Once everyone stumbles around from behind the altar into the pillared hall, Aithaloessa gapes at the inscriptions again. Being ever so slightly high makes them, if anything, that much more fascinating, and she strolls through the pillars, albeit a bit too aimlessly to really get anything out of them yet. She lingers by one or two for a bit longer than the others, and at one point, frustrated by not deciphering what’s going on, starts beating her own head with the butt of her pistol and muttering, “Stupid, stupid, useless girl!” Confusion: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

That’s about the worst of it, though, and after a minute or two, she blinks and comes back to herself, somewhat unclear where the bump on her forehead came from. (If I figured out the odds correctly, I think assuming average rolls and given Aith’s concentration bonus that it would pan out like that. If you’d like, I could roll for the whole minute I guess, but that sounds a bit lawful. :) )

“Right,” she groans. “Who would have expected that from Nethysians? I shudder to think what that Osiriani inscription back there reads. It had better not be something about something much better than pesh.”

Gingerly assessing her bruise, Aithaloessa does perk up a bit now that her head’s clear and the ruins seem quiet again.

“While we make sure that whatever that was has quite worn off, do you think we have time…?” she asks, eyes almost ready to widen pleadingly. She barely waits for an answer, her odd floating gem zooming after her to orbit her head as she tilts it up again to examine the pillars properly this time. Spellcraft (DC 21): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16

Or can she take 10 since we've secured the area? Otherwise, I guess Antarah and Yasmeena will have to save the day, because a magical puzzle is something Aith would pretty much have to be dragged away from. At least she'd go quietly. :)

Adding to Aithaloessa’s distractions, Haleen’s question drags a niggling detail up from the back of her mind, and her brow furrows as she thinks back.

“That fog really isn’t helping now, because normally I’d be much better at counting my shots, but,” the guardswoman unwrinkles her brow, “I couldn’t swear to it without going back in and concentrating on how it feels when no-one’s trying to kill us, but it rather felt as if the magic … came easier?”

“Back when this place was still active and there were priests around to guide people through it, I can see how it would have been a useful sort of space. I have no idea about the boat, though.”

“Although, speaking of useful, should we stay until we sort through these pillars? I wouldn’t blame anyone for not being as enthusiastic, but this is amazing!”

I'm guessing we can't take 10 on these Spellcraft checks, in the end? Leaving it to the luck of the dice and Aith's stubbornness.

As every caster knows, concentration is important to use magic. And the better you get at casting, the better you get at concentrating.
As the mist - called Breath of Nethys - needs concentration to not be confused, one highly proficient with magic will suffer no ill effects. Unworthy non-magic-users will not have any benefit and smash their own head in.

The problem with meal-replacement berries, Aithaloessa decides, as she takes her break for the midday meal and watches the others have fun snake-handling, is that one can’t actually linger over lunch and enjoy it.

“Could we disarm it?” she asks innocently, not meaning to be unhelpfully obvious, but building up to, “Short of reducing the altar to slag?”

There’s a beat in which she realizes that the bit of Dwarven slang could be misconstrued, coming from her, and her eyes flicker to Tariq in particular as she considers, “I’m sure there’s a spell that would let us get rid of it, maybe by turning it into mud or something.”

She doesn’t want to give anyone the impression that her only way of imagining remodeling a temple is by the application of an improbable amount of fire, after all. Mind, I’m not sure melting an altar by any means, fire or otherwise, is really going to be taken all that well. I think at this point Aith might as well resign herself to the soubriquet “the Profane,” at least in the religious chronicles of Katapesh.

“Perhaps, though we’ve already borrowed you, and I wonder how many priests we could sneak away from Kelmarane before Garavel complains,” Aithaloessa muses, before turning to the pillars again with an obsessive gleam in her eyes. “Just a bit longer…”

This is madness!:
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24 Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24 Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
Madness? This is magecraaaaft! ;)

OK, Aith will come quietly whenever you folks get bored and decide to drag her away, if you don't feel like waiting a whole other six hours, by which time even she will feel it's time to go home for the day, but if we can do at least three, Aith will have figured out another two pillars. :)

Haleen has the altar to play whack a snake. After a while she considers if taking another whiff of the mist, but decides that she can beat herself without that, if it has to be.

After staying at the Nethys temple for the whole day and the night finally Aithaloessa and Antarah have managed to decipher all the columns, and transfer them into at least one spellbook.

They also managed to bore all those who can't engage in this activity to death.

Yasmeena has a theory that the man Antarah decapitated was the cat they were chasing, and she explains this idea to him when he mentions looking for it. "He was a lycanthrope, a person who often unwittingly changes into an animal in certain circumstances. It is unfortunate we had to kill him, but we had no way of removing the curse."

She spends the time writing a new song about the battle and the wonders of the temple to Nethys, describing her friends in heroic and positive terms.

Aithaloessa feels a bit guilty about it, but working through the night on a bundle of new magic gives her the sort of buzz she’s sure peshheads can only imagine. The morning sees her still bright- (if a bit wild-) eyed, though her hair is uncharacteristically beginning to frizz with the very nearly literal static tension of the night’s work. Now, she’s almost buzzing, ready to release it.

“I am sorry,” she tells the others, heartfully, her tone clashing peculiarly with her unworldly smile, “You really needn’t have stayed. Let me make it up to you with a proper breakfast, at least. No beaker tea in the lab, or mere Goodberry Surprise, and not roast spider-leg.” (She does make a note to work on her humour, given the disastrous effect of her attempt last night, so that the other knights don’t think she’s being serious next time. Maybe it’s a mage thing?) Probably an Aith thing. Occupational hazard of being stark mad. :)

After she gathers her notes on the spell lore from the pillars, she does pause on the way out of the temple to collect the venom and silk lands from the dead spiders on the surface level for Undrella, grateful that the laboratory below had enough empty vessels left from who knows how long ago that she needn’t worry about finding something else to contain the fleshy prize to carry back to Kelmarane.

All things considered, Aithaloessa’s quite pleased: dangerous animals scattered, spells deciphered, and no arson or gross property damage necessary.
Back to town then? See where the conquering heroes come, as the saying goes? :)

Healing up and recovering spell slots!

Antarah looks blankly at Yasmeena after her explanation of what the cat might be. It takes him a while, but he eventually understands it and says "That's.... disturbing... It was a person after all?" He is suddenly sorry that they didn't try to talk to him more, but it was... very confusing in there. In response to Aithaloessa, he says "Father Zastoran probably wouldn't appreciate we destroying that altar."

The next day he says "Well, before we go back to town, we should take care of the spider problem. Remember, they skittered away."

"I would have brought a thick soft blanket if I had known we'd stay overnight. But I slept in worse places." Haleen replies with a shrug to Aithaloessa.

On Antarah's reminder she sighs. "Remind me to buy a bow when we're back in Kelmarane."

Antarah says rather seriously "I should have learned how to make bows." to Haleen, perhaps more seriously than he should. He suggests "So, let's get back up there?"

“Do let’s,” Aithaloessa agrees. “Though hopefully, like Haleen said, the ones that got away have learned to stay away, or got picked off by jackals or something. I’ve never looked into the range of a wounded giant spider.”

Upstairs there is fresh air, which is a nice change to the stale air in the basement. The spiders are not fond of meeting you again and leave to hide away, as soon as you come in sight.

Antarah comments "The spiders are afraid of us, but not necessarily any travelers. We should chase them." He sheathes his sword and gets ready to climb the wall after the spiders.

The spiders are impossible to corner as they can easily leave any corner in vertical direction. But with persistence and ranged weapons the group manages after an hour to hunt the two remaining spiders down and put an end to them.
