Male Halfling Herder/17

Knowledge(Local) v DC 20: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

"He acts differently from the cavalry we saw back in Yanmass. His clothes and equipment, the way he carries himself, I wonder if he's more of a mercenary." Muri smiles when it starts sounding like they've got themselves a proper prisoner.

"Well, we should secure the rest of the keep, then depart. Also, keep your eyes peeled, since there's still a drake about."

Having offered the correct thing to do, Kort will let others do what they wish with Jondus. As he wouldn’t be carrying the man back, either as prisoner or corpse (because Kort would leave him to the crows), Kort will wash his hands of it.

”I’m ready to move on when you all are ready.”

Moved on map to the other up spot.

"Maybe we can find a home for that poor elephant, too," Elen says heading toward the other 2nd floor wing.

Moved on map.

Major K'Aldrian Kort 1ATD, Ret. wrote:
"Jurisdiction? We don't need no stiffing jurisdiction," Kort says. "We are completely allowed to kill Qadirans within our borders. As he claims such, I will take him at his word. A crossbow bolt to the skull should do the trick."

As much as I don’t like to argue with an old man, there is no current war with Qadira. And so it is not actually legal to kill any random Qadirans within your borders. These guys are clearly committing crimes of course, I’m just speaking to the general statement.

You secure Jondus carefully and continue your searches.

Returning downstairs you pass through the courtyard again where the first thing you notice is the absence of the elephant. You’ll notice that the heavy horses are also missing, though not the light horses. Moving to the eastern wing, the halflings are still there, and still demanding payment for their services, but the guards have broken free and have fled - presumably with the heavy horses.

You then investigate the upstairs of the eastern wing. Now essentially empty, there are two rooms.

The floor of this southern bedroom is covered in mud and dried stalks of grass. A large unmade bed is crammed into an alcove in the northeast corner of the east wall. A table strewn with several maps and a couple of chairs piled with dirty clothes occupy the southwestern corner. The room looks attended by at two people living together as well as the grasslings.

The maps are of the region and clearly show attacks on trade caravans in the region done by this lot. Further evidence for the truth of the matter before the council.

The other, slightly larger room, is empty as well. Several overstuffed chairs and small tables have been pushed up against the eastern and southern walls of this room, leaving a wide space covered with a thin layer of soil and weeds. Two chandeliers dangle from the ceiling, broken.

A swarm of insects unearths itself from the dirt as you step into the room! Deadly though they may be, closing the door on them stops their reign of terror and they dissipate in just a minute or two so I’m hand waiving this one. An unresetting trap, you’re able to find a swarmbane clasp buried in the dirt after the swarms dissipate.

The caravanserai is yours. Well, except for the halfling servants of course. Their union rep continues to badger you for severance pay considering you’ve killed all their bosses. He apparently doesn’t consider Jondus a ‘boss’ as he never paid them.

Female Jininese Elf Lvl 16

Elen meets the union rep. eye to eye and says, "To be sure, you are owed. and there is one who can pay. Come seek your pay before the Council in Yanmass.".

Once everyone is ready, she moves on dragging Jondus if necessary to the carriage that awaits them all.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The incident with the bugs leaves The Night Swan quite unsettled, much like the groups’ last run-in with a swarm. She anxiously holds onto the swarmbane clasp, unless someone else has a more pressing need.

The Night Swan listens respectfully and attentively to the union rep.

In Halfling:

”Please, do not worry. You certainly have done nothing to deserve losing your pay. Our quarrel was with the defeated here, not with you, and there is no reason you should suffer for it. As my comrade says, we would be happy to present your suit to the Council and seek payment for you there. With luck, the patron of those we killed will be brought to justice and be forced to pay you. It was likely his money that was filtering down to you anyways.”

Bah! War or no war, we know what to do with Qadiran saboteurs, which these are.

Kort searches the canavanseri one more time before concluding anything. He worries he’s missed something that might be important.

1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 16 + 2 = 33 Perception

And then he will be ready to return to Yanmass. He cares little for the halflings, those that would serve the enemies of Taldor do not deserve the safety of its laws.

Male Halfling Herder/17

Muri and Underfoot return from a cursory patrol of the immediate surrounds of the caravanserai, just in time to hear the interaction with the halfling crew of the kitchen. He understands both approaches in his companions' counters to the one halfling speaking about pay owed and responsibility. He almost speaks up himself, before recognizing that too many diplomats spoil the broth talks.

When they're ready to depart, Muri and Underfoot will escort the carriage, eyes to the skies.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

Kamari is happy to leave and will spend the time on the return trip home going through the collection of documents they have recovered.

”Fine. But we’ll meet you back in town. We ain’t riding those horses. Skittish beasts. And we ain’t keeping up with you long-striders.” You sort out how he can contact you in Yanmass and the halflings trot off to pack up their kitchen. They do commandeer one of the light warhorses to haul their stuff so at least they’re walking easy.

The Major goes through the caravanserai one more time - just in case! His methodical search turns up a supporting document or two to help prove your case, but nothing of particular note as you’ve been careful.

I presume you take the more than two dozen light war horses with you rather then leave them to die?

You shuffle along the short 20 minute walk to camp, alert for danger. The sun is beginning to set as you reach your coach. Myrna and Virgil have supper started already so it’s not long before your sitting comfortably around a fire, with early stars just beginning to shine overhead and full bellies. Myrna and Virgil clean up as you pour over the documents you’ve found in the caravanserai.

Commander Jaliessa Staubel (elder sister to Jondus Staubel whose name you now discover) was a high-ranking officer in the Taldan Horse with a loyal following among her troops. When she accepted an offer from a well-funded noble to turn traitor, she managed to bring many of her junior officers and soldiers with her. This group of traitors set up at Tallgrasses, where they disguise themselves as the Qadiran bandits they once hunted.

Jondus Staubel’s name, your prisoner, appears on some documents in Jaliessa’s room and a short note to the side of one payment note makes their relationship clear. Jondus is the brother of the now dead Jaliessa - the former head of this group and the one with the ram. Jondus’s wife, Fathrie, is still at large. Quite the family affair.

This whole thing was financed by someone called the ‘Gray Kingmaker’. However, these documents, along with the ones at the meat processing plant / nightmare factory, make it clear that the ‘Gray Kingmaker’ is none other than Earl Merkondus. He financed and planned both the nightmares that plagued the city, and the recent rash of attacks against primary Loyalist caravans by ‘Qadirans’ to further push the city into the arms of Maxillar Pythareus - who is promoting war with Qadira as part of his platform.

There is more to be learned, Major Kort is sure of it. Linguistics DC 25. You can check daily, Major Kort already checked today.

The night passes uneventfully, though those on watch find themselves more watchful than usual - knowing Jondus’ wife is out there, somewhere, and likely on her way back.

It is the morning of Sarenith the 30th, a Starday - and a hot day for this early in the summer. Let me know if you do anything special as you head back to Yanmass. With the trail of horses tethered behind your coach, you won’t make good time, but you should still reach town in time for supper.

Myrna breaks camp the next day as Virgil puts the many light warhorses on a train. Still, they’re efficient so the start isn’t too late as you head out into the heat of the day.

It’s well after the morning break, maybe an hour before lunch, when a drake flies low over some scrub and hovers over the road. An image from Elen’s mental probe is riding the drake, in all her finery (image).

She calls down ”Let your prisoner go free, and there needs be no bloodshed here today. We’ll be on our way, and we’ll not to return to pester you or yours I promise you.” As she shouts her offer, two more ‘Qadirans’ ride up and flank her.

We’re not in combat as yet, but I imagine it’s imminent, so limit your actions to a full round. Remember, speechifying is a free action within reason. Keep in mind, I presume the party is in the coach, with Muri and Underfoot ranging a bit, Myrma and Virgil on top, and your prisoner on the lead horse of the light war horses trailing behind you. Your prisoner is of course tied up so he can’t just grab the reigns and ride off.

New map up. The ‘greenery’ on the map is low scrub and tall grasses. So it’s difficult terrain but no worse.

The only thing Elen was completely sure of in that linguistics “check” was that she was thoroughly unhelpful.. :-)

She stays near the carriage and in particular the horse Jondus is bound to in case someone decides to throw a fireball. She sizes up the stern looking woman with the flaming sword.

”You look smarter than your love! You should know it can’t work that way. Why don’t you come with us and explain your attempted subversion of Taldan civilians? Surely your arm was twisted – or was it the substantial sums of money? Repent, own up, or " she shrugs, "maybe die.”

She ignores the callousness of the comment, and lands her dragon, but does not dismount. Still, in a quieter voice she offers, ”I can tell you who hired the Taldan Horse Regiment. The why will be obvious enough when you know the who. This is valuable information no doubt and should be worth the price of a non-talking prisoner.”

”Always with the threats. Perhaps I shall not best you,” she eyes Elen’s strength and smooth movement, ”But I’m pretty sure your servants won’t survive the conflagration. I die… they die… it’s all so avoidable if we simply come to some agreement. Do you want my information? I can tell you who held the purse strings for this little endeavor.”

Major Kort knows little more about this drake as it’s identical to the one previously identified and fought. Well, not identical. This one isn’t injured as yet. So he knows there’s no DR, it can dazzle (intimidate) opponents, breath an electrical sandstorm, etc.

The Night Swan opens her door of the carriage, hanging from the doorframe and letting her cape flow dramatically in the wind.

You untie Jondus, keeping the scimitar, and Fathrie smiles. Jondus climbs aboard the dragon and the pair fly off to the east. The two remaining members of her gang look at her, look at you, and quickly ride off to the east as well, pressing their horses lest you change your mind.

The rest of your journey to Yanmass is uneventful and you enter the wide gates mid-afternoon of Sarenith 30, a Sturdy. You make some waves as you enter given the train of horses stretched out behind a rather fine carriage. Not your usual trade-conveyance, but no difficulty getting through.

I presume you deposit the horses with what’s left of the Yanmass Cavalry Garrison, along with the weapons and other goods you collected that were clearly Taldan issue.

Putting off other shopping for the moment, for you’re tired, as are your horses, you roll back to your fancy hotel - where your aid Gregor Hamble frantically gets your attention before you even disembark.

”Where have you been!?”

Kort gives the man a stiff glare and canes himself forward, a bit slower, and definitely not rushing.

We have been saving the kingdom from Taldan traitors, you arse. Now shut up and get out of the way.

Kort will take his time getting to his chair, caning forward and in no rush. This gives him time to look around and sense the mood in the room.

Kamari takes her time with the others approaching the stage. She will let the council speak first since everything that has transpired is not for everyone's ears.

Muri dismounts, and leads Underfoot to a less public eye view behind the dais, providing her one of the ram horns to work on, while the oratory on stage has its day. Underfoot is not quiet with the gnawing, and Muri seems oblivious to the occasional cracking noises, as he takes a seat, and watches the various speakers speak.

Major Kort:
Nice sense motive. The crowd is here because they were apparently told something was going to be announced. But not what. So you have the usual folks who are actually curious about local government, as well as simple passers by who are here because there’s a stage, and a crowd.

There is some unease among the people however. After all, Yanmass has been badly treated these last few weeks. Bandit raids and nightmares have been especially harsh. But that has spun into trade being down, for who wants to go to a place filled with raids and nightmares? Yanmass is, after all, a trade city. So the people are upset, losing money, sleep deprived - you know, uneasy.
- - -

You take your seats with a few words to scattered applause, for the crowd hasn’t yet been told who you are or why it matters. You’re somewhat famous (especially now) in Meratt County, but here you’re still largely unknown. As Myrma eases the carriage out of sight, another, even grander carriage rolls in. It’s the Baron!

Baron Kustios, the elderly head of Yanmass, hasn’t been seen publicly in weeks - so bad were his nightmares and lack of sleep. He dismounts heavily and looks a little haggard still, but he needs no support as he climbs the few stairs to the platform. Clearly, his health is much improved after a night or two’s nightmare-free sleep. He strides fairly boldly to the podium, and the councilor there stutters a brief, but grand and respectful introduction before leaving the stage.

The Baron looks over his shoulder at you and smiles, ”Ladies and gentlemen! Citizens of Yanmass! The nightmares are over! The applause is immediate and overwhelming. Everyone knew someone who suffered - or they suffered themselves. So the relief is palpable, pure, and visceral. If they weren’t already standing, you imagine the crowd would rise up with the force of their emotions.

The Baron lets it go a moment, turning again to nod to you, for it is your applause - though he clearly enjoys basking in it as well. When the crowd quiets down, and is growing quickly due to the celebratory tone, Baron Kustios says a few words. He introduces you, with your full titles, praises your skills as nobles, praises your investigatory talents, and praises your skill with sword and spell. He makes it clear you are the sons and daughters of Yanmass, at least in spirit. For if you weren’t born here, you are clearly cut from the same cloth.

Though a short speech, it’s filled with, well, praise. He then gestures to his chief aide, who steps up with a small box. ”As we haven’t any quality land to grant our newest Lords of Yanmass,” he continues to the crowd, ”I instead grant you these signet rings - proof of my favor. May they protect you in darkness and in light my new Lords of Yanmass!”

So… you have new titles to add to your introduction if you choose to, ‘Lord of Yanmass’. The rings are signets of Baron Kustios so they show his blessings on your actions, and are +2 protection rings to boot! Kamari, I’ll assume you wear this one, and put the old +2 protection ring into the kitty for sale. I assume the same for Major Kort and Elen, wearing +1 rings currently from the kitty. If anyone else has a ring of protection, you bought it, so you can sell it and keep the proceeds.

The Baron leads another round of boisterous applause as his aide places the rings on your respective fingers. The Baron nods to his aide, and strides back to his carriage. He does well, for the most part, but you see he does need help getting back in, such is his remaining weakness. Still, few see it as the carriage was well placed to hide his comings and goings, likely for just this reason.

With the Baron gone, the crowd lingers only briefly as the people have things to do and the headliner has left after all. You think you see Earl Merkondus frowning in the crowd at one point, but when you look again, he’s gone.

Gregor, your aide, says ”The Council would like to meet to discuss your progress on the bandit raids and other matters. Can I say you will meet them tomorrow morning? Or would you prefer another time?” He bustles you back to the hotel where he leaves you to your own devices. It’s nearly dinner and still Sarenith the 30th, a Starday.

Reminder to Major Kort he wanted to try and fully understand the documents you have (tomorrow he can roll again), and do some shopping (selling and buying will take a half day at least). Also, check the discussion thread if you haven’t recently.

Kamari admires her new ring and is thankful for not having stolen the stage from the Baron. She's happy to discuss recent events with the council in more private quarters and heads out for a day of shopping and selfishly basking in some local admiration.

Yes, add the +2 ring back into the kitty.

Oh yes, that's some nice bling.

If given the chance, Kort would take the extra time to decipher what needed to be deciphered, and definitely wished to buying more goods, but all that talk would have to wait until after the ceremony.

Kort will sit at stiff regular attention during the Baron's words, and he is happy that the nightmares have ceased.

"Give us two days to prepare a proper report, Gregor. We need to recover and get provisions, and take a bit more time to understand the forces against us," Kort asks.

Kamari, didn't you take the Bracers +2? Kort does not want them and they should be sold otherwise.

Female Jininese Elf Lvl 16

Elen dabs a briolette tear from the corner of her eye truly impressed with the presentation. ”These people worked really diligently for this. Pulled all the stops – just for us!”

She addresses Gregor agreeing with Kort and the others. ”Yes please, at least two days. We do need to prepare.”

Elen will think of things desperately needed or otherwise useful toward her growth in the meantime, and shop some – early and off times to avoid crowds.

She adds her RoP +1 back to the kitty.
