I’ll resolve the blood vendetta first because it was technically still part of Jisara’s turn.

Devil Will; Spell Resistance: 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 13 + 1 = 23

Chance runs into the room and attempts to heal Vitalis.

Chance Counteract: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22 I’ll tell you right now that that’s a failure, but unlike Jisara YOU actually have a Hero Point and can reroll that if you so wish (and yes, YOU can actually do your own reroll; it’s not all required to be rolled by me).

Ouch!

Vitalis forcefully brushes away the devil's beard with his gauntleted hand. "Get that filth out of my face! I'll give you a shave you won't forget!"

Glaive: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (7, 3) + 4 = 14

Vitalis steps after the devil and slashes at him again. Then he attempts to heal himself with lay on hands.

Edrakk steps over to Vitalis, trying to dodge the devil's glaive and simultaneously trying to avoid stepping on the crystals.

Acrobatics to avoid the caltrops, DC 14: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
If I can step to avoid the second square, I will, but I'm not sure if I can move through the desk.

When he gets to Vitalis, he starts trying to bandage the wounds. "These wounds are pretty bad..." He then pulls out one of his prepared elixirs.

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

For the sake of moving forward (and not getting weird with retconning), I’m going to assume that Chance rerolls that failed counteract check in an attempt to not waste one of his shiny new 3rd-level slots.

Reroll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29 Success, so Vitalis actually does heal 38 HP.

Vitalis moves forward and slices into the devil, then attempts to heal himself.

Vitalis Counteract: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

By the will of the Eternal Rose, he succeeds, and in doing so he closes the diabolic wound upon him. Healing to full HP ends persistent bleed.

For Edrakk, you could actually get to where you are without needing to go through the caltrops by moving through Vitalis’s space. Also, since Vitalis is at full HP, I’m going to replace that Battle Medicine with a Take Cover behind the desk (meaning you get your Hero Point back).

The devil growls in disgust at Vitalis and wordlessly slices at him.

Devil glaive vs Vitalis: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (12) + 17 = 29
Damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 Evil Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 2) = 7 plus 1d6 persistent bleed

He once more hooks Vitalis on his glaive and pulls him closer. ◇ Reposition (yes, he can do this on a non-crit) He then swings again at the paladin for good measure!

Devil glaive vs Vitalis; 2nd: 1d20 + 17 - 5 ⇒ (19) + 17 - 5 = 31
Damage; forceful: 1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 1 = 14 Evil Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9

And once again, the devil juts his chin out as the tendrils of his beard go toward Vitalis. ◆ Wriggling Beard

Devil beard vs Vitalis: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (16) + 17 = 33
Damage (doubled from crit): 1d6 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

As the beard-tendrils poke and prod at Vitalis, he feels some fiendish infection make its way into his body as well.

Vitalis Fort: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Bleed Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3 Remember, bleed is a type of physical damage, so the devil’s resistance applies and reduces this to 0.
DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 18

Vitalis reels from the heinous wounds the devil inflicts upon him. "Well there's no healing out of this one. It's kill or be killed. Die!"

Glaive: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34

Vitalis swings with his glaive, bringing the devil to the edge of consciousness. His righteous might grants him strength as he swings one final time and decapitates the fiend!

Taking care of the bleed damage, because it’s important:
Vitalis Bleed: 1d6 ⇒ 6 Vitalis is now unconscious
DC 20 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 17

Edrakk moves over and shoves the elixir in his hand down Vitalis’s throat. Since it’s alchemical (and not magical) the counteract check isn’t needed. Also, I’m pretty sure Edrakk meant he pulled out a lesser elixir of life; you guys definitely don’t have any moderate ones.

Healing to Vitalis: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2) + 6 = 17

Chance moves over and attempts to Administer First Aid to Vitalis.

Chance Medicine: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 Holy crap! Uh…for the record, the DC was 27. Going to consider that assisted recovery, so it’ll lower the flat DC, as well as give Vitalis a new flat check to end it.

DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Jisara Bleed: 1d6 ⇒ 5
DC 20 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 4

Vitalis Bleed: 1d6 ⇒ 2
DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 10

Edrakk moves over and shoves a lesser elixir of life down Jisara’s throat.

Healing to Jisara: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2) + 6 = 18

Chance just stands around, not wanting to risk the situation as it stands.

Jisara Bleed: 1d6 ⇒ 3
DC 20 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Vitalis Bleed: 1d6 ⇒ 2
DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 17

Edrakk then uses Quick Alchemy to make another lesser elixir of life and feeds it to Jisara, bringing her to full HP and thus ending the bleed damage.

Ever the hero, Vitalis leaps toward the doorway to the east, only to find it very stuck.

Vitalis Athletics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

Map Updated Vitalis bursts open the door, finding a pair of malnourished, human twin brothers, not much older than 16 years old—identical in appearance to the twins the shapeshifters from earlier were pretending to be. Their arms are manacled, but they are otherwise free to move around; the swollen door stuck in its frame, as well as the devil on the other side, being sufficient deterrents to the twins attempting to escape.

Seeing the corpse of the deceased devil, the twins jump to their feet and desperately run out of their prison to join with the PCs.

Healing:
Vitalis and Jisara Refocus while Edrakk attempts to Treat Vitalis’s Wounds.

Edrakk Medicine; DC 15: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Damage to Vitalis: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Vitalis casts lay on hands on himself, then Jisara casts life boost on him, then they both Refocus. This is done a second time, which heals Vitalis back to full HP.

You are free to talk to the now-rescued twins as you’re healing up.

"That could've gone better, but it could've gone a lot worse," Jisara says. "Wish I had thought ahead and prepared something to get all this blood off of me." When the twins appear, for the second time, she points a finger at them and shakes her head.

Chance pokes one of the twins in the side. "You seem real enough, I guess. What did that devil want with you? How did you end up down here? Don't you know better than to sneak into abandoned old buildings, especially when they aren't really abandoned?"

Vitalis is as surprised as the devil when its head separates from its body. "Well, that worked." he says before falling unconscious.

If it becomes relevant, Vitalis has a crowbar for aiding in breaking open stuff.

Fast forward to talking to the two teens.

"So that's what the devil was muttering about. These people likely had something very unpleasant planned for you once you came of age. We haven't encountered a woman with an eye-patch down here yet...Wait...there was an eye-patched woman running a confectioner's shop next to the Tooth and Nail. Luculla I recall Setrona saying. If we don't find her down here, we're going to need to pay her a visit. Could she be one of these changelings?" Maybe the eyepatch covers a mismatched eye?

"Angus. Phenio. Do you have a home to return to? Are you well enough to return on your own or would you prefer an escort? You are free now to leave. Or you can wait here and we'll bring you home after we've cleared all the dangers."

”Well, yeah. Dad’s probably worried sick.”

“Except we don’t know where the heck we are, and we still have these.” He holds up the manacles still wrapped around their wrists. Edrakk probably could remove them with Thievery and perserverence, but y’all will find the manacles’ key really soon, so I’m just going to handwave it. For now, though, I’m assuming that y’all will leave them here to be escorted safely at a later point in time.

GM Screen:
4d20 ⇒ (19, 19, 12, 9) = 59
Luculla Deception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (12) + 16 = 28

As the PCs move back to the pit, they are cautious after Vitalis’s close-call, so all four look around. They find that there are more tiles on the east side that likewise are meant to hinge down. So the dotted rectangles on both sides of the pit are meant to hinge down. Chance, on the other hand, discovers several hidden switches on each side of the pit. These are bypass switches; if one is in the “on” position, then the hinging floor is disabled. The three switches are marked on the map in a not-so-hidden fashion.

To the East

A pair of immense iron doors stands closed here. A short message has been written onto the doors in precise script, along with a symbol of an armored fish—which Vitalis immediately recognizes as the symbol of the Order of the Torrent.

Infernal:
The script on the door reads as follows (in Infernal):

These doors sealed by the Order of the Torrent; all holdings within awaiting arbitration. Lady of Graves, have mercy on the souls of those who perished within, and may the Guildmasters of the Gray Spiders burn for their sins.

Chance, with his regular castings of detect magic, determines that the door is magical, and is most strongly affected by abjuration magic. However, before the PCs have a chance to investigate this further, the sounds of chanting in Infernal from the south gets their attention. The door is clearly not going anywhere, so they move to investigate the chanting.

To the East

The ceiling of this long chamber rises to a height of twenty feet overhead, the shallow vaulting supported by stone pillars. Significant sections of the walls and floors have been inscribed with etchings of tiny letters, while statue- filled alcoves stand guard along the walls. Each of these statues is made of stone and depicts a feminine figure, although the details seem more like they were formed in clay that was allowed to harden rather than carved directly from rock. The westernmost statues depict the woman as a beautiful winged figure, while the easternmost depict her as skeletal, with the middle statues depicting a transition between the two forms. To the east, a stage supports a stone altar presided over by a seventh statue of the same feminine form, her right half skeletal and her left half beautiful. Map Updated

The PCs seem to have arrived in the middle of a ritual of some sort—several changeling cultists gathered around and chanting, with nets in one hand and bolas in the other. Standing on the platform, flanked by two cultists, is a woman in a dress with a sickle in one hand and a holy symbol in the other, and a fiendish green mask upon her face that fails to hide her mismatched eyes. Draped upon the altar in front of the masked woman is a sight relatively familiar to the PCs after their extended stay at the Tooth and Nail: Luculla Gens, proprietress of the confectionery shop, the Sweet Tooth, that shares a building with the Tooth and Nail. Luculla stares blankly up at the ceiling, seemingly unaffected by the masked woman bringing the sickle dangerously close to Luculla’s throat.

As the PCs come into view, the masked woman immediately ceases her chanting and points to the PCs as she hisses ”Death to the nonbelievers!”

At this point, the PCs notice that the cultists (not the masked woman) seemed to have been flailing around a bit; almost like they were improvising their weird chanting.

Vitalis speaks Infernal, so he reads the inscription aloud to the others.

"These doors sealed by the Order of the Torrent; all holdings within awaiting arbitration. Lady of Graves, have mercy on the souls of those who perished within, and may the Guildmasters of the Gray Spiders burn for their sins."

"It sounds like they buried the Gray Spiders alive within. We may find some angry undead once we get this open."

In the next room, from what the twins were saying, he is surprised to see Luculla on the altar rather than leading the ceremony, but that mystery can be addressed after the active threats are dealt with.

He shakes off the pounding sonic blast ringing in his skull and steps into the room. He levels his glaive towards the masked figure and shouts, "Reveal yourself, witch! You will find no mercy through lies!"

Jisara is so fascinated by the chamber's environs and by just who is on the altar, she scarcely notices the sonic attack. Vitalis's armored bulk lunging forward into melee startles her into motion, however, and she follows him further into the chamber.

Yellow Trip vs Vitalis; ranged: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 6 - 2 = 14

Seeing Yellow miss, Purple likewise chucks her bola at Vitalis.

Purple Trip vs Vitalis; ranged: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 6 - 2 = 22 Finally!

After ages of failed attempts, one of the cultists finally manages to get her bola to wrap around Vitalis’s legs and send him tumbling to the ground! The paladin then swings at Orange, bringing the cultist to the verge of her life. The penalty from being prone knocks it away from being a crit.

Jisara sends a terrifying enchantment at all the remaining cultists!

Chance takes a step forward, glaring at the masked cult leader and the minions flanking her. "I said, leave the pastry chef alone! What's wrong with you people? Nothing good ever comes from sacrificing people to fiendish powers from beyond the veil!"

With a flick of his fingers and a cry of "Flugantaj rokoj por ĵokeoj!", one of the bolas that the cultists had flung around the room rises from the floor and flies at the head of the masked woman.

As much as I don't want to use this and show my hand, the trigger is when she's targeted by an attack. Chance flings a bola at the masked woman, who shouts ”Assist me my faithful acolyte!” Purple immediately interposes and shoves the masked woman away, prepared to take the hit, and surprised when it misses. ↻ Protect the Master!: the masked woman and Purple swap spaces, and Purple becomes the new target of Chance’s attack (for clarity, this is the masked woman’s reaction, not Purple’s).

Edrakk slices into Blue and pulls out poison.

Orange immediately books it out of the room, pulling the hidden switch next to the pit trap without even thinking of looking at whether the other two switches are pulled. If even one is “on”, then the trap is disabled; now there are two switches that are “on.”

Yellow likewise books it off of the platform and out of the room, staying as far away from Jisara as possible.

Purple pulls out a bola and Readies an action.

Edrakk gets up onto the platform and slices into the masked woman. Technically you do get to know how much damage is done before Shield Blocking, so I’ll say she doesn’t Shield Block that measly 3 damage. Still enough to activate the poison, though.

Chance then uses his scroll to send missiles at the woman, but using her magical force shield she deflects most of them! ↻ Shield Block (from the shield spell: “Unlike a normal Shield Block, you can use the spell's reaction against the magic missile spell.”) Also, Chance, could you specify what scroll you're pulling out AS you're pulling it out?

The woman sees herself surrounded and decides to move off of the platform. Gonna say jumping off of the platform (rather than taking the stairs) is regular difficult terrain (probably contradicting something I did with one of the cultists, but it didn’t change much in the grand scheme of things). As she moves past Jisara, however, she snaps her fingers and suddenly dark glowing energy surrounds the hand clutching her holy symbol, which immediately begins to have its flesh melt away! Will do! Also, sorry for the delay - I thought I posted this on Thursday night.

If the masked woman is still standing:

Chance sings a song to taunt the fleeing cult leader and inspire his allies.

“Where are you running?
Let’s get that mask off of your head
Where are you running?
Your evil minions now are dead
Where are you running?
Ooh, wee, ooh, wee, ooh
Where are you running now?
Fiend-style, defiled
Your Night Queen won’t protect you
Keep your hands in sight and put ‘em in the air
Time to stop this party
Your chance to live is narrow
Don’t count on making it home
Where are you running?
Let’s get that mask off of your head
Where are you running?
Your evil minions now are dead
Where are you running?
Ooh, wee, ooh, wee, ooh
Where are you running now?
Where you running, girl?
I saw you up there
You were up on that stage
Getting ready to kill the woman who makes those little cakes!”

He takes a bow, and tries to slow her down by casting roaring applause.

Vitalis advances forward and swings at the masked woman!

Jisara flings a bola at the masked woman and literally leaps through time to cut off her escape.

Chance sings with fabulous flair in an attempt to get the masked woman to engage.

Masked Woman Will: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22

She just glances at Chance in confusion and slowly claps her hands, unsure exactly what the gnome expects from her.

Botting Edrakk: Edrakk pulls out a dose of leadenleg and applies it to his gale blade.

The masked woman, genuinely confused as to why she’s still clapping, chants and moves her hands between claps, finally raising her holy symbol high as a wave of negative energy issues forth from her! ◆◆◆ Cast a Spell

Basic Fort:
Negative Damage: 3d8 ⇒ (4, 4, 8) = 16
Chance; Unexpected Shift: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 10 + 2 = 25 Success (only because of Unexpected Shift)
Jisara: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 Success
Vitalis: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 Crit Fail

As the woman’s spell reaches completion, Vitalis swings his glaive at her in a desperate attempt to keep the negative energy from going toward Jisara! ↻ Retributive Strike (I’ll actually resolve it myself, because it’ll matter) Chance, meanwhile, vanishes in a bright flash of light that allows him to avoid the worst of the energy wave. ↻ Unexpected Shift

Vitalis Retributive Strike vs Masked Woman; inspire courage: 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 14 + 1 = 29
Damage; inspire courage: 2d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4, 8) + 4 + 1 = 17

With a single valiant slice, Vitalis knocks the woman from her feet, sending her falling to the ground!

Healing:
Vitalis heals another 12 HP from the remaining fast healing. He casts lay on hands on himself to heal 18. Vitalis and Jisara Refocus while Chance and Edrakk Treat each other’s Wounds.

Chance Medicine; DC 15: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Healing to Edrakk: 2d8 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 Exactly the amount Chance needed to heal.

Edrakk Medicine; DC 15: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
Healing to Chance: 2d8 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7

Jisara casts life boost on Vitalis, and Vitalis casts lay on hands on Jisara. Chance, Jisara, and Vitalis all then Refocus.

To top people off, Vitalis casts lay on hands on Edrakk, and Jisara casts life boost on Vitalis (to heal him 1 HP). Jisara and Vitalis then Refocus.

The cultists had nothing on their persons of any particular value, save for the masked woman’s +1 sickle Inventory Updated

GM Screen:

Chance:
As you’re searching through the cultists for something of value, you notice something interesting about the masked cultist: her clothing seems a bit baggy.

Jisara:
As you’re searching through the cultists for something of value, you notice something interesting about the masked cultist: Both the mask she was wearing and the clothing on her body are too big for her.

This happens at some point after the fight, not necessarily after all the healing and stuff occurs: ”Urgh…” Luculla Gens picks herself up from the floor as she rubs her head. It is at this moment that you realize that this is the first time you’ve seen the woman without either an eyepatch nor oven mitts, and you now know why. As she rubs her head, you find that her hands end in long claws. She then regains her senses slightly and realizes the PCs are in the same room as her. She stares at them with one eye that is a calm hazel, and another eye that is a deep green. Realizing how this looks, she flusteredly shoves her clawed hands under her armpits and turns her head to the side in a futile attempt to hide her green eye. Hero Point to Vitalis for 100% calling it that she’s a changeling

"What the blazes..." Jisara mutters, examining the masked woman. "I hardly expect a bunch of cultists to have excellent tailoring, but her robes and even the mask are too big for her by half. Damned if I know what this means, though."

Jisara looks down at the woman, arms crossed.

"So, what's your story?"

Chance casts object reading on the cult leader’s mask to learn “a piece of information about an emotional event that occurred involving the object within the past week, determined by the GM.” If there isn’t one, he will cast the same spell, with some trepidation, on the cult leader’s sickle.

Searching the bodies:

Chance pauses his search of the corpse of the masked woman and sits back on his haunches, rubbing the back of his neck in confusion. “Huh. That’s strange. Her clothes are a little baggy. Not that I expect your average leader of an underground-dwelling, fiend-worshipping cult to pay too much attention to fashion, but... could she have been fasting for some reason?” His eyes slide towards Luculla, hunched over and still uncomfortably close to where, until a few minutes earlier, she had been laid out for sacrifice. “Ummm, some completely unfathomable reason? Or what about when she tried to cast that spell on you, Jisara, and her hand turned skeletal for a moment before going back to normal? Maybe she’s really a skeleton and her corpse is some kind of lingering illusion?”

Chance closes his eyes, puts his fingers to his temples, and chants, “I choose not to believe! I choose not to believe! I choose not to believe!” Keeping his eyes closed, he reaches out a hand and pats the late cult leader’s shoulder, feeling for bone through the (perhaps) illusory flesh, then opens his eyes.

If that doesn’t work, perhaps Bardic Knowledge would give Chance some idea whether cultists of Mahathallah tend to lose weight faster than they can tailor their clothes? He’ll cast loremaster’s etude just in case.

Luculla:

The gnome looks around for Luculla’s eyepatch and oven mitts. If he finds them, he brings them to her; if not, he approaches her anyway.

“So, what brings a talented confectioner like you to a nasty place like this? I’ll bet it makes a fascinating story. But it can certainly wait until we’re back above ground if you’d rather.”

I'll cast discern secrets on myself (to identify the spell she cast on me) and Chance (when he uses loremaster's etude).

Chance steels himself for the worst, and he finds something upon the mask that he did not expect: pride. Pride in being able to even touch this mask, let alone wear it. The masked woman was honored and proud to wear this mask, as it had only come into her possession recently. I will remind you that you CAN cast more object readings to get more information about this prideful event.

Bardic Lore: Mahathallans probably do fast, but this kind of weight change would require something more akin to starving oneself. You’re not sure if that’s a common thing in this religion, though.

Jisara:
The spell the masked woman cast on you was touch of undeath. The hand-turning-skeletal thing was mostly flavor.

Chance doesn’t notice anything particularly illusory from the corpse of the formerly-masked woman.

Luculla looks askance, her eyes filled with sorrow. ”No point in h-hiding it, I guess. K-Kintargo has…a tiny changeling population. Most of us gathered here. We spent time here in contemplation, the usual stuff with the church. But things started going too far—kidnappings and sacrifices?! I…it’s horrible! But…the clergy here are…were the only family I ever knew. Not all of us are that…homicidal! But…Caterina was crazy! When I realized she made a deal with a devil, I…tried to run away, but…” She stares at the altar. ”Caterina didn’t like that…”

"I don't sense any lies. But you do admit to drugging the teenagers. This case is too complex for me to judge on my own. I'm going to bring them in to weigh in on the situation. And of course I'll listen if my allies have an opinion."

Vitalis will attempt to shackle Luculla's hands with his poor manacles. And if that is successful, he'll go to fetch the twins.

If the twins come.:
Vitalis will point to Luculla and ask them, "Is this the one that drugged and kidnapped you? Did she do anything else to you?" And he'll point to the masked woman on the ground. "And is this the masked woman you mentioned?"
