As you arrive to the senate, from the commotion you can tell that Grand Prince Stavian has already initiated his purge!
You race through the Arcade of Triumphs and the courtyard, finding yourself in the entrance to the emperor's hall. Ahead, the entrances to the Senate Floor are shut- you could assume barred, and guarded by four guards at each!

Because these encounters roll into one another I rolled all the initiatives even for as to yet unarrived threats at once. The squares are 10 foot squares so each one effectively has four normal combat squares in them-- I know that's a bit wonky but I think it is better than trying to do separate maps for the smaller locations especially since there's nothing restricting your movement throughout. Everyone acts before the guards.
Juniper Berrythwaite |
"Petra, can you get us inside?" Juniper suggests.
I think Petra can only »BAMF« four of us in with dimension door, right?
Does anyone have another way in quickly? It looks like there is a back entrance, but it will take time for most of us to get around.
Ajax Arrowhawk |
Ajax pops his wand of Gravity Bow and enchants himself, stowing the wand back in his haversack.
"Are we sure all these men are willing to die? Perhaps some of them will stand down?"
"If anyone gets to close, Ara, take them down."
Juniper Berrythwaite |
Juniper refreshes shield from her wand.
"I can try talking to them, but that might take time. Maybe get the dimension door ready just in case," Juniper whispers to her friends.
As the group of Pathfinders move forward, the small halfling in sooty full-plate leads the way. "Hello, gentlemen.," she greets the guards with a warm, genuine, and gentle smile, "I am Juniper Berrtythwaite — of the Westcrown Berrythwaites — and my companions and I have been commissioned by several interested parties in the task of securing and protecting the senators and their sacred institution beyond those doors from those that would wish upon them harm to befall." She shows the guards the ID badge given to her by Laurisa Tromaine. "If you would be so kind as to open those doors for us, it would be greatly appreciated."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
I will spend a use of Adaptable Luck on that roll to boost it to 29

"As the lady says, we are here on official business to help you protect the Senate and all its people," says Kelvor, helpfully.

Petra Orlovsky |
As the party organizes themselves Petra lounges on a chair creating a small ball of fire in her fingers before flicking it up into the air and catching it in her hand.
Inspiration does strike as they near the senate building and she casts see invisibility on herself and Emberkin and uses her extend rod to extend a Haste on the whole party.18 rounds

"It is a little silly as you boys obviously have a handle on things here but you know how orders go."
She gives a cheeky wink to one of the guards.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (13) + 20 = 33
Emberkin Dracolepus |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Emberkin on the other hand is fluttering back and forth doing his best to make sure everything goes smoothly.
"Thank you for the use of the Wand Miss Berrtythwaite. I can certainly do that. It will aid you when Petra uses Liberating Command. Have you considered Talismans? I believe there is one which can act as per the Freedom of movement spell."
He nuzzles into Juniper's hand as she pats him and gives a happy little shiver. "That does make it hard to maintain ones dignity." His telepathic voice is more jovial than reproachful in Juniper's head.
"Ah Ajax, allow me." He easily activates the wand for Ara, Telepathically addressing her as he does.
Thank you for your service mighty one. I hope this will help keep you safe. Is there anything else you need? Since Ara has a language she can communicate with Emberkin telepathically. Go Faerie Dragons!

At the senate Emberkin hides behind Kelvor's bulk

Oxnard Kettlebeak |
The guards reply, "We are under strict orders under penalty of death direct from the Grand Prince- no one is to be admitted!" they set their halberds against a charge.
That brings up the next round essentially, but you get the feeling words will not serve you in this situation
Kelvor of the Shundar-Quah |
I guess it's gonna be the straightforward way, thinks Kelvor as he looks at the rest of the team.
Ajax Arrowhawk |
Ajax shakes his head in disappointment Ajax mutters to Juniper, "Thank you for trying to spare the lives of men."
In a much louder voice, "You poor dump fools have never seen Kelvor in action, have you?"
Ajax fire a round of arrows at the guard to his left

Juniper Berrythwaite |
If you don't mind, Juniper is going to act before Kelvor, in order to soak up attacks of opportunity.
Juniper takes a defensive posture, then walks forward and around to get a better position on the guards. "I really don't think you want to be doing this," she says to the group of men blocking her way.

Juniper's defenses are:

She gets +2 vs attacks of opportunity
Anyone who ends up adjacent to her gets a +4 bonus to AC.

In that case, Juniper can walk all the way up and down the phalanx of guards, provoking attacks of opportunity from all of them. lol.
Emberkin Dracolepus |
Emberkins voice enters the mind of the party
"It is rather dangerous for Petra to teleport us blindly and we do not know the layout of the senate on the otherside of that door."
Using his natural spell-like-abilities Emberkin casts Greater Invisibility and darts forward to open the door to the senate.

Ajax's arrows drop one guard, Ara springs forward and trips another.

Juniper moves, provoking from the remaining two:

The door opened, you can now see into the chamber-- a rush of people head towards the exit, and the entire senate flor is covered in madness- small fights between Stavian's men and some attendees exist here and there, but panic rages all around. The entire Senate floor is considered a crowd hazard taking two squares of movement for each 5 feet
As you look in, one woman's eyes lock on you and you can tell she is a serious threat Image on the next slide she and the two Bone Devils with her move to intercept your group.
Grel still had action in round 2, and then Ajax acts in round 3 before the Devils. setting up the slide now to add new figures- the crowd is not directly represented just as a hazard rule

Ummm...if she's surrounded by Mirror Images, then I will direct my attacks at the Bone devil. 1 out of 7 odds is too low for a direct attack. Subtract 2 damage from each arrow and lower accuracy by 2. Also, that last arrow would then be a pheromone arrow, not a thistle.
And..probably good to ask at the start...is there a level adjustment that has to be made? :)

Sounds right. And just so everyone is clear, I would have targeted the one high one the map, closer to Kelvor.
Kelvor of the Shundar-Quah |
Kelvor says over his shoulder, quietly but enough that Juniper can hear, "Can you distract these guys? I'm going for the woman."
Kelvor LEAPS over the prone guard, ducks under Ara, and runs straight to the woman!
Not technically a jump, since he's prone. And not really a "run" since he's got 70ft of movement. More like a stroll up to her and swing!

I was going to snipe her casting, but with Mirror Image, up, the scenario has totally neutralized that tactic. I figured I'd just help clear out the Devils for now. If you want me to burn up the images, I can do that as well. Just let me know...I'm easy...but I'm not cheap.

With Karina no longer visible, Ajax returns his attention to the bone devils.
