Hmm... the Master Sergeant is said to be known to be here by this time... Joli speculates.

Oltug wrote:
"By some, at least." Oltug grunts. The hobgoblin chef assesses the half-orc with his eyes, before continuing, "One day, I will get the chance to prove my prowess in battle. Until then, I serve as best I can. An army marches on its stomach."

"Well in my business, we have a saying: "one would be fool to utilize a fine rug as a doormat" - and where I come from, we tend to value skill in the battlefield greater than skill in the mess tent, not to disagree with you of course, but as word travels fast around this camp - doubly so during this auspicious time - your own reputation tells of skill at both, which could be seen as lost potential at your current deployment"

Oltug wrote:
Oltug involuntarily releases a chuckle, which grows into a belly laugh. When he realizes that Jolinaxus was not making a joke, he manages to regain his composure. "Yes, my apologies. I did not realize that you may be serious, Outsider."

Joli laughs with him (at himself) here - indeed what might be considered common knowledge in one context could easily be foreign in another, and despite appearances, the half-orc greatly enjoys the gap between taking himself very seriously, and well, not really much at all.

Oltug wrote:
"The Master Sergeant has the ambition, but none of the ability to succeed Lieutenant Eloqi." Oltug sneers. "While it is true that Lieutenant Eloqi has more days on the battlefield behind him than before, he remains capable. The Master Sergeant may be strong, but he lacks the skill and experience of Lieutenant Eloqi. The Master Sergeant would not be so foolhardy to invoke kalech-mar as to Lieutenant Eloqi. He covets his life too greatly to throw it away in such manner."

Joli intends to press him here, but not too much, for fear of over-stepping, having already been called an Outsider, and too, out of respect for the duty he has in closing out the mess tent before sunset "Oltug, what do you hope to get out of these negotiations tomorrow? I have my charge with my organization, and the consortium with their's, and the Lieutenant his; but what of you? Surely you have an opinion proportional to your stake in the matter?

GM - I would like to use my Hero Point to re-roll my failed Diplomacy check Here - I suspect Oltug to be an (unlikely?) ally in the coming negotiations, and would like another shot at making a favorable impression on him!

Libello's Notes:

Lieutenant Eloqi
-Hobgoblin, Male, leader of Oprak Camp
-To appeal to sense of protocol, designate one or two prolocutors
-Long-seeded distrust of humans, Aspis Consortium, Pathfinders
-Respects strength
-Willing to tolerate unsavory methods
-Will not tolerate violence within the camp
-Unless self-defense
-Demands things not be taken (no stealing)
-Threats of violence bring the trade talks to an end
-more likely to appreciate tales of the society coming to others' aid than ones of the Aspis hurting others - the hobgoblins are accustomed to the latter but would be impressed by the former.

Master Sergeant Morgroar
-Hobgoblin, Male, Second in Command of Oprak Camp
-Possibly threatened by Oltug viz Ogre Incident - rivalry
-Actively seeks to openly seize power from Eloqi
Master Sergeant Morgroar
-Chastises the cook - Oltug - every day @ noon and 1-hr < sunset
-Is the reason Oltug never got promoted for slaying an Ogre

Oltug
-Hobgoblin, Male, Chef
-Failed to be promoted by Morgroar - rivalry
-Potential ally if Morgroar needs to be quelled?!? (speculation)

Artennod Raike
-Human, Female, representative of Aspis
-Has six bodyguards and trusted advisor, Greeleep Muckfellow
-Arrived by heavy snowfall - buck lack appropriate equipment !?!?!
-Has necklace affixed with a glass vial pendant filled with ruby-red liquid and capped with a depiction of coiled serpent.
-Also wields an axe with the image of a kobold on it and is supported by a hunting hawk.
-Possibly in collusion with Morgroar?!? (speculation)
-Met w/ Eloqi once upon arriving (days ago) - Eloqi called them "weak"
-Zac spied her meeting with Master Sergeant Morgroar - also gave red-tinted vellum for small leatherbound book bearing a serpent motif

Greeleep Muckfellow
-Halfling, Male (?), Raike's advisor
-Unusual gait
-Cooking up something magic in his hut (Control Magic? - speculation)
-Never leaves
-making hats out of the skins of humanoids in the area?!?!!??

The Camp
-Fortiva observes an assortment of small craters that pock the camp’s defenses, indicating a number of alchemical mines were recently detonated.
-The camp where you have found yourselves, lies in an isolated valley within the Mindspin Mountains that lies not far from the border of the nation of Oprak. The camp's location was chosen because of its location with Oprak, its accessibility, and its defensibility. Wary of the delegates and looking to preserve her secrets and those of her nation, General Azaersi insisted that outsiders not venture too far within Oprak's borders.

...

Cultural Negotiation Norms
-Only "Prolocutors" speak (one or two maximum)
-Primal and Divine magic "only"
-Have multiple opportunities to impress Eloqi
-First @ formal introductions
-More @ once talks have commenced
-Last @ Final Bid
-Remain close together - unattended subordinates viewed with suspicion

Players - am I missing anything?

Marta will grab a few of the sloughed off scales as evidence and then sneak away before her spell wore off. If Raike or her people were making hats out of the skins of humanoids in the area, she surmised that's probably something that would not sit well with the hobgoblins.

Once they had some privacy, Marta would share her find with the other Pathfinders.

Save it. Oltug is not acting unfriendly towards you, he simply doesn't like the subject you've raised--namely, Morgroar.

"As for the negotiations, I want only what is best for my people and may nation." Oltug replies. "My role is simply to see that those in camp are well fed. Unfortunately, that's been made more difficult. I had to change my menu plans after some of my cooking supplies went missing a few days ago." The hobgoblin points to a sparse collection of alchemical supplies scattered among various cooking implements.

"The rest have gone missing." Oltug explains. "I suspect the Master Sergeant responsible. A further effort to taunt me, no doubt."

Kyra asks around about the mines, but gains no additional information. As the sun descends from the sky, her quick, cautious inspection of the area with the exploded alchemical mines does not reveal any signs of footprints.

Not at all being evasive ( ; P) I will say that Marta has a full round of actions that she can take before she needs to exit the hut and make it to a place nearby where the invisibility spell can wear off with no one being the wiser. Marta may stay longer, but at that point she would need to make a successful check to Sneak to avoid being seen by the Aspis bodyguard.

I believe I am still waiting on a skill checks from Martin and Zac to account for their actions before sundown, at which time, Drussem will come by and encourage the party to get its rest and avoid wandering around at night or else risk being questioned or possibly giving offense.

Martin overheard the discussion with Oltug, and moved closer to contribute. "Pardon my interruption, Chef Otug, but did you say someone in the camp deliberately stole food from the camp stores? "Be careful. Do not cast accusations against the other delegates unless you are able to support those accusations with substantial evidence." Drussem warns.

The hobgoblin woman pauses in thought for a moment, then continues, "Yet, even if the scales are evidence that Raike and her band slaughtered a tribe of kobolds, I cannot say what bearing it would have on the trade talks. As I mentioned earlier, tales of violence committed by humans against monstrous persons are commonplace. Adding another to the list is unlikely to alter Lieutenant Eloqi's position."

"As for advice on approaching the talks," Drussem suggests, "you handled yourselves well during the formal introduction. Keep it up. Be prompt. Speak with confidence and strength."

Advice imparted, Drussem suggests the party get its rest and notes that she will fetch you in the morning.

The following morning, just before the scheduled start of the formal talks, Drussem arrives as promised to collect you. She bids you assemble in front of the camp’s meeting hall, reminding Jolinaxus that he should continue serving as prolocutor to present the Society's position.

Upon arrival at the meeting hall, you find Raike, her bodyguards, and the halfling Greeleep, wearing the hat that Marta observed the night before, have all arrived ahead of schedule.

“Finally, we have the pleasure of being formally introduced, Pathfinders. My name is Artennod Raike, the Aspis prolocutor and representative of the Consortium,” declares a clearly self-assured, middle-aged woman. An impressive greataxe is slung over her back and a hunting hawk sits on a gloved arm.

Holding a full mug of a warm beverage in her other hand, the woman shakes off the bird, which promptly flies into the sky. As she reaches forward with a hand greeting, her balance shifts, dumping the full contents of his mug onto the ground.

“My apologies.” Raike smiles. “I hope that I didn’t get any

Everyone (except for Zac Freelan 2):
You realize that Raike's spill was intentional.

The spill provokes only a grunt from the hobgoblins who enter the hall first, then bid the delegates to enter.

"You are all more than just my eyes and ears" Joli assures his comrades before entering the meeting hall "Libello here, if you have a matter you wish to be brought before Lieutenant Eloqi, will provide you with a notepad and writing utensil, and can run it over to me, that I may be your voice" Libello nods here "That you may be heard while still upholding the local custom of having but a single Prolocutor in me"

"Furthermore - if needed - I will advocate for the necessity of conferring as a group before moving forward with any decisions - I trust that in abiding by their means of diplomacy, we needn't also reduce our organizational function to that of a dictatorship of one" he chuckles here, and ventures a joke "I'm afraid such a position of authority would disintegrate my sense of humor while inflating my ego most unnaturally!"

Whether or not his joke lands, the half-orc man and his orcish lawyer soon enter the room - before or after his comrades and not overly obsessing about exactly their manner of physical entrance - and strides directly up to his Aspis Counterpart with a genuine and non-judgmental smile, and it seems, a corresponding hand to shake, thrust forth with equal and opposite force.

"And my apologies if we kept you waiting" if it feels natural to do so, Joli will grasp with his second hand and reciprocate with a warm greeting "Jolinaxus Strangemuse, native to the Hold of Belkzen, warrior of the Battle of Nine Broken Skulls, and Pathfinder Prolocutor!"

Joli makes healthy eye contact with Artennod Raike, then turns his attention towards Lieutenant Eloqi, waiting for his cue on how next to proceed.

If he noticed the spilled substance, he trusts his teammates to worry about what it's implications might be, focusing instead on maintaining his composure, keeping his own good will radiant, but also poised like a mongoose on the lookout for snakes in the grass!

Understood. replies the cleric to their prolocutor.

The woman knows that the meeting will be more eventful than the previous one. The Aspis is here and the negotiation is conducted in open space. What will tell the Aspis? What will they offer? When will they lie? Because it will happen for sure. Are they for anything in the detonations of the mines in the last days? That weaks the defense. They should be aware from attacking Aspis members or even beasts they could have summoned. Especially of the negotiation goes wrong for their point of view.

And he does interrupt his comrade here as she lists her grievances after the first couple "You have made your point, Marta Sanz" hoping such an intervention will inspire her to save her best for when it counts!

Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

Marta has no difficulty enumerating various conflicts between the Aspis and the Pathfinders, including several illegal and illicit activities by the former.

As the party moves inside, they are greeted by some murmurs among the hobgoblins and a glance from Sergeant Drussem. For her part, Raike has a smug look of pleasure on her face as she is framed by her silent bodyguards.

Lieutenant Eloqi listens to Marta's words with a pensive expression, but does not directly respond. Instead, with a gesture, he offers the wooden chairs around the to Raike and Jolinaxus. All others are expected to stand within the cramped interior.

Once the parties settle in, Eloqi speaks for the first time. "I am aware of the reputations of both the Aspis Consortium and the Pathfinder Society. Each offers influence and potential markets that could, if tended, offer a benefit to the nation of Oprak. Were that not the case, General Azaersi would not have issued invitations to your respective organizations. I am also, well aware of the animosity between your two institutions."

At this statement, Raike shoots a glare at Marta, but the Lieutenant, his gaze fixed on two prolocutors continues, "But, I am not one to act on stories unless they are substantiated with proof. I have fought many battles, both on the battlefield and off of it. Accusations are like arrows."

Eloqi stands and places his bow on the table for emphasis. "
The untrained and inexperienced warrior blindly fires as many arrows as he can, in various directions, in a hope that enough will hit his foes to sufficiently injure them. But, a true archer is watchful. He waits, carefully considering the evidence set before him: the speed of the wind, the distance of his target, the thickness of his enemies' armor. Not until then, does he release the arrow."

"I have reservations about Oprak signing any trade agreement with either the Aspis Consortium or the Pathfinder Society. However, I must acknowledge that such an agreement with either organization could benefit Oprak. If our new nation is to endure, it must have more friends and fewer enemies than it does now, and at least some of those friends will likely have to be humans."

"I admit that, between your two organizations, I presently favor the Pathfinders." Eloqi concedes, "But, I have pledged to fairly consider both organizations. And, thus, I shall."

"To that end, let us begin." Eloqi continues, settling back into his chair. "As first to arrive, it is only fitting that the delegation of the Aspis Consortium be the first to speak."

"Artennod Raike," he says, gesturing for her to speak, "you may begin."

In response, Raike, the middle-aged woman with an impressive greataxe slung over her back, rises to her feet.

Perception to Seek (DC 18):
You notice that Raike’s glass vial pendant, which she wears around her neck, is empty. You also note that, next to the pendant, she is wearing a crude charm fashioned like a four-legged mammal or reptile. Raike's halfling valet and her bodyguards are each wearing a similar charm.

Raike opines. "Unlike the Pathfinder Society, the Aspis Consortium has, time-and-again, demonstrated an ability to get the most of out of cheap sources of labor."

"Yet, it is the fighting strength of the Aspis Consortium," Raike declares, "that is the organization's greatest asset. A fact evidenced by the Consortium’s ability to maintain and deploy its black-and-white-sailed fleets throughout the Inner Sea and beyond, the Consortium's means to field expansive, mercenary armies to any locale on Golarion, and it's expertise in deploying pinpoint strike forces composed of the most highly-trained Aspis agents."

"Not only does the Aspis Consortium have the willingness to do whatever is necessary to accomplish its goals," Raike concludes, "But, most importantly, it has the strength to do so."

Raike's conclusion is met by nods and low grunts of affirmation, not only by the other Aspis delegates present, but alsp by Master Sergeant Morgroar and some of the other hobgoblins among the assembly.

Lieutenant Eloqi nods as well, "Your assertions, if born out as true, suggest that the Aspis Consortium could, indeed, be a valuable partner for Oprak, opening new trade venues and ensuring both that our precious goods make it to foreign markets and that our rightful share of the profits finds its way back to our borders."

With Raike's opening statements setting forth the Aspis' position now complete, the party now has an opportunity to make a brief opening statement setting forth the position of the Pathfinder Society. Eloqi gestures for Jolinaxus to rise and say his piece.

As these talks formally commence, the PCs have an opportunity to again impress Eloqi or otherwise make some insightful observations. A PC who succeeds at a DC 20 Diplomacy check to Make an Impression can improve Eloqi’s attitude towards them by one step.

PCs who wish may Aid the check with a Deception, Hobgoblin Lore, or Merchant Lore check.

Certain that he must be missing something, Martin concentrates on his senses. Then, he catches it! The dark liquid settling into the ground where Raike had spilled it has an odd, metallic odor.

An odor that is akin to blood!

Martin took Joli and his nearest companions aside and murmured, "The liquid Raike spilled on the ground outside smells like blood. I don't know what she's up to, but that was deliberate. Also, see their necklaces with the bullette pendants on them? Something is going here. Of course she is going to talk about exploiting the weak and strength of arms. But, remember that holds for anyone they do business with as well. There is no loyalty or honor in that philosophy. The only ones that cater purely to the strong are those that have no problem with turning on their allies at an advantageous moment."

Joli listens to the opening remarks of the Aspis agent. He leans in close to Martin to listen, and nods "That is an excellent way to frame it - yes!".

He rises here, opening his arms wide "Honor" he begins "Is the cornerstone of any lasting relationship - especially one that involves business and trade. And the method by which my rival here would conduct such business would doom it to being short-lived."

He crosses one side of the room "It is a human's way of thinking: to extort the weak. And to apply the analogy of War to Trade is a poverty of thought. War is for tearing down kingdoms, and Trade is for rebuilding them. Their aims and objectives are opposite. And while I concede Reputation is a currency in both, it is the character of that Reputation that makes the difference. If you would traffic no further than the immediate political geography around you, then yes, take the deal with Aspis Consortium. But if your ambition is to build a truly grand empire, then instead, forge a deal with the Pathfinder Society. Our organization is known for it's fighting strength in matters of War, with the important distinction of also being known for it's economic wisdom in matters of Trade. Do not be short-sighted here." He crosses back.

And moves up to Artennod Raike, facing her "Though I cannot deny my rival's claims to might, I can also point out that you would inherit it's many enemies, and resultantly, the closing of many doors in terms of your desire to expand. For none will make treaty with those who would despoil it at the first opportunity. Such is their legacy. Instead, ally yourself with an entity for whom Respect has been earned by upholding their Loyalty and Honor, who would inherit no enemies to trade, and watch many doors open. For that is the legacy of the Pathfinder Society!" he turns to face everyone on the room here, ending his 360 turn by facing the Lieutenant, and smiling broadly, before returning to his position amongst his team.

Jolinaxus' words are clearly well-received by Lieutenant Eloqi and many of the assembled hobgoblins.

"Pathfinders--," Lieutenant Eloqi begins, before he is startled by the sudden interruption of the ground beginning to tremble.

An explosive sound is heard outside the hall. Clumps of rock and dirt pelt the structure’s door and northern wall. Cries outside make it clear; the camp is under attack!

Within seconds of the explosive sound, the hobgoblins and Aspis delegates respond, quickly drawing their weapons. Having rapidly arisen to their feet, they rush outside leaving you to promptly follow.

Outside, the ground continues to rumble as several giant fins poke through the earth and glide effortlessly through the soil. Dirt throughout the camp explodes in showers of roots and rocks as multiple, mighty beasts erupt from the earth. Covered in huge, gray armored plates, each sports an armored crest, much like that of a shark’s fin, along its back.

Martin readily confirms that these creatures are bulettes!
Image of bulette now on Slides.

The hobgoblins instinctively draw their weapons, preparing for battle, even as three of the creatures charge towards them. Eloqi follows-up, leading his forces into combat against the attackers.

“These beasts have chosen the wrong prey!” Drussem declares as she draws her blade. “Keep those claws and jaws at bay! I will see to my compatriots, then come to your aid!”

To the east of you, the hobgoblin forces confront a trio of the creatures. To your south, the Aspis agents are already facing off against two more.

Yet another bulette (red), the one that Drussem had motioned towards, is heading towards you!

Yes, Zac would have entered combat armed if possible, ie. carrying his weapon in hand. power attack starknife of striking: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17 dmg: 3d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 2, 2) + 4 = 11

if the starknife crits deadly d6: 1d6 ⇒ 1 and of course the creature will take bleed damage. Oh, with a nat 1, probably not, but with a +16 to hit, being a master, I figured it was likely.

I think it reasonable that the PCs have their weapons drawn before they rushed outside.
