ROUND EIGHT
Boag-Hok oozes through the iron bars carefully, staying along the wall, away from Nasir. It is hard to see its oily black smoke in the darkness that pervades the room.
Frantino's readied attack goes off here, when it enters your threat range. No miss chance for Frantino, since he's got darkvision.
The air elemental moves even closer (AoO?) and bites at Frantino!
Poison Flyby Touch Attack (Fort DC16 negates): 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 14 + 2 = 22 HIT!
Con Damage+Smite Good: 1d3 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 (9pts of Con dmg causes a -4 Con penalty x 6 levels = -24hp)
The elemental moves away from Frantino, flying through the darkness to the far side of the room.
Tumble Thru DC18: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (4) + 17 = 21 Avoids AoO

Frantino Kaddren |

Ayita's barkskin will add a natural armor bonus to Frantino's AC, which is separate from the shield bonus from that spell. He'll gladly accept it, although it won't help against the poison touch attack.
Frustrated by the hit-and-run tactics of Boag-Hok, Frantino digs deep into his bag of tricks. As a swift action, his occultist side will spend his second (and final) point of divination mental focus on Sudden Insight to get +2 to his readied attack. Then, as a free action his investigator side will spend two points of inspiration to add an additional 1d6 to his attack roll.
+2 halberd w/ PA: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 2 + (6) = 27, damage: 1d10 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21 Max damage!
If that doesn't take out the elemental, the poison touch will clearly hit.

Roscoe aims carefully this time, hoping to hurt the elusive enemy.
As he aims, a voice inside his head speaks quietly,
This servant elemental is tied to the altar and cannot leave the room, silly halfling. Just leave. If you insist on fighting to the death, be smart. The more attacks it must avoid, the harder it must work to avoid each one.
With a flash of understanding, Roscoe drops his crossbow and draws his mace, moving to intercept it before it can attack Doc and Yazhi.

COMBAT OVER!

Nasir al-Rafik Kamal |

Nasir let's down his guard as the creature disappears.
"Agreed, Gregory C. Hatfield. Zat was indeed good shooting. Zis island is full of very dangerous creatures. Za Runelords had unusual and deadly monsters in their service."
He looks up at the gated platform.
"Now zat Boag-Hok has been disbatched, we should maybe see what he was guarding. If you are well enough Frantino Kaddren and Ayita, berhaps you can helb me force oben zis rusted gate unless someone has a bedder idea on how to open zis door?"
Nasir moves to the gated door and waits for some assistance to force the door open.

Frantino Kaddren |

As his arms return to their regular length, Frantino nods appreciatively at Ezranadir. "Great job, he proved to be a tough opponent. Still, I'm disappointed that his hunger overcame his self control, the knowledge of ancient Thassilon that just died with him was priceless."
Frantino fishes around in his backpack for a crowbar, but doesn't find one. He mutters to himself, "I could have sworn I packed one in here, I'll have to remember to buy one when we're back in the city."
Frantino will move over to the gate and assist Nasir.
Strength check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
If there's no time constraint, we'll succeed eventually.
Once we're through, Frantino will join in the analysis of the altar and its objects, tapping into his religious, historical, and arcane knowledge. "I can do one ruin reading per day, I can look back into the history of this altar or the portal room. Any input on which one might provide more valuable information?"
If we somehow leveled up right now, Frantino would suddenly have the ability to do two ruin readings per day, wink wink, nudge nudge. :-)

![]() |

I love leveling! That plus all the Halloween chocolate here would make a great Tuesday.
Ayita goes over to assist Frantino also; she shifts Yazhi to the "bull" hunter focus, and loops a bit of rope to let Yazhi participate.
Yazhi str check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

"Thank you for the praise but there was no skill involved. The spell auto-hits the target and I had a limited number. Just had to worry about passing its spell resistance. Seems it was resistant to many things, most everyone's weapons mainly. Perhaps someone should just see if there is a lever to open the gate." While talking he pulls out a crowbar from his handy haversack, "If you prefer brute strength, here, try using this, Nasir." He watches as everyone tries to open the barred gate.
Crowbar gives +2 circumstance bonus to Str checks.

Nasir al-Rafik Kamal |

Nasir takes the offered crowbar, levers it into the gate and pulls with everyone's help.
Strength Check: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 15
Oh come on! I hate that all my good rolls were on AoOs and readied attacks that never had a chance to even connect.
Will taking 20 on this help? That would give me a 26 with the crowbar.

GM Derek |

The rusted door yields to your efforts with a crash! and Nasir enters the altar area. The gleaming brass egg upon the altar tarnishes before your very eyes. The departure of the enslaved guardian elemental leaves the altar... old and lonely. A strong silence descends upon the room as a whole. The iron bars seem to rust and suffer the impact of the eons.
The altar and its etchings do not tarnish or degrade in anyway. The animating evil to which the altar is dedicated remains active and robust.
Frantino's careful eye knows that this altar would be VERY interesting to archeologists or other occult historians. Tracking the differences in the Polymorph Plague's icons, symbols and worship pictograms pre-Empire to now would be very valuable. But any respectable church in Magnimar would demand the immediate destruction of such a find!

Nasir al-Rafik Kamal |

"What do we zink of zis brass egg? Dragon egg? Sculpture? Sacrifice? What should we do with it?"

Frantino Kaddren |

"I wonder if doing my ruin reading down here would provide more information than doing it in the portal room? The portal itself has already given us some glimpses of recent events there, including images of who went through most recently. Perhaps down here I can see and hear some of what transpired between Boag-Hok and Mozamer before he went through the portal? Or glimpses of what happened here millenia ago? Any opinions as to which would be the better location?"
Frantino will search the area for hidden compartments after casting detect magic, then take a closer look at the egg, asking Ezranadir and Ayita for their opinions on its value if it's not magical.
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33

Ezranadir puts the crowbar away back in his haversack. He will take a tracing of the etchings/depictions on the alter. He looks over the tarnished brass egg-shaped censer as Frantino asks giving his estimation of value.
Egg Appraisal: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
"What about those few fragmentary notes about Mozamer's studies left behind in the pile of rags? What did they say? Doc, I think you picked them up."

I'd say the egg would squash really well!
Ayita is gripping her murderhammer, annoyed at constantly missing everything she tries to hit. And tripping all the time.

GM Derek |

The egg is solid brass. You expect you could probably get 100gp for it, assuming you don't tell anybody why it is so tarnished.
