Was it that bad?
Prince Ellen
Out of our four PCs, three died. One (mine) was brought back to life as a new, hardier class with feats taken to increase her survivability; she died again. I believe we managed to get the worst ending as well, despite having done our best to do everything right.
GM TOP
OUCH!!!
That's just, ouch. Any reason for the bad outcome? Badly written encounters or rough GM or weak crunched PC's or bad matchups or other?

GM was great (he's actually the one that started me on writing notes on the chronicle sheets), but the encounters really left no room for anything less than great luck. Enemies were critting left and right off of mediocre dice rolls, even with the best armor and shield situations available.
We played it for high drama but it just is not fun to know that every fight you're walking into is like sticking your head in a blender and hoping the blades have dulled enough on the last few skulls it chewed clean through that you'll survive.
GM TOP
That is rough. I'll have to avoid that one then. Hopefully they got the balance down a little more for the ones we are doing, though obviously you all realized how nasty some fights can be even on Sundered Waves facing that last skeleton.
The group, whoever it is, definitely needs to have at least one, maybe two players that can spend an action or two to heal. There will be crits that take a player out and if they just lay there the group is a lot weaker.
PFS2 got rid of the 'AC stacked tank soaking all the attacks while dps unleash holy hell and the cleric pumps healing into the tank and no one gets below half health' stuff from PFS1. Often that tank build lasts 2 rounds, if lucky, then the boss moves onto the next target, taking it down round 3. If tank isn't back up into the fight or the boss dead, rounds 4 and 5 can be tpk. At least that's my experience with most encounters.

I've shifted my thinking a bit and am now thinking that I'll build a kitsune oracle, so I'll be able to do some healing (though honestly I think probably being trained in Medicine and have a healer's kit seems to be one of the few 'must haves' in PF2 for just about every character).
Let us know when you decide which mod you settle on so that we can build our PCs to the appropriate level.
I haven't played Plaguestone (or any of the modules yet) but I'm glad that the designers have made PF2 challenging. By the end of PF1 I found that there were way too many scenarios that were too easy for an even somewhat optimized group.
Of course, these could be famous last words! :-)
Prince Ellen
One thing I've learned in PF2:
If the enemies are melee-focused, let them come to you!
GM TOP
Are you all saying you DON'T want an enemy to get a full round of attacks off against one PC to open the combat? That's weird. I thought you all were tough.
:P
I'll take one more look into the two adventure/modules today, but I'm heavily leaning towards the level 2-4 one, cause then we can do the level 5 one and have a nice progression instead of going backwards. So, go ahead and start planning out a level 2 build if you want to get a jump start. Final confirmation of that will be later today.

[HORRIBLE WET CRUNCHING NOISES]
It’s okay Elle, just a few more minutes in the Level-Shaver! You’ll be Level 2 in no time!
GM TOP
Alright, purchased and downloaded Troubles in Otari. You start at level 2 but will be pretty quickly leveling up to three and then four so please have an idea what you will be doing with your character.
PFS2 Society Build rules with Kitsune Ancestry selected as the only exemption.
The adventure is in three parts and I expect each part will be about a scenario's length. At the end of the third part I'll report the game and you will get a 12 xp chronicle (1 level) to your preferred PC.
Everyone good with me recruiting a fourth in the general forum?
GM TOP
Starting Cash level 2 lump sum = 30g to buy stuff with. I'm not sure what will be gained in the scenario, but I may allow a full sell-off and rebuild each time you all level up, but we'll see.
Recruitment posted soon!

Welcome applicant(s)!
If you've never played PFS2 before, that's fine. This is campaign mode so you don't even need an existing PC right now and several players in the group are relatively new to pfs2. Anyway, I will be picking the player to join based upon your response to the following questions.
Why do you want to play a Kitsune?
What is your experience level with Roleplaying Games and Play-By-Post?
There are very few wrong answers, so just write your first thought in response to the questions, thanks!

"All the players are Kitsune" I mean I've got some pretty magical friends, and Jenny has that cool mechanical swishing fox tail... Oh, you mean all the characters are Kitsune... (This is what happens when I honestly answer my first thought.)
Despite many many years of Pathfinder I've never actually played a kitsune before.
I've been playing RPGs for a number of years that suddenly makes me feel old, Looking over my Paizo Profile I have just over 200 games listed in my previous campaigns section, so quite a few games played and GMed.

Haha yes, we definitely mean all the characters are kitsune! We are simply average human people enjoying normal human game Pathfinder Second Edition. No foxes here!
Apoc Golem
No foxes here!
YES I AM ALSO A HUMAN WHO WISHES TO PLAY THE HUMAN GAME
*tries very hard not to blep*
I've never played a kitsune either, which is honestly surprising for a number of reasons. Firstly, I love foxes, and fox-people by extension. They are adorable, playful, and are actually not far from dogs, genetically speaking. Secondly, I love mischievous or capricious ancestries like gnomes, ifrits, and such, so frankly the fact that I've never played a kitsune is shocking to me, especially since I've been at this whole role-playing thing for twenty years now. I would love to finally dive into this ancestry!
As a side note, I'm also very comfortable filling in party niches. Need a blaster? Healer? Tank? Mascot? Sous chef? I got you, boo.
GM TOP
It is Campaign Mode, yes.
Alright, I have made my decision. Thank you all for the wonderful applications.
Apoc Golem, welcome to the Skulk!
For the rest of you, I will definitely keep you first on the list for any future sessions. Thanks!
Apoc, go ahead and ghost dot into the gameplay thread. We can work out a character introduction at a later date, especially once we know what character you will be bringing (my vote is for sous chef).
GM TOP
Alright, that fits a bit into what I’m thinking will be a nice short introduction arc. I’ll get it up in gameplay... sometime over the next couple days (traveling both days so who knows when).
Apoc, we have a pun-chy monk, a rogue and an oracle as the other three (as far as I know right now). Plenty of options for you to find something that doesn’t overlap too much, though if you abide by the traditional group metrics, something arcanely would be a natural fourth. If course pfs2 and their archetypes allow a lot of coverage of skills and abilities via alternate methods.
Start as a level 2 Kitsune with 30g, society play creation rules. Questions are welcome.
Apoc Golem
I have a pretty good foundation so far, though I'll have to finish later. Right now I have that they're an elemental sorcerer (Earth bloodline; they have a knack for cooking truffles XD ) from Minkai. They have Arcana and Nature trained, and they can do a little extra healing thanks to the Natural Medicine feat. I also gave them the Celebrity archetype cause they're a sous chef specializing in meat pastries, and they have a small following in a couple of the bigger cities they've been to, including Absalom and their home city of Kasai. :)

Starting Cash level 2 lump sum = 30g to buy stuff with.
GM, just double-checking that this is correct? In a normal PFS progression you would start with 15 gp and earn about 14 for each scenario to get to level 2 (plus downtime earned income, but less any consumables used) so this seems a bit low but no worries if that's what the mod says or just what you want to do.
Jadren Tagar Z.
30 gp is the standard amount according to the CRB. PFS characters gain wealth a little faster than the standard, I think.
Good to know. Thanks.
Jadren Tagar Z.
Btw, I think I'm going to play a Swashbuckler instead of an Oracle. I just can't seem to find an Oracle build that feels exciting to me. This will likely change our healing options substantially so fyi everyone.
Prince Ellen
Good to know!
Ellen's ready to go now that we've got a budget (farewell, Handwraps; I hope to see you again some day).
Buuuuut we'll want to figure out healing, and if we come up short between us, I can figure out a skill to switch over to Medicine as a backup. I don't even get Wholeness of Body (a self-healing ki spell) until level 4 at the earliest.
Miyazaki "Dr. Truffles" Akimi
Actually since we have damage covered, I might take a different tack here and skip sorcerer. This brings me back to my original dilemma: chirurgeon alchemist or cleric of Shelyn? Both sound fun but cleric has stronger burst healing while alchemist has more heals for a smaller amount.
Or--and this one's a little harder to fit into the theme--I could go with a forensic medicine investigator. Something about a kitsune sleuth who can also heal pretty good is just super tempting.
Gah, choices! They all sound fun. :S
.... BUT I just realized "Miyazaki Akimi, Chef Detective" is maybe the greatest four words to ever be typed. I think I have to go with it.
Prince Ellen
CHEF DETECTIVE
Well, now you have to! Walked yourself right into that one. They're gonna be great, I'm certain :D
Devereaux, The Crescent Moon
|
Well, I have the character pretty ready to go, and then the site decided that wasn't going to be a thing tonight and ate it all.
The stat line should be done, and I will fix the rest tomorrow.
GM TOP
Glad you all worked that out, excellent.
As to the low gold, I believe that in large part is heavily due to the expected purchase and use of consumables the design team is accounting for in normal play. So 15g+14g+14g+14g is a lot more than 30g, but not if you drop 4-10g per scenario on flasks, trinkets, potions, scrolls, etc...
But then again, most players hoard resources so it doesn’t play out like they expect.
Miyazaki "Dr. Truffles" Akimi
Yeah, I'm too used to 1e where you have to hoard cash for the cool items that will help you survive. I almost never buy consumables because I always forget to use them. Most of my AP characters have so many potions/scrolls/etc by the end that I feel like they should be on "Hoarders."
I blame Final Fantasy.
GM TOP
Traveling again today, but hopefully an intro scene will get itself written in my brain so I can drop it in gameplay for you all.
Prince Ellen
"This is the FINAL BOSS, use an ether!"
"Okay, but I'm sure he's gonna have at least one more form after this one!"
"YOU HAVE 99 ETHERS"
Miyazaki "Dr. Truffles" Akimi
There was a great VGCats comic about how players' refusal to use consumables made Cloud look like a cheap jerk.
"She's dead! Use a Phoenix down, man!"
"What?? I'm not made of Phoenix downs! Those things are expensive!"
Prince Ellen
An old classic!
I think we're gonna get along juuuuuust fine~
Also: appreciate seeing enbies in the wild! Trans lady behind the hilarious pun idiot, here!

Word! "Pun idiot" is maybe the best self-descriptor I've ever heard. Being a parent, I have been deeply infected with the Dad Joke virus. I think some may bleed into this character. XD
