Hearing the cry of Zalona about the "undead!", the bard takes a quick saving breath of fresh, salty sea air and holds it in her lungs before rushing back down into the hallway. She comes onto the scene as Zalona is throwing up on her weapon and the waves of scent hit her once more, but the bard is steeled by the fresh air in her lungs.

"Where is the ugly sort? In there? Let me at them! Helgar, are you alright in there? Is it undead? Are you able to channel energy like those other healers I've seen?"

The slender, curvaceous, dark-skinned beauty seems to no longer be drained of color and actually quite spry--ready for battle. A trusted companion to be sure! If Zalona is quite well, she will spryly spring into the room with bow drawn!

”Survivors.” Helgar said. ”Survivors. And I can’t channel any more positive energy today. Can anyone heal them?” She asked, looking at Nempura helplessly.

When Helgar says they are survivors, Zalona says, still staring at the wall,

I have a healing spell left. It's only one, and it might not do much, but I can cast it on anyone you think has a chance of surviving. Just pull them out of there and I'll do what I can.

then she looked at her hands, imagining the blood that had been on them less than 5 minutes before... from a survivor. She'd let herself panic, and killed a man. Maybe it had been someone she could have saved, but fear had made her blind. All this time, and still blood on her hands... was redemption even possible?

The bard will pull out one of her chewing sticks, dip it in her water, and sprinkle some nice salty cinnamon-scented tooth powder on it so it produces a pleasant feeling in the mouth. Not only that, but will help their body restore itself. This way, they can chew on the stick and get some limited amount of water. Eventually, she can put some peanut butter on the end of the stick for them to ingest. Hopefully, in a few moments, one or more of them can speak.

"Can you tell us what happened here? Just two words?"

Nempura comes in ready for a fight, but Helgar quickly makes Nempura aware of the situation. When Zalona offers up her last healing spell Helgar knows that it would possibly comfort the dying woman of some of the pain, but the damage has already been done.

I’m altering your Knowledge roll and using your Heal roll for what your character would know.
Nempura begins looking over the woman on the ground. Offering her a bit of water brings a smile to her face, but her skin is so thin and dry that it causes her lips to crack in places and bleed. She still smiles at the taste and mouth feel of the water and powder.

Before she had tears of fear and pain, but now a single tear rolls down her cheek because of the kindness being shown to someone who is dying. Looking around this room… you all realize that this is where they have discarded those who became sick and left them for dead. It is hard to say how long the three…. Two remaining survivors laid in here among the dead and smell. Rats nibbling on their flesh but too weak to bat them away.

Nempura looks over the woman she is providing aid for and sees the darkening of the skin. Between that sign and the thinning and drying of the flesh she begins to think of what it could be. Prompting the woman; “Can you tell us what happened here? Just two words?” What could cause this…

A straining dry voice from the woman;uuurrnnn… hhhhhtttttt…

Ever so slowly since the woman has been examining the darkness has spread under the flesh.
vvvuuuuurrrrrrnnnnn…. Hhhhhiittttt….

Looking at the flesh, it almost looks like liquid is moving from her abdomen up to her chest.
bbbuuuurrrrrrnnnn…. iiit….

Pain takes over the woman’s face and eyes as her straining voice cries out; ’burn it!” as the darkness move up her chest and throat. Quickly blood and chunks of flesh bubble up and suffocate the woman’s cry. Life leaves her eyes as blood bubbles out from her.

Nempura reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Quickly as this is happening Nempura moves away from the blood coming from the woman, pulling those who were with her away at the same time.

Nempura:

I’m altering your Knowledge roll and using your Heal roll for what your character would know.
You are unaware of what this is, but you have heard of diseases that rot the flesh. This rotting flesh is happening internal. Something has caused this woman’s internal organs to break down causing the internal bleeding. The thin skin plus that internal bleeding has made the skin look to be darkening, when really is it blood pooling up.

You aren’t that medically incline, but you believe that this could be spread through wounds, and through blood.

Knowing there are others in this pile of bodies who had not erupted in blood yet, she calls out to them, waving hands in front of her mouth to push away the flies.

"We will not forget you. Your story will be told. Those who love you will not be without knowledge of you. Do not despair in these final moments. You go to meet great sights we shall not see for some time. We then will meet you there, and I hope you give us a good testimony."

She bears the scarf and the mementos, so they can see she doesn't lie.

"COme...let's finish up here."

Map of Sea Sprite

My assumption is that you are going into room 9 from room 11.

Approaching the door, you notice a slight breeze coming from below the door along with slight water sputtering. Opening the door, you see the storm outside pouring through a huge hole in the hull. With every crack of thunder, lightning lights up this chaotic room. Splinters of wood, broken furniture and so on are scattered all about. The legs of a man jut from under a broken table. The floor is slick with water, making it difficult to walk.

At the end of this room you see a man working to open the door. With each pull you see the frame cracking as the wood splinters with each pull. The man stops and slowly turns and reveals a rotting humanoid with blue-gray skin and black, unkempt hair. Its eyes are sunken and gray, and its hands end in razor-sharp talons with blackened nails.

DC16 Knowledge Undead:

You now piece together what you have been seeing on this ship. The deep claw marks on the back of the man in the Crew Quarters that had necrosis of the skin around the slash marks.

This unique creature is a Brykolakas, an undead aquatic creature. There are tales of the Brykolakas hunting down ships in order to grow its undead army.

You get 1 extra bonus insight on the Brykolakas for every 5 you go over the DC (21, 26, 31, 36, etc) Be specific in what you want. Offense, Defense, Special Abilities, Strength, Weakness.

With an evil smile, the creature speaks; “Rise my army!”

With those words the once lifeless bodies around you begin to twitch. Drawing your attention, you see the woman who just died start to rise.

Sea Sprite Map w/tokens

DC11 Knowledge Undead:

These aquatic undead creatures are called Lacedon. They are the spawn of the Brykolakas from those who he has slain. The Lacedon has wicked looking claws.

You get 1 extra bonus insight on the Lacedon for every 5 you go over the DC (16, 21, 26, 31, etc). Be specific in what you want. Offense, Defense, Special Abilities, Strength, Weakness.

Turning back to look at the Brykolakas, you see him shape change into an undead looking Manta Ray as it moves through hole in the hull and is gone.

You hear a scream coming from the door the Brykolakas was trying to break into. It sounds like the voice of a child…

Zalona:

From your vantage point you see the four bodies from the Crew’s Quarter (room 7) beginning to stir also.

You have a full round to react before these creatures have risen and we will fully inter combat. What do you do. I will be acting for Aris and Rhaedlaf

Zalona is too mind-numbed to be shocked by the new undead creature that she saw. Just another thing on the pile of horror that this trip had become, but she manages to say, for the benefit of the rest of the party:

Undead... seriously this time. It's a Brykolakas. That's what has the whole crew infected I think. There are more in the opposite room, stirring.

Seeing the new undead stir, somewhere in the back of her mind, the guilt at killing the man evaporates. It would have had to be done anyway, but the guilt at making a bad call out of fear stays.

What breaks through her deadened senses is the scream that sounds like a child, and her morose shuffling walk turns into a sprint to get to the door. She speaks through it, as gently as possible, although there is still an edge of concern in her voice at the situation.

Hey, my name is Zalona, and my friends and I just scared away the thing that was hurting everyone. Can I come in? We need to get you away from here quickly before it comes back. Are you alone, or is anyone else in there with you? We have a boat waiting, but we need to hurry.

She tries the door quietly.

--If the kid/survivor/undead monster in disguise unlocks the door, she opens it.

--If there is no response, she starts picking the lock and adds

If you hear some tools, that's just me trying to open the lock. I promise I'm just trying to get in to help you, and you will see that I'm not a monster before you have to go with me, but I don't have a lot of time to help you feel safe right now, I'm sorry. Nempura moves into the room where the Brykolakas fled from. Spinning quickly, she loosens an arrow that strikes it dead in the eye. Not needing to charge Helgar produces her silver Warhammer and delivers the killing blow to the one Nempura nailed in the eye.

With a double move, Zalona is almost able to get to the door and call out to the screams behind the door. Zalona receives no answer but hears commotion behind the door and the continuing of the child like screaming.

Aris takes a swing with her War Hammer as she follows the group into the room (9), but among all the commotion she misses. Zalona
Sitting and leaning against the wall contemplating what has just happened. Did I kill a person, were they already dead, could that have been saved, etc. flood your mind.

As you’re sitting there you realize the feel of air coming from under the door next to you, you also begin to feel sputters of water coming from underneath it. Which is odd on both counts, you’re below deck. Wind and water should not be coming through where you are.

You suddenly hear a scream coming from the room behind you that the water is coming from. But the sound suddenly becomes secondary to what you are seeing in front of you. Through the door (into room 7) you begin to see the [url=https://drive.google.com/file/d/13IUQaLBFtnKc8dMwDPv43xOgNvRwJ3ON/view?usp=sharingbody of one of the fallen crew beginning to rise.[/url]

Keep your role for this creature, you know what it is and that it is a Lacedon

Because of the retcon, I am assuming I have no idea what happened in room 11 after I left, so I was still traumatized with doubt. However, now seeing undead stirring and recognizing that what they are washes that doubt away without the interim self-hatred she experienced before (and she never offered to heal anyone because she didn't overhear that conversation).

Zalona puts a hand out and casts Close on the door she came from (room 7), hoping to delay the creatures, and then turns around, opening the door she is sitting in front of (room 9) to figure out if the scream came from one of her party members.

Arn and Helgar move towards the room that everyone went into, but it is full leaving Arn to “hold the door.” Too soon?

Those in the room (9) towards the front see the door open and Zalona pops her head in.

Arn and those towards the back of the room (9) see the creatures finish standing up and slowly move towards the party in awkward jerky motions.

Standing behind Arn, Helgar found herself with little that she could conceivably do. Seeing the hordes of zombies standing before him, she pulled out a rope, spoke words of power, and then threw it at the nearest of the undead.

Animate rope: The rope can enwrap only a creature or an object within 1 foot of it – it does not snake outward – so it must be thrown near the intended target. Doing so requires a successful ranged touch attack roll (range increment 10 feet). A typical 1-inch-diameter hemp rope has 2 hit points, AC 10, and requires a DC 23 Strength check to burst it. The rope does not deal damage, but it can be used as a trip line or to cause a single opponent that fails a Reflex saving throw to become entangled. A creature capable of spellcasting that is bound by this spell must make a concentration check with a DC of 15 + the spell’s level to cast a spell. An entangled creature can slip free with a DC 20 Escape Artist check

The childlike screaming on the other side of the door is still accompanied by a struggle within the room. Nempura is unsure what is on the other side. Could be a banshee, could be a child.

Nempura makes a brave move and goes onto the outside of the ship. Using the shattered hull as a ladder should be easy, but the rain and wind beating down on her makes it difficult. Not to mention the wood being slick from the rain.

Going to give Arn/Helgar a little bit of time this morning to move if they'd like before I jump onto the bad guys turn. Always be sure to make your moves when you make your attacks and such.

Arn seeing the oncoming hoard of Lacedons moved through the door and into the room with the rest of the party, shutting the door at the same time. Though he was able to escape the wrath of all of them, one was able to reach out and attack him with a bite as he fled. The bite strikes true and rips through armor and flesh alike. Arn is bleeding from his shoulder, but can still continue on. Arn takes 6 damage and is currently -7 HP from max

Zalona and Aris at one door, Helgar and Arn at the other lean in as they feel an onslaught of attacks trying to force their way through the door. Apparently aiming to break through blow by blow.

The door that Zalona and Aris are covering shakes, knob and hinges rattling but the door holds firm. The door that Helgar and Arn are covering does not weather the blows as well. The top hinge of the door buckles and the door pivots inward. A hand creeps in trying to take hold of the door. The bottom hinge is still intact.

The screaming voice in behind the door sharply cuts off and you hear a thump against the door from the inside followed by crying. No longer screams.

The storm outside rages on as the rain pours down upon Nempura who is now outside. From above Nempura sees three Lacedons run from the crew’s quarters and slam against the door in the hallway. They don’t appear to notice you from above.

With one door failing, what do you all do?

Nempura looks to the Jacob's Ladder. her plan of escape. It should be easy to climb, even in this weather. Now, so save all her companions.

"Hey you! Yeah, you! You ugly nasty-looking blood bags!"

She wants all those down below at the base of those stairs to know she is up there, and as a bard, her pipes can roar loud. As she yells, Nempura will pop up, and take a shot at the one closest to the door, making sure to gather their attention easily.

From there, she will duck back over the edge and then run to the ship's rigging and begin to climb.

Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

I am imagining there is a triangle-shaped rope rigging called a jacob's ladder up to the base platform of the crows nest on top of the mast. If the mast is that circle in between the stairs, then it should be right at her current position. She can climb 15ft as a move action. Her ultimate plan, is to cut the jacob's ladder when they are on it coming after her. Just to give you a heads up. Let me know if this scenario is different in your view (eg. tattered sails, no rigging, no mast, no Jacob's ladder, cracked mast, etc.). Typically this ladder would connect to a 5ft square platform, then raise up a climbable post to the crows nest. Her intent is to cut the ropes or undo them from their boat cleats and then fire shots from this height advantage.

Nempura can hear the yelling of Helgar from the room below, whether it was coming through the doorway or out the open air of the hole in the side and over the roar of the approaching storm. She yells back, "Use the table to bar the door!"

Interactive Sea Sprite Map

Nempura: You are correct in thinking that there is a rope ladder rigging that goes up to a crow’s next. But… I will have to say that due to the storm the PCs wouldn’t be able to hear one another around the side of the ship. The doors are all currently closed to the room where the rest of the party is.

Up on the Main Deck
Nempura shouts down at the Lacedon’s beating on the door at the base of the stairs. Letting an arrow fly, it sinks into the not so meaty flesh in the chest of the creature. They turn and look up the stairs and now are fully aware of an easier target, and they take chase after Nempura. Nempura takes flight and makes her way up the rope ladder. She makes it about halfway up.

Down Below
Zalona unlocks the door where they heard the screams then cries come from. Opening the door you see a mess of pots, pans, and other cooking utensils, along with scraps of food and other rubbish, covering the floor. But more critical you see a child laying on the floor crying. Across the room you see a Lacedon who is making his way after the child.

Rhaedlaf, seeing the boy and the Lacedon, moves forward and grabs the child by the cloak and pulls him through the door. “Shut it and lock it!” Rhaedlaf shouts as he pulls the boy into the already crowded room. If Zalona would like, she could use the other half of her turn this round to shut and lock the door.

Helgar moves out following Nempura as she starts climbing outside of the ship. She begins making her way up, but doesn’t quite make it fully there.Dwarf speed, climbing + difficult terrain.

Aris, realizing that Helgar left Arn to hold the door by himself, moves to aid. Nempura climbing up the ladder to the crow’s nest looks behinds her and sees three Lacedon rushing up the stairs and attempts to climb the rope ladder also. Their rush causes Nempura a difficult time to climb up the rope. Thankfully she is almost to the top. Just give me one more Climb check. DC 15. (Slippery ropes due to rain, wind, Lacedon’s causing rope ladder to shake.)

Ash Nempura is battling the ropes, she can see Helgar’s head from the side of the ship as she is climbing onto the surface of the deck.

Down Below
Wedging a dagger in the door, Arn starts heading up the side of the ship shortly behind Helgar. Wind and rain beat down on the two of them as they slowly climb up the splintered wood that is seconding as a ladder.

Those still in the room below hear the assault on the doors from the other side. The table and dagger wedged seems to be doing the trick holding off the hoard of lacedons. The room where the boy came from the group can also hear the single Lacedon attempting to get through the door also.

“I don’t know if this little one is going to climb…” Rhaedlaf says looking down to the boy he is holding. Shouting out to Arn as he leaves the room; “Send a rope down for the boy.”

Helgar tries to continue on but is unable to make progress due to all of the difficulties she is facing.

Aris moves to look outside of the hole and to where they need to climb... her eyes widen. Pulling her grappling hook free and lets out some rope and tries to fling it up onto of the deck. With a thunk you hear a "Yes" from Aris as she checks the stability of the hook. Appearing to be firmly in place she looks to Rhaedlaf and Zalona "Let us get to the top and we can pull the child up." She disappears off into the storm as she begins climbing up the side.

Nempura can't climb up in the rain. Evidently, her first sprint up the Jacob's ladder was some heroic feat, as now she is stuck with it wobbling and all she can do is not fall herself.

"Whoever tied this damnable ladder, you've doomed me! A$&~$&&!s! Bastards! I hope you fall off it yourselves," she speaks directly to the Lacedons below her, as it is a good chance it was one of them who made its lines too loose. It shouldn't move at all, even after having been in storms recently, being made for just such an occasion. "You probably flemished your rope quite ill while you weren't all grossified!" "What can you do Nempura?"

She looks about and notices the tattered sail of the midmast and its crossbeam. If only she could swing and jump there, she could probably be out of reach and then shoot these nasties. It is a better alternative than climbing or falling into the water. She gives it a shot.

She holds tightly with her legs wrapped around the lines. Truly, if the captain of the other ship were watching through a spyglass, he'd be proud. She looks like a proper sailor. Even more so as she pulls back her bow and takes a shot at the already injured Lacedon.

Once she fires, she takes a quick peek around. No sense in not having such a height and not using it for visual advantage in a storm. She looks to where the other ship is, the condition of her allies on the Sea Sprite, and the condition of the rowboat. Seeing them below, she doesn't holler at them so as to keep the Lacedons focused on her.

Zalona lights all of the torches, looking around in the limited space available for whatever looks to be the most flammable.

Unless something especially vulnerable catches her eye though, she grabs two of the torches and runs them into the corners near the rooms filled with undead so that the fire can lick at the walls there.

Coming back, she grabs four torches and moving forward, she scatters them around the large room. Room 5

Returning, she nudges the last two torches to opposite sides of the mast, hoping that central place will help the fire spread, and then she runs up the stairs to try to escape the inferno herself.

I'm guessing that is a total of 5 rounds (including the one where I lit the torches which you already described in the discussion). One for that, then one for the second paragraph, two for the third, and then one for the last. However, I could be wrong, so let me know if you think it is longer or shorter.
