12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

Okay everyone - this is where we'll be doing character creation/ooc discussion and all that good stuff!

I'm folding together my initial pitch to some of you, as well as some great questions I've been asked to put together a nice centralized overview.

The Plot (Birds Eye View):

A terrible disaster has left the Starfinder Society in ruins. The formerly preeminent organization has lost its leadership, much of its gear and materials, its best agents, and its status and prestige among the Pact Worlds.

You'll be playing new Starfinders, who will be working to restore and rebuild the power and glory of the Society while holding together its disparate elements, and trying to uncover the truth of what happened in the disaster of The Scoured Stars.

***

The campaign will go from levels 1-10, and will be based on a skeleton of pre-written scenarios, and fun down-time shenanigans.

The overall vibe I'm expecting is that while the plot as a whole is serious, the action will often not be. Think Deep Space Nine for the setting, but think Guardians of the Galaxy for what I expect the PCs to be like! A given of the campaign is that your character wants to be a Starfinder, but there's a lot of reasons why that might be.

Content warnings: The game should be kept to stuff suitable for PG-13 movies/cable television.

***

Character Creation: As standard in the core book/archives of nethys. Options should be assumed to be kosher if they're Starfinder Society approved, but I'll often okay other 1st party options/gear - just ask!

Depending on the final count of the group I will likely be dropping in with a rotating cast of NPCs, who will mainly serve as a means for me to exhibit different aspects of the setting/factions.

***

Starship Creation: This part will be a group project, so my role will mainly be to mediate/explain stuff, but if a custom ship doesn't feel worth the homework, I'm happy to find something in the dockyards for you all. (As a general sense of things, ~1/3 of the missions I've got planned will significantly involve your starship.)

Hey yall, gyrfalcon here. I'm playing Doctor Urmfehrumah Newblossom. They are:

* A Raxilite, which means they are a 16 inch tall, hermaphroditic, plant-creature with a poppy growing from their head.
* A Biohacker by class, with a great fascination with improving themself and others via biohackery. Mechanically, they're a 3/4 BAB class specializing in buffs, debuffs, and general support.

Crunch is complete in profile (minus gear...and with the caveat that I totally don't understand what I'm doing so may've made significant errors).

Fluff is underway. What I've written so far is mostly family history (and species history, filling in the gaps for an uncommon race):

Quote:

Raxil was first discovered by Lashunta from Castrovel twenty-some years ago. Urmfehrumah’s parent, Ihphraxah (now eighteen years old), was one of the first Raxilites born on Castrovel, and Ihpraxah has sprouted a large family of genetics researchers, xenobiologists, toxicologists, and biohackers, all of whom are swept up in the marvelous cross-pollination of Raxilite and Lashunta biotechnology that’s rocking both of their worlds.

Along the way, Urmfehrumah’s elder sibling Oslahumeh made a fascinating discovery: Based on partial scraps from Pathfinder Chronicles and other fragmented historical documents from pre-Gap Golarion that were preserved on Castrovel, they’ve learned of the First Biohacker, Nyugusk Newblossom, the Transmogrifying Lotus. It seems he was one of a team of mighty pre-Gap Pathfinders called the Absolom Freaks. Records suggest that one of those Freaks actually ascended to divinity. While sources are somewhat spotty and conflicting as to exactly which of them ascended, Ihpraxah and their offspring see a great deal of evidence to suggest that that deity is Nyugusk Newblossom, the Transmogrifying Lotus, who taught his followers to bravely hack themselves toward perfection. Oslahumeh has even suggested that Nyug’s name is a hint that perhaps he was a Raxilite who made their way to Golarion.

Given all they’ve learned, Ihphraxah’s family has assumed the surname Newblossom. While Urmfehrumah and her family are not particularly religious, they’re all quite proud at the thought that an ascended god is one of their distant kin--the first Raxilite deity, and the patron of Biohackers everywhere.

More to be written about Dr Urmfehrumah themself!...but for those who don't know, Nyugusk is a retired character from a Pathfinder game that Jelani (player of Acoria Sacatha, above) DM'd. It is totally not canon and most likely not true that Nyug ever attained divinity...but really, who's to say? (Cwethan, clearly...if it ever comes up...)

Hello! Gyrfalcon asked if I was interested and here I am! I'm thinking about playing an escapee from the mob, or whatever the equivalent would be in this setting (I'm not sure if the Sczarni are still around or not.) Planning on soldier that stole most of their gear when they left. Probably going to be a goofball that contemplates odd things, like the meaning behind the existence of peanut butter sandwiches.

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

Welcome Adam!

There are tons of gangs throughout Absalom Station* if you're looking for a place to start. It should be simple enough to find or create a gang that has the kind of flavor you're looking for, and I'd be happy to rustle up the names of some sample crews :-)

Setting Info: Absalom Station*:
Absalom Station is the cultural hub of the Pact Worlds, and the location of the Lorespire Complex - the HQ of the Starfinders. Races from every planet in the system, including those once prominent on lost Golarion, can be found on the station.

I was also invited by Gyrfalcon. Strange days =P

Since we don't have an engineering focused character, I'll go ahead and make a technomancer.

Yeah, hi everyone, I am Acoria. I am still working on backstory, but I am a hot shot tomboy pilot/warrior type.

Building a starship sounds really fun to me, unless the rules are super clunky/not fun.

It will be hard to build one effectively without having played before though. Is it possible to mess up a ship by 'doing it wrong' and making a really weak/not optimal ship?

Stalwart here. I'm looking at playing a Shakalta -- a dual minded energy being. I like the concept of the alien, but I'm required to multiclass which will be tricky to pull off and be useful to the party at higher levels. I'm thinking Envoy+something else.

Adam and Vrog, glad you're joining! Cwethan asked if anyone knew some great RPers to invite, and I suggested y'all.

Stalwart, this thread has a bunch of opinions about what Shakalta builds might be viable. Several Envoy builds are mentioned in it.

It's a little complex (especially if you haven't read it before) but it's not much harder than understanding item creation in Pathfinder.

It might theoretically be possible to "mess up" your ship design, but everything is pretty modular, so changes are emminantly fixable.

Male Probably human Computer Scientist 1/ Character Synthesizer 20/ Crazy 99

Hey Vrog! Fancy seeing you here. :D

As far as gangs go, if I have free reign to make one, within reason, I'm all for that. I'm thinking of playing a humanish soldier with some skills in mechanics to help Vrog's character out. I know someone was planning on playing a Solarion which seems to be melee focused, so I was thinking of a heavy-weapons specialist that likes smacking things from range and is a bit of a gun nut/demolitions expert. They'll probably be the gunner for the ship.

Now, while that's percolating in the back of my head, I need to work on something for another game that Vrog and I are in.

Aight. I've edited (and slightly expanded) Urmfehrumah's background. The latest version is spoilered at the top of their profile.

Gear still to come.

Also, I welcome review / comments / suggestions from all. I'm 100% new to Starfinder.

--EDIT--

In terms of personality, Dr Newblossom had a fairly sunny disposition. As a three-year-old with a PhD, I think it's safe to say *everything* they know comes from a book (or rather high speed, chemically supported eLearning), and they will likely be surprised by the ways the Real World differs from what they've learned in school.

Doc Newblossom is looking good so far!

One thing that's definitely worth thinking through as you create your characters and see how they mesh together in a group are Starship Roles.

There's a whole bunch of ways that you can help out during Starship combat, but making sure everyone's not going down the same path can be very important!

***

The Roles

The Captain: Your role in combat is about encouraging the crew while taunting enemies into making critical mistakes. A starship can have only one captain at a time. You can use Intimidate, Diplomacy, or the skills of another role to help your allies, and you can use Bluff and Intimidate to mess with your enemies!

The Chief Mate: You know every circuit and conduit within their starship’s mechanical and electronic systems, and are bold enough to take risks with the physical levers, valves, and other intricacies that can help your crew escape from or win dire combat scenarios. Despite the name you can have any number of Chief Mates/Deck Officers. You can use Acrobatics or Athletics in order to benefit most other roles.

Engineer: You work with your starship’s power core and engines to achieve maximum efficiency, grant extra power in times of need, and divert power to vital systems as necessary. You can also repair damaged systems. A starship can have any number of Engineers. This role only uses the Engineering skill.

Gunner: You operate your starship’s various weapon systems, using them to neutralize or destroy enemy vessels. A starship can have at most one gunner (or gunner team) per weapon mount. This will basically be ranged attacks, but you can use your ranks in Piloting in place of your BaB.

Magic Officer: You deeply understand this truth and provide both mystical knowledge and resources that can push the starship’s interaction with the inherent magic around it to new heights. You can have any number of Magic Officers. This roll uses Mysticism to augment other roles.

Pilot: You plot the course of the ship. Each starship has speed and maneuverability ratings, but you can push your starship beyond these boundaries with enough skill. A starship can have only one pilot. As you might expect, you'll use the Piloting skill

Science Officer: You use the starship’s computers, scanners, and other systems to identify threats, target foes, and navigate hazards. A starship can have any number of science officers. This role uses Computers in order to acquire information and help other roles.

You may notice that there are more roles than party members - don't worry! The point is that no matter how your character works, that they should have a way to usefully contribute :-)

Cool! Can one fill > 1 role at a time? And if not, are some more important than others?

Doc Newblossom is a natural fit for Science Officer or Engineer (+8 to each, as I've currently built them)...or for that matter Captain (+7 to Diplomacy)...assuming folks trust having a three-year-old for their captain. ;-)

I see Acoria (Jelani) has +5 Piloting (and the Ace Pilot theme) so would presumably be as the Pilot or Gunner.

Excited to see what yall build (or hear where you're leaning)!

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

You can only fill 1 role at a time (though for some roles if no one's filling them you can do a lesser version of their options), but it's also very easy to switch roles. I have often had characters like Doc Newblossom start off fights as the Science Officer (also important since that's who rolls the ships 'perception' checks!!), and then switch to Engineering if the ship's taking too much damage and/or they feel like they've gotten enough information.

So, interestingly enough, the Envoy seems to be tailor-made to be the ship's captain. I've got class skills in Bluff, Intimidate and Diplomacy, and a class feature that lets me boost my Sense Motive and one other skill with a d6.

So far, no one's angled for the captain's chair and I'm not dead set for it. But, I think Voxey/Yexov, the dual-souled Shakalta might be a good choice to be the captain.

(If you want an old married couple in one body bickering over how to run a ship to be your captain!)

I think everyone else has

It sounds like we've got:
CAPTAIN - Voxey & Yexoy
PILOT - Acoria
GUNNER - [Adam]
ENGINEER (and backup MAGIC OFFICER) - [Vrog]
SCIENCE OFFICER (and backup ENGINEER) - Doc Urmfehrumah Newblossom

UNFILLED: Magic officer & Chief Mate.

...and it seems like if we really Chief Mate support some day, someone with Acro or Athletics can sub in for that.

Sounds reasonable to me. Cwethan, any concerns?

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

Ooh I like Voxey/Yexov's avatar!

No worries Adam :-)
I'd rather everyone get a character they're happy with than sprint forwards and leave someone behind!

That said, we've got a long weekend coming up (for however much that changes people's weeks these days), and it would be great if folk have at least a first draft done by Monday. I say first draft since I won't really count anything as finalized until we hit level 2, and even then, Starfinder has very easy in-game ways of retraining most things!

***

Re: Starship roles - that looks good to me. The only thing I'd even pencil in a tweak for is that it can sometimes be nice to have someone else able to be on guns, but since that doesn't take special skills, it won't require careful building for it :-p

The main thing is that with this sort of setup, you're likely to get more use out of a single big gun, probably in a turret, with a cheaper secondary one for when more firepower's desired.

Speaking of avatars...do any of yall use the Paizo Campaign Tools Chrome extension?

If not, I recommend it...and if you do, here's a pic I suggest you add for Doc Newblossom.

Male Probably human Computer Scientist 1/ Character Synthesizer 20/ Crazy 99

I'm working on stating out my character, and I've hit a bit of a wall due to my lack of system knowledge. I want to build a walking tank, with power armor and variety of options to blow away opponents. I picked the Soldier class, and I'm now looking at fighting styles, and I'm leaning towards the Armor Storm style. the catch is that I kinda want her to be a dex-based sneakster, so I'm not sure if I'm trying to do too much here or not. I also haven't picked feats yet (I'm playing a human, so two feats to start with.)

Any suggestions or ideas?

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

Dex-based sneakster and Power Armor are a bit at cross purposes tbh.

That said, if you're already going high dex, pick up a class skill in Stealth from your Background, and maybe dump something into skill focus along the way you'll be able to make up for it - and that's honestly not that much of an investment if it's something you want to do. You could even give up a couple bonus feats to take the Powered Armor Jockey archetype if you wanted more upgrades and more speed/maneuverability in a suit. Star Knight takes up more of your feats, but is another fun one for some additional survivability (It doesn't immediately clock as lining up with 'runaway ganger,' but I could definitely imagine a character arcing from one to the other if that's a direction you find interesting).

***

So what I'd say is that the main thing you should do at start is don't fret too much about Power Armor since Armor Storm will take care of a lot of that for you. So here's a few early feats that might be worthwhile:
Sneaky Things: Skill Synergy/Skill Focus (stealth), Ambuscade, Divine Blessing (Lao Shu Po)
Boomy Things: Weapon Focus (heavy weapons), Grenade Mastery
Tanky Things: Toughness, Barricade, Bodyguard

Oh, also, if you're planning on using Power Armor/Heavy Weapons - make sure to start with a Strength of 12 or 13. Until you're in the suit you'll take a -2 to hit with Heavy Weapons if you don't have Strength 12, and you'll need a Strength of 13 for the Power Armor feat. Luckily at level 5 you'll get stat boosts, so a 12 can become a 14 for you at that point if you need.

@AdamWarnock - Just FYI, I plan to take Powered Armor Jockey when I meet the requirements. Acquiring powered armor and having that be an expertise of hers is going to be one of Acoria's main things.

I'm not saying you shouldn't wear powered armor, just that you won't be the only one in the party if you do. Sometimes people get weird about characters filling the same 'niches' or whatever so I just want to drop a heads up with what I'll be doing.

Male Probably human Computer Scientist 1/ Character Synthesizer 20/ Crazy 99

Acoria is mostly a melee fighter, right? Maonva, my character, is going to be filling a different niche, namely that of the ranged weapons specialist. I figured Power Armor would help her carry more guns at hire levels. Even if that wasn't the case, as long as we both got something to do, I'm happy sharing a niche.

@GM: First, thank you for your help! I know I am kinda working at cross purposes, but one of the things I've found to be fun in tabletop is trying things that people don't expect. Or at least things that aren't the norm. If I'm honest, I find the idea of a heavily armored gunslinger getting the drop on some poor schmuck funny.

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

Happy to help where I can :-)

Oh, and since I realized I'd casually tossed out 'just get it as a background' it's probably worth calling out that the Themes that get Stealth as a class skill are Street Rat and Themeless.

Male Probably human Computer Scientist 1/ Character Synthesizer 20/ Crazy 99

I still need to purchase gear, but I think I'm ready for a review. I present the cute, genki, bruiser known as Maonva, or Mao to her friends, Demo Girl to just about everyone else who's seen her handiwork.

Maonva Demo Girl Mazak:

A street rat from the worst parts of Absolom Station's underbelly, Maonva's options were limited. She could live a life of drudgery or she could work of the Sala Familia. From the time she was eight until the Salas were busted up four years ago, she bounced from job to job, but found her place as one of the guns bringing the heavy metal. She worked freelance for a broker called Puppetmaster Quid afterwards, at least until a golden opportunity arose. The Starfinders were in need of fresh blood, and Maonva had earned her moniker of Demo Girl.

The poor saps had no idea who they were taking on.

TRAITS
THEME - STREET RAT
THEME KNOWLEDGE
You grew up making your own way, without the benefits of a strong social safety net to protect and assist you. Even if your experience all comes from a single settlement, you have learned that certain roles within the slums and ghettos are, if not universal, still broadly applicable to a wide range of urban areas. As a result, you know the grittiest, most dangerous streets of any settlement like the back of your own hand (or other primary appendage). Reduce the DC of Culture checks to recall knowledge about local laws, the criminal underworld, rumors, and official and unofficial power players in the area (such as crime bosses, gangs, neighborhood leaders, and police) by 5. Reduce the DC of Survival checks to live off the land by 5. Stealth is a class skill for you, though if it is a class skill from the class you take at 1st level, you instead gain a +1 bonus to your Stealth checks. In addition, you gain an ability adjustment of +1 to Dexterity at character creation.

CLASS - SOLDIER
Hit Points: 7
Stamina Points: 7
Key Ability Score: DEX
Skill Points: 4+INT/level

PROFICIENCIES
Armor: Light, Heavy
Weapons: Basic Melee, Advanced Melee, Small Arms, Longarms, Heavy Weapons, Sniper Weapons, Grenades

PRIMARY FIGHTING STYLE
You have a preferred fighting style that represents the type of soldier you are. Each fighting style is composed of various style techniques that you learn as you gain experience. You must pick one fighting style upon taking your first soldier level, and once made, this choice cannot be changed.

PRIMARY STYLE TECHNIQUES - ARMOR STORM
At 1st level and every 4 levels thereafter, you gain a style technique unique to your primary fighting style.

Hammer Fist (Ex)
You treat any unarmed attack you make while wearing heavy or powered armor as being made with a battleglove (see page 187) with an item level equal to or lower than your soldier level, and you calculate damage for these attacks as if you had the melee striker gear boost (see page 112). If you have the melee striker gear boost, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with your unarmed attacks when using this ability. These unarmed attacks don’t benefit from other abilities that apply specifically to unarmed attacks (such as the Improved Unarmed Strike feat).

ARCHETYPE - POWER ARMOR JOCKEY
None until Level 6

RACIAL - HUMAN
Hit Points: 4
Ability Modifiers: +2 to any 1 ability score (DEX)
Size: Medium
Type: Humanoid(Human)

BONUS FEAT
Humans select one extra feat at 1st level.

SKILLED
Humans gain an additional skill rank at 1st level and each level thereafter.

FEATS
SKILL SYNERGY - Perception, Stealth
You understand how two skills work well together.

BENEFIT: Choose two skills. These skills become class skills for you. If one or both were already class skills, you gain a +2 insight bonus to those skill checks instead.

SPECIAL: You can take this feat multiple times. Its effects don’t stack. Each time you take it, it applies to two different skills.

WEAPON FOCUS - HEAVY WEAPONS
You have increased training in a particular weapon type, making it easier to hit your target.

PREREQUISITES: Proficiency with selected weapon type.

BENEFIT: Chose one weapon type (small arms, longarms, heavy weapons, etc.). You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls with that weapon type. If your base attack bonus is at least 3 lower than your character level (or your mechanic’s class level, if you are a drone), you gain a +2 bonus instead.

Happy to help where I can :-)

Oh, and since I realized I'd casually tossed out 'just get it as a background' it's probably worth calling out that the Themes that get Stealth as a class skill are Street Rat and Themeless.

Thanks! I was actually eyeing street rat before I asked for help. :)

By the way, are there any restrictions on buying gear other than cost?

Nice!

Mechanically, I was hoping to gain either Stealth or Acrobatics from my Theme...but *thematically* Biotechnician was really all that really made sense. I suspect I may just take Skill Synergy at some point, to get trained in both of them...and it makes some sense that all Doc has done so far is slurp up book learnin'.

Exo-Guardians

EAC: 14; KAC 17 // Combat Man. 25 // Stamina 8/8 // HP 13/13 // Fort +3; Ref +1; Will +2

Acoria was inspired by Starbuck from Battlestar Galatica and Bobbie Draper from The Expanse.

Here are my notes on her personality:
-Hot-headed and cocky fighter pilot, considered one of the best up and comers in the newly graduated class.
-Avid gambler
-Enjoys drinking whiskey, smoking cigars/blunts, MMA, and sex
-Jingoistic and dedicated to the Society and the Exo-Guardians' causes
-Characterized by a fierce independence, an iron will, and an unwavering loyalty to her allies, friends, and crewmates.
-She has a sharp tongue and a quick wit, and is unafraid to speak candidly to her superiors with a tendency to challenge authority and get into trouble.
-She exemplifies many of the personality traits that the Exo-Guard values in their soldiers, including a vicious and relentless combat instinct, but displays a somewhat uncharacteristic propensity for free thought (Is that thing really a threat? Is it REAALLY evil?)

We'll see how it plays out in game.

Backstory:

Carter is a middle-aged Human man who spend the first 8 years of his adult life working as a Forensic Accountant for AbadarCorp, finding financial discrepencie and reporting them up the chain.

Carter's magical talents did not manifest until his late 20's. One day he got into a minor accident and kicked his car and fire shot from his hands, draining the battery on his phone.

Luckily no one was injured.

Carter, however, was profoundly different. Heading home, he thought about what it meant that he could use magic.

That day, he resigned from his job to start working on using his abilities. After a near fire in his building, however, he decided to join the Starfinder Society, as their marketing indicated that they would provide training in a variety of topics, including magic.

He signed up the next day, one day after the so-called "Scoured Stars" incident. When he heard people talking about it, he started investigating on his own, in addition to his studies.

After having the computer that had his spell cache on it stolen, he decided to get a holographic tattoo implanted on his wrist that would serve as his spell cache, eventually planning to have it spiral around his arm as his knowledge grew.

Great to see that we've got the whole party worked out.

I was wondering if we'd have any humans on the team.

I'm not a super fan of wierd races. Humans are conflicted enough.

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

Demo Girl's looking great so far!

As for gear - anything level 1-2 is fine, and I'm an easy sell on most items level 3 (Absalom being quite the hub of trade after all).

A quick note on Yexov/Voxey, Expertise gives you an insight bonus to the chosen skills, so if you take Skill Synergy (also insight) you'll want to make sure the chosen skills don't overlap!

One of the big changes is like 99% of things that give bonuses to skills are insight now.

Okay - how's everyone feeling about their characters? Everyone looked like they were at 90%+ last I checked :-)
