I think this might be a Hail Mary but if someone (hint hint Rilia) can impersonate Zarta here, perhaps that can get the devil to stop attacking.
PS Glad you enjoyed that module! I had a blast running it!
William Grimm |
That might be the best plan. I'll go with casting Chill Touch like I am right now, but William would probably go down in one hit.
Now I'm wishing I got a CLW wand.
Rilia, Sacred Hetaira |
That's assuming that the creature is in Zarta's service, and not her enemy's. Also, bluff and/or disguise takes time, or appropriate magic, which I don't think we have.
If it is any consolation, CLW really won't help you much in this fight, getting back 5 hp as your action every round isn't going to save any of us for more than a round. Best to concentrate on offense, which of course means keeping your cleric alive! *smooch* ;)
So plans?
Grapple? Anyone one got tanglefoot bags, or other such commodities?
William Grimm |
Well, the devil did open with, "You are not her. You will die.", so it seems pretty clear where its allegiances lie. At the very least, it probably wasn't sent to kill her, which would mean that it would still be a distraction, and as the GM said, it isn't that intelligent, so it might work.
Of course, considering the context, it might cause more problems than just it trying to kill us.
Rilia, Sacred Hetaira |
It probably wouldn't work anyhow. Rilia's never met Zarta, and didn't think she would have to impersonate her when she's already been kidnapped. That and metagame-wise devils are often loaded true sight .
That, and I like Rilia's new plan in Gameplay even better--because it is TOTALLY CRAZY!
Sarah 'Toxic Tramp' Mullin |
My options here are to drink the mutagen and move up or move up and bomb again a bad roll could hit the party.
She is a chaotic so that won't worry her too much. and we know the bombs can hurt it.
Rilia, Sacred Hetaira |
So is that a "Yes, I just love your plan! One of us should definitely try to get away, and go fetch a bunch of embassy guards to come and beat this devil down with, and by the way--who does your hair?"
Lai Tsuan |
To be honest, the two of you are the high level characters, so it's most important that you two agree what the plan is.
Tsuan may not be able to physically damage the devil - but she doesn't know that yet so she's going to try. Tsuan may not be able to get through the doorway either - it's CMD+5 and I'm concerned she can't even get through on a natural 20 (e.g., CMD > 23).
So Tsuan's opinion is rather worthless at the moment. She can't help with either plan.
If Sarah starts lobbing bombs, Tsuan will get the hint and back off. Also because Tsuan is in the square she's assumed to be in, it should be easier to exclude her square.
If the agreement is to draw the devil back into the room so someone can slip through, Tsuan's good with that too. She'll be happy to get some help, so long as people don't feel like she got the easy job.
Also, I don't think the impersonation plan is horrible - there's a picture of Zarta on the wall, so we know what she looks like. Tsuan has +6 Disguise without the spell so she's willing to try that as well. If someone holds up the scroll, Tsuan can grab it, read it, and then re-appear as "Zarta."
Quinn the Investigator |
Um . . . ouch! :)
William Grimm |
So I think I know how to solve part of the puzzle, but William doesn't have Linguistics to get the second spoiler (I'm assuming that since Rilia said that she "stated the obvious", we can read the first spoiler, and that William no longer thinks that Zarta owes Sexikai Icnyd 30,052,905 gp). Would it be too metagamey to put my own thoughts in?

I = A and A = I because those are the only two single letters.
H = S or D with the apostrophe.
X and W are popular, probably on the "Wheel of Fortune list" - RSTNLE.
WE = TO or NO, E = O looks good and OKOXU = EVERY. QIKO = HAVE (and QIKO WE = HAVE TO).
...WEAS = ...TION and QO'H = HE'S or HE'D
(v)HAT A (g)A(s)! I (myd)T HAVE TO VE(s)T. EVERY (zx)OS(yf)TION HE'S ...
If A = I and I = A and E = O and O = E, maybe there are other pairs. But S = H makes (g)AH and VEHT, so that doesn't seem right.
That's as far as I got.
I suspect William is correct, but only because I recognize one of the names. Tsuan does not, though. And if the list is proper names they won"t be help decoding.
William Grimm |
I just used the passage above that (the "what a man!" one), since pattern of punctuation/word length was the same. The only discrepancy was the fact that the last letter was an h translating to s, which was previously used as a d, so with the translation, I used h as d and d as s, since a lowercase d could be mistaken for an h if written in haste, and it mostly made sense.
GM Nowruz |
William looks at the prisoner card. "Hey, that number is the same as the number next to Tancred Desimire's name in the coded sheet." After a second he gets out his notebook again. "I wonder..." he mutters as he, as before, starts jotting down notes. As he does, his eyes go wide and he starts looking more and more concerned. "Ok, using the code, I have somewhat of a translation. I can't be sure on the location, since there were errors in the names earlier, but the rest are just words."
William's Notebook wrote:CITADEL V(R?)AID

Well, that's what I get for trying to multitask translation from code and searching.
That is perfect William.
You also already checked Locker A23 and Jyrrar found the evidence there.

I was told NOT to make boon rolls as a GM. Was I told wrong?

This was an interesting and quite challenging scenario! I enjoyed it immensely!

I'd be up for it if the scenarios were thematically linked.
If there's a scenario that involves going after Zarta at Citadel Vraid, that would be a natural continuation of this one. I am also hoping to see Tancred Desimire get his comeuppance in general. I encountered him while GMing 4-09, the Blakros Matrimony (a great scenario that I'd love to play even though I've GMed).
PathfinderWiki lists other Tancred-containing scenarios as:
#4-09 The Blakros Matrimony (I've GMed, not played)
#4-11 The Disappeared (I've played)
#4-13 Fortress of the Nail
Ruins of Bonekeep Level 1: The Silent Grave
#5-00 Siege of the Diamond City
#5-03 The Hellknight's Feast (I've GMed, not played)
#5-09 The Traitor's Lodge
#5-14 Day of the Demon (I own this scenario already)
#5-22 Scars of the Third Crusade
#5-24 Assault on the Wound
#5-25 Vengeance at Sundered Crag
#5-99 The Paths We Choose
Ruins of Bonekeep Level 2: Maze of the Mind Slave
#6-05 Slave Ships of Absalom
#6-11 The Slave Master’s Mirror
Some of these will only tangentially include him (for example, 5-03 and 5-14 both have the phrase "Tancred Desimire" in the text, but the character doesn't appear), so the list of relevant scenarios is probably shorter than that.
Some of these will also present problems with leveling. (I'm doing a Valais Durant tripleheader with another group and in story order the levels are 3-7, 5-9, then 1-5, severely limiting the characters that can play all 3 in story order.)

The sequel to this scenario is 4-13 Fortress of the Nail (tier 5-9). I could GM that scenario later in the story for this group. There is one scenario which is not on your list that also fits where Tancred is not prominent but it would be great for RP : 5-21 merchant’s wake (tier 1-5) and I could GM that too.
William Grimm |
I would be happy to play with you all again! I'm pretty sure I only have one character that currently fits into the 5-9 range, and I'm mostly using him for home games, but I'm planning to apply some campaign chronicles to William once he reaches 3rd level that should bump him directly to 5th.
Jyrrar Rivurder |
Sure sign me up! I would like to continue playing Jyrrar as I want to get him a few levels, plus he is rather interesting to play :)
Lai Tsuan |
Does anyone know if Tancred's story line ends in one of those scenarios? Or is this whole arc going to end on a cliffhanger?
