When Leonie asks about how our ancestries brought us together, Lazarus replies matter-of-factly, "Why, my dear, we're all pathfinders, of course. Best field training on all of Golarion." He pauses and adds, "If you lot are serious about this line of work, you should seek them out."

When Jasper is showing his sketchbook to Isfan, Lazarus rummages through his pack to find one of his smaller tomes, Monsters of the Menador.
Nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Lazarus frowns. "My boy, I was planning to show you that your drawings aren't quite right, but regrettably, I left that book at the university."

Turning his attention to Dacian, he explains that hunting is far more difficult in the wild. "As you can see from this book I was showing Jasper, wild animals have many natural defenses."
Nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
He allows Dacian to look through the book.

When the Tilernos noble speaks up, Lazarus turns to her and nods, "You are quite correct that there's more to adventuring than tracking. I can't help but notice your climbing gear..."
Athletics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
He continues, "These knots are slip knots. Oh dear. No, this is very dangerous. You want garda knots for climbing. Let me show you." With Savevi's permission, he reties the knots properly. Treating her as one of his students, the Doctor has her practice till she has the idea.

"Look here, you will never find a better bow or arrows--nor a better archer."

“Your bow and quiver look like it they cost a good deal of money, but it gets a lot harder when those in the wild start to fight back. While fletching is definitely important, turkey feathers are my favorite, stealth and surprise can make all the difference.”

Lizzo proceeds to demonstrate how you can blend in with the foliage, and fire an initial shot unseen.

After spending some time Dacian and his bow, Lizzo shares his knowledge of tracking and identification with Jasper.

He takes him on a quick walk under the tree canopy, on the lookout for scat.

"Here, these looks like rabbit droppings. If you dig in and get a closer look, you can learn even more."

Nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

With that, Lizzo picks up a few of the droppings and crushes them in his hands. He sifts through the mixture with the claw on his index finger and points out a few things...

"This is the remnants of a goodberry, if we can find the bush it would make a great place to setup snares. Find what they eat, and go to the source."

Quote:
"First venture?" Amayas repeats, before quickly taking a drink as if stalling for time. "Why, I come from a long-line of hunters and adventurers. Many a night have I spent out in the wilds of my family's estate, stalking prey. The forest there was, of course, not quite like this area. More temperate for sure. Different prey. But, the wilds are the wilds, so to speak, not much difference between land or another."

"I think you are mistaken on this point. Aa different land means a different climate. When I first left my homelnds of the katapeshi deserts and came to the north I was very lucky to travel with an elven friend who gave me hints about travelling in the cold before I found myself in the middle of some snowy mountains with no way back."

Nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 It shall not be

Isfan turns to Leonie replying " We are all brought together by a common goal ourselves. We all joined the Pathfinder Society to explore the mysteries of the land. And we swore to support each other wherever we need it."

"Now We came here in search for a new pathway between your friendly nations and we are fully commited to find that and support and complement each other in the quest for that goal."

Not being too keen on speaking to the Chelaxians, and seeing that his companions had fielded most of the questions, Peregrine begins prepping dinner over the fire. He begins making a stew and says to Lizzo, "Do you think you can get a rabbit or two? It will give the stew a little more body."

From his pack he pulls out a small box that he carries a bit of seasoning in. "Just because we are out in the wild, doesn't mean we have to eat bland food and trail rations all the time."

Once the stew is done he invites everyone to have a bowl, including the Chelaxians.

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

As the doctor and lizardfolk provide pointed advice to the novice nobles, the countenance of each begins to fall, particularly that of the band's de facto leader Amyas Charthagnion. "It would appear that, perhaps, we are out of our depth, in danger even," he quietly says to the others. "In the morning, we shall head home."

The decision initially chafes some of the noble band, Dacian in particular, who questions his compatriots as to why they look up to Amyas rather than to him, but this attitude quickly fades as Amyas smartly, but respectfully, references the notable inadequacies within the nobles' skill sets.

Sarevi Tilernos pipes up. "I had intended this journey to be one that honored the adventurous sp irit of my sister. She was a Knight of Ozem who was slain when the Whispering Tyrant destroyed the former nation of Lastwall. However, I suppose that my getting lost or, worse, my dyying here in the wilderness would do nothing to honor that."

With the decision made, it seems as if a weight has been lifted from the shoulders of the nobles.

With Isfan's mention of the party being Pathfinders, the general mood of the nobles improves. Jasper Caperinas is visibly excited to meet Pathfinders. "My family has holdings in Absalom." he says appreciatively. "A few of my family members owe their lives to the Pathfinder Society. A group of agents came to their defense when the city was besieged by fiends!"

Leonie Ciucci seems to have a dimmer view of the Pathfinder Society than her compatriots. "I've heard quite a bit about your Pathfinder
Society,"
she says. "Very little of it good."

"Now, now." Amyas intervenes. "These people have been both helpful and gracious to us. Indeed, we owe them for their kindness, though there is little we can do to pay them back." the noble rummages through his pack and retrieves a small number of documents.

"Here," he says handing the stack over to the Pathfinders. "This is all the research that we have amassed so far for our attempted expedition. Maps and charts, mostly, that we were able to purchase."

Though incomplete, the documents cover much of the territory and indicate likely passes for a sustainable route.
This earns the PCs 3 Discovery Points.

The provision of good company and hot stew, so easily secured by the Pathfinders, affirms the young nobles' decision to depart the mountain and leaves the Chelaxians with a lasting, positive impression toward the Pathfinder Society and the Horizon Hunters.

In the morning, the nobles amicably part way with you. Heading southward as you head on your way. After passing through the foothills, you arrive at the
feet of the mountains. The lower reaches are covered in dense pine forest and traversing the steep terrain becomes increasingly difficult. Your journey is otherwise unremarkable. Several days after departing from the nobles, you come across a swift‑flowing mountain stream. Here, the dense forest opens up to a gently sloping clearing, cut across by the brook.

Please state the Exploration Mode used by your PC through the area and place your token within the yellow "START" area on the Map.

Enjoying the evening meal a great deal, Lazarus nods to Peregrine and Lizzo. "Delicious, gentlemen. Thank you. Every bit as good as what my staff prepares. And they have the benefit of a full kitchen."

Dr. Lazarus bows his head when Sarevi speaks of the fate of her sister. "Losing loved ones is difficult. Not long ago, I too lost someone dear to me. I understand the desire to avenge them, but we must settle for honoring them as best we can." Addressing all the nobles, "I encourage you all to consider the training the Pathfinder society can provide for your future adventures."

Knowing the nobles made the right decision, Lazarus packs up and makes his way through the forest with the others.

Madzork recognizes the aggressive birds as ravens. He knows that these birds, due to their hollow bones, are particularly susceptible to clubs and similar bludgeoning weapons.

Upon spying the Pathfinders approaching the brook, the ravens emit a series of loud cries filling the air with a cacophony of sounds as the birds set to flight as a swarming mass. The murders approach the party swiftly, engulfing the Pathfinders almost instantly under an assault of flapping wings and sharp, piercing beaks!

Among the nests, you find the ravens have collected several shiny items in their remaining nests. Most are worthless, but some of the shiny stones the birds collected are actually raw gemstones.
The raw gemstones represent one Treasure Bundle.

It is evident that the river poses an obstacle to any future trade caravan seeking to pass through. It flows swiftly but is not too broad.

Swimming across it requires a successful DC 15 Swim check.

Additionally, there is more that skilled trailblazers may be able to discern about potential routes.
The PCs can attempt the following checks. These are NOT secret checks, so feel free to post your rolls for each. Note, however, that there are penalties for critical failures as well as benefits for successes. The checks are:

• Nature or Survival to identify local wildlife.

• Nature or Herbalism Lore to identify local plant life to see if the stream would be a good resting spot for a caravan.

• Cartography Lore or Scribing Lore check, or a Crafting check, to chart the terrain.

• Nature, Hills Lore, Mountain Lore, Scouting Lore to find the best place to ford the stream.

• Acrobatics check to try and bravely find a fordable spot by trial and error.

• Craft to select a bridge location.

Survival +4

While he is at it he also trys to get a feeling which other wildlife they might meet in this area to be well prepared.

Survival to identify local wildlife: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

Lastly he will work together with the doctor in finding a fordable spot.

Survival +6

Dr. Lazarus then focuses his attention on charting possible routes:

• Survival to identify local wildlife.
Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

• Nature to identify local plant life to see if the stream would be a good resting spot for a caravan.
Nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

• Scribing Lore check to chart the terrain.
Scribing Lore: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

• Nature to find the best place to ford the stream.
Nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

• Craft to select a bridge location.
Crafting: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Thanks for the Aid, Isfan, but I don't think Survival works for finding a fordable spot, so maybe use that excellent roll for your own Nature, Survival, or Scouting Lore check. Sounds like we need as many successes as possible.

When Isfan attempts to Aid Lazarus in a Nature check, Lazarus politely declines. "My young friend. I think we'll cover more ground if we maximize our time with our own investigations concurrently."

I really think that the 23 you rolled for Nature would be better off on your own Nature check. My guess is that we're counting up total successes here. Let's assume Lazarus is a little too arrogant to accept Aid on his Nature checks.

During their chat, the Doctor notices Isfan is still dealing with a minor wound. "Oh...you're hurt. You should've said something. This should only take a few seconds."
Medicine-Battle Medicine: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3) + 2 = 7
Doctor Lazarus affixes a bandage with some ointment to Isfan's scratch. "There...how's that?"

If we're still trying to get more successes and if there's still time, I guess he'll try one more activity that he didn't try before, since he was leaving Acrobatics for others.
Once he's done tending to Isfan, if there's still time, he'll try to find a fordable spot using trial and error.

Dr. Lazarus, Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Isfan can garner no further information from his examination of the tracks, but the doctor concludes that the scuff marks on the trees and partial footprints are clearly left from passage of bipedal medium humanoids.

The party collects much in the way of useful information regarding potential routes.
The party now has a total of 13 Discovery Points.

Dr. Lazarus chooses an optimal spot for a bridge. While a later engineering team would almost certainly be capable of constructing a functioning bridge, the party may improvise a sturdy one nevertheless and save a later crew some time and effort.
This requires at least two lengths of rope and a successful Craft check.

Lizzo handily locates the ideal location to ford the stream. You believe the party may be able to do so by moving a few boulders into better positions.
This requires a successful Athletics check.

The Pathfinders successfully construct a suitable bridge and ford.
The party now has a total of 15 Discovery Points.

Moving on from the area, it is several more days travel before the party moves out of the mountain forest, crosses the tree line, and approaches the snow line. Without cover from the trees, the freezing temperatures can quickly turn deadly.

Please indicate if you are NOT wearing the winter clothing gifted by the Venture-Captain.

The Pathfinders continue traveling upward and approach a wide valley that’s a clear pass over the mountain range. The wind has built up layers of snow on the slope; however, the bottom layers are unstable, as they lie on top of loose scree. When disturbed it might trigger an avalanche.

Each PC (and companion size small or larger) must attempt an Athletics check to pass the scree without disturbance.

Survival or Mountain Lore (trained)(DC 15):
You know that splitting into smaller groups for safety will reduce the risk and severity of avalanche and make the route up the slope easier. Tethering members of the group together might also make the climb easier.
This grants PCs within a group a +1 circumstance bonus, as if they had successfully aided each other.

Looking bewildered as he treads through the snow, Dr. Lazarus looks uncomfortable. He nods to Isfan. "I've not spent much time in these conditions, but your plan makes sense. If we rope people together, do we need a volunteer to go first?" He looks around to the others.

Do we simply need to say "we're tethering" and we all get +1, or does someone need to lead the way so the rest of us get the bonus?
