Zalona was once a bright-eyed young elf, yearning for adventure and, being a little bit too hasty for her race, left home at 100 (still a teenager in elven years) to find her fortune. Now, 50 years later, she is trying to regain that optimism that she left behind. She, unfortunately, has a lot to overcome to get there. Her "adventures" took her into the seedy underbelly of human society, where she learned to lie, and to do it flawlessly, everyone wanting to trust her elven beauty, and so, perhaps too easily, she fell into a life based on deception and questionable, and sometimes overtly criminal activity, learning to be a very, very competent thief. Sure, she had her standards, but it was remarkable how flimsy they seemed to be now, looking back. She wouldn't touch slavery or drugs, and she would only kill in self-defense. And there had been times when even those were tested, and when she had found, years later, that some of her robberies and deceptions had actually driven people into slavery or suicide, well, she told herself then that human lives were ephemeral anyway. ... But it had eaten away at her, at her sense of self, and who she wanted to be. So, finally, she chose to withdraw from that life, study other things, and wait. She waited until the humans she had been involved with retired or died. Waited until no one was left to look for her or blame her for any of the past... and even waited until her ill-gotten gains were used up. However, in all her waiting, she still doesn't feel like she is worthy to return to her home or family. She has to do something to change things, to be someone nobler, better. To pay the bills, she started singing for money, and her powerful and melodious elven voice combined with her looks never fails to at least earn her food and lodging... and sometimes more, as she sings the stories of the elves with longing, and of her own life with pain. ... And so we come to today, as Zalona is singing in Languard at the Orc's Head Tavern, looking for something, anything, that will give her that opportunity for redemption.
