Edelmira quietly admires her comrades and the ceremony, putting on no more airs than what is necessary and expected. That whole affair at the caravanserai was exhausting, and it was a reminder that she needs to redouble her efforts to improve. She is aware that she often has such thoughts, but she would not be herself is she did not hold herself to the highest of standards. As she often does, she will plan on forcing herself through a crash course on a number of topics this evening.

She nods along with the others mentioning needing a couple of days. ”We also have a fair amount of information to sift through and will need to take time in order to corroborate and confirm the details so that we can give the Council the highest quality report.”

Once Gregor has left to pass on the news, she turns to the Major. ”Speaking of which, I think I may be able to provide some assistance with decoding those documents in the morning. I will be doing a great deal of reading tonight.”

As mentioned on slack, Edie will put up her +1 Ring of Protection for the party divvy, and makes no claim to the Swarmbane Clasp. Happy to sell it or let someone else use it

Kamari starts doing the math in her head and dreaming of the long sought-after winged boots. She chats with whoever is shopping.

"We need one, okay probably two, cure light wound wands. Um, I think we didn't use up much more in the last few days--no poison or soul-sucking monsters. What else have we found ourselves in need of?" she asks reluctantly knowing any purchase will reduce her share of the remaining profits.

"Does anyone owe us any favors or discounts?"

There are only five of us now, she considers and recalculates.

"And what do we have left to do back at the Betony estate?" she inquires unenthusiastically.

The party dines fantastically (as usual) in the hotel after the ceremony. A few folks come up and congratulate you. Your reputations grow!

Early the next day (Erastus 1, a Sunday) you begin preparing for the sale of goods, and the purchase of mighty magics.

I still need to know if you’re giving the entire scimitar to the military. You’re already returning weapons, and a string of horses. The missing horses might be worth 2,400gp and the elephant another 1,500gp (war trained) so the value is about right. Quite a gift though!

The Major spends the morning pouring over the documents. Perhaps it is the name he was given, but by following the money, and a few cryptic notes, it seems clear that the funds the Gray Kingmaker was spending come from high up in the Taldan military. It’s likely that it’s Maxillar Pythareus himself, but these documents don’t definitively prove it.

Still, this is valuable evidence. More like this and the Princess will be able to use it as leverage against Maxillar in a public forum!

However, you can prove definitively that Earl Merkondus was behind the nightmares and the bandit raids and the missing Taldan regiment. Perhaps you can squeeze Maxillar’s name out of him, but you doubt it. It’s even possible that Maxillar doesn’t know the methods the Earl is using here.

So you can, quite easily, bring down the Earl. But placing the blame further up is more of a political matter, and you expect you should let the Princess make those kinds of coordinated decisions.

Let me know what you plan to purchase for the group and I’ll do a divvy. Then you’ll have the afternoon to make purchases, and relax a bit. Do you want to meet the council tomorrow? Or take the full two days rest first? Keep in mind it'll take time to upgrade any magic items you're upgrading... So slowing down the council may be to your benefit.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Kamari sees no reason to give away the scimitar or any other goods that didn't originally belong to the cavalry.

In terms of keeping and purchases, Kamari advocates keeping the useful potions:
- #4480 - potion of delay poison
- #4480 - potion of lesser restoration (but we do have two wands showing on the party possession sheet so she's flexible)
- #4540 2x potion CMW, #4192 2x potion CMW, #4145 2x potion CMW - I say we keep them for emergencies or at least one for each person
- #4192 - 1x potion of CSW (we could sell the CLW potions though)

Otherwise, Kamari isn't interested in keeping anything else and is fine with letting others keep things they think they need.

Kamari inquires of Kort about the status of their CLW and lesser restoration wands.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Regarding Earl Merkondus, Kamari proposes presenting the evidence at the council and being prepared to take the Earl into custody--avoiding the metagaming here.

While becoming more comfortable with real politics--versus those of her cafe oratories and debates--Kamari thinks it's best to bring any information about connections to Maxillar to Lady Lotheed or the Princess.

Edelmira concurs with Kamari. ”Indeed. Without know precisely how much power that Maxillar holds in the military and over who, I do not think it wise to place any powerful weapons in their care. Its value would be better suited to our cause.”

Regarding the potions, Edelmira picks up one of the cure moderate wounds potions. ”I could use one of these, as I only have a wand and a light cure. I think the lesser restoration potion has a value that the wand cannot replicate, as a potion one merely has to quickly drink, while that particular spell takes approximately 18 seconds to cast, far too much time for the heat of battle.”

Male Halfling Herder/15

Muri suggests that the flaming scimitar be given to the military, as a means of making their cavalry whole again. It's made easier in his mind when he's given a really nice ring.

"It would make a nice exchange of gifts, I think. It's also something we could bring up in the future, as a gift to Yanmass from the Princess's representatives."

The halfling understands why the others might want to keep the scimitar's wealth for the group's benefit, so he doesn't argue as much as ruminate aloud.

"I also think that Merkondus is deciding whether or not we know things, since we survived. If he decides we know too much, he might flee before we can talk with the Council."

Making no claims to anything here. Fine with giving the flaming sword to the military. Debating bracers. Sorry, head's not in this right now. Need time to think.

"Oh, that's a splendid idea -- giving the flaming scimitar to the military. If Fathrie chooses the wrong path, she could become a victim of her own weapon. Poetic justice."

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Having saved the city and their military, Kamari is confused about the desire to give--not return--the blade to the military. She also doesn't see the need to exchange gifts as they are not on a trade mission. They were sent to assist. They overcame great challenges to save the town. They were given rings in appreciation. It almost seems rude to her to try to match those gifts.

There are six potions of CMW. So everyone can get one, and someone gets two. Who is tracking the delay poison position and the lesser restoration potion? Elen already picked up the CSW potion to replace one she used, and I have the CLW set to sell. That said there are two other CSW potions which I don’t think have been picked up by anyone.

As for Betony projects, the party has 15,100gp in the projects fund already, so I don’t think you need to add anything there. :) Also, hard to start projects from here, though Elen has ways to reach out to your Mayor and other servants to get things going if you really want to. You can transfer funds through the church of Abadar easily enough as well. Here's the link (link) if you’re so inclined.

Also, it looks like the final vote on the flaming scimitar is to give it up to the military (3-2 if I parse your votes right), so I have not included it in the sums below. However, you haven’t given it up yet, so it can still be part of a future divvy if you change your collective minds. I’ve also left off the bracers for now in case Elen wants them. If not we’ll just throw ‘em in the next divvy.

Party Divvy
Each of you receive 7,115gp in personal wealth, while the group also buys Speak with Dead Scroll, Church of Abadar, Stone to Flesh Scroll x2, Wand CLW x3, Scroll Restoration (1k) x2, Scroll Remove Curse, Scroll Remove Blind/Deaf.

Furthermore, as you begin to shop around town, you discover the good will of the people extends to the merchant class! They’ve been suffering on many fronts, and they’re pleased that you’ve at least stopped the nightmares (they don’t of course yet know you’ve stopped the bandit raids too!). The magical merchants you deal with all offer a 10% discount on any purchase or upgrade. Non magical merchants are offering a 20% discount!

As you shop, you’re frequently stopped on the streets while the people thank you. The nightmares were truly terrible, and everyone knows someone who was affected, if they weren’t themselves. So you hear many stories of atrocities in the night, and the calm that has now descended on the dark.

Happy shopping! Also let me know what you’re planning to do with your day off tomorrow. You’ll meet with the council the day after. You have an afternoon (to shop) and a full day (to do whatever) at your disposal.

Still not understanding, but willing to live with the overly generous donation of the sword to the military, Kamari recalculates everything and is relieved to see there are still enough proceeds for the boots after purchasing Kort's recommended items.

Kamari will store the extra CMW potions in her satchel and head out in search of her precious boots.
I'm good about tracking individual disposable items like these and tanglefoot bags assigned to her personally.

Having earned many degrees in real life, Kamari walks about the city more like a professor than a student now. She doesn't walk stiffly with her nose held high, but there is definitely an air of confidence and worldliness about her. This doesn't keep her from easy smiles and stopping to talk to anyone who approaches. In public, she happily shares some kid-friendly stories of events, being sure to highlight the bravery and teamwork of everyone in the party. In bars, she does her best to provide the best gruesome descriptions.

She browses about but doesn't really pick up anything other than a few drinks and sweets until she finds the perfect pair of boots. She insists on testing them and will fly about and high above the shop up to the clouds before returning to the ground.

It's even better than the hot-air balloon ride back in Oppara!

Kamari reluctantly walks back to the inn after her shopping trip, mindful of the limited number of times she can fly per day. However, she plans a trip for the evening after dinner under the stars while saving one use for any emergency.

Anyone in a position to loan Kort about 2000gp?

The halfling woman who sells Kamari the boots looks uneasily at them as she parts with them. She winks at her, "These are a lot of fun." She smiles wistfully as she leaves.

Major Kort would know that the bank of Abadar would be more than happy to loan him such funds, and at very reasonable rates too. The party is in good stead with the church of Abadar.

Kamari begins the party's day off in the air seeing the sunrise from a new angle. Upon returning to the ground she has breakfast and then will review the evidence gathered so she understands it--better than the player. She hopes the next day's meeting with the council will be straightforward, but realistically expects it to be a struggle. She considers drawing out some colorful charts on paper to explain the connections, something she could point to with powerful gestures, but decides against it in the end.

Edelmira has finally finished her project of spreading her renown—and that of her alter-ego—through the city at this point, so she has one less major project eating up her time. She is waiting on getting her upgraded cloak back at the moment. She is not much of one for group projects, so she instead reads over the materials that the Major decoded and their other evidence to make sure that it is all iron lad in her mind.

You spend the full two days going over what you’ve found, and resting from your ordeals.

Finally, on Erastus the 3rd, a Toilday, you meet with the High Council just after breakfast - at 10am. Your carriage takes you the short distance through the city to the Council chambers. After all, lords and ladies must travel in style. It’s been some time now since you walked anywhere. Some of the townsfolk stop and waive as you go by, and more than a few bow or curtsy out of respect. You expect that will fade with time, but for now the good will toward you is palpable.

Rhundle Navin, the banker you freed from the pairaka’s domain - the one with the knife in his genitals - strides rather more healthily up to greet you as you enter the chambers. He loudly praises you in front of the council for saving him. It turns out, he’s a lesser councillor, and a man of some little influence. His opening praise leads to pats on the back all around, as councilors lesser and greater crowd you, each wanting to thank you and share their horror stories of the last weeks.

Eventually Lord Rudig Autun, frowning as usual, calls the meeting to order, and the various well wishers take to their seats. A few, mostly Imperialists, did not come to greet you and heap praise upon you, but even they are smiling in your direction. For the most part. Earl Merkondus is also here of course, eager to push his own agenda no doubt. He does not look particularly pleased, and is no doubt casting for a way to turn this to his advantage. The more observant of you can tell from the look on his face - he hasn’t found a way as yet.

Lord Rudig, an Imperialist if you remember, begins to speak, when the Baron again makes an appearance! He strides in, taking his chair at the head of the assembly, but begs off any official capacity. Waiving at Lord Rudig he says, ”Oh, don’t mind me. Please carry on.” Lord Rudig Autun stumbles a bit as he proceeds, clearly not expecting the Baron back so soon in the chamber - in any capacity.

Still, he struggles on, ”My Lords and Ladies of Yanmass, welcome. We understand you have an update to provide for us regarding your various tasks around town.”

”Yes, and what of these cultists?” cries Chief Enumerator Abrun Palliettor interrupting, ”What devious plot have you uncovered there?!”

”Now, now,” Lord Rudig, still standing, cuts him off. ”Let us allow these people the opportunity to explain themselves. After all, they’ve had two days to prepare for this meeting. They must have an opening statement of some kind. Don’t you?”

He turns to the party, and waits for someone to speak.

Feel free to be as specific as you like. The council knows of your activities up through the pairaka div victory. So there are some investigations, the medusa, and the caravanserai of course still to cover. And you have proof of the Earl’s backing of at least the nightmares, the missing Taldan regiment, and the increased banditry - the last two neatly tied together of course.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Kamari takes a step forward and nods acknowledgement to the Baron, then the councilors, and finally the rest of those present.

"My Lords and Ladies, and indeed, all residents of Yanmass, we bring much good news for the town and its people. We have brought an end to many of the afflictions beleaguering the town. And, we have found the source of those scourges."

Kamari will recount briefly the destruction of the pairaka dav and offer a succinct accounting of the party's encounter with the medusa. She will cover events at the caravanserai--omitting the final prisoner and his eventual release--and highlighting all the evidence recovered without going into specifics yet.

Having told the general story and being sure that her audience is paying attention, Kamari will launch into a dissertation on how Earl Merkondus is responsible for their troubles as she walks slowly toward him, pounding her fist into her hand with each point extracted from their research. She'll stop a few feet short of him and turn back to the Baron.

Edelmira waits her turn and stands, bowing before the council as a sign of respect. ”If you will please indulge me a moment, the matter at hand is one of grave import, and I wish to only give it the time and consideration meet to it. I would like to preface my statement on our investigation with a personal note. I would not presume to speak on behalf of my comrades, but I can at least accentuate my own position and how I arrived at it. I will remind all of you that I am a relative of the Senator Karthis, a great proponent of the Imperialist cause. As is the rest of my family. So even if one was to assume that I hold some particular personal bias towards the Loyalist cause, would I not also have a strong material motivation to cleave to my family’s cause as well?”

She lets the question linger a moment and settle in the listener’s minds. ”Further, I think you will find that I am well-known as someone who does not make decisions without serious and rigorous inquiry. I take the truth seriously.” She begins to scan the faces of each of the council, making sure to make eye contact. She always has to take special effort to do so. ”With my preface completed, I want to draw your attention to various evidence that we have collected. I think the conclusions will be clear without me needing to add argument to them.”

She gives a dispassionate and thoughtful description of each piece of evidence and its relevant and notable characteristics. She maintains a perspective of neutral arbitration throughout, as though she is merely a thoughtful centrist driven to speak by incontrovertible fact. When the presentation has ceased, she moves to a concluding statement.

”I think we can all agree that this evidence is significant and profound, and I would not think to impugn someone of the accused’s status without such damning information.” She points to the culprit. ”I feel I have no choice but to accuse Earl Merkondus of organizing and perpetuating conspiracy against this city and its citizens, including the heinous and debauched acts of the pairaka divs and their dream manipulations, all to serve his own ends. I ask this council to arrest him immediately pending further investigation of his offices, accounting, and other holdings to confirm what we have learned.”

He bows deeply to the assemblage, and whirls his cape around himself!

You dash through the streets, and people make way for you as you run - for the most part. Elen, and Muri riding the swift Underfoot, pull ahead of the rest of the group a bit, as they lead with speed.

You reach the hotel breathlessly just a few moments later. The guards stand before you (remember the place is well guarded) as you’re running at top speed and that tends to make them nervous. A quick exchange, for they know who you are, and you’re through. Elen and Muri are slowed a bit here, but presumably tell the guards more are coming so the rest of the group catches up a bit as they are rushed through when they in turn arrive.

You dash up the wide semi-circular staircases to the second floor where the suites are located, scarcely setting foot in the broad lobby. There are just a few suites as fine as yours here, and the Earl is staying in one of them. His is, in fact, the finest in the building.

Elen and Muri, you’re confronted by a locked door. You have two rounds to act before Kamari and Edelmira catch up (the Night Swan isn’t coming per OOC discussion). You expect on the other side of the door will be a large sitting room with other doors leading off into private offices, bedrooms, etc. for the resident Earl - assuming the space is laid out like yours.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

After exiting the council chambers, Kamari will activate her winged boots so that she can keep pace with Muri.

That should put her just a round behind Muri and Elen I believe. How far is the hotel from council chambers? Speed is 60' and lasts five minutes.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

If there's a window in the hallway, Kamari will fly out and try to look in one of the windows to the Earl's rooms. If not, she'll stand by and watch Elen take the door apart. All of this with her rapier out of course.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Yes, Kamari, as per our OOC, is there with Elen and Muri. She’d know from your own rooms that the windows are heavily barred. So she might see something, but she’ll not be able to join the group in any easy way if she does. For now I’ll assume you stay at the door, but feel free to be outside instead. There may be things to see.

Underfoot strains against the door, but the fine inn doesn’t scrimp on it’s doors (DC 25) and it holds, but only just! For while the door is stressed, Elen hacks away at it and drops it in round two - sundering the door from its very hinges.

You breach the doors to reveal exactly what you expected - in some aspects. The room is a nice comfortable sitting room, but the furniture has been hastily cleared from the main area. Much of it was jammed against the door, but it falls away fairly easily when there’s no longer a door to be pressed up against. So yes, there is some detritus at the doorway, but you can still move through it easily enough - no terrain effect or cover boost.

Two incredibly burly women stand on the other side of the door, ready to face you. Though they have earth breakers on their backs, they’re holding ropes in their hands. Maybe nets? They are wearing the skins of what must have been lions in their past lives. Very strangely sort of circusy.

You’ve seen them before however. They are Earl Markondus’ bodyguards and they are very serious folk who take their job seriously. The Earl wouldn’t have brought them with him to the Council chambers any more than you’d bring Myrma and Virgil. So they were here when he returned and have readied the ground for fighting while you ran/flew up.

They roar and wait to attack!

Kamari - 16

Muri: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Good Folk: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

New map up!

You do not see the Earl as yet, pending Kamari's location. Also, contrary to the art I could find, the ladies do not have shields and are currently wielding ropes. As they heard Elen hacking away on the door, there is no surprise round for either group.

Next up - Muri, Edelmira, and Kamari for the first half of round one!

Edelmira shows up in a patchwork of the less-distinctive bits of her Night Swan armor, havign to make do without enough time to change into her alter-ego.

She moves up closer, shouting at the bodyguard she sees. ”Stand down, you fool! You are throwing your life away if you persist in this nonsense.”

Earl Yander steps into the room, stuffing no doubt incriminating letters into his waistcoat. He draws his rapier, was that a shake?, as he moves but he doesn’t come far into the suite feeling more comfortable hanging back a little. His confidence is clearly sapped.

Major Kort lights up red - twice! Elen tumbles, feints, springs, and slices the Earl across the thigh as he yelps in pain! Muri plunges a pair of arrows in red, trying to break the grapple. Edelmira swoops in, making herself a target, and demoralizing blue at the same time! Kamari tries to wriggle free at the end of the round, but she is stuck firmly in place by the strongwoman.

The Earl weaves a captivating tale of the power of all Taldor and the monumental state of this battle. Clearly he favors his side as the winning side and the tidal wave of support he feels he’ll gain.

Everyone please make a Will, DC 18 (mind affecting) or you are flatfooted for the round (which I don't think affects my round, but make the save anyway - for if you save, you're immune to future attempts).

He then 5' steps out of Elen's immediate reach, and casts Mirror Image on himself! images: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

It takes two tries, but blue does indeed truss the poor warrior. (DC 33 to break free, though someone could cut the ropes as well - Sunder maneuver.)

Red drops the grapple (free action) as Kamari is now tied up, and rushes Muri and Major Kort, the root of her current pain. She draws her earth breaker as she goes, and swings at Major Kort when she arrives!
