”Immaculate Circle?” Kort repeats, thinking on the phrase.

1d20 + 18 + 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 18 + (3) + 2 = 39 Know (Local/History at -2) - Immaculate Circle
1d20 + 18 + 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 18 + (2) + 2 = 42 Know (Local) - Huddrigga

Major Kort is surprised that he has not heard of the Immaculate Circle before (other than the link of course). He has read a small treatise of secret societies in Taldor, but this one was not listed anywhere. Unusual.

Of Huddrigga he knows more. She’s apparently an inventive dwarven alchemist and member of the Cult of the Twilight Child. A longtime citizen of Yanmass, she’s known to be an alchemist for hire - and has a small shop selling this and that on the market square. Quite a prestigious location.

He looks confused but is easily led to one of the bedrooms with food and drink. Elen closes the door on him, confident in the protections of the inn itself. There’s only one way out of that room - the door. It leads into the suite so easy to spot if it’s opened for any reason. (There are windows, but they are heavily barred in this inn. If you recall they take security very seriously.)

The Chief Enumerator is the highest level priest in this town, the head of the church of Abadar, and on the high council of Yanmass. He’s probably the third most powerful person in the city, maybe fourth. That said, yes - the man has his price. He’ll certainly make a house call if need be, in exchange for information on the cult of course.

Just to take a step back a moment in case it helps the conversation. If Sir Meir Dratavis were here, he’d point out that he’s back - so you no longer have a task for the Princess here as he can take it back over. Further, you’ve done everything requested of you by the Council - leaving Sir Meir in great shape to convert the province to the Princess’ cause.

The only dangling thread is the elimination of the Cult of the Twilight Child - but if you fill in the high priest on what you saw there, give him the documentation about the place, and of course don’t return the Prince - well, in that case there’s not much Cult left.

In other words, you’re free. Sure, you need to report to Martella, but Elen can do that tonight readily enough if you wish. Oh, and as a reminder, it’s a two week journey by carriage back to the Betony Estate. You’re pretty sure the Princess would want you to bring the Prince home to her as well - if he is the Prince of course. He appears to be, but you aren’t certain.

All that to say, you have the time to do as you wish at the moment.

I forgot -- read Elen's spoiler. There are some things about the spells upon 'The Prince'.

”The poor boy.” Anger trembles through her. ”Vadriggan Pol and those who aid him are the worst sorts of noble swine. Everyone else is just playthings to them. Experiments and curiosities to be dressed up and prodded and put on display like dolls.”

The Night Swan takes to the papers Kamari was looking through. She flips through them quickly, pausing at the mention of an alchemist, then continuing. Finally, The Night Swan looks to Kamari. ”Did the notes mention anything about experimenting with his blood?” She grows quiet for an uncomfortably long moment, her uncovered eyes somewhere between fierce and sorrowful. ”I…knew of someone who was working in a similar field. In trying to imbue people with royal bloodlines.” Another pause as she glances away. ”I did not think it would be relevant.” Her voice drops. ”I hoped it would not be.”

Kort ponders more.

"And maybe the health of the child is no longer our concern? We can turn them over to the Princess' agents and let us be done with it," he muses aloud, probably forgetting something important.

"And it sounds like from Elen that he'll need some powerful magics in order to be cured in any way, and maybe the Princess will want to do that. I cannot guess," Kort muses stiffly. "I don't recall any talk of blood imbuing and if he's not truly royalty, not sure what the point would be."

Kort eventually rambles his way to thinking that it's time to offer a final report and return to home.

Kort wonders what others will say.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Edelmira relaxes when no blood work is noted anywhere in the files.

I’ve got Elen suggesting bringing in the high priest for Kamari, and perhaps the child. Major Kort seems to lean to departure and he seems to want to leave the child largely alone until you can hand him off to his sister (if he is the Prince of course) or at least leave it to the Princess to sort out. Kamari seems ready to go as well, perhaps even without an attempt at healing.

Edelmira and Muri, what are your votes? Is the party headed home tomorrow? Is the priest being called over?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As the Major responds to her worries and she looks through the papers, The Night Swan relaxes a bit. ”Yes of course. Why would that have anything to do with this. Pay me no mind.”

As to the group’s plans moving forward, she does not even need to think where her heart lies. ”I want to protect the boy. Keep him with us and see about his recovery while we bring him to the Princess. I would not entrust him to anyone else. We should see a priest about helping him, as well as about dealing with this strange curse on Kamari. I should not like to fight again until we have made it possible to heal her.”

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

The Chief Enumerator Abrun Palliettor is summoned. (A couple of you desired this, and it’s good for Kamari, so…) He arrives without too much delay, and enters the suite in his own boisterous way. ”So what have you found out about the Cult? Are they evil? Insidiously so? What can be done about them?”

You, presumably, fill him in (please feel free to elucidate). He asks a few questions, and inquires about proof. Let me know if you give him the notes you found pertaining to the cult from Vaddrigan Pol. Damning material that.

When he is informed of the golem battle, and Kamari’s seeping injuries, he frowns. ”Such things are hard to overcome, but once successful, the rest of the healing is easy.”

He starts with cure light wounds and works his way up until he succeeds at breaking the curse.

10d20 ⇒ (12, 4, 4, 15, 3, 14, 4, 2, 4, 18) = 80

It takes ten spells (he’s into the cure moderates by then) before Kamari feels the warm glow of healing on her injuries. He tops her up with a few more minor spells until Kamari is fully healed. He’ll charge only for the spells that worked - call it 180gp. I’ll take it off the group sheet.

Speaking of which, please peruse the treasure list and see if there’s anything you want. Might as well sell a few things before departure tomorrow while you’re in a big city so you have some cash in your pockets. Things are available here also that aren’t available in Lotheedar. If you’re upgrading things, they can be sent by fast horse to you - which means in most cases they’ll catch up to you before you even reach your home in Meratt County.

The priest says, before departing, ”The church owes you a debt of gratitude for what you have done. And the church always pays her debts. We’ll be watching out for you - you can count on it!”

Feel free to bring up the child if you wish and of course feel free to chat up the priest. For now the child is still hidden in a bedroom.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Kamari stands patiently and doubt sprouts and grows rapidly within her as the mighty priest casts one spell after another. When it finally works, she lets out a breath of air that had begun to burn inside her after being held for so long.

"Thank you," she says simply but heartfeltly.

Kamari shares the notes, but something--and probably prior agreement with the party--holds her back from mentioning the child. The boy seems like a problem for the Princess to have a first stab at--well, hopefully not that.

Since Elen, Edelmira, and Kort already have one, Kamari will claim one of the cloaks of resistance (+2) and add her cloak of resistance (+1) to the party treasure. She offers the second to Muri so the whole party can join in +2 resistance.

She admires the cape of mountebank but doesn't believe she'd use it. "It's worth a lot but also a really useful tool that we don't otherwise have. Would someone care to wear it instead of the cloak of resistance? We could also store it in my satchel for emergencies."

Elen:
Elen knows that Lord Abrun Palliettor has many secrets, as you might imagine. After all, he probably handles the money of most of the truly wealthy in town, plus the things he hears as a Councilor - and of course the things one tells one's priest.

He is also a loud and boisterous figure.

That said, he has a reputation for silence on matters of import. He doesn't lie well, so he more or less shouts everything at everyone and hopes people don't ask him hard questions. So far it's worked.

So no, she doesn't feel he is a blabber mouth. Quite the opposite. He keeps his secrets.

Kort is good on treasure.

That night, Kort will cast his remaining Protection from Evils on the boy, hoping that one might get lucky in snapping him out of whatever ails him. He will even offer his own cloak of resistance +2 while he does, and adds a Heroism too 8 castings left with +2 and +2 more.

If those fail, he will likely bring up the child to the Enumerator.

He is pleased that Kamari is fixed, and probably thinks if he wasn't focused on saving the boy, he might have attempted to fix Kamari himself. But, in his old age, he didn't consider it. M'Della would have known.

There are two spells which could be affected by protection from evil, so 8 rolls for each at +4 (on top of whatever the child brings to bear - which doesn’t look like much).

2d20 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 (DC 17 & 20)
2d20 ⇒ (1, 9) = 10 (DC 17 & 20)
2d20 ⇒ (10, 15) = 25 (DC 17 & 20)
2d20 ⇒ (8, 12) = 20 (DC 17 & 20)

2d20 ⇒ (17, 15) = 32 (DC 17 & 20) The lower level spell is suppressed for the duration.
1d20 ⇒ 6 (DC 20)
1d20 ⇒ 17 (DC 20) The higher level spell is suppressed for the duration.

The child continues to be distant and somewhat haunted. During the first reprieve, with some conversation, you’re able to figure out a charm spell has been suspended and his thoughts toward Vaddrigan Pol are a little more realistic and hostile.

After the second success, he’ll have a time of being himself, more or less. You’re able to determine he’s suffering under a dominate person. Pol was thorough. You’d know that means Pol can, to a degree, sense what he’s thinking and doing. Essentially Pol knows where he is and can, to a very limited degree, eavesdrop when he’s in the room. And of course he can control him at any time - telepathically.

Throughout it all though, there’s a catatonia that the child never quite shakes. He’s submissive and calm, and seems to scarcely sense his surroundings. You’re not sure what is causing this - perhaps some deep seated spell, perhaps just the suffering and imprisonment since his supposed rebirth. Perhaps, because he had been dead for so long, this is all that’s left. It’s hard to know, but there are certainly underlying traumas.

It’s the morning of Erastus 4, a Wealday. A half-moon glimmers in the early sunlight before the brightness of the day overcome it.

Do you depart Yanmass today for points south and home? As no one is commenting on the treasure sheet, you’ll pile the goods you’ve acquired on your carriage for departure - skipping what the trade city has to offer in your haste to return home to the Betony Estate.

Kamari is reluctant to go shopping in Yanmass and expose themselves. She's all for heading to Betony Estate ASAP.

Claimed a few things from the sheet. Main thing is the ring of mind shielding, which the private and subversive Edie would appreciate

Edelmira’s focus is entirely on the care of the boy. She hovers and lingers and stares and fusses, and she does it all with a quiet, anxious fervor. She offers to play games with him, bringing out her Imperial Conquest board. She tries to engage him in conversation as best she can.

She is annoyed that Pol can see through the boy, but she is careful not to change identities around anyone not in her comrades, so her dual identity is safe at least. ”I think we should sell some of what we have found and use the proceeds to purchase something that will help free the boy more permanently from his enchantments. It is worth doing for the boy’s safety alone, but it would be good to worry less about Pol’s interference.”

@GM would it be helpful to the would-be prince to put the ring of mind-shielding on him? Like would it do anything to keep him safe from Pol?

Kort wants nothing from the treasure sheet.

Kort witnesses the results of his magics with some stiffness, but is pleased for what he has learned. "We are going to need better magics to free the boy, if that is what we want to do."

Kort will help procure and cast a few Break Enchantments if that is what the party wants to do. He is neutral, at best, on the matter and prefers to let the Princess decide how she wants to handle her brother.

Edelmira puts the ring on the child’s finger, and he immediately takes it off. You repeat the process and he does it again - and cannot explain why he’s doing it - you suspect the domination. That said, it doesn’t seem to have an effect on the ongoing spells for the short time he’s wearing it. Good idea though, I had to look it up.

The party collects two scrolls of Break Enchantment (-2,250gp from the group), likely from the church of Abadar. Major Kort plies the powerful paper, casting on the boy.

First scroll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 vs DC 21
First scroll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 vs DC 21 Dominate Person dispelled!
First scroll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 vs DC 21 Charm Person dispelled!

Second scroll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 vs DC 21

The domination and charm both end - removing powerful tendrils of Vaddrigan Pol from the boy. The child is no longer telepathically linked, so he’s no longer a moving spying device. If anything however, he slumps even further and scarcely responds to any query, however simple. Over breakfast, you almost have to force feed him.

Elen sees that there is still one more spell upon the boy. A spell you were not able to remove at this time. It’s hard to know what it is from the effects you can see. The boy is basically catatonic now, without the support of the domination.

Still, he’s more serene it seems, and less troubled, so that’s something. And he won’t try to steal a weapon and attack you in the carriage just for fun. Vaddrigan Pol knows the links are severed of course, and that will have to give him pause.

As he climbs aboard, the man in the red leather bird mask appears atop the coach. ”Why have you not dealt with this abomination?!” he screeches while hammering on the carriage with his foot.

Suddenly, he changes shape (image)! This humanoid skeleton has black raven wings, a long tail, and a polished vulture-like mask where its face should be. He flies up with his, uh, scythe, just a few feet above the carriage. (10’ up total. Major Kort still has a full round action before we proceed.

Edelmira’s eyes fill with an anger and disgust rarely seen, a rage that makes it difficult to hold her eye. She turns such a glare at the Major as he seems to genuinely consider the option.

”I have seen no such evil in this child. He is a victim, and he should not be made to suffer simply for being brought into the world. Elen leaps onto the coach, drawing an oil and threatening the big birdlike thing. Major Kort reaches into the coach and helps protect the child.

”Souls are not to be forged! You should trust me as an agent of Pharasma!” he shrieks at Edelmira. He’s basically jumping up and down and ranting, but weaved through his ranting you’ll learn he believes the child is in fact Prince Carrius, but he was not raised or resurrected following normal protocols permitted by, but disliked by Pharasma (spells such as raise dead, resurrection, etc.). Nor was he brought to undeath - he is a living child and shouldn’t be.

He 5’ flaps back from Elen (though still within reach of her reach weapon, and she is in reach of his) and defensively casts to avoid getting slashed.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Kamari tumbles into position, though I think she’s just out of reach until the end, and then she stops. Edelmira prepares for the battle and risks exposure to her identity. Elen is the first to strike at, and draw blood from, the creature. Though she hits she does less damage with the blow than she'd like (DR 5/adamantine). Major Kort prepares to see invisibility (and does) while he ponders what the vanth meant by ‘forged’.

The Major is pretty sure it’s more of an arcana than a religion thing. It makes him think someone stitched together several souls to revive the Prince. Is that even possible? He doesn’t think so, and has not heard of anyone even trying such a ludicrous idea. He can imagine why a servant of Pharasma would be opposed to such a thing however.

Invisible still, Xan will cast freely this time, and everyone suffers for it (and he becomes visible again). He screeches a spell and everyone within 20’ is affected.

Damage (sonic/divine): 4d8 ⇒ (5, 3, 7, 8) = 23 Fort DC 17 for half damage. Fail and you’re also staggered 1 round.

Prince Carrius: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20 for 11 damage
Myrma: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 for 23 damage and staggered
Virgil: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 for 23 damage and staggered

Staggered means you get a move or standard but not both. You can still take free, swift, and immediate actions of course.

Spellcraft DC 19:
He cast Rebuke, trying to harm the child.
- - -

Then he casts a different spell even faster, which no one can stop, and he swiftly disappears. Again! I’ve left him on the map where he was last seen.

Spellcraft DC 17:
He cast a quickened invisibility. Remember he 5’ flapped, so he is where indicated on the map - just invisible.
- - -

Elen and Major Kort:
Yeup! He’s invisible again. Mostly as you two can ‘see’ him for the most part, I’m going to always have him on the map where he actually is, whether invisible or not. And you are assumed to see him, and call out his location for others.
- - -

Myrma keeps the horses from bolting, though she's struggling to remain standing, something they’re keen on doing what with the giant bird thing fighting and screeching behind them. Virgil drops like a stone however from the screech and begins to bleed freely from his ears - his fancy crossbow clattering on the paving stones next to him.

Even worse, the child too falls to the floor of the carriage, unconscious from the attack. A failed save certainly would have killed him.

Help Virgil? Help the boy? Kill the thing? Yes, yes, yes.

Unfortunately, she finds she's not able to do any of it, but sees Kort and Edelmira have at least handled one of the problems. She settles for her best hummingbird impression as she zigzags her way to be just above Xan with hopes of doing something more useful next round.

Kamari, warrior goddess of the skies (as all hummingbirds refer to themselves), positions herself exactly where she wants to be and avoids interference from the vanth. Edelmira heroically resists the painful shriek and so can heal the child who sputters back to life, choking a bit before looking around blearily. If anything, he’s even more catatonic than before! (He’s at 0hp.) Elen can’t seem to find the damn bird despite her extraordinary senses. Major Kort fully heals the Prince who scarcely resists as the Major scoops him up.

He becomes visible after the first swing of course. He hits once before he swift casts again and again disappears. You all know where he is from Elen and Major Kort shouting it out though he’s still annoyingly invisible.

Myrma keeps the horses, at least relatively, calm. Virgil is snoozing comfortably on the cobbles, and the Prince hangs on to Major Kort. He’s shaking with shock and fear and at least dimly aware of how close to death he was.

Kamari misses twice, once due to the damned invisibility. Edelmira draws her shield and clambers onto the carriage ready to face the vanth. Major Kort readies an action that does not come to pass at the moment. Elen readies an attack, which triggers, and she draws blood once more.

Invisible for the start of his attack, Xan tries the infuriatingly flying Kamari as a target with his claws (she's too close for the scythe).

Myrma keeps the horses, at least relatively, calm. Virgil is snoozing comfortably on the cobbles, and the Prince hangs on to Major Kort. He’s shaking with shock and fear and at least dimly aware of how close to death he was.

A burley looking pair of well equipped guards exit the inn (remember it was semi-fortified?) and attack the flying creature with bows trying to lend a hand.

Kamari considers waiting for the vanth to become visible to target his wings--but you can't ready a full-round action.
