"I agree with you. Another one fallen after a last stand.", Elanna sighs. "I was hoping we would find some of them still alive. But there hasn't been a sign yet."

"Honestly, the most capable Pathfinders probably would have found their way out of Lastwall by now if they survived the conflict," Elien notes aloud, "Those that fell were still heroes, of course. I don't mean to dishonor them or their capabilities. We're all trained extremely well. Better than most, I'd imagine. But they likely got cornered and just had no way out. Best if we don't let that happen to us. So, let's just get these remains back to our colleagues and those who would mourn them."

"Where now? Do we explore the two small rooms by the stairs? Or should we keep together and do one after another?"
Oiyeron Marduzi wrote:
"I think we should keep together, gods only know what's wandering around in this building still."

"That's sage advice," Elien agrees as he moves among the detritus of the smashed desks, "We saw an entire undead patrol on the way to Goldenflame and then multiple zombies still active there. It's not a stretch to imagine there'd be more here in the college given that we can see several slain ones surrounding Bryrigar here." The investigator stops as he contemplates the mauled body of the gladiator as Oiyeron eases it into the bag, then turns away. "Well, I think we've nearly cleared this wing. Let's search the other and then head upstairs together." He looks after Grimm as the half-orc investigates the closet, willing to wait in case something else is turned up that they should take back with them.

I'll split you up since the closets are small, and bot Kei to be on one of the teams.

Both closets are full of mundane materials: some cleaning supplies, some teaching supplies. Nothing magical, nothing relic-y.

Oiyeron recognizes the tatters to be the remains of ruined handwraps, such as those used by brawlers.

Nubie tries to investigate the body, but doesn't find anything of note.

Kei had been quite silent since they started exploring the keep. Not only he felt he was out of his area of expertise, but the sight of so many corpses had left him shocked. Although it's expected for a Pathfinder to be familiar with death in all its forms, imagining the fight brings pain to him; Tar Baphon's foul magic had made it so the bodies of people who could have been family and friends killed their loved ones.

"Uhh... Ellana, could you scout next room please? I'm afraid there's not much I can do, I might as well end up revealing our location or activate something nasty if I do so myself." Kei looked to the ground awkwardly.

"Well, let's press on..." Elien urges, "I'd prefer we complete our mission and make haste for the border as soon as we can. Having to camp overnight with undead roaming about would be bad." He watches Elanna and Kei leave to check out the west room, calling after them to take Nubie as well, and he'll go with Grimm and Oiyeron to examine the west hall. "Agreed, let's do it that way. Look into the room and search it. Anything dangerous, we retreat and regroup." Elanna nods to Elien suggestion.

Then she turns to Kei and pats him on the back. "I think none of us feel right with all that happened here. I don't like it at all. I mean, it's a lot to take on and nobody can be prepared for that. It's just some of us are better at hiding it by concentrating on the task at hand. Just like Nubie."

She goes to the door of the west room: "Come, I've seen you've got a good eyesight. Let's have a look at this one."

Grimm is good with this plan...

The halforc prepares to advance alongside Elien and Oiyeron into the West Hall. As he is doing so, he realises that there is a real risk of his polearm becoming an encumberance in a close quarter melee, especially if the group is forced to fall back to join with the others. Specifically, he realises this when he accidentally clouts Oiyeron in the chest with the butt end of the weapon, and turning to investigate, precipitates a nimble dodge by Elien as the bladed end sweeps inches from his cheek.

"Apologies Elien, Oiyeron - here, give me a moment: I don't want to do any of us an injury..." Grimm mutters as he slings the polearm laterally across his shoulders.

"Right - much safer." Grimm has retrieved from his pack his backup weapon. "I call this 'Bertha' - far better suited for any indoor action."

Bertha is a six-inch diameter steel spiked ball, on a 10 foot long chain-link leash. Grimm starts spinning it up to speed, holding the chain lengths looped in his left hand. "I've never used this before! Let's go!" He heads towards the narrow doorway alongside the others...

I would understand if Elien or Oiyeron opted to go with the other group instead...

"Smashing." Elien acknowledges with his typical understated humor. "No doubt, the sweeping movement of your 10-foot chain-ball 'Bertha' will be far easier for us to avoid than the sweeping movement of your razor-sharp polearm..." The investigator looks back at Oiyeron with a roll of his eyes, certain the wizard will understand the irony even if their half-orc friend does not. "You may certainly precede us, if you wish, Master Bana..." he adds, "Oiyeron and I are happy to follow in your wake should we encounter any undead still ambling about...but, remember, if we find more zombies, they're far more susceptible to being cut down with blades than bashed with a bludgeon. So, I'll have my sword handy in case I need to step forward as you fall back..."

Oiyeron rubs at his chest where the half-orc's polearm had connected with him. The magical reinforcement he'd cast on his traveling clothes that morning had blunted most of the blow, but it had still winded him a bit.

"Please also be sure not to damage anything that has managed to remain intact up until this point..."

Oiyeron stayed with Elien, a few steps back from Grimm, as they entered the room.

We are entering Encounter Mode. There are no enemies visible (and there may not be!) but things happen fast enough that I need to track everything in 6-second increments rather than 10-minute increments. I will roll for initiative just to make you paranoid, but for now, it's just a tracker. Also, because you're split, I will be spoilering each half's observations. Please spoiler your responses in return.

Elien, Oiyeron, Grimm (Team GEO):
This spacious classroom still contains some relatively intact seating and a dusty old rug. To the north, the floor is sodden, and part of it has collapsed, revealing a hole filled with shattered bookshelves, broken chairs, and other decor. Doors exit to the east.

Perception checks:

Spoiler:

To be honest, this part doesn't need to be in encounter mode - it's the other team. Whatever you do, it'll take 10 minutes. But if something happens in the other room, whoever is Crafting won't be able to leave without pausing progress repairing the floor.

Elanna, Kei, Nubie (Team KEN):
The velvet-lined sofa pushed up against the east wall is caked in dust. Broken chairs rest in the northwest. A small closet and empty office, both with their doors torn off or kicked in, are to the north. Closed wooden doors lead to the westand south.

Perception checks:

Spoiler:

Perception (Nubie-has Darkvision): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Elanna and Kei hear faint, ragged sobs coming from beneath the sofa. There's someone there!

The creature is hidden to Elanna and Kei, and undetected to Nubie. Elanna or Kei will need to spend an action to Point Out the noise. None of your weapons are drawn.

I'm going to enforce the action required to Request, so if you're trying to communicate with the creature, you'll need to spend an action.

Looking more closely at the flooring from a safe distance he halts and raises his left arm in warning, with a chink of shifting chain; "Hold Elien, Oiyeron - that floor does not look safe... "

He peers into the gloomy hole, trying to see down with his darkvision. "Hello? Anyone down there?" He turns to Oiyeron and Elien, raising one eyebrow, questioningly.

In a bold voice he calls out, pitched to be loud enough to be heard in the next room "Come Out! We Would Rescue The Innocent, and Crush The Undead! Come Out!"

Elanna hold up a hand and points to the dusty sofa. "There's someone hiding under the sofa!"

With the other hand, she draws a dagger, turning her body so that she can keep it hidden from the creature.

Elien winces at the volume of the half-orc's voice. "No need to alert the entire floor to our presence," he cautions, "If there are creatures still here, you may draw them out and trap us against this hazard before we can find enough fighting room to take them on..."

The investigator gestures towards Oiyeron. "Any chance you can help me craft something a bit steadier than those soggy boards? Or, even a makeshift ladder might suffice for us to climb down and investigate what's below. There's probably a decent chance of finding something still worth taking back with us. After all, if there were valuable relics here, they could have fallen out of sight and any scavengers who passed thru...including undead...might have missed them."

Elien will enlist Oiyeron's aid in seeing if they can locate enough spare wood...possibly taken from other stronger flooring in the hallway or the neighboring walls themselves...which they can lash together into a temporary ladder to climb down and back out of the hole.

Bringing us out of Encounter Mode.

A pair of eyes peeks out at the cwute widdle weshy.

The Pathfinder realizes they are friends and a half-orc scrambles out from his hiding spot in relief. Although he has been worn down by the months of hiding from the undead, a glimmer of his adventuresome, though nervous, demeanor comes through. He asks the PCs if they have seen any of his teammates: Gibb Potsmasher, Kailli Thimbleberry, and Osprey Pierces the Tide.

Suddenly remembering he forgot to introduce himself, he extends a hand. "Larraz," he says. "Larraz Virtanne."

Larraz was deployed along with a group of fellow Pathfinder recruits from nearby Vellumis on a diplomatic mission into the Lastwall countryside. When the forces of Tar-Baphon emerged and began their assault on Lastwall, Larraz and his party found themselves trapped, with no path of retreat. They began slowly crossing Lastwall, working their way back to Ustalav. About a month ago, the group found their way to Goldenflame, which had already fallen. In a skirmish with undead there, Larraz was separated from the group—including his trusty companion Desert Wind — and in his terror-stricken state, he fled to Goldenflame College. He has been living here ever since, rationing his supplies and sneaking out to replenish them only when absolutely necessary.

You can tell each other what happened, or you can just open the other teams' spoilers.

You can ask Larraz any questions you may have as part of the same 12:30-12:40 time block.

Gleaming at the bottom of the hole among the detritus from the fallen floor is an ornate, ceremonial longsword with a golden, wire-wrapped hilt and a pommel set with large rubies.

DC 15 Religion or Society:
The sword’s normal function is to serve as an important ceremonial item in services held by the church of Iomedae. Although its main use is for ceremonies of cultural or religious significance, but it can be wielded as a nonmagical, battleready longsword.

When comparing notes, Larraz is unaware of anything that the team has missed on the first floor. However, he adds, "There's something you might be interested in upstairs - it's a large stone statue depicting a chariot wheel wreathed in flame. It's too heavy for a single person to lift, but as a team, you could carry it out."

I'm revealing the map of the second floor - see Slide 5 - to simulate him describing the layout. You'll still need to spend time to search the Dormitories, Dean's Quarters, and Study Area (tasks added to the list below), but you'll automatically know the statue is worth taking (it's the most non-obvious relic).

"That's an Iomedaean ceremonial longsword." Oiyeron says, instantly recognizing the ornate sword Elien brings out of the hole with him. "My mother was given a similar blade when she was Knighted. It only came off its wall mount for special occasions, but, being a sword dedicated to the Goddess of Valor, they are all made to be sound, serviceable blades. Showy, but combat-ready." Oiyeron passes a hand over the blade. "They are not usually enchanted..." He nods. "This one follows suit. If anyone might need it while we're out here, I think the Goddess would not mind it cleaving some undead flesh before it gets returned to Her clergy."

Elien is happy to hand off the blade to Oiyeron, nodding as the mage explains its significance. "That's good to know. At a minimum, it looked valuable. I'm glad it has cultural significance and we were able to rescue it." He leaves the makeshift ladder in place in case anyone else has a need for it in the future should someone fall thru the flooring at a later date.

The investigator then notices Larraz. "Hello. Who's this?" Once the others introduce him, Elien shakes the half-orc's hand. "Far better to find a fellow Pathfinder alive and well. We're here to get you out, provided we can avoid any undead between here and the border." As Larraz shares more about the upper floors, Elien just listens. And when he describes the statue, he frowns a bit. "Sounds heavy. We could likely move it, and the cart might hold it, but I'm afraid it could slow us down significantly. I guess it wouldn't hurt to take a look and evaluate it. Then, we can make a decision on whether its worth the effort to carry it down."

"Thank you, Larraz. It is good to have a name - he will be remembered.". He wraps the body of Bryrigar in one of the bags provided, adding under his breath, "If we make it back..."

Once this is done, he requests one of the others to accompany him back to the cart with the body. As he does this he takes a moment to survey the area around the college, watching for movement, listening for sounds from the town of Goldenflame. Are there any signs of activity, living or dead, that cause him concern?

Once the group is ready to advance to the second floor, Grimm suggests they use the staircases rather than the circular stairs, "Hard to fight effectively in tight space on a circular staircase, " he explains. He stows 'Bertha' and draws a pick.

To Elien: "I am sceptical we want to manhandle a stone statue all the way back to Caliphas, horse or no horse. It'll slow us down, for sure. Let's take a look and see." To Larraz, "Which room is the statue in?"

Once upstairs, Grimm takes 10 minutes to examine the Dean's Quarters, hopefully alongside one of the others.

He pays particular attention to the large window looking out over the front of the college, alert for trouble. Or, for example, for any of the bagged corpses in the cart getting up and moving around...

Grimm sees the movement of faint shapes on the horizon, almost like living mountains. The footsteps of these Gargantuan creatures echo across the empty wasteland as the monstrosities thud ever closer.

Grimm estimates that the creatures will be here in 2 hours, although there may be smaller (unseen at this distance) creatures that arrive sooner.

"I will check the Study Area." Oiyeron says. He heads to the room as soon as the party gets upstairs. He plans to take a quick glance inside, then begin a more thourough search with the first thing that stands out.

Standing at the window at the front of the college Grimm's mouth gapes on seeing several shapes he had assumed to be hills on the horizon, moving in their direction!

Even as a rookie Pathfinder inexperienced in such matters, Grimm rapidly concludes that the approach of multiple gargantuan undead creatures definitely fall under the definition of things he ought to share with the rest of the group. "They told me 'Explore, Cooperate, Report'," he mutters under his breath "they never mentioned those!"

Running to the door he calls the others - "Guys - screw the statue. We need to clear the upstairs and scoot, fast. What in the Gravelands," he points out the window, " are those!"

Moving up the stairs with the group, she glances at the window to see the massive shapes on the horizon. "I have no idea what they are, Grimm. But you're right. Let's move fast and leave before they close too much. There will be scouts and patrols ahead. But if we decide to take the statue with us. I've got an idea or two. We can hammer one or two pulleys from my climbing kit just outside one window and lower the statue down without carrying it in the stairs. But that's for later."

Turning on her heels, she rushes after Oiyeron. "Let me join you. We can search this room quicker."

As they search, Oiyeron replies to Elanna's comment on the massive undead. "If it has ever lived, it could conceivably be raised from the dead. I've heard of ancient dragons being raised to undeath." Oiyeron shudders somewhat at the idea. "Anything's possible if you can channel enough power."

Oiyeron calls out loud enough for Grimm to hear as they search. "I don't want those things to catch us, either, Grimm, but the statue in the hallway is sacred to Iomedae. It is a representation Jingh, one of Iomedae's holy emissaries. It is probably his 'golden flame' the College is named for. I would like to find some way to take it. Elanna's idea has merit."

Elien follows along upstairs, and then grows just as alarmed as everyone else when Grimm calls their attention to the approaching threat. As Oiyeron expresses his determination to retrieve the heavy statue, the investigator listens carefully and thinks thru all the possibilities before offering an opinion.

"I have a proposal then," he announces, "I'll join Grimm to put our collective brute strength to the task of assessing the statue and moving it into place so we can use Elanna's pulley system. Kei and Larraz can join us. Maybe we five can then deal with it easily enough. While we're doing that, I suggest Nubie take a quick look in the dormitories to see if there's anything worth salvaging there. Oiyeron can do the same in the study. If there's nothing readily apparent to rescue, double back to us to help ease the statue down to the cart."

"Elanna? Oiyeron? If those massive creatures make better time on us that it seems, we may ultimately need to abandon the statue, climbing kit, and all but the cart to see what we've reclaimed to safety...including Larraz and his horse."

OOC: Elien will join Grimm in going to the Dean's Quarters and use his That's Odd and Trap Finder class feats to determine if there are any opportunities or dangers awaiting them there (such as more weakened floor boards).
