At the dawn of time, a war between gods and titans left the landscape of Thylea forever changed. Thousands of years later, the first mortals arrived, carried by ship and dragon.

The Dragonlords were the champions who overthrew the Titans 500 years ago and forged the "Oath of Peace". But the Oath has waned, and now the Titans seek vengeance.

You are one of the heroes called by prophecy to end the conflict once and for all. POets will sing of your deeds for centuries to come... if you survive.

Okay. It's been a while since I tried to run a game on here, but a combination of the current social status of us all, and the excitement of this type of game has pushed me to try again.

I'm looking for 5 (Maybe 6) Stalwart adventurers to step outside the bonds of mortality and become true heroes. With the coming release from Wizards and the release of this adventure, the time is right to begin.

This will not be first come, first served, and I'll keep applications open for at least a week, but this game will rely on a firm investment from the characters. You will have to get the "Free" Players guide pdf, and be prepared for the hero to be the focus of the adventure, not the setting, or protagonist as many adventures require. You have a destiny to fulfill, and above all that will be your characters goal. The adventure should take you from 1st to about 15th level, but even from the beginnning you will be a cut above the normal residents of Thylea.

I'm interested in concepts at this time only, so go ahead and download the players guide and come up with your best epic hero. I will accept (2) Thylea only characters, (2-3) Normal 5E race characters, and possibly (1-2) Far traveler character from another setting that winds up here called by fate.

And.... GO!

NOTE: Future communication will be using my "Supreme Being" Avatar, which is my GM Avatar.

dotting so I can find this. Odyssey of the Dragonlords is a great setting

Love Greek mythology, and I've been looking to get more into 5e. I'm mighty interested.

I'm thinking of making a warlock, more specifically a sailor with the Kraken patron.

Sounds way cool, going to download the guide and start thinking.

edit: ...and wow the artwork is incredible in that document.

Contributor

I have an idea for a Thylean demigod that will likely be human or half-elf.

BUUUT...

As far as races, are we limiting to the core rulebook and player's guide, or are the other Odyssey of the Dragonlords races fair game (Minotaurs, Medusa, Nymph, Siren) That might change my initial thoughts

Just to clarify my original post. I will allow up to (2) Characters from the OOTD Setting. The ones you mentioned are in the Players guide to Odyssey so they are available, but I'm limiting it to two of the Characters in this campaign.

I just feel that a whole party of Satyrs, Medusas, Centaurs etc running around trying to be the heroes would detract from the feeling of the game.

Contributor

Ok, that makes sense. For some reason, my copy of the player's guide only has Centaur and Satyrs, but the campaign book had the rest. weird.

That is weird. My player's guide has them all

There's a 2 chapter preview version and a 7 chapter full version released later it looks like. :)

Contributor

that makes more sense, I just assumed I was losing what's left of my marbles

Leaning towards an Odyssean inspired by the myth of Autolycus.

Okay, so I am interested in this game as well. I am reading through the player's guide now, but I am currently thinking that I want to play an archer with the DRagonslayer path.

I'll have a look at the guide and then tell you, though I have been toying with playing a wizard for some time.

I'll tentatively dot this and look through the player's guide. I adore 5E and a greek-inspired campaign sounds neat!

So I definitely have a Sinbad-kind of vibe going on mentally at the moment. I am thinking of being a Sailor-Fighter with The Vanished One as my path. I'll tinker on a backstory once I re-read everything again tomorrow.

Since these are heroic figures, there is a chance to have truly heroic beginnings... or overcome great odds. For character generation I'm going to use Point Buy with a twist. You can choose to use the standard 27-Point buy, or... take a chance with the fates and roll 8d8 to see how many points you start out with. You must make your choice and stick with it.

8d8 ⇒ (1, 8, 6, 8, 2, 5, 3, 6) = 39

It this example there was a slight bonus to starting character points.

I'm in for that.

I've been skimming through the book and liked what I've seen so far. Wizard will be, and The Doomed One seems fitting. I really like The Lost One, since it was actually my first idea, but I see that having to find a way back home can be a big detriment to the focus the character has on the actual campaign aim.

To avoid cheating through the Preview feature, I'll ask you to please roll the 8d8 for me, and I'll stick to it.

Also, for a Wizard: we don't need to belong to the archetype brought in the book, do we?

I always trust the Players until I have reasons not to. Feel free to roll your own dice. If you roll you're stuck with that or... choose 27 point buy now. Feel free to use any of the WOTC wizard published archetypes (Not UA stuff). We'll just have to figure out where / why you didn't attend the academy. Not a big thing. Were you thinking Human? If a monstrous race we just have to determine which Titan was your ancestor, instead of which Dragonlord.

Interested. Thinking of a young native shepherd boy or girl for now.

Tempting Fate: 8d8 ⇒ (4, 8, 5, 1, 8, 7, 6, 1) = 40

I might have created a monster with this method of Point buy... but you're all heroic after all. I'll probably cap starting abilities at 18 after racial adjustments. The extended point buy is as follows:

8 = 0
9 = 1
10 = 2
11 = 3
12 = 4
13 = 5
14 = 7
15 = 9
16 = 11
17 = 13
18 = 15

Do you mean that the 8d8 gives you the point-buy directly? If so, then yes, that's a nice bump.

Dreaming Warforged wrote:

That was my thought... though it might produced some very imbalanced characters... so I'm rethinking. The average value of this method should be around 36... which is quite a bump. Might have to change it to 8d6 which should put the average around 28 which is only slightly more than standard Point buy.

I copied this method off someone eases campaign, without rolling the dice odds, but after checking I believe either 27 Point buy or 8d6 for points might be better and compress the difference a bit.

8d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 6, 1, 1, 6, 1) = 26 Method 2
8d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 3, 1, 6, 2, 2) = 232
8d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 5, 5, 1, 4, 4, 2) = 253
8d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 1, 5, 3, 6, 4) = 254
8d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 1, 3, 3, 2, 2, 4) = 225
8d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 6, 3, 2, 4, 1) = 276

Dice Odds

Thanks for the clarification. I guess you could introduce more variability by going 6d8 instead of 8d6, but the expected value remains 27, so you're as likely to see a bump as to see a drop.

A sure way to give a bump is to go with 30 points. That's more direct, but there is no variability anymore.

Perhaps a constant value plus a variable value might be what you're looking for? For example 16+3d8? The expectation for this is 29.5, or 16+4d6?

Just throwing ideas around.

It's totally worth tempting fate here.

My concept is a human fighter (hoplite). A world weary soldier that would rather be done with the fighting and politics. Kindof based on Hector, in my head. But he's a demi-god. So he knows, his journey is far from over. After all my thinking about the races, I went with human...sigh.

Cassios, Son of Pythor
Human Fighter (Hoplite), Veteran Warrior of Mytros
Demi-God Epic Path

Fate: 8d8 ⇒ (1, 8, 4, 2, 5, 2, 2, 1) = 25

Fate: 8d8 ⇒ (3, 5, 7, 1, 6, 4, 7, 8) = 41

Wow! Those are gonna be some damn fine stats!

EVERYBODY!!!

Hold up on the stats rolls. I'm rethinking, as the bell curve is not to my liking with the 8d8 method. I'll advise revised method this afternoon.
One PC with 25 and one with 41 is just too unbalanced.

Contributor

Haha, as you wish, O Deific One.

I was writing my last post and hadn't noticed your update

That's fair.

The basics:

An elf wizard. Due to his inherent bad luck he's not able to attend the academy (I need more detail on that, but basically I just wanted him to have a somewhat "side dish" education) so he had to learn with an old hermit/private master paid with his family riches/ancient book he found somewhere. I'll pick any ordinary archetype (Abjurer, probably), or maybe he was able to grasp some of the Academe teachings from somewhere else.

Alright, I know I was originally thinking of a explorer from the other world but the Odyssean archetype for rogues just sounds too cool to ignore. I have the fluff already built in mind. I have no idea how long the fluff will be so I'm putting it into a spoiler...

Mateo Nikas, the Doomed Odyssean:
The noble family of Nikas was well known within the great city of Mystros; a long lineage of heroes from the earliest days when the Oath of Peace was still new. Mateo should have been another welcomed addition to their number, a bright son to continue their story. Yet with his birth, a great darkness came to the land.

The bright and shining moon was covered by strange shadows and Sydon's wrath was incredible the evening Mateo was born. Ships were laid to rest in the depths of the bay while the neighbors of the Nikas family were plagued with night terrors. His own mother, a priestess of Vallus, died quietly holding onto the newborn child. His father was murdered on his way home to greet his sun, stabbed over a dozen times in his back.

With such dark signs, it was believed that the child was cursed and truly, ill luck followed him. Whenever a prized animal passed away, Mateo was there the day before. Whenever someone suffered, it was for showing the young boy kindness. In time, Mateo was ostracized even by his own family and only the oaths kept him safe and from being drowned in the ocean to be rid of him.

Mateo, in turn, grew to not rely on luck but on his own cunning. His loneliness was covered by a devil-may-care attitude and a roguish personality. As soon as they were able to be rid of him though, his family cast him out to find his own worth in the world. With little money, no friends, and an evil wind at his back, Mateo went to the place that would accept anyone with an ounce of courage; the Centurions.

It was in the military that he found his home; his ill luck seemed to focus on his enemies rather than his comrades. He learned to study his foes for their weaknesses, where to plant a blade to make it hurt the most. It was where he learned how to be a scout to survey the area, to disarm traps that would take the lives of his allies. Yet even though he had found a place that had somewhat accepted him, he could still feel the dark and evil eye of his destiny lingering on him. His fate would catch up with him one day, claiming his life in an ugly fashion. It was destiny and it could not be avoided.

With the Oath of Peace soon to end, Mateo expected that his death was certainly coming. He was surprisingly summoned to the Oracle. It was rumored that the doom that he faced was tied to the doom their entire world would face. It was with her that there was a chance of salvation, a chance to escape the cruel chains of fate. So with his shield and spear on his back, his kopis on his side, Mateo goes to try and change his destiny and the world.

Mateo will be definitely taking the "Soldier" background to represent his training with the Centurions and will take Odyssean as soon as he hits third level.

@Doctor Momo - I know you were thinking of going Hoplite Fighter and a fellow soldier? Perhaps our character are war buddies? I can definitely see a demigod not being afraid of a cursed man and Mateo would probably be one of the few who treats your character as an average person, sarcasm and all. That and we'll be shield buddies!

I love this idea

Mmh... I'll try another concept then, I don't feel like repeating paths.

Okay all. Keep the ideas coming. I've decided on the following for generating stats. Should keep things fairly balanced, with a range of 24 to 32.

20 + 4d4

4d4 + 20 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 3) + 20 = 34 1

4d4 + 20 ⇒ (4, 2, 1, 1) + 20 = 28 2

4d4 + 20 ⇒ (3, 1, 3, 3) + 20 = 30 3

4d4 + 20 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 4) + 20 = 30 4

Or... you still have the option of playing it safe and taking the 27 point standard.

Jereru wrote:

Have you considered the Lost One Epic Path? You could be from some other setting, which would also explain your wizardly training not being from the Academy... Just a thought.

20 + 4d4 ⇒ 20 + (3, 3, 1, 2) = 29

Statz: 20 + 4d4 ⇒ 20 + (4, 2, 3, 1) = 30

So, the usual way you can't buy any stat higher than 15 (before mods). Still doing that?

I think I'll allow you to spend as you like... just no starting stats above 18 AFTER Racial Adjustments.

Contributor

I'm going Soldier for background as well.

I need to think of a better name than Cassios. It seems a bit mundane for a demi-god. His mother would have likely given him a more exciting nomen.

Winds of Fate: 20 + 4d4 ⇒ 20 + (2, 3, 3, 3) = 31

RACE: Wood elf
CLASS: Monk
Epic Path: Vanished One
Background: Soldier

Winds of Fate: 20 + 4d4 ⇒ 20 + (3, 4, 2, 2) = 31

Wow. This setting looks awesome! Mashup of Dragonlance, 300 and Wrath of Righteous. A couple of my concepts have already been claimed, so I would still be very interested to revise one of my favorite heroes: Captain America. I played Steave Rojerz, Captain Andoran, in Wrath of the Righteous. A paladin / brawling shield master.

Now, the Monk archetype is ready to go!

EDIT =============== EDIT ================= EDIT

I see lots of non-Thylean races, I would also propose this concept:

RACE: Centaur
CLASS: Barbarian (Bear or Zealot)
Epic Path: Haunted One
Background: Outlander

Wild Mage sorcerer with Cursed One path sounding about right at the moment. I'd be down to try a Siren or Satyr if possible, otherwise human. Descendant of the gods background.

I'm not totally keen on the whole "looking to go back" thing for the Lost One, but yeah, it was among the ones I had in mind.

Jereru wrote:

Maybe you don’t want to go back for some reason...

I surely don't want to go back! I wanna save the world!

But the whole path concept is to find a way back. And then when you find it... We'll see. I need to sleep on it.

Meanwhile, let the Moirai device my fate...

20 + 4d4 ⇒ 20 + (3, 4, 1, 4) = 32

Dem Stats Yo!: 4d4 + 20 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 2) + 20 = 32

Tempting Fate: 20 + 4d4 ⇒ 20 + (2, 2, 4, 2) = 30

Well, not quite as mighty as the 41 I had before, but could be worse.

The Exchange

Still working on crunch but here's my idea for the curse, hope you like it:

Novyn's Curse:

Long ago, before the appearance of the Five Gods, there was a great betrayal. A betrayal of love, a betrayal of loyalty...one so perverse in nature it had the power to alter the lineage of all who came after.

Neofytos was a pewter smith when the First War began, comfortable in Estoria with his trade -- talented even...but lonely. He had apprenticed here at a young age, leaving his family far behind in Mytos...and it happened that his toil left him friendless and inexperienced with the fairer sex.

That changed with Niki.

The two fell in love instantly and couldn't be separated both physically and emotionally. Neofytos had cast a special ring in the shape of a figure 8, the symbol mathematical philosophers used for infinity. When they were together, one would slip their finger in the bottom loop, while the other nestled on top.

But one day the Gygan cyclopes sacked Estoria, stealing Niki and other Estorians away to a foul cavern in the Greater Steppes. Forces were bravely mobilized to rescue, among them the mighty shieldman Serafeim...

Serafeim returned months later wearing the ring...Niki returned with child.

Rage and confusion assailed Neofytos, boiling over into vengeful wrath. In his most desperate and lowly hour, a Gygan spy in the form of a siamese cat visited the smith, gifting him a magical chisel. Just one tap on Serafeim's shield, the trickster claimed, and the Gygan's club would sunder the man leading Estoria's defenses.

So it was Neofytos had his vengeance, at the cost of Estoria falling to the cyclopian horde. He lost his life without ever seeing Niki again. But Kyria, who was just beginning to manifest, watched this play out with disdain. The goddess cursed the soul of Neofytos and his lineage, to 'always remain ignorant of love, but wise of betrayal'.

The babe survived, and unknown to the pewter smith, was his own blood...now branded with the mark of the curse: a chisel on the left arm, and an infinity symbol on the right. Wise women retold the story from time to time...and learned to fear the mark.

...

Over the years the line of Neofytos endured through lust, one bastard and one lustful mistake after the next. Never a child of love. The curse lives on in Novyn, manifesting itself in strange powers that are as likely to betray her as to help. Thus when the Oracle Versi's prophecy called her to be a keystone in her visions, it was with some hesitation the sorcerer answered...

Still working on backstory, but here's my crunchy goodness:

Name: Aristeides Xiphias
Race: High Elf
Class: Wizard
Epic Path: The Gifted One
Background: Sage

Backstory:

In Estoria, everyone’s expected to be able to defend him or herself. Aristeides has always been an oddity.

Born in a wealthy family of merchants, Aristeides always had what he needed, be it guardsmen to accompany him, books, food... everything. His family, the Xiphias, were leather merchants in the rural area around the city of Estoria, and earned vast amounts of money by buying materials for a few coins, making valuable items and selling them to local armies and militiae.

From a young age, Aristeides dreamt of attending the Academy. He had studied numerous books at home, books with stories about ancient battles between Dragons and Centaurs, about Giants, and about people who could do amazing wonders by just waving a hand. As a young teenager, all his dreams were of magic, people who rode Dragons and, of course, about girls. One of those things he had access to, the other two were just myth.

His parents, thinking that a magician in the family would be a quite valuable asset, pulled some strings and emptied some purses. They managed to get their child a special scholarship for foreign students at the Academy. Aristeides was young and a day-dreamer, but he managed alright on his first term. He used his holidays to go back home for visit, but all he found was a burnt state and the labourers in rebellion.

In peril though totally in shock, unable to react, he saved his life only thanks to some ex-workers, still loyal to the kind kid they had seen grow up. He fled to the only place he knew apart from his home: the Academy. Sadly, without his parents to provide, the doors of the prestigious institution remained closed for him.

Without further monetary support, Aristeides had to search for a way of living. Thankfully, he had an academic education, even if not fully complete, so he found employment as some noble’s scribe. Months passed, even a year, and Aristeides still dreamt of learning more spells, magic wonders, and becoming a powerful Dragonlord known all across the land.

Recently, Aristeides accompanied his employer on a visit to the famed Oracle. He was there to write down all what the Oracle had to say for his Lord, but no one expected that the Oracle had words specifically directed at him. The Oracle, turning her head at him, spoke with a soft voice. ”And to you, young dreamer, keep on dreaming but remember this: If you want to find the King, look for his throne, his crown and his sceptre.”

scranford, just a thought but how would you feel about aasimar and/or genasi in this setting for a bit of a 'touch of the gods' feel?
