Know. Arcana 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (1) + 19 = 20
Know. History 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30
”Wow....this panel and these rectangles seem to be the power source for this whole complex,” the witch tells the group as she inspects it.
”Oh boy, this is a doozy. I think we have a clue here. Listen closely. There’s an allegory here, so here it is. ‘At the dawn of time, the fires burned until rain quenched their fury down into solid stone, which has always gazed upon the sky above in envy. Demonstrate obedience to the ancient elemental ordering.”

![]() |

”I think that’s it. Or Fire, cold, acid, and electricity, depending on the way you look at it.”

![]() |

I’ve got a number of alchemical agents, but let’s say we agree on the order, what then?
Linguistics 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (6) + 18 = 24
History 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

![]() |

Vincenzo attempts to manipulate the runes. Do they turn, slide, spin, etc? He’ll use the agreed-upon order each time: Fire, water, earth, air
What happens when they are touched?
”Who of you can detect magic? Knowing the school might help.

![]() |

Tess offers to cast Detect Magic, hoping it might aid the cause.
”Put them in the correct order and let’s pay obedience. Can someone light a torch and touch it to the red square? Maybe something will happen to let us know we are on the right track,. Worst case, we lose a torch.”

cmlobue |

The runes are on rectangular pieces 2 feet long, 6 inches wide and 1 inch thick. It is clear that they would fit into the indentation in the wall. You can handle them like any object of that size, but other than glowing, they do not do anything on their own.
Each of the plates has a lingering magic aura. It feels as if something needs to be added to them to make them operate.

![]() |

”I don’t usually bother, because I can see in the dark. This might do, though.”
Vincenzo retrieves an alchemist’s fire and ignites the matching rune stone. He isn’t too bothered by it being on fire, he’s also fire resistant as a result of his heritage. He does remove his cloak first, just to keep it out of the way, handing it to Tess. It also detects as magical.

cmlobue |

When the fire strikes the red stone, it begins to glow more brightly. Lights at regular distance along the walls also illuminate. Tessara observes these and sees that they are continual flame effects.

![]() |

Vincenzo will try and place the fire stone where it belongs.
is it obvious, like a child’s toy or not?
”Can any of you conjure cold? I can do the others.”

cmlobue |

The inscription is the only clue as to how to insert the tablets.

![]() |

[B]”So, my guess is that sky goes on top, followed by water, fire, and stone on the bottom, as per the riddle. Anything on cold damage?”
Vincenzo looks to see if fire can be placed first, or if it will fall.

cmlobue |

The blue stone begins to glow brighter, and you hear the sound of running water from somewhere to the south.

![]() |

Tess opens up a vial of acid, and rains down a few droplets on the earthen plate.

cmlobue |

The plate does not react to the acid.

![]() |

She then tries to pour a handful of dirt on the earth plate.

cmlobue |

The plate glows brighter and you hear a grinding noise from below.

![]() |

”The only possible lightning spell I know is lightning bolt. I’d hate to waste such a powerful spell though. Do you all have any other ideas?”.
She waits for the others, but if no one has a better idea, she moved everyone out of the way and used her spell on the air square.

![]() |

”Save your spell, i have a few lightning drafts left. They proved useful In Numeria, last I was there, fighting metal men.”
Vincenzo uses a flask of bottled lightning on the stone, and then snaps it into position.

cmlobue |

Nothing happens when you touch the final plate with lightning.
And again, I will have to ask exactly how you place the tiles, because this module is 70% "what order?" puzzles.

![]() |

Vincenzo blows gently on the stone, wondering if perhaps Sukit was correct. If so, he just wasted a flask of bottled lightning.

cmlobue |

The final tile begins to glow, as does something in the room where you fought the golems.

![]() |

”From reading that allegory again, maybe it is Fire, water, sky, and then earth. I think we might have the last two tiles in the wrong order,” she says, quietly in concentration over the words.

![]() |

Tess moves the tiles in the following order, Fire, water, sky, then earth and takes a deep breath to see what happens.

cmlobue |

You observe no change when the tiles are placed in that order.

cmlobue |

Fire, water, sky, earth also produces no noticeable result.

![]() |

Air, water, fire stone?
Vincenzo rearranges the tiles now that they are all glowing.

cmlobue |

As Vincenzo places the stones in this order, the indentation briefly glows brighter. Anyone using detect magic can see a thin tendril of magical energy leading to the south, beyond the walls of this room.

![]() |

Vincenzo pokes the window a few times, surprised at the manner of construction.
He then returns to the first room, and attempts to press the buttons one more time.

cmlobue |

When you return to the previous room, the rune and tiles are radiating magic.
Please place yourselves for button pressing, as it will matter.

![]() |

Would someone peace Tess about, say 15’ from the machine? Thanks.

cmlobue |

Nothing has moved, though the room seems less dead in a way that is difficult to articulate. You cannot press a tile without being on the platform or a way to manipulate them from 15 feet away. When you touch one
There is no consequence for failing this check, so you may take 10 or 20 (for now).

![]() |

”Ah, experimentation. Lovely. Well, I’m sure the survivors will learn a great deal.
Vincenzo presses the now-glowing rune, and awaits his fate.
take 10 on int gives him a 15

cmlobue |

Nothing happens when you touch the rune on the floor.

![]() |

Standing in the blue area now, Vincenzo presses the runes for ‘right’ and ‘travel’.

cmlobue |

"Travel" is the rune on the floor.
The quartz tile glows as Vincenzo touches it, and then he vanishes from the room. He finds himself on one of the platforms.
Three triangular black crystal platforms with 3-foot-high crenelations hover in the air suspended 200 feet above the cavern’s floor, at the same elevation as the rest of the complex. Each platform bears an inlaid gold rune, copies of the “travel” rune found in the previous area. Each platform also contains two triangular controls, one situated above the other. Part of the wall and floor of the easternmost lift is cracked and broken.
As Vincenzo arrives, unquiet spirits emerge from the mists, looking as if they wish to destroy the intruders.

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Grr...
We can't leave him out there alone. She says to the group as she moves between Tessara and Kitajo. I am going out there. Come with? She asks them. They can each choose to come or not. Hoping to save them a standard action of activating the rune. After moving she will cast Dimension door to join Vincenzo. Tessara and Kitajo, let me know if are coming too.
Questions: Xen as part of her move wants to move to where she can see one of the spirits and initiate a stare as a swift action. Can that swift action be taken as she moves or only before or after? If only before or after, can she see a spirit either before or after her move? If so she initiates a stare. If not she cannot because after dimension dooring her turn ends. Also not sure if they can indicate while flat footed if they are willing to come. If Kitajo does not want to travel with her Xen could move to include Sukit.

cmlobue |

The only enemy you will have line of sight to from the space between Tessara and Kitajo is Red, and you can stare at it before casting the spell. I think a yes or no answer while flat footed is doable.
There are two different types of creatures, so you can attempt a second Religion check. You can also make an Arcana check to learn something about Green.
Xen dashes across the room, teleporting herself and some of her companions to the sky lift with Vincenzo as some illusory duplicates surround him.
The creature on the far platform floats across the space between them, screaming wordlessly and seemingly unconcerned about trivialities like walls or gravity.
