Quick question for the body in the Chapel. we have the initials of the wayfinder that correspond to the name of a goblin arcane caster adept of pyrotechnics on our list and we have a small body with ashes around it.
In game terms, does Elanna need to make the check to definitely identify the body or can we bag it with the risk of a mis-identification but with good converging clues and move to another action?
I will translate that in RP if that is possible.

GM Watery Soup |

You are not required to exhaust every potential clue, and as you point out, it may be smart to leave a few stones unturned and move on at some point. But there may or may not be a penalty for misidentification, and you'll definitely want to find as many relics as you can, so you'll need to balance the pros and cons.

"Well, this liquid is colorless, odorless and... I think it's also tasteless but I'm not gonna try it out. So it's safe to say it's water!"
He turned towards the group in the distance.
"Elien, you might want to come and wash off, water seems fine!"
Kei moves on towards the chapel, he respectfully kneels down before the body in there and tries to identify the body.

Elien joins Kei at the fountain, using the water there to wash his hands as well as the wayfinder he'd managed to free from the horse's mouth. "I believe we've now got our first proof of a Pathfinder here in Goldenflame," he remarks to the druid, "But considering it came from the mouth of an undead horse, I fear that doesn't bode well for whoever it belonged to..." He looks around the plaza and the various buildings with a cautious eye. "So, where'd everyone else get off to? It's probably not safe to wander around alone. There could be more undead skulking about..."
Once Kei points out where their comrades went off exploring, Elien nods and tucks the wayfinder into one of his pockets before taking his leave. "Keep an eye out and give us a warning if you see anything dangerous," he recommends, "I'll go help the others with their search. I've got a knack for uncovering clues, you know..."
Elien will venture to building A2 to check on Elanna first to ensure she hasn't gotten in over her head. And, assuming she hasn't, he'll assist with helping her identify anything left behind.

Oiyeron examines the bodies by the fountain. This zombie shambler was once a human, and that his neck and face both show significant damage from some kind of violent strangulation and tearing from teeth.

Elanna calls to the group after her discoveries in the Chapel:
"Hey, I found this body here and there was a wayfinder with GP initials. The body is small and there are ashes around that would fit with someone using fire. So I think this is Gibb Potsmasher's body. He was also an adept of Sarenrae so if we can confirm that, we should bag his body."
She also looks at the list of Pathfinders: "The other wayfinder we found had initials with CM. That could be the one of Clement Marten. We know he was human from Taldor. From what we've seen, it may be one of the human zombie shamblers ? Elien and Oiyeron, do we have a body that could correspond to a taldane male ?"
FYI, I've added text boxes with the info we have close to the potential identified bodies on the slides.I think we have the bodies of Clement Marten and Gibb Pottsmasher. I've also got a suspiction that the body in the Tavern is not that of a Pathfinder because we don't seem to have a plate wearing one on our list. But I may be wrong.
She turns to Elien: "I've also got some documents here in the chapel. And if I remember well, the captain told us there could be historical records stored here. Elien, do you want to sort them out or shall I do it?"
If Elien want to work on the odcuments, Elanna will go explore another building (A5). If not, she'll tackle the documents.

Already on his way to the chapel with the bag Oiyeron handed him, Elien pulls up short at Elanna's declaration. "Excellent! Top work, my dear! It appears our mission is already off to a good start. Here's a bag we can use to recover Gibb's remains. I doubt we'll find any better confirmation than what you've already deduced..."
"The other wayfinder we found had initials with CM. That could be the one of Clement Marten. We know he was human from Taldor. From what we've seen, it may be one of the human zombie shamblers? Elien and Oiyeron, do we have a body that could correspond to a Taldane male?"
"We do indeed," Elien confirms, "After examining the bodies, I noted one of them is dressed in Taldan attire. His neck and face show significant damage from a bite wound...quite possibly the reason that zombie horse had his wayfinder stuck in its mouth, assuming poor Clement wore it around his neck." Elien looks back at Oiyeron who's continuing to examine the bodies. "Hey, my good man!" he calls out, "Do you think you could bag that one there? The one wearing the Taldan finery? He should be one of our missing Pathfinders that we need to return for burial..."
"I've also got some documents here in the chapel And if I remember well, the captain told us there could be historical records stored here. Elien, do you want to sort them out or shall I do it?"
"Probably best if you do it, though I'll be happy to look over the results of your work a bit later, if you like. In the meantime, I'm going to take a quick look in the rest of the buildings...starting with yours...just to see what else I can ascertain before any clues get disturbed or erased. I'm not implying anyone's doing a bad job striking out to search everything. We need all the eyes we can get if we're going to make fast work of things. I've just got a bit more practical experience with these endeavors, and if I can do a cursory examination of each site, I can probably better direct everyone's efforts to maximize our success..."
"So, other than these records you've discovered...and poor Gibb's body...is there anything else in the chapel that seemed out of the ordinary? Or anything important to the town of Goldenflame that we should take back with us? I suspect you've already found the most important information, in which case, I can follow after Grimm, Nubie, Kei, or look in upon one of the other buildings..."

Grimm sticks his head out of the tavern doorway, across the square. "There's been a last stand in here, too. A knight, by the looks of it. Barricaded in, but undone in the end by numbers." He looks back into the tavern. "Look's like he put up a decent fight. I guess casusing casualties won't win the battle versus a necromancer..." He grimaces in disgust. "Oh hang on..."
He disappears into the tavern, not giving the painted sign of “The Flaming Wheel” a second look. He re-emerges a moment later clutching a mug of beer "Hey, guys, I found an unbreached keg - beers are on the landlord of the Chariot!" He takes a draught then immediately spits it out - "Eurgh - whatever fell magics came through here even turned the beer!" He shakes his weapon at the sky, "Curse you, Whispering Tyrant!"
Grimm will attempt to identify the body in the tavern.
perc: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
After he tries this, he returns to the fountain and join the others. "How long we been here - you think a half hour or so? Maybe we should think about pushing on after another 20 minutes or so." He looks around, watchfully. "In and out, the Captain said. Nice and quick. I'm all for that."

Elanna, I'm going to have you do the documents, as Elien will cover the the buildings quickly with That's Odd.
Among the papers, Elanna find census records and historical documents kept by the Goldenflame town council — fortunately far enough from Gibb’s flames that they remain intact. These records detail the history of the town’s inhabitants and notable events in the town’s history, including festivals, feasts, and the like.
---
Elien moves quickly through the remaining buildings, scanning quickly.
A4 is a guardhouse. This small house was where rotating Knight of Ozem
guards would stay. The bed and table are crusted with a thick layer of dust, although a few tiny scuff marks on the floor suggest things were shoved under the bed that could be found if someone took a full 10 minutes to search.
A5 is an apothecary. Grime-caked and smashed glass cases occupy much of this apothecary, and dusty shelves line many of the walls. A door to the northwest leads to an emptied storage closet. There are a considerable number of leftover reagents here, perhaps someone could find some useful or valuable ones if they spent some time.
A7 is a general store. The town’s inhabitants took most of the store’s wares with them when they fled, and most of the rest has decayed. Elien sees a damp spot in the far corner. He reasons that water plus organic matter plus time equals mold.
Elien Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

With his circuit of the remaining buildings complete, Elien swings by everyone else's location and asks them to reconvene briefly in the town square so he can share what he's found before they continue searching further.
"Hey, everyone! Great progress so far. There's two bodies now identified that we can take back with us, plus the records Elanna found in the chapel should be an important part of preserving the history of Goldenflame and Lastwall..." he explains, "Also, I did a quick check on the other buildings. I'd avoid the general store for now. There's some mold there that looks pretty concerning. Best if we don't expose ourselves to it unless we absolutely have to..."
He then points out the guardhouse and apothecary. "It looks like some Knights of Ozem stayed there as guards, but they're long gone and it's abandoned now. I did see some scuff marks on the floorboards that could mean they stored or hid some items under the beds, though. If someone wants to give that a search, be my guest. Meanwhile, over there is the apothecary. It appears the townsfolk grabbed most of the necessities to take with them when they abandoned Goldenflame, but there are a lot of loose medicinal reagents scattered about that could still be valuable...particularly if any of you need to restock your own supplies."
"Beyond that, what else have the rest of you found? Do you need help with anything? And remember, we're here to not only find any lost Pathfinders, but also to take back anything the town would have viewed as culturally or historically important to them. Hopefully, we can accomplish that and still travel light so we can move everything as swiftly as we can on our return trip."
OOC: Elien is a fair hand at just about any task. So, if Nubie needs help repairing the cart, he's got Crafting +5 and if we want to address the moldy general store, he can attempt to disable the "trap" with his Thievery +5 skill, as well.

"Well, besides my life changing encounter with water, I don't think I have managed to make myself useful, sorry!

I'll go check the apothecary.

"I've got the history records from the town council here. Just where the Captain suggested they were going to be. I've put them in bags. And there's nothing left here."
Elanna exits the chapel and moves towards the center of the place.
"Let's wait for Grimm to tell us what he makes of the last body he found. With Kei going to the apothecary, I can have a look at the general store while you repair the cart or help Nubie with it, Elien. I've dealt with mold many times in the tunnels below High Reach."
She looks into her pack and pulls out a repair kit, bringing it close to Nubie. "I'm not sure it will help a lot but I've got a few tools and nails here."
Elanna is proposing to go to the general store search it and disarm the trap. I can use either Cavern Lore or Survival for that, both at +5.
P.S. You're selling yourself short, Elien, you've got a +6 to your Craft skill, not a +5 :)

"I'm not sure how much time it will take, and how long we want to be here, but I would like to consider doing something about the bodies we aren't returning. I don't know if the chapel has been thuroughly desecrated or not, but putting the bodies there might keep them from being used by the Tyrant's necromancers. We could also put them in a building and then burn it, but that's not exactly subtle."
Oiyeron looks around at the scattered bodies.
"I don't know, maybe I'm being too sentimental because the body I just bagged was dressed like my brother usually was when he wasn't armored up and on duty."

Grimm banner gathers in the square with the others as Elion summarises. "Sure - take a look Olyeron - they're a smallfolk all right, but whether you can identify more from the insignia or not I don't know. The body's inside the door with the odd Flaming Wheel sign, just beyond a barricade."
Grimm approaches Elanna and Kei "Good call on the wagon. Even as a hand cart that's make for a lighter load each on the way back." Grimm kicks the one remaining wheel, "This one seems solid enough."
Bored, he heads to the Guard Post to search under the bed. He's bored, but still mindful of where he is: he carefully drags the bed out of the way, making sure no animated corpse is the source of the scratchings...

He also understands that the armor holds ritual significance, and should be presented to the decendent's descendants, or back to the leadership.

If you're comfortable with the level of identification for the body in the chapel, you may head to Goldenflame College, a 10-minute walk from the town. However, before you leave, there will be some bookkeeping required:
1. I need an explicit inventory of everything you're taking with you. Certain things count as "relics" towards your Primary Objective, and I'll quote Evni as a reminder of what those might be:
Goldenflame College is known for its documentation of the history of both southeastern Lastwall and the activities of the church of Iomedae in the region, as well as its collection of invaluable local curiosities accrued over time. Those relics and stories—if they can be recovered, then Lastwall can live on.
2. The cart can hold 50 Bulk, and and we'll say each body is 5 Bulk regardless of the size (for simplicity). If any PCs are carrying loot on them, e.g., the cold iron buckler, please make sure your Bulk carried is updated. Two PCs will need to volunteer to pull the cart unless you find a horse.
3. When you're ready to leave, and have answered the above questions, open the spoiler below.

Oiyeron will, as respectfully as possible, remove the Knight's armor and put it in one of the bags. He will also check any nearby bags or pouches for possible personal effects. He will then look around a bit to see if there are any small trophies or keepsakes on the walls of the tavern.

Is it safe to assume the bundle of herbs I got counts as L Bulk? Or is it 1? Out of that I'm just carrying my standard gear
"Well, just found this bundle of apothecary items, maybe we can make some tea later on. I have to warn you though, I'm not used to the Inner Sea style of hot beverage, Minkaian tea is usually not sweet at all and... I'm rambling, sorry."
Kei glances at the cart and tries to whistle to show admiration, but just an awkward whimper comes out of his lips instead.
"Not bad Grimm, and Master Nubie. I still have a lot to learn from you. I'd like to help you with moving the cart; I'm not exactly a strong guy but I'd like to help and let you guys rest a bit."
If I can help I'll gladly do, I want to know what the others say, Kei only has 12 STR, but he would like to show himself useful to his companions.

So, by my reckoning the full inventory of items on the cart / in our pockets is as follows (party: please correct any omissions)
Wagon
- Body retrieved from Chapel, presumed to be Gibb Potsmasher;
- Body retrieved from Tavern, Gnome or Halfling Knight of Ozem;
- Body retrieved from Fountain, presumed to be XXX;
- Broken piece of plate armor bearing Knight of Ozem iconography, retrieved from Tavern;
- Census records and historical documents retrieved from Chapel;
- Bag of rolled oats retrieved from store by Elanna;
- low-grade cold iron buckler (Treasure Bundle) retrieved from Guardhouse;
- Golden Wheel sign retrieved from the Tavern;
Pockets/packs
- Wayfinder retrieved from zombie horse by Elien;
- Wayfinder retrieved from Chapel (A2) by Elanna;
- Purse 10 sp (Treasure Bundle) retrieved from Tavern by Grimm;
- valuable scented candles, oils, and dried herbs (Treasure Bundle) retrieved from the apothecary by Kei;
Grimm would stow his armaments and volunteer to haul the cart alongside Kei; whilst doing so he would propose that the party push on to the college rather than invest more time in the town. He will cease searching and stand guard by the wagon until the others are ready to leave.
Once we do leave
"Now that," Grimm exclaims, "is a welcome sight. Here... he rummages amongst the items on the wagon, "Do you think he likes rolled oats?" Grimm offers the oats to Kei "See if you can charm him over here: I have a wagon I'd like to introduce to him..."

OOC: Loot designations look complete to me, including which we're personally carrying versus placing on the cart. I think we should be good to go. Everything seems resolved well enough in town.
Elien stands by the cart, observing Grimm and Kei make plans to coax the newly arrived horse into becoming their beast of burden for pulling the cart. "Quite fortuitous..." he idly remarks to those around him, "A rider-less horse. And this one doesn't appear to be an undead zombie, so it should be infinitely less trouble...assuming our druid friend there can keep him calm, of course." Elien looks beyond the horse and around at the immediate vicinity in case the owner might also be around...deceased or otherwise.
Elien would like to make a Perception check to scout, I guess, in case we missed whoever put a saddle and barding on the mount.

"Kei, can you see if the horse responds to the name "Desert Wind"?"

With Desert Wind pulling the cart (unless I have two volunteeers), the Pathfinders trek to Goldenflame College. Although run down, the building still bears signs of its once-beautiful architecture: dirty and ivy-wrapped columns, majestic archways, and a partially intact stained-glass window portraying Iomedae herself.
Two wide staircases lead into the college, and centered above them is the religious symbol of Iomedae. Engraved into the graying stone is “Goldenflame College, Est. 4083 ar.”
A pair of sweeping staircases lead to a veranda across the entire front of the college, with entrances to a reception area and the main hall on either side.
See Slide 4. Light is normal light throughout the building.
Lying face down on the porch is a body. This small corpse’s hand is outstretched to the door of Goldenflame College. The body is clad in dirtied white-andred robes with gold trim, shredded from the back as though by cruel claws. A small notebook has fallen nearby, its pages
stained with dried blood.

Another one. How many more will we find here ?
"Thanks for looking at that body, Oiyeron. I'm going to start with the first room. Anyone wants to come with me ?"
Letting others deal with the corpse, she stops by the entrance, waits for one of her companion to join her and pushes the door open, stepping in the room cautiously.
Elanna enters the front room

The gothic architecture of the abandoned college; quick soft footsteps on the stairs; eyes darting left and right, nervously scanning the
gaping windows overlooking them. A small body, arms outstretched, contorted on the cold flagstones topping the staircase.
A steel-tipped boot clinks on the top step. A green hand grips a polearm, switching grip to lower the blade through the doorway. One last look down at the corpse, before a muscled neck under a steel pothelm follows the softly-stepping woman into the first room...
Grimm leaves the investinging to others' skillsets. He partners Elanna into the front room, alert for trouble. Exploration action: scout (+1 init to all)

"Hmmm..interesting..." Elien comments as he looks up at the impressive exterior facade of the college, "Pre-Cheliax construction. I believe there are similar buildings in Vellumis...some of which can be observed from the shoreline when passing by on Lake Encarthan. It would seem that Goldenflame College contributed quite a lot to the identify of the town. Keep an eye out for any other items we might be able to take back with us so its history is preserved."
Looking down at the body, Elien then picks up the notebook lying on the stairs and riffs thru its pages to get an idea of who its owner might have been. The creaking floorboards of the steps catches his attention as Grimm and Elanna move past to enter the college. "Careful, you two..." he advises, "The claws that slew this one might still be lurking about..."

With the others busy identifying the body by the stairs, Nubie's curiosity gets the better of him and he decides to go up the stairs and investigate the front room. Like any good kobold Nubie peeks into the room first in case of any dangers.

Oiyeron doesn't detect any magic around. I have it as part of the Perception spoiler, so it will be automatic. He also cannot determine anything about the body.
Elien doesn't find any traps. I also have it noted in the Perception spoiler, so it will be automatic. He understands the notes in the notebook to be esoteric diagrams within to be some sort of field research notes, consistent with a researcher at the college and not a Pathfinder. I'm going to mark off the other two investigations, as they're red herrings and I think your critical success should mean something.
Elanna, Nubie, and Kei enter the front room, a reception hall. A dusty sofa and small chairs are the only furnishings that remain in this modest room. Two small windows to the east look out over the front lawn, and doors exit to the north, west, and south. They spend a few minutes searching, but nobody finds anything.

With only one activity left, I'm bot-moving you into the main hall together.

Perhaps once majestic, this cavernous hall now truly resembles a cave: dark and dank. Dirt and standing water obscure the once-pristine white and gray tile, and stone colonnades stretching to the ceiling are covered in grime and mold. Sweeping staircases to the northwest and southwest lead upward, as does a spiral staircase. Smashed statues and torn paintings line the walls here: the signs of a struggle. Several doors exit to various rooms to the north, south, and east.
One painting that has survived the damage from the battle that took place here. The painting is of a distinguished, handsome halfling woman dressed in pristine white finery.

Oiyeron takes a look at the painting.
"I don't recognize this Halfling woman, but judging from context, she's probably a former dean. Students of the college and any of her relations might appreciate having this painting back."
Oiyeron will pull the painting off the wall, set it by the front door to grab on their way out, then go look into the East Hall.

"I'm afraid I can't help you on that, Oiyeron. It could also be the portrait of someone who has contributed to this building. But I trust your knowledge on the topic and I agree that if we have space, we could bring that back."
Elanna looks at the different doors. "Maybe we should split up to search the different rooms. Should we go by groups of two or three?", she adds to her remaining companions as she sees Grimm and Oiyeron enter the East Hall together. "Anyways, I'm going to look at the East Room. Who wants to join me ?"

Seeing nothing inside the front room from his brief peak Nubie jumps in , rapier drawn. "All clear! They be too scared of Nubie the Terrifying!"

Nubie joins the others as they proceed to the main hall. As before, the young swashbuckler peeks into the blue room in search of danger.

"I concur, Oiyeron," Elien responds to the discussion about the painting, having slipped into the college only after a thorough review of the small notebook in his hand. "Perhaps it was a painting of our deceased friend outside? Or mabye one of their relatives? These notes that were lying next to them are diagrams consistent with the research of many academics. Nothing related to the Society, though. So, we probably don't need to return the body with us to Caliphas. But possibly a student or instructor here at the college. And the painting is likely of someone similar."
As the group starts splitting up to investigate the rest of the ground floor, Elien tags along with Elanna and Nubie for the time being, casting his trained eye around each chamber, attempting to piece together any clues as to what happened here.

Waiting for Kei. I did forget to warn you, but you kind of did it naturally - I suggest not splitting up too much.
Also, I've been forgetting Hero Points! Everyone starts off with one Hero Point, and I should have handed out two more by now - I'm giving one to Elien for the investigation, and one to Grimm "zombie killah" Bana.
These should be tracked on Slide 2.

"Hmmm... I'm not sure if it's a good idea to split up, I have a bad feeling about this place."
Kei nervously eyes every nook and cranny of the room. He doesn't likes abandoned buildings, no matter how safe they might be, for him there's ALWAYS something to fear inside.
"I mean, I'm not scared or anything! I'm just worried about my little guy" -he pats the satchel he's carrying- "He can be a little sensitive."
I'll follow the recommendation of the GM and try to stick with the larger group, but I want to know what everyone thinks

Maybe we could just split in 2 groups of 3, so that would put Kei with Grimm and Oiyeron while Nubie, Elien and Elanna are together.

![]() |

OOC: I'm okay with splitting into 2 groups (but no more than that). But keep in mind that PFS scenarios are designed (and scaled) expecting the whole group to be together for any challenge/hazard/combat. So...tread lightly and have a plan to retreat and rejoin forces if we get in over our heads.
Appreciate the Hero Point!

Both areas end up connecting, so the group inadvertently stayed together for this round.
Dirty rugs, shattered desks, and smashed-in doors are what remains of these small offices. Papers and long-dried inkwells are scattered among the detritus.
In the northeast corner, the Pathfinders discover a body. Heavy claw marks and deep rips mar this corpse, which lies sprawled and partially covered by the broken desk in the northwest corner. The desiccated flesh of zombies litters the floor around it. Scraps of cloth hang tattered around its mangled hands, which even now are locked into fists.
Oiyeron detects magic in the vicinity! This leads to the discovery of a a channel protection amulet behind the collapsed cabinet, and a wayfinder with "B.H." engraved.
Together, these represent 2 Treasure Bundles.

"B.H." Elien pronounces the initials aloud as the new wayfinder is revealed. "It seems we've found the body of Bryrigar Hassen...the half-orc gladiator from Tymon turned Pathfinder agent. Poor man went down swinging, it appears...but zombies are best turned by blades, not fists." He looks around at the team. "We should bag him and take him back...make sure his last stand doesn't go unrecorded."

"I agree with you. Another one fallen after a last stand.", Elanna sighs. "I was hoping we would find some of them still alive. But there hasn't been a sign yet."
She pats her cheeks to try to ward of the dark feelings that creep through her mind and push herself. "Where now? Do shall we explore the two small rooms by the stairs? Or should we keep together and do one after another ?"
I think we can take the risk with those small rooms (dark green and light blue). But I'm fine with staying together.
