence in the region. I’ve secured approval from Sakakabe’s provincial government for this mission, so you should encounter no difficulties in that regard.

I have spoken to my protege, Kukuha Mukai, and have requested her to meet you in Sakakabe proper to travel to Kayajima to see whether it would be a fitting location for a lodge. She’s somewhat an expert in the field of ley lines, so she’s the perfect person to oversee this endeavor. Kukuha will be your point of contact for this mission.

I’ve chartered a voyage from a former Pathfinder, Masuhei Okonase, who retired from the Pathfinder Society to become an oyster fisher. He still helps out the Society from time to time, and he’s a great asset to have in Sakakabe. He knows the waters around Sakakabe well and will be ready to transport you to Kayajima when you arrive.

Best of luck to you,
—Venture-Captain Fola Barun

You arrive at the docks at the appointed time and have a few days at sea to get to know your fellow Pathfinders.

It was a sight that might have taken those few days to get used to, but seeing a pumpkin plant, its long vines stretching out to capture the sunlight in broad leaves on one side of the ship in the morning, but on the other in the afternoon was something to behold. More so when the main "stalk" of this plant was covered in metal splints fastened to a hardened leather shell through which its vines crept. And if this wasn't odd enough, perhaps it was the way it's "head" turned to look at you as you walked past, following you at angles that would have been impossible for most. But then it spoke and perhaps that shook you, its voice an unholy cacophony, with both bone-chillingly deep reverberations and skin- crawlingly shrill shrieks.

The young man with a bright smile and expensive Taldan clothes startles when the scarecrow starts to talk. He startles, but the large raven perched on the dockside lantern above his head does not. It preens its feathers and regards the leshy with a cold, unblinking eye.

The young man looks closely at the leshy, making sure it's not some sort of prank. Seemingly satisfied, he smiles a broad and easy grin and says "I like warm beaches better, but my dissertation has taken me to some chilly places. You've, uh, been to this Sakakabe, then? What's it like?"

A tall female elf glides onto the wharf, her closely fitting black leather suit with its lines of yellow gold studs(not real), is more a fashion accessory than it is armour. She is haughty and with a certain arrogance, "I've arrived." she sighs as she looks across the quays. A sweet smelling perfume lingers in the air as she flicks back her golden and red flecked hair. Her movements seductive and well rehearsed. Her hands move down over her body as though brushing away the corruption of dirt from her journey. As her hands move, they accentuate the slim curves and the white flesh of her breasts that appear suggestively from her close fitting leather.

She seeks solace and comfort as she fingers the leather whip attached to her black leather belt. She whispers in a sultry voice "Sting." the name warms her very soul.

A longbow made of finest elven elm, is flung over one smooth shoulder, whilst a dagger is held tight against the leather covering one of her long legs, a small thin black belt above her thigh like a garter keeping it in place. The soft red leather hilt with golden symbols sticks out of a sheath for a blade long, thin and ending in a deadly point. Her leg extends from firm and athletic buttocks tight in the leather armour.

It takes a second or even third look, to notice just above her breasts, moving slowly and seductively up and down, a small ornamental charm on a necklace, the charm is of a wasp.

She sees a talking plant dressed in armour and smiles, "I can keep most things hot, even in the cold." she remarks with another flick of her hair. She watches the effect it has on the man with the raven, she nods as she holds out a long slender hand, "Hornietelle, and you are?" she looks the man up and down, noting his fine clothes but his absence of weapons, so she turns her attention to the spikey plant, "And what should I call you? You seem ready to defend a lady's honour?" her hand reaches to stroke tenderly the plants vines, "You must tell me all about Sakakabe, for I have never been to Minkai, it's always exciting to learn something new."

She holds her head high and surveys the area, "Are there others coming? Once they are here we must find this Masuhei Okonase, or perhaps you already know him?"

Soon the commotion happens. Someone is yelling after an escaping figure. Soon past you darts a slender elf dressed in black simply yelling. From the brief sight of her, she is nothing like Hornietelle, her clothing hides most of her features or there are not that prominent.

"Comming though" she yells and she is gone.

Few seconds after a merchant runs past huffin' and puffin'. A few minutes later he walks past you resigned and tired.

After another quarter the elf comes back.

While eating an apple she says "You must be the other Pathfinders. My note says to look for extraordinary beings, and I must be damned if I ever before saw a talking pumpkin. " she says looking at Squash

"I am Merisiel." she nods to the leshy. Merisiel has long white hair from under which two pointy ears can be seen. She carries plenty of weapons, begging with a rapier and a short bow on her back. But also she carries plenty of daggers, she most likely could give two to each one of you and still have a few spare ones.

Unlike Hornietelle she smells not with perfume but apples and cabbages. Like if she would fall into a vegetable stand, which looking at the state of her armor she might have.

The trip to Sakakabe is uneventful (barring what you are getting up to on the boat).

Sakakabe bustles on this clear, humid summer morning. The constant buzz of conversation and commerce echoes over the concentric terraces leading up the hillside from the town’s port. Wagons clatter their way across cobbled streets, their wares bound for export on waiting cargo ships. Oyster boats are returning to port from the north, their nets filled with the morning’s catch. The air smells of brine and seaweed.

Fishers and merchants alike clatter across the pier, with shouted orders and affirmations traded from vessel to cart to street. Farther down, a beaming, older Minkaian man waves his burly, tanned arms from beside a rickety boat. “Ahoy there! Always good to see fellow Pathfinders in these parts. Name’s Masuhei Okonase, former Pathfinder agent and current oyster fisher extraordinaire! Good old Fola reached out and asked me to lend a hand, and I’m always happy to help out where I can.

“So, Fola tells me that you’re headed out to Kayajima to scout some ground for a new Pathfinder lodge? That’s quite exciting! We don’t get much Pathfinder activity in the area, and I’d love to see the Society have a more permanent presence here. Might even inspire me to pick up the old wayfinder again, ha!

“I’m ready to take you to Kayajima when you’re ready. If you need to pick up anything before we head out, the markets should have everything you could need. Just let me know when you’re ready to set sail.”

At this point, you may ask questions and slot boons. You can also make a Diplomacy (Gather Information) check to learn about Kayajima and a Society (Recall Knowledge) check to remember something about Sakakabe. You each have one hero point, and if you have any GM glyphs, you can hand out one to another PC for each glyph you have.

Please also add your information to Slide 3.

A dwarf in chainmail and carrying a small arsenal of weapons comes sliding down one of rigging ropes to the deck, seeing what must be other pathfinders... either that or this ship has a creeping vine infestation, a stowaway thief, a Taldan dandy AND some ‘company’ that a lucky sailor hired for the night or trip.

He lands on the deck with a thump, his mail ringing. Giving everyone a gruff look over, he extends a calloused hand to everyone in order. “Ionic Saltbeard. Sailor. Pleasare ta meetcha.” He pauses a moment coming up to Squash and pauses for a moment, clearly unsure how to handle a creepy talking pumpkin. “Ain’t been to Sakakabe. Don’t mind de cold. Last mission in Arcadia. Lots of snow. Nice if dis one warmer.”

He gives Irimiax a gruff smile and hand shake, before asking “Taldane? Ya drink? Got some good… someding from last mission. Made from berries. Good ta share.” He wrinkles his brow before looking over at Squash again. “Wait, can ya drink? It not poisonous?”

Next is Hornietelle. He extends a hand to shake up to the much taller elf, uttering his usual gruff introduction, seemingly unfazed and unresponsive to her enticements. “Ya want some too?”

The dwarf pauses as Merisiel scrambles aboard and skitters into hiding. He double checks that she doesn’t dive into some dangerous or important sailing equipment before shrugging and turning back to everyone else, pulling out a bottle of something sweet smelling. When the rogue finally appears out from where ever she hide herself, he gives her a flat look. “Hope what ya took isn’t too important. Drink?”

In Sakakabe, he decides to spend some time wandering around town learning about the local area, but also curious as to what is in the area.

Recall Knowledge is a secret check, isn’t it?:

Imirax, no problem with the shopping. You are in a fairly prosperous settlement before you leave with Masuhei.

Ionic, for secret checks, I don't mind either you rolling them in spoilers or just noting your modifiers for me.

Merisiel does not remember anything useful about this area, but Ionic points out that the stone walls that outline Sakakabe’s streets are
etched with reliefs of ancient warriors. However, they are now almost entirely hidden by modern architecture.

Imiriax adds that the creatures on the island of Kayajima are notably hardy and ferocious. Most people don’t bother testing the wildlife of Kayajima, and those who do try to take advantage of the free land end up retreating back to Sakakabe and licking their wounds after encounters with powerful beasts

Masuhei ponders for a moment, then answers. “Well, from what I learned back in my school days, the island used to host Sakakabe’s military forces. At some point in our history, the island was abandoned. It wasn’t worth the effort holding an island off the coast, so provincial leadership decided to consolidate forces on the mainland. Not many people make their way out there nowadays. Don’t think there’s much of value, and the silver and fishing industries are booming, so there’s no need to overextend ourselves.”

When speaking with Hornietelle, Merisiel says

"Calistria huh? Look Hornietelle, I don't say that they don't have the power. But it is a bit like joining a gang, they may aid you in survival, but essentially you are becoming a dagger in someone's arsenal. Could be of value but you are easily discarded when the need arises."

She says passing the fruits around.

"New dagger? I am in! You may never have too many knives."

Hornietelle is able to learn more about the area using her... diplomacy. Kayajima hosts many creatures that subsist off the sea life teeming in the surrounding waters. The griffons that live on the island’s mountain are noted for spectacular dives into the sparkling waters, and the creatures have a penchant for all manner of seafood.

Once your preparations are complete, you board the Auspicious Pearl, and Masuhei sets sail at once. The seas off the coast of Sakakabe are calm. The Auspicious Pearl smoothly cuts the gentle waves. Apart from the occasional squawk of a seabird, the only sounds are the wind and water against the vessel.

During the journey, Masuhei asks if you have any interesting tales to share of your exploits as Pathfinders. He retired to Sakakabe to continue his family’s oyster-harvesting business some years ago. The business is booming, but he does still miss the adventuring lifestyle and enjoys hearing about the goings-on in other parts of Golarion, mentioning that he sometimes gets that itch to travel the world, meet new types of people, and explore new places.

Kayajima is visible from the mainland in good weather, though its verdant forest and single tall mountain come into sharper contrast as the Auspicious Pearl nears the island. Masuhei docks at a rock pier in the southeast. “Hmm, I believe you’re headed to the fortress," he says, scratching his head, [b]"which isn’t too far inland from here. At least that’s what Kukuha said when I dropped her off. Should be a pretty straight shot, if I’m not mistaken.” He points out the path and bids you farewell. He informs you that he’ll be back to pick you up that night and merrily invites you to join him for a drink and some oyster soup when you return to Sakakabe.

Up the rocky pier and farther inland, a path winds into a stretch of cedar trees. The forest is tranquil, and the path, although partially overgrown with ground foliage, remains clear beneath the dense canopy. The ground is packed dirt and pine needles. An occasional rustle of leaves or flapping of wings break the silence. The air smells of rich earth and peat.

So they told me how they do things and then write things down. But I'm not very good at that. So usually when bad things try to hurt my friends, I make squash, which is how I got my name. But that's not all I do. I learned how to make medicine from plants. Usually I add a personal touch so that I can say I put a little piece of me in all my work."

Once they separate, Squash stays near the front of the group, looking for signs of these ley lines along the way.
