Devlin the earth is form fitted to devlin and he is effectively helpless he can make a cbm check to escape (dc 20) the ground is soft and he is not very deep this would take a standard action to get out. While submerged he also get +8 ac.
No, allowing a reflex to duck underground while the dragon approaches would effectively make Devlin impossible to catch and impossible to attack, I cant allow that. Allowing you to be up to your nose in dirt was already a stretch as there is nothing in the rules that allows that. Normally you would have to pick between between entirely submerged or not at all at the end of your turn.
You would actually not even be able to move up attack and re-submerge as attacking ends your turn and you arms have to be above ground for you to attack. So really devlin would be at best waist deep in the ground. (providing partial cover)
I allowed you to say you were nose deep in the ground for flavor-roleplay but combat wise I am treating it the same as being partially submerged (half and half)

Ok, it's May 10. The main thread has been waiting since Obidiah on May 5. Rune (Apr 29) and Liam (May 1) last posted 11 and 9 days ago - they are up in the block init... When do we bot people?
Jonuli Mudarch |
It is your call as GM on that. I realized with the AMF I was useless against it. I never realized how potent that can be on a big strong creature like that. It was going to take naturally strong with a big weapon and power attack to take that thing down.
Devlin Plumb |
Yeah Not sure I wanna bot half the party thought but it's likely because this encounter is dragging on too much and people losing interest.
I feel like we should likely just end the encounter here for now and see who comes back.
I can work with that, as Jonuli says, it's your table and thus your call. I suspect for the next few encounters (which I see as finishing the Chimeras, and then the orc fortress), we can manage without the spare bodies. ( I could be wrong, but I think we jumped right in to the "boss" encounter for the "outside the castle" mini-level. )

The dragon was close enough to death it was obvious he was going to lose so ending it there just saves time. The dragon is more intended as a big warning sight to make the party think attacking the camp is a bad idea but I guess you could say he is the "Boss" of the outside area yes.
To be honest fighting the orc camp the dragon and everything outside it completely optional and avoidable (in fact the orc camp is a challenge rating 24 all together so normally attacking it would be a form of suicide.
To win you need to stop BBEG before he completes his objective which just means getting past the orc camp and getting into the castle and there are several ways to do this.
Normally I wouldn't say anything but I don't want us to waste too much time fighting too many encounters with the people at the camp.

The AMF is a big problem for everybody.
Sometimes you've just got to live with being suboptimal and pitch in.

Heh, I was under the impression that the inital objective was to break the siege...
As a party then, do we want to bypass the remaining orcs & assorted others (chimera's, IIRC, there was some mention of giants)? My tactical preference is actually to take them - I don't like functional enemy forces at my back, potentially blocking my run away option... But it will take a significant amount of pretty boring mechanical time.

A reasonable assumption and if we were playing IRL I wouldn't have said anything because as the gm I want to BBEG to get as close to completing his objective as possible before you find out what he is doing but at the current rate it would take a month before you finish dealing with the camp lol.
Yeah The AMF on dragons is a really nice trump card ti always makes me think of this one comic from order of the stick
In the future thought if you cant do anything against the opponent and would like to just hang back just make a post saying you take no action for the moment so I know your still here at least.
If that is what you want to do however we can there is a lot of intel and treasure to be had if you manage to take the camp it will just take a lot of time.

Is this one of those adventures where the PC's are on a timer that they don't know about? I kind of hate that in adventure design... "Oh, you have no (in game, known) reason to rush, but if you don't the world goes kabloey!"
Are we talking hours or days for the BBEG's objective? Or do we only find that out by taking the camp?

I am still here. I didnt post a combat action as I was still waiting for a response about my question on the chimeras.
Liam the Wanderer |
Sorry guys. I think I just forgot it was my turn and thought I was waiting for my turn to come up again. But yeah, the AMF was a big problem. I wasn't going to be able to do much to the dragon, and would have been pretty vulnerable to attack in return. A fair bit of my AC comes from items and the like.

I'm working on figuring out how were gonna proceed with this. I'm gonna try to turn the entire camp into a single encounter battle that will proceed in "waves" Gonna put together a map a few extra enemies will enter the map each round until you've beaten the majority of them and they retreat or surrender or you all die or run.
Devlin Plumb |
OK, DireMerc posted in his other campaign... So he's alive. So, at the very least, a post closing this would be nice...

I was debating this matter and yes I think I will just close this one and focus on the other game sorry about that.
The game was going down a path I did not anticipate and I didn't really know how to deal with that. I was being forced to choose between 2 options
1. Have the enemies trow their full force at you and kill you all.
2 have the enemies hold back just enough that you win but doing so would mean months of boring grindy combat.
Granted Devlin your character was incredibly overpowered and that made a frontal assault possible. I had a feeling that this was what was going to happen when you first submitted because I could tell it was a very min-maxed character which is why I was reluctant to include you in the game at all but at the same thing your not breaking any rules (not as far as I could tell anyways) and I could tell you really wanted to play so I let you in but it caused problems in that I needed to change the entire scenario just to be able to deal with Devlin and how crazy his abilities are.
It quickly became a frustrating experience for me and I wasn't really enjoying myself running the game anymore which is why I stepped away.
