Hroethgar |
Hroethgar lifts his head and sniffs the air, testing it for scents of magic or mayhem. Nothing! Always nothing!I get frustrated over the smallest things and then I can't find a way to release this aggression. Seems like the dice are against me this night. He lowers his head and begins to mutter under his breath in a strange language.
Hroethgar |
Reaching inside his clothing and pouches, he withdraws several vials and flasks of things and lies them at his feet in a careful manner.
I think this is the right recipe for that...and a pinch of sulfur, a taste of thyme, a dabble of dill..shake and Bista vo his massive head lifts in pleasure as he downs the concoction.

You are on the Kings Road today, riding with the watch in the Noble's District of Ptolus. However there is a commotion in the Sadar Estate. A lot of weeping and wailing. You can hear it where you are. The members of the City Watch want to investigate the wailing.
It's a bright day. The sun's out and you just had breakfast. Filled, there is a foreboding feeling. The family asks the watch and you to come in and see what has happened. It seems that one of the family is dead, and it's Lord Renn Sadar himself.

[dice=K. local] d20+8: What do I know about this specific families reputation in the city?
Upon entering the house, I look around and sniff the air. hmm no smell I can tell.
You know that they have a reputation with Shadow Magic, and often shun the light. You also know that they have produced a long line of mages and are part of the Inverted Pyramid. You do know that Renn has wielded the Shadowstaff. You also know that Renn Sadar has a reputation of having affairs.
Angeus |
Angeus strides into the manor, and dramatically exlaims, "A murder most foul? We shall investigate! " though she really has no idea how to investigate a murder.
She walks around, trying to remember anything Maxim might have told her about this family....
Knowledge(local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
....but somehow he managed to get her assigned to this detail!
If she sees a member of the family or their staff, she bluntly asks, "So, what happened?"

The bloody bed cloth looks like he was stabbed three times in the chest. There is blood everywhere. Although you could say that one of the wounds was in the heart. He died instantly to your perception. They look like it was done with the same weapon. Which weapon you aren't sure of.

Running a little behind the rest, Liz quietly enters the home and turns to look at the door to see if the lock was forced.

Snorting softly, I pace the room counting my steps...1..2..3... not much space here for a fight. Kneeling I look at the wounds closer considering the angles of entrance. two at almost 90 degrees and one at an upward angle. Odd. Its as if the first stab failed. Leading me to believe that Sadar may have know the perpetrator.
The room is well decorated but not to the excess as many of the richer folk prefer, not pretentious but well accoutered. I wonder... I stand and look at the floor..(is there blood on the floor and is it carpeted so to speak of stone, etc. and is there another entrance to the room than the door we entered.) ...what the purpose to such a killing would be..
Elbaren |
Elbarengoes into professional mode as he enters the estate. He'd never been directly involved in a murder investigation like this in his time in the Watch, except as a messenger boy, but he could recall the way the senior Watch members had gone about such things.
Elbaren introduces himself to the servant in a friendly, polite manner. He then starts to gather details. "Maybe you can help us get a picture of how this happened. Who found the lord's body? And when? Also, a list of people known to be on the estate last night would be very helpful."
Sense Motive roll on the servant's response, if needed.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Angeus |
Angeus looks down at the body...."Well, I am pretty sure those," pointing at the wounds with a card she'd found between two fingers, "were made with a dagger."
She then gets to thinking, tapping the card against her chin, then her eyes widen and she presents the card to the others, "Look what I found...a Vai calling card. I think they might be the culprit!"
Hroethgar |
Someone wanted him dead enough to hire a vai or atleast someone clever enough to make it look like via did this. But good gather nonetheless Angeus.
I go back to pacing this time from north to south, counting my steps once again 1..2..3..Wonder why someone would go to the trouble of making a vai kill him or send us on the vai trail? What was reason for it?
K. Local on vai: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 What can I garner about the vai other than they are assassins for hire?I need to listen and think. Lets calm while I do a simple exercise should do.
Walking from the general area, I pull several vials out one at a time and fill them with chemicals and ingredients from my pouches. The substance begins to boil then goes inert. It becomes the ingredient for the next and so forth. There that works simple experiential mixing always calms my nerves.
hearing perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 creva to much talking I can't sort much out. I'll just wait I guess though I hate waiting.
Angeus |
Angeus was half-way to the door, intent on finding these Vai assassins and asking them some pointed questions, when Hroethgar's observation penetrates her intent.
Skidding to a halt, she screws up her face, "Huh, hadn't thought of that..." she says absent-mindedly as she hands the card to Lizette.

It doesn't fit their profile. Thats whats wrong here. The Vai are to efficient for this type of slop. I say standing up and walking back over. What other things do we have to help out? Elbaren, what did the servant report? Creva, I wish i'd prepared the stupid detect spells today but I do hate divination.

There is blood on the floor, leaking from the sheets. The floor is made of stone, but there is animal furs on the stone floor. Renn's chambers can only be entered from the door you came in.

"Well now, what do we have here?"
Lizette moves some curtains to one side to reveal a hidden door. She opens the door and looks down the opening.
"Looks like a servant's walk. Who would have been the last to use it? Where does it lead to?"
She waits for the staff to say something.
A maid says, "That leads to the servants' quarters."

You can't determine how fresh the scene is. From what you can guess, it's about 6 hours old.

They lead to the street, which in the nobles' quarter is nicely cobblestoned.

Reentering the room of death, I flare my nostrils at the scent and scene. The hallway leads to servants quarters like she said. That way is also concealed. Most likely to allow the servants to do their job unseen. Or to smuggle in mistress's. Rumors have it dead man's had a few.

The servants didn't respond to me at all. I mustn't be classy enough for them.
Before following the others out in the direction of the footprints, Elbaren prays softly to Jode, holding his holy symbol, and peers around the room.
Using detect magic. Anything to see?

You see a necklace of sorts shine blue, with a little triangle shining purple on the necklace. It's normally invisible, but not to you, not with this spell. It must be Lord Sadar's inverted pyramid necklace. And it's around a dummy in the room.

As Hroethgar draws the maid's attention, Elbaren moves towards the dummy, curious. He reaches up to take the necklace off the mannequin.
