Will save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Fifi yells-"The door is alive! What the heck!"-getting ready to slash at it, resisting its command.

GM Watery Soup |

Ghostwriter, I believe you misunderstand - the door is the enemy. It was shape-shifted into a door and is now its natural form (a blob with a maw). I'm going to post the attack listed in your tagline, please correct if necessary.
Ghostwriter:
Composite Longbow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 201d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Ghostwriter puts an arrow in the thing. However, it does less damage than Ghostwriter expects.
Patros swings, but misses it as it's still shifting shape and difficult to target.
The enemy steps back, smites good, and attacks Ghostwriter.
Please correct me if this is wrong: I think it would naturally attack the creature that hurt it last. However, it does not have detect good, and the instructions specifically say that it should smite good on the first target it attacks. This will waste the smite good.
Gore: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26
2d6 + 10 ⇒ (3, 2) + 10 = 15
Slam: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
2d6 + 10 ⇒ (5, 3) + 10 = 18
The enemy hits Ghostwriter really hard. Twice.
Round 1:
Ghostwriter (-33 hp, revise attack?)
Patros
Enemy (-2 hp)
Orin (prone)
Reggie (Will)
Fifi

![]() |

Will Save (Reggie): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Will Save (Rowdy: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
As Rowdy starts to lay down under him, Reggie attempts to slide off quickly.
Fast Dismount (Ride Check): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
He's not quite fast enough to make it graceful and stumbles a bit. He drops his shield and pulls his lance free of where it is limbered on Rowdy's saddle.

"What is a door? What is a monster, or an enemy? My friends, I could expound on these questions, elucidating your ganglia, and titilating your tender hearts, but I believe that the truth is self evident. We know what a door is! And this is not a door!"
Standard action begin Bardic music +1 to hit/weapon damage within 30 ft.
Orin stands. Move action stand up, provokes if within reach

![]() |

It wasn't clear what was happening. I assumed it was a haunt actually. I did ready an attack and will stick with that. Could I also take a 5 foot steps back? Can it take precision damage? I think it would still be flat footed.
Hidden strike damage: 3d4 ⇒ (1, 4, 2) = 7

GM Watery Soup |

Sorry for the confusion. It is flat-footed, which is hilarious. This master of disguise (DC 44 to spot it!) was lying in wait for years, and manages to get surprised by its first meal. It had one job!
And yes, you can step back. Then it won't, so it can still reach you.

GM Watery Soup |

an 18 misses it's flat footed? yikes
It wasn't flat-footed to you, because it had acted in the surprise round when you attacked it. However, thought Watery, 18 does hit his regular AC ... Patros didn't roll an 18, did he? I double-checked: apparently, I looked at the last number on the line and thought you rolled a 16.
Retcon: Ghostwriter hits (and the precision does go through), and so does Patros, but Patros also feels like not all the damage was effective.
Orin begins singing. Reggie tries to figure out what's going on with Rowdy.
Round 1:
Universal: +1 attack/damage within 30' of Orin
Ghostwriter (-33 hp)
Patros
Enemy (-20 hp)
Orin
Reggie
Fifi

![]() |

Fifi doubles back and goes for a slash against the creature, trying to get her scimitar to pierce its inner mouth. (Most definitely provoking an AoO)
She yells-"Let us deal with this creature quickly! Foul demondoor!"-and preventing it from advancing.
Scimitar att: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Scimitar dmg: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 slashing damage, plus an extra 1 point of fire damage.

GM Watery Soup |

The enemy swipes at Fifi as she charges up.
Slam: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
Bludgeoning: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (3, 1) + 7 = 11
She ducks aside and slashes with her scimitar, connecting. But it seems to do very little damage. Adding +1 from inspire.
Round 2:
Universal: +1 attack/damage within 30' of Orin
Ghostwriter (-33 hp)
Patros
Enemy (-22 hp)
Orin
Reggie
Fifi

Taking a risk that it doesn't have Combat Reflexes.
The Ghostwriter reaches into his bandolier and retrieves a scroll of bless weapon. He attempts to cast the spell of Patros's blade.
Linguistics: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (20) + 18 = 38
Only needed a three or higher
Patros's blade now radiates pure goodness.
Hopefully that will bypass the DR

![]() |

Let's hope this will help fell this beast...the swordsman says as he presses his attack.
attack: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 12 + 1 = 261d8 + 5 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 5 + 1 = 15

GM Watery Soup |

Patros's glowy weapon does, in fact, slice through more easily.
The enemy tries to gore Patros with a spike, but its pseudopod is knocked away by Patros's parry, and then stabbed.
Slam: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20
Bludgeoning: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 3) + 7 = 11
A second attack tries to catch Patros off-guard, but after years of waiting, the enemy's skills are a bit rusty.

Ghost, step back...get yourself healed up. Keep pressing our advantage, Fifi...we can kill this thing. Patros says, slashing and parrying as he dances between the beast's flailing arms.

Fifi slashes at the creature with a spin, deflecting the strikes with her shield. She sidesteps to allow someone to get a good hit in after her-"Can't beat our combined strength!"
Scimitar att: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 10 + 1 = 24
Scimitar dmg: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 = 7 slashing damage, plus an extra 1 point of fire damage.

![]() |

Without an obvious path forward into the fray, Orin draws his heavy crossbow and takes a shot, tossing his sword and hand crossbow into the air, keeping three items aloft with the juggler's ease:
Heavy crossbow, fired one handed: 1d20 + 10 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 1 - 4 = 13
Damage: 1d10 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 = 5
He continues his disertation, "But if this is an enemy, is it any less a door? Does not the journey through combat open new pathways to those brave enough to take them?"
Move action to draw cross bow, combat juggling ability to hold 3 items, standard to shoot, free actions to maintain inspire courage and to drop heavy crossbow after the shot.

Badly injured, the Ghostwriter heeds Patros's advice, stepping away from the fray to drink a healing potion.
"Don't die! You don't want your tombstonw to read "Was killed by a door!""
CLW potion: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

"At least the door ain't a jar," Reggie declares. "I ain't never figured out how a door can be a jar."
He waits for a moment when the two big folks in front of him aren't completely blocking the way and makes a stab with his lance.
+1 lance plus IC: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 1 = 11
piercing: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 1 = 10
It's not as easy to find as it looks...
Then, as Rowdy stands up, he leaps into the saddle.

![]() |

Rowdy stands up, looking around with his ears and head raised, trying to figure out why no one is saying what a good boy he was for obeying so quickly.
Then, Reggie is back on his back and everything is ok.

GM Watery Soup |

Patros and Fifi continue knocking on the enemy, while Orin jams at the jamb. Ghostwriter, at the threshold of death, quaffs a potion. Meanwhile, Reggie shimmies up onto Rowdy.
The enemy is furiously unhinged, as it keeps slamming at Patros.
The first attack is parried again, with Patros closing in on the enemy's vital organs.
Slam: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29
Damage: 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (6, 3) + 10 = 19
A sticky, adhesive substance grapples Patros as he is hit.

Ghostwriter (-25 hp)
Patros (-19 hp, grappled)
Enemy (-110 hp, grappler)
Orin
Reggie
Fifi

![]() |

Fifi continues her offensive and goes for a particularly zealous strike at the creature, as she yells-"Hey! No harming my friends!"-her hair growing ever larger as she swings her scimitar.
She sidesteps north to allow Reggie to hit the creature, spinning with her swing
Scimitar att: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 10 + 1 = 29
Scimitar confirm: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 10 + 1 = 16

Patros wiggles, but Fifi's slash does in the enemy. It melts into a formless blob.
End of combat!
The enemy leaves no treasure.
I will assume that some sort of healing happens.

Past where the doors used to be, murals on either side of this long hallway feature ragged looking humans bowing before a powerfully built humanoid male with horns protruding from his head, arms, and down his spine. Patches of red flesh with pustules cover most of the mural, obscuring a line of spiky script.
Perception Reggie: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Perception Fifi: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8

Perception Patros: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
The team begins to investigate the red flesh, but Ghostwriter suddenly holds up a hand.
"There's a trap ahead," he declares. Red box.
You can try to Disable Device the trap directly, or you can try to remove the red flesh (Disable Device to remove the flesh, Knowledge (planes) for other ideas) for a clue on how to bypass it.

"Come, come, gentlemen, let me heal some at least of these wounds!"
On Patros
Cure Light: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
On Ghostwriter
Cure Light: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Saving just one of my cast CLW for an emergency, but might as well spend the other two
Looking at the trap, Orin frowns, "Oh, no, this is quite. . . disturbing. I wish I knew more. . ."

![]() |

Fifi is glad the demon door is brought down, and she inspects the formless blob without really knowing what she is looking at. Still, she kneels down and says-"We may be headed down a dark path, but the Everlight will show me the way. Sarenrae, let your light shine down upon us."-her hair pulsating with positive energy and erupting in a healing wave.
Channel Energy!: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5) = 12
(Patros should be up to full, Ghostwriter should be at -3 hp)

![]() |

I have a wand...save your charge..
What kind of sinister trap is this? Seeping pus pockets? Ugh...disgusting... Patros says as he looks them over.
Hmmm...perhaps we could take out the pimples carry on?
is it possible we could shoot the pustules? are they big enough to shoot?

![]() |

The Ghostwriter will talk someone into using his wand of infernal healing on him for the last bit.
[b}"Red pustules...disgusting...but essentially mechanical in nature. Like plump little wineskins filled with pure filth. What do you think will happen to me if I pop one? Anybody have any theories?"[/b]
The Ghostwriter starts to take out his tools, ready to disable the pustules the best he can.
I'm assuming its not a magical trap. He can't actually disable magical traps. No trapfinding.
[ooc]Ghostwriter will wait to see if anyone knowledgable about planar matters will weigh in on these, but if no one steps up...
Disable Device: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17

"Well, this place is just gross. I don't know what poppin' one 'a them pimple's is gonna do, but I wouldn't try it, if I could help it," Reggie says, his face twisting with distaste as he examines the place.
He guides Rowdy slowly down the hall, stopping when the trap is found.
"Sorry, folks, I don't know nothin' 'bout this type of stuff," he says as people start examining and breaking down the trap.

GM Watery Soup |

Apparently, nobody has Knowledge (planes)!
Ghostwriter tries to pry off the red flesh, but it's not so easy.
The pustules are large enough to target. Just tell me what kind of weapon you're using and roll for damage.

![]() |

Patros has a longbow...only 1d8 damage...but i do have 40 arrows, although 20 are blunt...never know when you will meet skeletons...i'll roll 6 for now..if i need more, let me know
Stand back...I can deal with this... the Taldan says as he draws his bow and aims at the pustules.
arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 1
arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 1
arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 4
arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 3
arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 6
arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 7

GM Watery Soup |

Stand back
I'll assume everyone heeds Patros's warning. As he pierces the pustules, they erupt, sending acid splashing to adjacent squares. You'll need to deal 30 damage, so I'll roll arrows until you hit 30.
Arrow #7: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Arrow #8: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Arrow #9: 1d8 ⇒ 8
By removing the hazard, Patros reveals the full phrase: “Servants shall grovel at their master’s feet.”

![]() |

they were cold iron arrows, if that helps...lol...never know if the pimples have the devil subtype..
Well, I can actually say for once, my blade or my charm solved the day. Who knew? Patros says as he winks.

![]() |

"Ingenious, Patros! Sometimes the best solutions are the most straightforward. Let's see who the best marksman is!"
The Ghostwriter eagerly fires a few of his arrows at the pustules.
I know arrows are cheap, but the Ghostwriter would happily fire half the arrows.

![]() |

"Aw dang it! Are we gonna have to bow down to this statue to get by without gettin' killed?" Reggie says as he realizes what the phrase says.
He looks around at his companions for confirmation.

![]() |

I'm not one for grovelling...although there was a lass back home who would make me consider it....Bettina is her name...well, now...does this phrase mean anything? Any religious reference? Patros says as he snaps out of his reminiscing back to the subject at hand.

![]() |

"If we have to grovel, I guess I have nothing to lose. After all the mask prevents anyone from embarrassing me at a dinner party later on."
The Ghostwriter will kneel before the statue.

GM Watery Soup |

Ghostwriter and Reggie crawl up to the statue, and do not trigger the trap.
Moving Ghostwriter and Reggie on the map.

Ghostwriter: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Reggie: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
A black marble statue stands at the intersection. It is a hulking humanoid with elephantine feet and large razor-sharp horns covering its body. Spiky script carved into the plinth compounds the sinister nature of the figure.
Valais follows Ghostwriter and Reggie, walking right through the trap with no obvious effects.
As she gazes at the statue, Valais winces slightly and raises a hand to the demonic half of her face. “This must be MY GRAND COUNTENANCE. Here’s our proof that we are in the right place. I was thinking that we should TURN LEFT.” Valais’s eyes widen slightly as she continues, “No, we should not turn left. YOU WILL TURN LEFT. What I’m trying to say is that we should look around carefully before proceeding TO THE LEFT, WORMS.” Valais raises her voice, “Before proceeding in whichever direction you choose. The demons have never been this insistent before. We must be close to our destination.”

![]() |

Grumpily, Ghostwriter asks Valais, "Do you know why your demons want to go left?". The vigilante looks down both corridors, feeling a tug to go rightte out of defiance.

![]() |

"I can only assume there is something of note there- perhaps dangerous, but are we not searching for danger?"

![]() |

"Maybe it's only trying to send us into a trap," Reggie points out.
"Maybe the important stuff is to the right and it only wants us to go the other way so we don't find it."

GM Watery Soup |

Valais ponders for a moment.
"I don't know why the demons want you to go TO THE LEFT."
Shyael and the cultists arrive at the main door. The cultists immediately prostrate themselves on the ground when they see the statue.

![]() |

"Well, no use thinking it over too far."
Orin begins cautiously moving down the leftward path, sword and crossbow in hand.
After combat I retrieved, reloaded and stored my heavy crossbow

![]() |

Reggie shrugs. "Good 'nough for me," he says, following Orin down the left hand all and flanking out to the side when it is wide enough.
"I don't s'pose you can convince them to stay here 'til we get back, can you?" he asks Shyael, indicating the cultists.
"It ain't that I don't trust them, but..."
...there's a reason they're called cultists, he thinks.

GM Watery Soup |

Everyone who moves down the left corridor needs to make a Will save. Orin and Reggie are first, if either of them recognize the spell, they can warn the others.
For 10 hours, you must regard Laktharis as a trusted friend and ally. The spell does not enable him to control you, but you perceive his words and actions in the most favorable way. Any act by him that threatens you will break the spell.
To be clear, I rolled Perception for all of you (earlier) and you all failed, so this isn't a case of "nobody said they were looking so gotcha".

I have a feeling its connection to Valais, and the presence of the cultists behind us is evidence that he might be just a god looking out his people."-still, she grips her scimitar expecting more traps like the door.
She stops when she sees the door and says-"Let's check for traps on the door before entering"-smiling at the group.

I assume whatever misfortunes befell the followers of Latharkis was more likely a consequence of the negligence and sloth of his followers rather that malevolent intent of the god himself," the vigilante muses.
