Male Human Bard [Archeologist]/1

Hi!

Male Oread Paladin [Divine Defender]/1

Also Hi

Greetings

Hello there

1 person marked this as a favorite.

After six long weeks, this morning the crew of the Peregrine sighted land to the west. A few hours later, the Peregrine sails into a natural bay with a sandy beach within rowing distance for the ship’s boats. As the crew begins to untie one of the smaller boats to lower it into the water, the sailors pass a spyglass among themselves and finally hand it back to the captain. Captain Jacob Markosi peers at the island for a moment before grunting and handing the spyglass to expedition leader Ramona Avandth. "You should see this," he says quietly. Ramona accepts the spyglass and peers toward the shore. When she lowers the scope, she is clearly distressed but trying to hide her worry. She approaches and motions toward the far side of the deck, away from where most of the other colonists have congregated. "Can I have a word with you?" she asks.

Is there a problem?

Lanzelett asks, reaching to take the spy glass.

Already bored with the discussion, young Ulionestra or Ness to her family - unless she's in trouble, that is - wanders towards the sailors trying to eavesdrop.

Noob question: does she make a check of some kind to eavesdrop? How do I ask to do that? Also, I'd like her to use ghost sound to make a loud distracting seagull noise as she sidles up

"Very much so," she says glumly “Something is wrong. Nobody’s in sight. There’s no smoke from cook fires or the smithy. Some of the buildings look burned out.” As you peer through the spyglass, you can confirm that for yourselves. “Sailors can’t keep their mouths shut. Soon all the other colonists are going to hear about this—if they can’t see for themselves already—and things could become… tense.” She runs her hand through her hair before continuing. "We need someone to row out to shore to check that out, and you four seem to be my best bet for that. There's a secondary landing site that we'll wait for you at. Once you've checked out the town, meet with us there, just along the shore of the island. We'll plan our next step from there, okay?
Oh you don't need to use the quote function for speech, bolding text is generally your best bet, the quote is more for referencing something someone else said.

Hey son, I need a little guidance here. I realized after I posted that. Maybe I should have been replying to this post rather than posting new each time. Also, like I said, I'm not sure about the etiquette around my characters doing things. Do I ask you and you roll, or do I just roll?

To your eavesdrop question, you could make a perception check to try and overhear them, and the ghost sound could be in character, just saying casting ghost sound to imitate a seagull, if something isn't possible, I'll let you know.

Perception DC 15:
The sailors mutter amongst themselves, mostly guessing at what could be the cause of the strangeness, though a few complain that they were told this job would be safe and simple, a jaunt across the ocean and back, nothing more.

Ah jeez the forum refreshing is odd. 1)Yes just make a new post. 2)Either ask me and roll, or if it's a request you know you should be able to do, just say and roll, if its not a thing you can do, I'll let you know. Also sorry for the weird replying, the forums refresh weirdly.

Cool. From here on if I have a general question I'll post as the.heart.to.help like I am now, and otherwise I'll make it character specific.

For instance I can't find anyway to have the forum notify me by email that there's a new post. That's a pretty standard feature, but I just haven't found it.

Male Human Bard [Archeologist]/1

Indi, first darting a look at his wife, nods. That sounds fine, captain. I'm eager to get to shore...

Male Oread Paladin [Divine Defender]/1

Thackett interupts: I think we should know more before we rush down. What kind of town is this? Do you or your officers know any of the city officials? Who should we speak with?

This is a new colony, we're just the second wave to get it self-sufficient after the basic infrastructure was set up six months ago. If anyone is still there, Rayland Arkley was the expedition leader, but it seems all but abandoned, so I'd keep a wary eye. The goal for this settlement is for Andoren to eventually have a real presence on the Shattered Continent. This is our first real foothold here, so little to no infrastructure. We just need to keep the colonists safe.

You have our word that we’ll do all we can.

Male Oread Paladin [Divine Defender]/1

The Paladin grunts and makes a sense motive check on the captain.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

She honestly seems to be in earnest about the state of the colony, the reason she wants you to investigate, and who might be there.

Male Human Bard [Archeologist]/1

Don’t mind Thackett, he’s over protective. We’d be glad to help sort this out.

Male Oread Paladin [Divine Defender]/1

As they climb down into the launch, Thackett casts a protective eye over his adopted niece.

I know that the characters got to choose which spells they prepared for the first day of the adventure. At the same time, Thackett would have chosen Ulionestra as the subject of his divine troth.

Coolio, I kinda figured.

The bay’s waters are calm, with only a gentle rocking of the
ship’s boat. The shore is approximately three hundred feet to
the east, where a lonely dock is built off a sandy beach. The eerie silence keeps you on edge and for half a second you think you see something move once you're around two hundred feet from the boat.

Make a perception check if you could.

Ever watchful, Lanzelett’s keen elven senses search the water.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

Does pathfinder have a passive perception mechanic? Also, does Ulionestra have her familiar already or does she need to summon it or find it or something?

It does not, and yes she already has her familiar

Thanks. I’m thinking about printing character sheets to make this easier on myself. Does the spreadsheet export to a PDF or do I just transfer by hand?

Lanzelett manages to spot the shadowy figures just moments before they attack. Two monstrous figures rise from the waters, teeth bared and spears waving. Half shark, half goblin, with the lower half of an octopus, the bizarre creatures rise from the waters screaming bloody murder. Roll initiative.

This combat has a few special rules. PCs who remain seated in the boat take a –2 penalty on attack rolls. A character can negate this penalty by standing up and attacking, but anyone standing in the boat must attempt a DC 10 Acrobatics check each round in which they attack. Success means they remain standing until they attack again (or another effect threatens their balance). A PC who fails must attempt a DC 10 Reflex save. If successful, the PC immediately sits back down as a free action (standing back up is a move action, as normal), but a PC who fails this save falls overboard into an adjacent square. PCs fighting in the water follow the normal rules for aquatic combat.

Oh I don't think it has an export to PDF function, I realize that spreadsheets would be hard to read on your phone

Np, I’ll print it up and copy by hand. Gramps has a printer.

Lanzellet
Indi

GM Screen:

Thackett is up first

Male Oread Paladin [Divine Defender]/1

Okay, how do I have characters switch spots in the boat? I’d like Thackett and Lanzelett to switch places, then he attacks with his pick.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 221d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

There kinda isn't a way to do that, but I'll move you to beside the enemy. Also remember you need to make an acrobatics check since you stood up.

Male Oread Paladin [Divine Defender]/1

Reflex: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17

Keeping steady, Thackery brings his pick down upon the mister, sending it falling, dead, into the water. A cheer rises from the sailors and colonists who have gathered at the commotion.Ulionestra's up next. Also saying what you're doing on your turn doesn't need to be ooc.

*monster, sorry

Equally fascinated by the creatures as she is frightened, Ness uses a move action to make a perception check trying to learn about the creature. Then, suddenly remembering herself, she fires a jolt spell at the remaining enemy.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Jolt: 1d20 ⇒ 111d3 ⇒ 3

I couldn't find rules on examining creatures.

So, you need to roll a Knowledge check to identify things, in this case dungeoneering. With your roll, you would get enough to identify this creature. Ulionestra remembers her readings and identifies the creature as a Grindylow, an octopus-goblin hybrid. They, however, do not actually share any blood with goblins, though they are just as, if not more, ravenous and sadistic. They eat whatever they can kill, and try to eat whatever they can't. Distracted by the fascinating creatures, the spell flies over the trashing creature's head. Enraged, it lashes out with its tentacles, tripping Indi, before biting at him and prodding him with its spear.Indi needs to make a reflex save and takes 3 damage.

GM Screen:
Tentacles: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14Bite: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (20) - 2 = 181d3 ⇒ 3

And Lanzellet is up next, then Indi

Does Indi make the roll now or on his turn? Also should you be making those kind of rolls in your posts?

A) Now yeah
B) If you're okay with me doing that, I guess I don't know why I didn't
