Surprised, and not happy about it, Kuntaxl reacted aggressively. The frill behind his head snapped open as he quickly closed with the hobgoblin, while readying his shield.

LOL I guess a druid wouldn't be overly impressed with an animal like display

Conscious of reports of hobgoblin raiders in the area, his eyes dart to the trees, looking for an ambush.

"Who are you?! Where are the rest?"

Jace starts yelling out the back of the caravan.

"What's going on!? I don't see anything! I think maybe something is going on at the front of the caravan! Can anyone see??"

In the midst of this tense situation, a call comes from the front of the wagons. Up ahead is Plaguestone! No sooner does the call fade from Keldaran's lips than it is overshadowed by a series of long mournful howls, emanating from the woods to either side of the caravan. Moments later, you hear cries of panic as a pack of mangy wolves descends from the forest with teeth bared!

Map link posted above! You should be able to edit, but please let me know if you have any issues. Since we have a pretty active group here, please everyone roll your own initiative, using perception in most cases, unless you specified something else in your exploration. Bart and the others of the caravan are towards the front of the wagons, but Cooky is here, huddled down behind a pot near Tolgy.

And, yes Aurumvorak...had to be wolves;)

Jace Strides (1 action) to the other side of the wagon now, closest to where Kuntaxl and the newcomer are. "Who's that?" He indicates the individual who came out of nowhere.

"Hey, who's that!?" Jace points at the wolf fifteen feet behind the newcomer. "Ooh, I think maybe it's fiddling time..."

Jace retrieves his fiddle from where he left it on the wagon floor, and begins to sing as he plays a traditional fiddler's tune, casting Inspire Courage through his sung lyrics and the playing his fiddle. (2 actions)

Vorak stares at the lizardfolk’s frill, concerned that he might be aggressive. When the wolves howl, Vorak does the cagiest double-take anyone has seen this side of two weeks, and even ducks a little.

Fyxe! Where’s Flenser?

Vorak slides down any available slope toward the wagon, looking around to try to tell what in any Hell is going on... Unfortunately, between the waggoneers snd the wolves, Vorak thinks it’s all chaos.

”Friend! Friend! They’re not my wolves!!!” he shouts to Kuntaxl...

He lips the cup to his lips for a taste, the other hand waving into existence an oval of force through which the halfling can see fine, but from the opposite side renders Tolgy blurred and distorted.

Kuntaxl rushes forward and leans down to bite the very surprised wolf. The lizard man wraps mighty jaws around its neck, lifts it up nearly off the ground, and shakes it about. He then drops the mangy creature to the ground, where it lay still.

That's actually a crit, as your attack exceeds the AC by 10 or more. I figured double damage, but let me know if there are any other effects for a critical from your bite. Either way, the wolf is done for!

Tolgy, I think it's one action to get down off of the wagon, but you can still do that, and then fire off the divine lance. You just can't get your shield in.

Tolgy's lance of light flies out and pierces through the wolf just coming out of the woods. It singes the fur and burns into the beast's side, but it's still standing...barely.

The wolves move in! The hurt one to the north rushes at Kuntaxl, snarling with flecks of drool flying off of it. It bites at the lizard man, but doesn't even come close.

Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Bite 2: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 6 - 4 = 9

The third wolf rushes at Tolgy, chomping to try and get a piece. Its first bite takes out a chunk of flesh, but the second is thrown off target.

Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Bite 2: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 6 - 4 = 13

Stepping around the horse, Nuktik eyes the beast. "I don't believe singing will keep it from eating you." announces the hobgoblin.

"It might like my singing, and keep me alive for the entertainment value," Jace says, sounding a bit miffed.

Jace's song sounds out over the snarls of the canine beasts, though they don't seem to enjoy it nearly as much as Jace's allies do. Still, one could think their snarls were instead snorts of appreciation.

Nuktik's throw is spot on, and his bomb hits the wolf solidly. The acrid smell of singed fur nearly makes Tolgy choke.

Nice! That one's still up, as is the one by Kuntaxl.

I’m last in initiative, and after Jace used inspire courage, and Nuktik threw alchemical fire, you acted again. Thus I missed my turn. Somewhere. I think.

Hold up guys; let me summarize then we'll be good.

Aurumvorak moves in, holding his shield high and at the ready.

End of round 1, beginning of round 2

After he moves into position, another snarl can be heard from the north, ushering in a new, much larger beast. This wolf is robust, its forelegs rippling with muscle. Green ichor drips down from it's snarling jaws.

Initiative perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

The creature looks to the south at the gathered defenders of the caravan and it's life-giving meat, and it lets out a howl. After a second, the howl is echoed by the other wolves, who pay homage to their alpha.

Intimidate to demoralize: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

So, mechanically, that goes against the Will DC of everyone within 30 feet of the big bad wolf. So, that's everyone but Nuktik. However, that doesn't hit anyone's will DC, so you're all good. The other wolves are allowed to echo that howl as a reaction, but their check is at a -4, so though it would hit Nuktik at that point, a 9 doesn't meet his will DC. So, no one is frightened!

Kuntaxl moves in to bite at the next wolf, but can't seem to get the dodging canine.

HP 9/15 | AC 14 | F+4 R+4 W+9 | Perc +7 | Focus Points 1/1 Hero Points 1/1 | Font 2/4

Tolgy scratches at his neck and head, staggering backward. "Be gone, foul beasties!" he slurs, "the power of Cayden compels you!" His beer-vision shield surrounds him, rendering him slightly blurry and twice as attractive.

Step, move to cast off the fleas, shield spell (AC 15).

Moved Tolgy on the map.

The wolves pause, seeming to glance back at their alpha to see if it knew what Tolgy had yelled, but with no deviation in commands coming, they attack!

The first rushes at Kuntaxl, biting at the lizard man's legs. The first bite comes in under his shield, just barely scratching Kuntaxl's hip.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Attack2: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 6 - 4 = 4
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

DC14 fort save or you're sickened with fleas for one minute! 2 damage to Kuntaxl.

The other rushes at Nuktik, not wanting the hobgoblin to feel lonely. It falls upon Nuktik with fury, ripping with its teeth as its friendly fleas try and find a new home.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Attack2: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 6 - 4 = 20

"Mangy mutts, get outta here! Go home to momma!"

Jace pauses fiddling to yell at the wolves. He points his fiddler's bow at Kuntaxl and intones a poem strongly, almost singing the words, in a voice that commands the powers that be to listen:

Kuntaxl ... you've got a friend in me /
Yes, you've got a friend in me /
If you've got troubles, I've got 'em too /
There are few things I wouldn't do for you /
Let's stick together, see this wolf mess through /

Jace casts spirit link on Kuntaxl. (2 actions)
Kuntaxl immediately heals 2 hit points of damage, and Jace takes 2 damage. At the start of each of Jace's turns, this will happen again if Kuntaxl is damaged.

Jace begins to play his fiddle after that, and gives the entire group inspire courage once more. (1 action)

For 1 round, "You and all allies in the area gain a +1 status bonus to attack rolls, damage rolls, and saves against fear effects."

With the background of Jace's song, Nuktuk shows his hobgoblin grit. He turns, tosses his lunch, then slams his gauntlet down upon the burning wolf. A puff of smoke is "thumped" out and floats in the air as the wolf goes down, it's spike cracked.

Wolf dead! Aurumvorak is up!

@GM: I found where my confusion lay - Jace used an action to stride in his initiative post so I thought that was Round 1, where I then posted that I moved to the side of the wagon, making my Perception roll for initiative, and as Jace posted an action I did too. Because at the start of all of this I was round about where I am now...and asked for folks to move me...Then later, you posted HERE that Nuktik, Jace and I were up. But then I didn’t get to post a turn, and Kuntaxl started Round 2, where I thought I had missed my Round 2.

So the post I made as my Round 2 actions, was actually Round 1. But what actually happened? I posted that I dropped my shield, moved and attacked with longspear as my Round 2 post - is that all nullified? Regardless of the fact that apparently it takes an action to drop a raised shield, how would you like me to proceed? If I have only acted once, how did I get from where I am nowish, to the side of the wagon and back again? And what am I holding, because tactically I wouldn’t be out of adjacent range with a morningstar and shield, but I would be if I’m shieldless and wielding longspear.

Sorry for the mixed up posts, but as you can see I’ve been thrown for a loop.

And which wolf is the alpha - the one that looks different that Kuntaxl is fighting?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

No worries! We'll sort it out. Here's my take on it:

Round one - you took a stride action and then raised your shield...and panicked;)

Round two - if we take the above into account, you'd do this: Move to just south of the northern X'd out wolf, drop your shield, and attack. Would you be attacking the little wolf who just bit Kuntaxl's shield, or the big bad which is, as you noted, the one that looks different, to the north of where you'd be. You'd have to get one more space to the left to attack the one by Kuntaxl, but you'd be setting yourself up for a doggie-flank. See the map - I indicated where I think you'd currently be.

Heheh, I totally thought this too, and just assumed it was thematic flavor. Plus, it was realistic for the character's rather sudden appearance just seconds before a wolf pack attacked.

Hearing the whimper as the wolf attacking Nuktik falls, Kuntaxl glances back and sees that the caravan is safe.

Eyeing the large wolf that entered the fray, he hisses, knowing the leader is the key to breaking the morale of the lesser beasts.

"Rally to me, friends. Finish off this little one."

Running forward, he flares his frill as he leans down and roars back at the Alpha wolf, finishing up by lunging at the beast's flank.

Demoralize: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 (Frightened 2, if successful)

Retributive Strike (if applicable)

Aurumvorak moves up to the beast bravely, perhaps desiring to show these apparently capable folk what he can do. However, he swings at this massive wolf twice, and misses both times as the hardy beast just seems far too quick for its size.

The wolf acts before Kuntaxl, so has only one option of whom to attack - Aurumvorak. I think that means that the retributive strike wouldn't work, though.

The wolf snarls at Aurumvorak, and attacks with dripping, green jaws. He snaps the jaws around Aurumvorak's midsection, and the green ichor begins to eat away at the hobgoblin's armor. Still, the great wolf pulls his meal down to the ground, and knocks him prone.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
crit damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 6) + 4 = 16
Additional acid damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Sorry! This guy is nasty! That takes Aurumvorak to Dying1 and 0 HP, unless you have a resistance I don't know about. You can try a DC11 recovery check on your turn; that makes you wounded 1, but I think you're still unconcious. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The wolf then, having taken down its first foe, chokes, then vomits a stream of green acid in a line, coating Tolgy and Jace with sizzling splatter.

Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 6) = 13

DC16 basic reflex save for half!

DC16 basic reflex save for half!

Reflex Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

"Eww, gross!" Jace takes full vomit.

Jace is at 5 hit points.

I used my reaction for a Shield Block, so you are correct. Retributive Strike would allow me to block some damage as long as both the ally and the enemy are within 15ft. The attack only applies if I am adjacent. Additionally, I have the Ranged Reprisal feat which allows me to get the attack with a ranged weapon as well as allowing me to take a Step in order to get the enemy in reach of a Melee reprisal

"B*$*&!%s..." Tolgy mumbles, turning a bit green under the gills.

He splashes the contents of his cup toward Aurumvorak, and as the seemingly endless drink flies fifteen feet to reach him, the liquid explodes in a flash of warm light over the hobgoblin's head.

heal @ Aurumvorak: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Tolgy then staggers behind the wagon wheel, taking cover from further wolf vomit.

2 actions for ranged heal, 1 to stride.

Stepping over the fallen wolf, Nuktik eyes the remaining two. Mixing together another concoction as he struggles to hold back the bile building up, he calls out "Duck!" and chucks it at the alpha.

Electric Bomb vs alpha: 1d20 + 6 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 - 1 + 1 = 23 for Electric: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 1 = 7
On a successful hit the target is also flatfooted until my next turn

Waiting for the minion wolf's turn before I decide what I need to do.

Kuntaxl strides in, hissing at the wolf, but the creature doesn't seem willing to back down. The lizard man has no problem with that, and leans down to bite at the creature, taking out a chunk of fur. The lupine beast yelps in pain, and then snarls with green goo dripping from its jaws.

After Tolgy stumbles in to heal Aurumvorak, the smaller wolf looks up at Kuntaxl and, seeing an opportunity for a pack hunting technique they like to use, tries to hamstring the lizard man.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Attack 2: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 6 - 4 = 11
Attack 3: 1d20 + 6 - 8 ⇒ (9) + 6 - 8 = 7

The larger wolf snarls in derision at his obviously useless pack mate, then yelps again as an electrically charged bomb crashes down on its snout.

Awoooooooooo!

The howl is one of pain, not a threat, and the wolf seems confused by the powerful attack from Nuktik.

Flat footed, so AC 16
