Ewan: Both the ground floor door and the rampart door have been barred shut. The ground floor one has taken minimal damage and won’t budge. The rampart door has been attacked a lot by Ivar and looks as if it could break soon. To get up there you’ll have to go up the stairs.
Helgar moves up and cast CLW on Ivar and heals him a significant amount. +9 HP Ivar (I am going to use Helgar’s previous roll)
Merion and Arren team up and use their arcane abilities to create an illusion of archers ready to attack. Arren: Ghost Sound is a 0 level spell that I will let you make concentration checks to continue for as long as you’d like. Similarly like Merion’s Silent Image
The Other Guys
Two more stones drop down from above, one missing Ivar, the other hitting Merion squarely but isn’t overly effective. -1 HP The archers in the windows continue to fire on Nempura and Albin. The attack on Nempura misses but Albin takes a bolt in the chest. -2 HP Other arrows continue to rain down from above through the fog, but no one is hit.
Top of Round 6
The fog is starting to thin out, you can start to make out the stone tower through it. You think that by the top of next round the fog will have been dissipated.
Ivar attacks out with his Bardiche. The door looks as if it is ready to give, but with the rocks dropping from above, maybe Ivar hasn’t been as effective as he could have been.

Hey all! Sorry, about the time away... I had internet, but with 15 of us in a house there wasn't much alone time to post... on the other hand, we did go salmon fishing and were able to bring back a ton of salmon!
Hey, I wanted to give everyone a heads up that we are leaving for vacation today for a week. I will have my computer and internet and expect that I will be able to post, but just incase I miss a day or two that is why.
@Ewan very cool! I had to do a little conversion being stateside and all. 150 miles! Solid trek. The trail that I was talking about here in America, the Appalachian Trail, is 2,194 miles (3,531 km). Which the average completion time is 5-7 months.
+6 HP Back to Merion for attack that would have missed.
Ivar’s second attack leaves the door’s iron bands beginning to break free from the wood. You can see the torchlight from within through the breaking door.
Nempura hunkers down in full defense If this changes because of the door breaking, please feel free to do what your character would do.
Albin moves up on the ground floor and fires an arrow at the window slit but misses, Findal double moves up close besides Albin.

Did that hit me even though I had +4 AC from Shield?
It would have missed! I will add your HP back. Thank you for reminding me.
Moving forward, when you have active spells/effects could everyone do like Ivar is doing with his rage? Just at the top of your post in an OOC write out what it is you have?
For those on the rampart, you hear sinking thunk of Ivar’s attack against the door. He pulls his bardiche free, but you see that he was able to cut into the door. You also hear from within; “reinforce the door!” the voice sounds like the man who called out Get them! earlier.
Nempura doesn’t see a person in the arrow slits, but she sees that reflection of light off the bolt head sticking through. Loosening her arrow, it hits off of the stone that makes up the small defensive windows.
Findal jumps down from the wagon and begins moving forward; “If we are going to last in this stand, we need to do something about what is coming from above.” Gripping his walking cane, Findal mutters a few arcane words that cause his cane to glow. A fog begins to appear covering the third floor and the roof of this tower; “It won’t last long, make it quick!” you can see that the wind with the rain is causing the fog to slowly blow away.
Attacks going through the fog receive a 50% miss chance
Albin moved down 30 feet and draws his bow and loosens an arrow at one of the arrow slit windows. But breaks at it hits the stone.
Ewan moves up and begins to aid Merion; “Let’s try to break through!” His rapier appears to do damage, but it looks as if it will take him longer than the time allows.
the other guys
In almost unison, you hear the clicking sound of the releasing of cross bows, they fly through the fog and even from the two windows on the 2nd floor that can see you. Bolts sink into the mud around the feet of those on the first floor and shatter as they hit the stone of the rampart of those on it. Two bolts do fly from the windows on the second floor, each one returning fire on Nempur and Albin. The shot on Nempura misses, but the shot on Albin hits -3 HP
Also from above two more stones fly through the fog landing around where the doors are. One misses Ivar and breaks apart, the second falls and strikes Merion on the shoulder. -6 HP

Rushing to Ivar’s side, Helgar chanted the words of reforging, to close the gaping wound left by the crossbow bolt. While she couldn’t heal it completely, she at least fixed the worst of it.
In round 3 Last round did Helgar move in front of Ivar to heal him these 9 HP, or are you holding onto this casting for round 4 current round?
I don't want you to lose out on a good healing roll.
But if anyone has any form of cover, you receive no AoO. Anyone outside of that very first opening square would get cover from you. So yes you saw it, but you don't get a clear stab because of the around the corner from the distance.
You are correct in the AoO & Killing blow. It doesn't change how things happened in the round for the tower guys. I did make a note that the one guy is -8 HP. Thanks for mentioning that. Always feel free to bring that kind of stuff up.
How did they shut the door w/o moving the body?
Great question, it all happened internally so you guys wouldn't have seen it. though I suppose you would see the body sliding away... that is my bad.
Here is the break down:
Guy by door: to archer "grab the body." (free action)
Archer: 5-foot step (Move) Pulled body (Standard). (He is around the corner so he has cover and does not provoke.)
Guy by door: shut door (Move), bar down (standard)
Ivar’s first attack doesn’t cause the man to fall, but it was a grievous wound. His second attack on the same guy causes him to fall and you can notice that he is no longer breathing.
Nempura loosens a few arrows, both of which fly wide.
Merion tries to disable the bar lock, but is unable to do so.
Ivar, Nempura, and Helgar then notices the door slam shut and the sound of something sliding behind the door. You could easily assume that it is the door bar.
With a loud crash, two stones smash into the ground besides Ivar and Merion. Looking up into the cloudy sky, rain falling into your eyes, to see two torches from above being held by two figures on the roof and a third figure between them. A female voice speaks out from above.
“Now that I have your attention… why don't you stop… whatever it is that you think you are doing. Look around you.” she pauses; “By now I have archers in every window, the doors are reinforced and IF you get through them my men are ready.” taking a quick glance you do notice the reflection of light shining off of bolt heads that are aiming from the arrow slits.
“I will give you three options. First, continue your attack and I will unleash the full force of my company and you will be filled with bolts and crushed with boulders before you break down my doors. Second, run away. Go back to where you came from and tell who ever it is that sent you, that I will not be stopped. Your third option is to form a brief alliance.” she pauses; “Go and clear out the house and the depths below, keep whatever you’d like and leave the structure for me. Those are your options…”
You are unable to see her, but you assume from the way she is speaking that this is Firean Maiethil

Ivar is good. He got the AoO, then on his turn he 5-ft back then attacked.
The only thing that didn't line up was Helgar's move/healing of Ivar. I also know Merion said he moved up towards the door but he was already there.
Just wanted to make sure all of us were referencing the interactive map before we take our turns. I don't want to do something that wouldn't have actually happened because the character was not there.
Hey guys, you really need to look at the interactive map, plan your turn accordingly and move your miniatures.
Helgar, I moved yours last round but if you take a look at where you are, you are unable to get to Ivar unless you move in front of him. I won't make that move for you, unless you want to be in front of combat. So as it stands, Ivar has not been healed.
Both Ivar and Nempura have acted this round, Ivar has 5-foot stepped, and where Nempura is would be at the top of the stairs and per the book is difficult terrain, so no 5-foot step.
Everyone please move your token because I base the NPCs actions on where you are.
I forgot that Ivar's weapon is reach. The one that is directly in front of you took a 5-foot step so no AoO. The second guy moved straight down the path and currently has partial cover. He would have provoked 5-feet to the right when he didn't have cover. Ivar gets an AoO against him.
Different types of cover don't stack. IE something cannot have soft cover (-4) and partial cover (-2) for a total of -6. It would just have the highest bonus.
The orange token guy has the proper feats and is figured into his attack modifier. The other guy that missed also has the proper modifiers/penalties figured into his attack modifier.
The only thing that I did not see was if Ivar has any bonus to his AC for any reason, but I did not see anything that would have changed that. (spells, class abilities, defensive stances, etc)
Be sure to move your token on the interactive map slide 4&5 depending on what you are doing. I don’t want to assume where you character is going and place them in a spot that you don’t want them to be. Be sure to use slide 4 for those on the ground floor and slide 5 for those who move up on the rampart and to the open door on the 2nd floor.
No perception rolls needed. Those who are on the ground floor Arren/Merion/Helgar/Ewan can easily see to the top of the rampart and the door opens and the shout from within.
Ewan move closer to the door on the ground floor and takes a total defense stance next to Merion, “We can’t all fit up there, but we can’t leave this door unattended and have them surround us. I can stay here for a presence if you want to join those up top.” he says looking at Merion/Helgar/Arren
Within the second story of this tower you see the two closes to you are clad in studded leather armor and have drawn their morning stars. Both attack out at Ivar. Ivar has partial cover from the second one due to the wall. Both attacks miss with one hitting the doorframe with his mace.
There is an older man standing in the middle of the room, clad in dirty studded leather armor, this disheveled human has a distinctly unsavory look about him. He aims a crossbow at Ivar and lets the bolt fly, and it critically strikes Ivar square in the chest. -15 HP Critical hit & I rolled an 8&7 on 2d8. The man in the corner also levels his crossbow towards Ivar but the bolt flies wide. The two of them reload.
Those on the ground floor see a bolt sink into the mud besides them as they see someone has taken ground in the arrow slit above their door.

Playing devils advocate… you guys did just storm up on this tower guns a blazing. Who knows who these people are. Lol.
Ivar tries the handle to the door on the second floor. It opens… it reveals a plain unassuming chamber that has eight bunk beds within. You also see four men rushing around that seem surprised as the door opens; “Get them!” one of the men shouts from the back.

You all look over the structure as things are happening. Because it is raining and dark outside, you can notice a few things. First, you notice the arrow slit windows. You see torches moving around from within. Second, you see that the stone walls are solid construction but the uneven surface does provide spots that look like they could be used as handholds and footholds.
Findal moves into the driver’s seat of the wagon, gaining cover from the rain but also is “out of sight, out of mind” from those who might be within the tower. Albin draws his blade, but also works to round up the horses in case there is a need to quickly flee. Ewan draws his rapier and moves to backup Merion as he examines the door more, but also be a bladed presence as Arren cast her spell.
Merion can’t really tell what he is hearing within. He has been around fortified structures enough to know that the walls and doors are thick and can distort what you can hear.
Merion/Ewan/Arren/Helgar hear a shout from the door; “You don’t sound like no goblins. Who be out there and what is your business? You might have us surrounded, but we have the higher ground.”

I have went ahead and made a slide in the Interactive Map. Let's rewind a little bit and go into rounds. Nempura just kicked the door and nothing happened. The group heard commotion within.
Round 1 (so far) - Arren cast Ghost Sound and made a bluff check. - Merion went to check the gaps in the door to see if he can jimmy it open with a dagger. - Nempura double moved to go to the second door on top of the rampart - Ivar double moved following Nempura
I know things weren't the most descriptive on my end. Check the discussion tab, I tried to help clear things up. If any of the above is not correct, feel free to retcon and move your character accordingly.
Hey guys. I want to apologize if I am not doing the greatest at the description of this place. Let me try to clear a few things up.

Mr Clint wrote:

I was under the impression the other door was the only one, but in all the discussion Mr Clint didn't say there wasn't another door, so if there is a door up here he will try open it. I'm assuming with rough terrain the ascension and attempting to open the door may be a couple of rounds.
On Monday I mentioned that on the rampart that there was a second door that leads into the tower. From where it is, your characters would assume that it leads into the second story of the tower.
Not to far from the ground floor door, you can see a set of stairs that will take you to the top of the rampart that will grant you access to that second door. Map showing stairs up & doors.
The group from the description was all around the ground floor door, so to get up to the second door it would be a double move. Stairs are difficult terrain and its on an angle.
Again, I apologize if I was not clear with this information. If you ever need me to be clearer, do not hesitate to ask.
Merion is +7 to Disable Device. I think that's all.
Since there isn't a disable device check I am going to rule that the knife trick, which is trying to disable a lock, does not work. Its a door bar, with the Str/Break DC I don't think it will be something someone can jimmy with a knife.
Helgar would know that her weapon is already the masterworked quality, she is skilled enough to know that. Feel free to save the spell.
@Ivar the door is just an iron banned door that, OOC, has a door bar on the back. There isn't a disable device DC but there is a break DC, when Nempura didn't hit.
To move from the ground level door to the second level floor it is a double move. Difficult terrain at the stairs + diagonals would force that for everyone. If this changes what Nempura/Helgar or anyone else would do this "round" please feel free to do so.
Nempura approaches the single door that leads into the tower and gives the door a firm kick to quickly open the doors for Ivar and party to rush in. But her foot is quickly stopped as the door doesn’t budge. You hear the raddle of a bar that crosses the back of the door.
In this moment, those who are close by, you can hear the muffled conversation on the other side stop followed by an audibly loud thud coming from within. Even those who are at the back of the pack can hear this.
We are loosely “in rounds” so keep that in mind as you all reply. What do you do?

It's all good. Life happens and its good to spend time with family and honor those mothers!
Merion cast Detect Magic and scans the area around the tower and the broken stones. Outside of any magic radiating off of those in the party, you detect no magic. If there was magic here at one time, it is long gone.
If anyone wants to do anything before you approach the tower door, please go ahead and do so. I don't want to stop anyone from doing what their character would like to do.
The party approaches the tower door – A closed iron-bound door pierces the tower’s wall. The door’s sturdy wood bears signs of assault-it is pitted and splintered and scorch marks mar its bottom portion.
With Nempura’s perception
You also notice a few more things. From the front rampart wall, you see another shut door that goes into what you can assume is the tower’s second floor.
On the ground you see broken stone that has blood on them. You realize that you could peace them together and they would be large 50-pound chunks of stone that have been dropped from above.
One final thing Nempura notices as she draws near to the door is muffled conversation happening behind the door. You aren’t exactly sure what is being said through the door and the rain, but you believe that you can hear two different voices. Because of the muffled phrasing, you assume that they are speaking common.

The maps for this world have been done very well. I've been excited for you guys to get here since you purchased the dagger/story. I would have been slightly bummed had you decided to not take it. Oh well, that is part of the fun of sandbox. It's a dance, learning to lead and follow at the same time.
As the party continues their discussion about what to do next, Albin leads his horse, Pepper, away from the party towards the caravan that is just finishing the load up. He begins talking to the driver of the third caravan, when an old gnome man exits through his sliding door behind the driver. The three of them strike up a conversation.
Strangely, I assumed that since Findal exited his wagon's interior through a 'sliding' door that he owned a wooden framed wagon, not a wagon with a canvas cover. Or did he come on a horse and he's talking about our covered wagon?
Sorry about the confusion. I went and looked and I wasn’t clear. HERE on April 8th I mentioned that Findal was on his saddled horse. I did not say that his wagon was with him but I also didn't say it wasn't with him... that was a mental assumption that I made. Sorry about that. He is talking about the party's wagon.
Ivar "Goldilocks" Theodinson wrote:
How wide is the entrance into the larger building in the northwest corner?
The two story structure to the north west has a set of double doors to enter. Your characters would not know this yet, but they have roughly 12 foot ceilings in there.
Can the players please give me the missing information?
Awesome! Good luck to everyone who submitted.
Sorry about the confusion on the "human," I assumed that we were originally from Kassen. So that would make us Nirmathains? I know historically they have ties to the Varisian & Chelaxian people, but they are free.
Albin smiles at Nepura’s questions; “Yes, there is much more to this complex. The stones you see here that make up the walls is the same stone that the halls below are carved from.” pointing to the two story structure; “I have been in the first level of that structure. It goes deeper, and it contains the undisturbed hidden vault that that dagger.” He points to who currently has the silver dagger; “came from.”
As dilapidated as the doors looked from afar, they are in working order. With a quick glance, it appears that someone has taken the time to fix the hinges. In the courtyard and looking over the area that might have once been the stable area you see that there is not a lot of protection from the elements there. The wind is cut down and shutting the gates will keep wildlife out, but the rain still will fall on the group.
Ivar brings up the idea having Albin and Findal guard the wagon and horses as if they aren’t standing there with the group; “As long as the rain doesn’t pick up too much, the canvas top should keep us dry.” Findal pipes in; “I’ll have my magics and Albin has his blade. Though I do wish we had a way to communicate with one another while you’re off exploring.”

Merion sends Robin up and over the walls. Everyone watches the bird go disappear from your sight. As you wait for its return you all see that the ramparts are empty, and the footprints in the dirt are both coming and going. You believe that the prints are fresh, maybe only a couple days old.
Albin nods at Ivar’s comment about bringing the guide; “Things are easy when you know where you are going. You would have been lost had I not come.” You do remember that there were several “paths” that shot off from the route you took that could have been something you may have followed.
As Nempura mentions being quiet as much as possible, Findal dismisses his light spell that was lighting up a broach on his shirt. With a flutter of its wings, Robin returns to the group. Merion does not know what it saw, but it gets the sense that there are no creatures on the other side.
As Ivar slides through the doors, he sees the courtyard in the above map. No people, creatures, or mounts. Knowing where the footprints are, you can track them through the gates and to the tower in the southeast section of this keep, then across to the two-story structure in the north west corner. From what you would guess, the northeast section that has collapsed might have been where the stables once were. You also notice that there are no horses or wagons here. If there is anyone here, they have traveled by foot.

Oh awesome! Where are you hiking at? Before my wife and I had kids we talked about doing the Appalachian trail, maybe once we are empty nesters many years down the road. Have fun, be safe!
With a full day's travel, could Helgar have rested in the cart to regain her spells? That would probably be a higher priority than her keeping an eye out
No. Partly because the owlbear was around midday and that is when you used the spells. But I also take the more next day approach, unless its during downtime.
It has been a full day of travel. If you are unable to get a good night’s rest, fatigue will be a factor tomorrow. As you traveled you would have seen Albin and Findal eat fruit and dried meats.
Taking in the sight of the gates and ramparts, you see no movement. It appears to be as abandoned it looks. As the rain continues to come down, the thought of shelter from the rain is a welcomed one. The gates are wide enough that the wagon could enter, they slightly sway from the wind with the rain.
The Ivar stops the wagon 20 feet from the gates.

You continue to press on, and the rain begins to fall. You eventually find yourself at the base of a bluff where the tress lightens up. You can see through the canopy that there is a stone structure a the top.
“There is a carved out path that leads up. Wide enough for a wagon, thankfully no more clearing.” Albin says as he puts his machete away and drinks from his waterskin.
As you zig zag up the bluff and break through the canopy, you see the woods stretching for miles. Being within the thick of the trees for so long has made you almost forget have far you have trekked.
Making it to the top you are poured out roughly 100 feet from a large stone structure. You roughly gauge the size of the keep, and you think that the front spans 130 feet by 100 feet in depth. Though the stone walls stand mostly intact, you see that the gate doors are broken in. You also see that the southern wall, closest to you, has a three story towner on its eastern side. From this distance you can just see a shorter structure, 2 stories, at the northwestern corner of this facility.
Robin flies off through the canopy of the trees and when she gets near the old camp sight she flies just below the tops. You do not get the sense that there is anything there, or has been there for some time.
Albin nods towards Nempura; “You heard the lady, we press on.” and he turns back to his work.
Findal pips in; “I mean no disrespect, but do you think we are in proper shape to explore ruins tonight? After the Owlbear and all?” Looking to the old camp; “That camp might have been empty, but there is still word of the outlaws from the wanted posters that are said to be holding camp in these woods. Possibly even in the ruins.” looking over himself; “I needed to say my peace, but I am good to press on.”
If the party presses on:

Its more of a clearing as you go to get the wagon through. If it was just the group on foot or on horse it wouldn't be as much of a necessity.
The conversations continue as the party moves on. Albin continues with the clearing of underbrush that would stand in the way. Looking up the tops of the trees block out most of the sky. But the portions of the sky you can see is becoming dark and overcast as it starts to rain. The “road” that was once there has completely been replaced by gnarled roots that slow down the trek. There has been a slight shift to the route, and you notice an incline that you are climbing. You continue on.
Atop his horse, Findal chuckles at hearing Nempura’s embellishment of Ewan’s name. “The Everlasting? It does have a ring to it. I am here for purely academic purposes, but will have to include that in my notes when it comes to findings that are linked to Ewan… the Everlasting.” He smiles as he goes back to paying attention to his horses footing and what might come ahead as the rain begins to fall steadily.
As Ivar calls to Albin the middle aged man takes a drink from his waterskin. "We should be there before dinner time." with the mention of food your stomachs remind you that it is well past midday by this point, even if the lack of sun doesn't make it clear. "Up this incline and we will have a break in the trees. Then we will have to work our way around the bluff and atop it will be the ruins we are looking for."
Sight Based Perception DC 12:
You notice a large rock jutting out from this portion of the incline off to the side. From where you are, it looks like there could have been a makeshift camp. It doesn’t appear that anyone is currently there.

Pulling his attention out of a journal he had been writing in Findal kind of gives Ewan a wide eyed look as he turns his attention towards him; “My boy, I have to side with Nempura on this one. Peaked my interest to say the least, what was your worst injury and what was it from?”

Arg! Dead links.. the image was similar to that. For statistics it was a Light Wagon that could haul 2 people and up to 1000 lbs of cargo/belongings.
As far as gear, people who have horses have saddle bags for their gear. Larger items like shovels, tents, or the legendary 10-foot poll would all be on the wagon.
Yes, I was envisioning butchering/skinning it when I was reading it.
If you are just debuting it to prevent spoiling, that would maybe take 15-20 minutes. Adult owlbears are around 1500 lbs. so it would take a little bit more than a deer.
If you are to quarter it and just take a section or two that would fall under the above time.
The difficult part is how much you can take with you, with the wagon you have pulled by 2 horses, it can haul 1000 lbs. So Decide how much you'd like to take vs what is already in the cart.
Anyone ever do any field dressing? Mr Clint how long would it take? I'll go ahead and post/roll in case we want to take the time.
I am no hunter so I called and asked someone who is. They said it can take an hour to properly field dress deer, so something as big as an owlbear I would say a couple hours. Less depending on the total check. But this would also be going on as people are being healed up and horses are being calmed down.
that's my bad. Keep me honest with my descriptions as we go and with the interactive map. I had previously described Helgar on a horse with no comment. All is well, disregard Helgar's horse being gone. It was all an illusion from the adrenaline in combat... yeah that's it...
