Destiny of Sands |Guardian|Table 2 | On the Trail of History

On their initial attempts to climb the cliff face, none of the Pathfinders are able to get a good hold or make progress. Indeed, the goblin slips almost immediately and falls prone.
No falling or damage as everyone began the action on level ground.

I should have noted that the cliff face is 25 feet tall and most PCs, even with longstrider spell will move only 5 feet with a success.

Persevering, Isfan makes another attempt and nimbly scales an area of 10 feet up the cliffside. Rising to his feet, the goblin soon scales 5 feet.

As there is a potential for falling and taking damage, PCs must continue making checks (or devise another way to make it to the top). With the exception of Dr. Lazarus, each PC makes 5 feet progress with a success or 10 feet with a crit success. Dr. Lazarus moves 10 feet with a success and 15 with a crit success. A crit failure results in a fall and potential damage.

The first PC to the top may make a Perception check.

Dr. Lazarus will wait for Isfan, or maybe Lizzo, to scurry up ahead and secure a rope. With the help of a rope, he'll continue to make the climb.

With the adeptness of a skilled herdsman, Isfan readily puts the herd of goats at ease.

With the goats calmed, you are able to get a good look at your surroundings from the cliff.

Successes at the following checks earn the PCs 1 Discovery Point per check.

• Learn how to handle the goats, turning a hazard into a resource. This is a Nature check.

• Chart the view with a Cartography or Scribing Lore check, or a Crafting check.

• Recognize valuable terrain resources such as climbing spots and streams with a Nature or Mountain or Scouting Lore check.

• Identify grazing areas and places medicinal plants and mosses might grow. This is Nature check or an Herbalism Lore check.

• Spot a potential meltwater hazard that’s obvious when seen from the high vantage point. This is either a Perception or Nature check, or a Mountain or Scouting Lore check.

• Identify the cliff overhang as a good resting spot or travelers. This is a Survival or a Perception check.

The hardy bushes growing at the bottom of the cliff cushion the fall of the halfling from the cliff face.

This reduces the fall distance by 10 feet. Thus, the fall counts as 5 feet. No damage, but Peregrine starts at the bottom of the cliff, prone.

Dr. Lazarus nods to Isfan. "Yes, it's worth a try to pull them up."
Can we try to pull them up with Athletics checks?

After we get the party up, Lazarus takes some time to study the area. He will Pursue a Lead with the subject being the cliffside. This typically provides a +1 circumstance bonus to Perception and Int/Wis/Cha based skill checks.

As he's wandering the area, Lazarus notices the goats don't attack. He smiles to Isfan, "See? I told you they were friendly."

As party members at the top could convey information to those below, I'd conclude that most of the skill checks could be attempted regardless of a PC's physical location. However, as those atop the cliff made all the checks, it is not necessary. 1 Discovery point for each completed task.

Having identified the cliff as a good resting spot, the party may attempt to clear an area at the base of the cliff so it provides better shelter.
Requires a successful Craft or Athletics check.

Craft (DC 12) or Athletics (DC 15):
You successfully improve the area to serve as shelter.

Dr. Lazarus:
You recognize this creature as a warg. Wargs hunt in packs and surround their prey like common wolves, but their cunning and penchant for taunting victims makes them easy to distinguish from their less-intelligent cousins. But despite their intelligence, wargs have simple desires for food and shelter, making them easy for evil humanoids such as orcs and hobgoblins to recruit to protect their camps or join them in battle. Most wargs are amenable to this arrangement, but if food should run out, wargs are more than willing to integrate goblinoid flesh into their diet.

It then returns its attention to the elf. "As you've gathered, I know this area quite well. I'd be happy to serve as a guide or protector for you or any who may follow, if you'd have me."

"My fee is rather modest really." continues the beast. "All I ask for in payment is a plump halfling or two. Surely, such a price is not one too steep for a band of Chelaxians, or Pathfinders for that matter." The creature sniffs the air and then eyes up Peregrine, even as the halfling is attempting to hide. The two wolves begin to salivate.

Apologies. It may have been a cut and paste error.

The warg readily avoids the first arrow filed by Lizzo, but in doing so, opens itself up readily to the other, which sinks deep into the beast's flesh.

FleasA creature bitten by a mangy wolf is sickened 1 for 1 minute unless it succeeds at a DC 14 Fortitude save. Spending an Interact action to scratch away the fleas removes the condition.

One wolf (black) sinks its teeth into Madzork, causing fleas buried within its mangy hide to leap onto the small Pathfinder. Another (red) rips into Dr. Lazarus.

Fortitude: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Lazarus winces from the wolf's bite, as the fleas disappear quickly. Seeing blood dripping from his wounds, the Doctor attempts some in-battle healing.

Battle Medicine: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Damage Healed: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (7, 4) + 2 = 13

Turning to the ranger, "Ahem, Isfan. I believe you have an opening. Just there."

Applying attack to wolf next to Isfan. Per core rules, I just double damage on crit.

Isfan cleaves one of the wolves (yellow) in half!

Converting the next action to a Step action, then applying attack roll.

Isfan makes short work of another wolf (black), leaving just a single mangy wolf (red) remaining.

COMBAT OVER

Looking through the heavy brush nearby, you see that other travelers had previously fallen prey to the warg. A partially eaten corpse lies nearby. Most of its gear is shredded, except for four remaining lesser elixirs of life.

Moving along down the mountain side, you find that the orc camp is exactly where Bark said it would be, about one day’s travel from Bark’s cabin.

Map of camp now up on Slides.

Between the walls of a ruined building stand a few hastily erected tents. Muddy footpaths run between the tents while carefully tended campfires emit only faint smoke.

Present within the camp are a number of orcs, many bearing wounds. A
heavily scarred woman (red) tends to some of the others, who are gathered warily around her.

No, but the party should given the number of encounters. The following have received Hero Points for their role in certain encounters:

Dr. Lazarus (for dealing with the Chelaxian nobles).
Isfan (for skills in assessing the cliff)
Lizzo (for sheer amount of damage inflicted to foes).

When the goblin speaks, the heavily scarred woman with the broken tusk brings her orc necksplitter, single-bladed bearded axe with a jagged blade, down near the feet of the small Pathfinder. She punctuates the act with sharp words in her native tongue.

Orc:

"We are quite capable! While you do not seem in much position to offer us anything, Weakling!"

"What is your business here?" she questions the party, loudly and in Common. The other orcs begin to gather more closely around her. Despite the wounded condition of her fellow tribesfolk, the woman speaks with strength and confidence.
The orc is hostile to Madzork only, at the moment.

Did anything come from Lazarus' Recall Knowledge check?

Dr. Lazarus steps forward to stand near Madzork. "Greetings. Pardon my goblin friend here. He doesn't get out much." Addressing the female, he says, "I'm Dr. Lazarus. We're Pathfinders scouting a trail through these mountains. You must be the group that the half-orc told us about." Lazarus takes a closer look around at the camp. Dr. Lazarus identifies the orcs as almost certainly being of the Shattered Fang tribe and readily discerns that the heavily-scarred woman is both the most skilled warrior and the band's leader. He believes that the orcs' attitude would like be improve by a gift or an offer to share a drink, especially if a party member were able to demonstrate that he could drink as well as the orcs can.
