Edrakk, in one swift motion, grabs a vial of poison and throws it at the elf in front of him before trying to make his way through the crowd, patching himself up as he does.

Blight bomb, moderate: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 24, Poison: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4) + 2 = 8 + 2d4 persistant poison, 2 poison splash (hopefully this doesn't cause any casualties)
Battle medicine, self, Doctor's Visitation, DC 20: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (1) + 17 = 18 Hero point: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (11) + 17 = 28, 2d8 + 15 ⇒ (8, 3) + 15 = 26 I wouldn't necessarily do battle medicine this early, but I'm guaranteed to fully heal myself and get rid of the bleed, so that seems like a good plan.
◆ Stride, to a total of 10 feet of movement

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Okay, I misunderstood something, and I apologize. There are two metrics being tracked in this combat: casualties, and survivors. Y’all’s action during the ball guaranteed 14 survivors!. So I’m adjusting the initiative card to reflect that. Sorry, this is a complicated combat and that in particular escaped my notice.

Chance heals Edrakk and begins singing, and he finds that his voice carries further in this area! The Opera House, during the original Silver Ravens’ time, was magically enchanted with greater acoustics. What this means is that the area and range of auditory magic (like inspire courage) is doubled.

As Edrakk grabs the blight bomb, Orange lashes out at him! Quick Bomber is two separate manipulate “actions”: one to Interact, the other to Strike (because bomb Strikes also have the manipulate trait). Also AoO triggers against a ranged attack, so…

↻ Orange AoO vs Edrakk: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35
Damage (doubled from crit): 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 Evil Damage (doubled from crit): 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11 plus 1d6 2d6 persistent bleed

Orange slashes at Edrakk before he manages to take out the blight bomb. Edrakk, then disengages, trying to heal himself, but not quite closing his bleeding wounds!

Bleed Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10
DC 15 Flat: 1d20 ⇒ 9

All of the Smileys pull out halberds brace for impact, desperately trying to hold their ground against the panicking crowd!

The two Smileys near Vitalis (#9 and #10) instead act in “self-defense” by attacking Vitalis!

#9 vs Vitalis: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

#9 vs Vitalis; 2nd: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 12 - 5 = 18
Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

#10 vs Vitalis: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

#10 vs Vitalis; 2nd: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (18) + 12 - 5 = 25
Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Yeah, the Smileys are MUCH lower level than y’all.

Event:

Chaos ensues. Perhaps it is from an unfortunate missed swing against Vitalis, perhaps it is from being trampled by the panicking crowd, but whatever the case, people die in the chaos. As long as this encounter keeps going, there will be casualties as a result of the circumstance of the panic.

Wincing in anticipation of the coming pain, Jisara nonetheless retreats backwards through the crowd toward Vitalis. Standing next to him, she sends out a wave of magical terror to run through their elven-seeming attackers.

◆ Stride (↻ Blood vendetta if he hits me)
◆◆ Cast 3rd-level fear (DC 27 Will), targeting Green, Blue, Purple, Yellow, and Orange

Bleed: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Flat check: 1d20 ⇒ 13

Jisara moves away from the elf, who slashes out at her in retaliation!

↻ Blue AoO vs Jisara: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

As Jisara’s blood trickles down, she glares at her attacker with anger!

Blue Fortitude; spell resistance: 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 15 + 1 = 32

She then unleashes an enchantment against all the white-haired elves!

Will Saves:
Orange; spell resistance: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 1 = 11
Yellow; spell resistance: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 1 = 18
Green; spell resistance: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 1 = 28
Blue; spell resistance: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 9 + 1 = 30
Purple; spell resistance: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 9 + 1 = 30

GM Screen:
5d20 ⇒ (8, 15, 8, 17, 14) = 62

When Jisara unleashes her magic, though, she notices something interesting. The elves’ specifically Yellow, Blue, and Purple features seem to fade away, revealing what they truly are: masked bearded devils, using illusions to appear as these elves.

Tangent:
So, I made a house rule where I heavily nerfed bearded devils, because they’re one of the more notoriously-difficult creatures for their level.

Now for the funniest interaction ever: Orange, completely terrified of Jisara, tries to get away from her as expediently as possible. And what better way to do that than to teleport a mile away? Orange ◆◆ casts a 5th-level dimension door to get as far away from Jisara as humanly possible!

Another Tangent:
So 5th-level dimension door has the stipulation that once you use it, you’re temporarily immune to dimension door for 1 hour. That means that Orange can’t use their at-will dimension door to sorta-quickly get back. So…Orange is now out of the combat.

The remaining “elves,” however, are still in the fight. Now that Chance has made his position known, Yellow Strides through the crowd to threaten both Chance and Edrakk, then unleashes a spin of attacks!

◆ Yellow vs Chance; frightened 2: 1d20 + 15 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 15 - 2 = 27
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Evil Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 plus 1d6 persistent bleed

DC 11 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 3

◆ Yellow vs Edrakk; frightened 2, sweep, 2nd: 1d20 + 15 - 2 + 1 - 5 ⇒ (8) + 15 - 2 + 1 - 5 = 17
Damage; forceful: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 1 = 10 Evil Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 5) = 8

Green likewise ◆◆ Strides forward and attacks the flanked Edrakk.

◆ Green vs Edrakk FF; frightened 1: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Evil Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7

Blue Strides toward Jisara and attacks!

◆ Blue vs Jisara: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Blue then lashes out at Jisara with their beard (though from the others’ perspectives, the “elf” is attacking with its hair). ◆ Wriggling Beard; the barbazu makes a beard Strike that completely ignores MAP.

Blue beard vs Jisara: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Vitalis interposes, completely negating the damage to Jisara and striking out against the elf! I’ll make the Strike, because now you deal persistent good damage if you hit. Also, TECHNICALLY the bane rune doesn’t apply because it’s disguised as a non-devil and you’ve yet to see through the disguise.

Vitalis Retributive Strike vs Blue w/lesser cover; inspire courage: 1d20 + 18 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 18 + 1 = 30
Damage; inspire courage: 2d10 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (10, 3) + 6 + 1 = 20

Vitalis Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 Nope, still doesn’t look like a devil.

Bleed Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Not all of that damage went through.
DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 12

4 persistent good damage, which triggers their weakness to good.
DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 19

Purple Strides forward and attacks Vitalis and Jisara!

◆ Purple vs Vitalis: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 Evil Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9 plus 1d6 persistent bleed

◆ Purple vs Jisara; 2nd, sweep: 1d20 + 15 - 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 15 - 5 + 1 = 15
Damage; forceful: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9

Vitalis resisted some of the slashing damage.

Barzillai growls. ”You will not get away so easily!” He moves across the stage until he comes next to one of the Smileys, when he Shoves that Smiley with his mace!

Since it looks like none of you are planning on engaging the lillend and/or big bralani, I’ll resolve their turns now and have Vitalis, Chance, and Edrakk go on the same initiative block.

Screams of terror come from above as the winged elf woman slaughters those on the balcony!

Casualties: 1d6 ⇒ 3

The flying, white-haired elf draws back her bow and unleashes an unearthly volley of arrows into the crowd below! It’s technically a 30-foot cone, but I did the trigonometry, and that comes out to basically be the equivalent of a 20-foot emanation if they point the cone straight down.

GM Screen:
2d20 ⇒ (2, 19) = 21

Vitalis scares Purple critical success and attacks #10, knocking out the Smiley in one strike! He then switches to #9 and damages the Smiley.

Vitalis:
The elves are bralani azatas, celestials from the plane of Elysium, embodying the freedom of fair competition. They are capable of transforming into wind and generating electricity and wind. The female one that’s currently flying is definitely stronger than the others.

However, there are some discrepancies. For one, their attacks certainly carry an unholy essence to it, which is more than a little suspicious for a celestial! Jisara’s claim that these are devils in disguise is becoming more and more plausible. But, again, you’ve yet to see through their disguise.

Chance moves out of the way, and this causes Yellow to lash out at him! Because you didn’t Sneak, it’s aware that you triggered an AoO from it.

↻ Yellow AoO vs Chance; frightened 1: 1d20 + 15 - 1 ⇒ (6) + 15 - 1 = 20

Botting Jisara: Jisara, surrounded on all sides, takes a bit of a gamble. She casts shield verbal only, so doesn’t trigger AoOs, casts electric arc. That WILL trigger AoOs.

@GM: With Fortuitous Shift, Chance is no longer dazzled on a successful Unexpected Shift.

Chance shakes his head to clear it after his sudden teleportation.

The fight has barely started, I can’t be sweating that much yet. So why does my shirt feel so wet?

That’s when the pain from his wounds registers and the gnome realizes that the elf’s scimitar - Did Jisara say these are devils? - had scored a deep, ragged cut across his chest, and the front of his clothes are already soaked in blood.

“You pointy-eared and/or infernal bastard! You stay right there! I’ll deal with you in a minute! Lord-Mayor!” Turning, he glares at Barzillai. Oh, bother, he’s a lot closer than I thought he was.

“Lord-Mayor, some of your guests have clearly had too much to drink, and it’s time to send them home! If you find the task too awkward, allow me to assist!”

The invisible gnome squeezes through the panicked crowd, stopping just a few feet away at the edge of the orchestra pit. I believe that Chance is now at most 30’ from the lillend (10’ to the right and 20’ below).

“Hello up there! I don’t know if you’re some kind of being of pure goodness (and a little mayhem on the side) under the control of some evil … well, of Barzillai Thrune, or a devil in disguise and also under the control of Barzillai Thrune! But you’re killing people…” The bard glances down and sees the bodies that have fallen from the balcony, riddled with arrows. “So very many people! And it’s time to stop! WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM, GO BACK NOW! HEJMENIRI

Chances twirls his hand in the air and snaps his fingers at the “azata.”

EDIT: Sorry, I should clarify: Vitalis's second nat 20 (with a total of 28) is actually a failure, but the nat 20 bumps it up to a success. I did the damage correctly, but forgot to mention that that means that Vitalis would only do the critical specialization once, not twice. So I moved Barzillai 5 feet closer.

Rexus! I hope he’s not dead!

Chance slaps a bandage on one of the worst of his wounds and groans in pain, then straightens up to glare at their host. Voice still enhanced, the bard clutches at his broken ribs and roars defiance at Thrune. “Lord-Mayor, you know better than anyone here: DEVILS LIE! These pathetic ILLUSIONS may fool our eyes, but their infernal corpses show THEY ARE FIENDS! The Hellfire to which your FAKE LILLEND returned PROVES IT! THESE DEVILS IN DISGUISE ARE YOUR DOING, LORD-MAYOR THRUNE! YOU BROUGHT THIS SLAUGHTER ON YOUR OWN PEOPLE!”

I sure hope Jisara’s right about this! That did look like Hellfire, though - or at least some kind of scary fire!

The gnome notices the burns Barzillai suffered from Vitalis’s halberd and breaks into a bloody grin. “AND IF ANYONE NEEDS A REMINDER OF WHO’S IN LEAGUE WITH THE FORCES OF DARKNESS HERE…”

Chance reaches up his sleeve and pulls out a glass vial. For a moment, he admires the way the liquid inside catches the light, then glares back at the High Inquisitor and lobs the vial at his face.

“I GIVE YOU EXHIBIT A, A SPECIMEN FROM THE THRICE-DAMNED HOUSE OF THRUNE!”

Turning his attention back to the vampire in front of him, he takes a step back and draws a pair of orange vials. Jisara:
Chance probably doesn’t realize it, but the fact that the holy water hurt Barzillai does mean something, because holy water can only damage fiends and/or undead.

Edrakk throws two alchemist’s fires at the vampire! First Strike was a crit, the second one missed.

And yes, y’all are still in greater difficult terrain. But I will say that the foyer is just regular difficult terrain.

Sorry, miscommunication on my part. Yes, Barzillai became visible after Striking Chance.

Vitalis attacks Barzillai, and on his second swing, he embeds his halberd straight into the Lord-Mayor’s chest! Barzillai’s vision blurs as he drops his mace and falls unconscious!

Vitalis then redirects his next attacks at the two Smileys near him, dropping #16 in the process.

The flying bralani draws back her bow in preparation to shoot another volley of arrows down at the crowd, but she then sees Barzillai fall to Vitalis. She quickly shifts her angle and fires directly at Vitalis!

Edrakk stumbles away from the vampire, light-headed from the blood loss, and makes his way through the croud to Jisara, trying to at least patch up her wounds, as he's done about as much as he can for himself. Then, hoping to keep it from reaching him again, he throws a tanglefoot bag at the vampire, trying to slow her down. "I'm sorry, I-I'm sorry, I'll... I'll try and help in a second, I just..." He turns back to Jisara. "Vampire... being controlled somehow. Not sure."

Not a very high DC, since it's not made by me, but hopefully it'll at least slow it down for a second.

Also, question about difficult terrain: can I combine distance from multiple stride actions to determine how far I can go? Greater difficult terrain costs an extra 10 feet of movement per square, so if I do one move action I can only move 1 square, but if I do two move actions, can I do 2 squares (1 square per movement) or 3 (50 feet total, so I can use 45 of that to move)? If I can move 3 squares, I'd probably want to move one more down.

Yeah, there’s no good way to handle it mechanically. I allow it because it makes sense, and it never really sits well with me that, RAW, someone has to use 3 Strides to move 50 feet in (regular) difficult terrain. That is one of the things that I believe the GMG calls out as being GM discretion. I’ve moved your token 1 space down.

Edrakk runs away from the vampire, heals Jisara, and throws a tanglefoot bag.

The Smileys on the ground floor all watch as Barzillai falls to the ground, and when they do they IMMEDIATELY abandon the plan and try to save their own skins. The Smileys are all basically out of the combat now.

For a few moments, the gnome's body lies unmoving on the floor, flames licking over his clothes, next to the equally still Lord Mayor. Suddenly his eyes snap open wide and his latest wounds begin to close.

Chance inhales, a ragged, pain-filled gasp, and groans. Thanks, Jisara! He turns his head slightly and lets out a quiet whine before realizing that Barzillai Thrune is, if anything, in worse shape than he is. Thanks, Vitalis!

Although the battle has moved at least a little past him, the terrified crowd still presses all around him trying to escape. Worried about being trampled, he starts to sit up, then sinks back to the floor with pained grunt. Shaking his head, he looks up, hoping to spot one of his friends to let them know he’s alive (albeit barely). Instead, he sees the Big Phony Bralani, flying almost directly overhead, another deadly arrow nocked in her bow.

Putting pressure on what he is reasonably sure is a fractured tibia with one hand, he uses the other to give the Big “Bralani” a dismissive wave. His voice is still amplified, but rasps like sandpaper dragged across stone.

“He looks like a human

Jisara Shield Blocks to reduce the damage by 15. Jisara’s resist energy negates the fire damage on Edrakk and herself. And Vitalis makes a Retributive Strike to protect Edrakk (though, because she’s too far, he can’t actually Strike). No matter what Chance is going unconscious, so better to protect the guy who’s drained 3 and got crit. With the drained, that means that Edrakk has 4 HP.

And now that the Smileys are officially out, I’m going to Delay Edrakk until right before Jisara, just for my own convenience for running this combat.

Casualties: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4

Furious Fusillade; volley:
vs Chance: 1d20 + 20 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 20 - 2 = 36
Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 = 11 Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3 Evil Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

vs Edrakk: 1d20 + 20 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 20 - 2 = 22
Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (6, 7) + 4 = 17 Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2 Evil Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

vs Jisara FF: 1d20 + 20 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 20 - 2 = 37
Damage (doubled from crit): 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (2, 4) + 4 = 10 Fire Damage (doubled from crit): 1d6 ⇒ 4 Deadly (that I only just barely remembered about): 1d10 ⇒ 4 plus 1d10 persistent fire

Oh yeah. Jisara and Edrakk have resistance 10 to fire. Uh…huh. So, that persistent fire I rolled here, I’m just going to say that that d10 was the deadly die that I forgot about and move on. Other than that, I’m not going to note the persistent fire on Jisara/Edrakk because it literally cannot hurt them.

Casualties: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8
Survivors: 1d6 ⇒ 6

And assuming Jisara still does the Recall Knowledge she was talking about…

GM Screen:
1d20 ⇒ 9

Jisara:
Bardic Lore: As Jisara finally takes a moment, she realizes that she recognizes this woman: this is Jilia Bainilus—Barzillai’s predecessor and Kintargo’s Lord-Mayor before the Night of Ashes.

She appears to be a moroi vampire (the “classic” vampire), but is specifically a spawn. That is to say, she was turned by another, more powerful vampire, and is forcibly under that vampire’s control.

Interestingly, though, vampires are not easily destroyed, requiring them to be staked through the heart, decapitated, AND anointed with holy water to truly kill them (or being out in sunlight). As such, ironically, the best way TO help her would be to “kill” her, as she’ll just stay as a “corpse” until she’s placed back in her coffin for an hour.

Edrakk steps back into the foyer, drawing an unused set of reagents to create a mistform elixir and drink it, hoping that the concealment will make him more difficult to hit.
