”Well met, Ohalia,” Elen says somewhat warmly. ”I am Elen, and of course as far as I am concerned, you are permitted to join us.” Out of respect, she will let the others introduce themselves.

Kort will stand aside and let the ritual happen, unless he is needed to make it happen and then he will do just that. Even retired, he still feels the strings of the chain of command, and defers to the Valkyrie.

If Kort is needed, what checks need be done?

Kamari wrote:
After struggling to comprehend a deceased ruler, now supernatural something, being abducted, Kamari asks, "Who would want to or would even be able to abduct him? Does this kind of thing happen often in the afterlife?"

Ohalia shrugs, ”There are many complications in life after death.” After all, she’s been a valkyrie for millennia. Imagine the battles she’s seen.

Muri Daybreaker wrote:
"You don't have to ask. We are blessed by your presence." Muri leans in saddle to look behind the valkyrie. "By all your presence."

She gestures smoothly, belying her age, ”They are not worthy.” and they depart, still ready for battle - just not with you.

”They will see to it we are not disturbed.” She commands of her einherji - and they rush to obey - hoping for someone to try to pass them!

”Thank you.” she says seriously.

”If you have not yet begun the ritual, perhaps I can help…”

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

So, the ritual is complicated.

You begin by placing the Mantle of Kings atop Taldaris’s sarcophagus (it’s already there). Then you anoint three concentric semicircles around the sarcophagus, arraying seven candles along each of the semicircles, and then light the incense in a censor.

While gently swinging the lit censor, sing the deeds of First Emperor Taldaris and perform a series of measured steps that retrace his army’s progress across the then fractured city states of the Inner Sea.

Upon completion, an apparition of Taldaris should appear, channeling his spirit from the Great Beyond to converse with those in attendance.

It is a difficult process however, and takes about an hour to perform. You’ll need to make the following checks, in order. You cannot take 10 on these rolls, but if you have even one skill point in a given skill, you may aid (DC 10 for the usual +2 or, in Muri’s case, +4). A different person can be the ‘lead’ for each check or it can be the same person throughout.

Spellcraft DC 35
Knowledge (history) DC 35
Knowledge (nobility) DC 35
Knowledge (religion) DC 35
Spellcraft DC 35

If a single check is failed the ritual fails at the end of the hour (and there is some blowback, but what it is you do not know). You can however try again. It’s mid morning, so lots of ‘daylight’ left to work it - if you fail of course.

Burning the rare incense reduces all skill checks by 2.
The Knowledge History check is reduced by 5 for the Major’s understanding of the angel’s dance.
The Knowledge Nobility check is reduced by 5 for Elen’s understanding of the angel’s dance.
By studying the murals, the Knowledge Religion check is reduced by 5.
By recruiting Ohalia’s aid, you gain a +5 insight bonus to any single roll (may be picked after the roll is made).

The checks are currently DC 30 except for spellcraft (35), -2 on all rolls for incense if you burn it. In short, a lot of complicated rolling but likely, eventual, success.

I suggest anyone with any skill points in a skill should go ahead and roll. I’ll take the highest bonus as the lead for that step, and I’ll apply any aid that succeeds.

Male Halfling Herder/15

The halfling dismounts, offering his hand to the valkyrie. "My name is Muri Daybreaker, of the Northern Taldor Daybreakers. Thank you for any help you're about to give us."

Muri soothes Underfoot, loosening the saddle straps to lend her some comfort as she spectates from the back of the room. Then the halfling does his best to lend his friends assistance, when it sounds like he can.

Male Halfling Herder/15

Muri takes a cue from Kamari, retreating to the back of the room, and starts cinching up Underfoot's saddle, so sure he is that Kort just completed the ancient ritual to the best of any of their ability. By himself.

He squints at the Professor, swearing he can tell he sees some strange aura about the old man, as if his visage is more appropriate on one of the ancient murals upstairs than it is in present-day Taldor...

Impressive counterpoint to our highly cynical GM, Kort. 'Eventual' he say, bah!

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

You perform the ritual splendidly, and manage the difficult task for which so many spent so much to prepare you. But a lot happens all at once as the something goes sideways…

The chamber’s lights dim then fade into darkness, obscuring the tomb. Your lights simply wink out. Not even darkvision seems to function for a moment. Then the faint sound of plate armor shifting clacks nearby, followed by a deep voice whispering, “A visitor? I do not know how you are here, but it is not safe. You can do no good here - only attract harm.”

As the voice continues, a window seems to open into a dimly lit cell, blurry as if looking through a sleepy eye. Inside the cell, a figure that seems as much machine as human sits on the ground and looks back with steely, featureless eyes. “I cannot give what you seek, only help you escape. Send a message to those who…” The speaker ceases abruptly, and the window snaps closed, only to reopen as a glaring yellow eye. Its pupil darts about, then more than a dozen similar eyes seem to snap open in all directions in the darkness.

A hissing, feminine voice calls out in alarm. “Overseer! Something has slipped through. Meddlers. Schemers. Let us see who intrudes.” A flabby, purple hand with a yellow eye in its palm reaches out of the darkness… but falls short before it can grab hold of you. The speaker cries out in pain, the hand recoils, the eyes grow distant, and different scenes appear briefly as an ethereal wind whips up in all directions.

First the distant eyes briefly rearrange themselves into a starry constellation of a person, but these then slide about like pearls on a dark cloth before being poured into a bag.

The bag appears at the belt of a man, featureless but for the spear he carries and the faintly glowing script that covers his body. He gazes down from a rooftop at the machine man from earlier before diving down into a dark pool.

The pool’s ripples become the contents of a mug held in a skeleton’s hands as it blows to cool the liquid. A clatter distracts it, and it gazes over to see a four-pointed crown toppled on the ground. As the skeleton crouches down for a closer look, the four points resolve into obelisks in a vast cemetery.

The vision’s perspective drifts toward a blank gravestone whose rocky texture fades to parchment that’s folded upon itself several times, sealed with a glob of wax, and slipped through the mail slot in a wooden door. It lands inside a wooden-floored home with the letter’s seal facing up, the wax imprinted with a watchful eye.

The machine man appears again and stoops to pick it up, idly rubbing the base of his hand where a ring might rest. Then the machine man collapses, a spear in his leg and the glowing tattooed figure visible just inside a nearby room. In a blink, both figures are gone, but at the same time the nearby room feels all the more real.

This post will be in the Notes section of the tracking sheet for future reference.

It takes you a moment to realize when your visions have ended and your own faculties have returned. However you find yourselves no longer in Taldaris’s tomb, but rather in a well appointed home.

This parlor has broad windows that look over a flower garden and neighboring homes in a carefully manicured community. A large harp and several chairs stand about the room. Mama D even finds herself sitting in one.

There’s a clockwork creature, and a large one, standing in the southern portion of the room. It is looking out the window, and does not immediately notice you.

Knowledge Arcana DC 23:
You face an advanced clockwork golem. N Large Construct. One question for each five you beat the DC.

Forged from thousands of gears, the clockwork golem is a precision creation. In combat, a clockwork golem is ruthlessly efficient, moving with swift conviction to grind and slice its foes to ribbons.

The Night Swan’s eyes dart about at the visions, desperately trying to keep track of the details as anything could be useful to figuring out what exactly has happened and why. She does not even bother to draw her weapon yer, still focused entirely on trying to make sense of this barrage of information.

”So…first a voice recognizing a visitor. But warning us. This person is a machine man in a cell. Who- or what-ever that is keeping him then seemed to notice us. The ritual was intended to contact Taldaris, and we—or rather the Major—did it correctly. The simplest explanation is that we succeeded, but that some antagonistic force has him imprisoned in the afterlife. Maybe they trapped him in a machine body?” She leaves the rest of the vision for now, trying to focus on the most tangible, practical solutions she can. Finally, she looks to her comrades. ”We need to confirm what is going on.”

Death Burst (Ex) When a clockwork golem is reduced to 0 or fewer hit points, it explodes in a shower of razor-sharp gears and debris. All creatures within a 10-foot burst take 12d6 points of slashing damage - a DC 18 Reflex save results in half damage.

Grind (Ex) A clockwork golem deals an additional 2d10+12 points of slashing damage when it makes a successful grapple check as razor-sharp gears and blades emerge from its body to grind and slice its foe.

Wall of Gears (Su) As a standard action, a clockwork golem can fold into a whirling wall of grinding gears measuring 10 feet by 10 feet or 5 feet by 20 feet. Anyone passing through the wall takes 15d6 points of slashing damage. If the wall appears in a creature’s space, that creature can attempt a DC 18 Reflex save to leap to one side and avoid the damage entirely. The clockwork golem can take no actions while in this form except to resume its normal form as a move action. A clockwork golem’s AC and immunities remain the same while it is in this form.

AoO Slam on Muri: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (4) + 23 = 27 damage: 2d10 + 8 ⇒ (9, 2) + 8 = 19 grab: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29

A hit, but no grab yet again, so Muri is wounded but unhindered.

Ohalia dives into battle, stepping in front of Muri to try and shield him as she swings!
Spear on Golem: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (5) + 19 = 24 damage: 1d8 + 20 - 10 ⇒ (4) + 20 - 10 = 14 (not adamantine)
Sadly, she misjudges her opponent and misses.

The golem strikes back, focusing on Kamari for a start.

Slam on Kamari: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (6) + 23 = 29 damage: 2d10 + 8 ⇒ (2, 6) + 8 = 16 grab: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17
Slam on Kamari: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (1) + 23 = 24 damage: 2d10 + 8 ⇒ (9, 3) + 8 = 20 grab: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29

The creature slashes at Kamari a bit hitting once, but fails to grapple. The clockwork golem seems to shudder a bit, or was that a shrug?

Kamari just misses twice, but does connect with the third blow. Elen dances in and hits as well, scattering further disks and wheels. Major Kort lands two more bolts - further chipping away at it. Muri plunks the creature twice, once nearly severing something vital. Edelmira also manages a pair of hits - and brings the mighty golem down!

Edelmira must have struck something important, for the whole creature shatters like a spring wound too tightly. Gears and pieces of metal go flying in all directions, harming those closest to the beast (Ohalia, Edelmira, Elen, & Kamari).

As the creature explodes, the doors open behind Major Kort and Kamari as three, uh, creatures, appear in the doorway, peering in at the battle. Two elongated and deathly pallid arms protrude from their smoky bodies as they slither silently through the air like apparitions of death.

Knowledge Planes DC 17:
You face Soul Eaters, NE Medium outsider (evil, extraplanar).

Summoned forth from the inky swamps of Abaddon, a soul eater is an extraplanar entity devoid of emotion or reason and possessing a hunger that may only be sated by devouring the souls of the living. The very nature of a soul eater makes it an ideal and terrifyingly efficient tool of death, and it is for this reason they are often conjured by vile spellcasters pursuing morbid agendas. Even when not seeing to the heinous commands of a sinister magic user, the soul eater prowls and hunts, constantly seeking living souls upon which to gorge itself.

DR 10/magic, so no big deal to the well equipped party. :)

Soul Drain (Su) If the Wisdom damage from a soul eater’s claw attacks equals or exceeds an opponent’s actual Wisdom score, rendering the victim helpless, the soul eater can devour that creature’s soul as a standard action that provokes an attack of opportunity. This attack kills the victim. The dead victim can resist having her soul eaten by making a (DC 17) Fortitude save; success means she is still dead, but can be restored to life normally. If she fails this save, her soul is consumed by the soul eater. A victim slain in this manner cannot be returned to life with clone, raise dead, or reincarnation. She can be restored to life via resurrection, true resurrection, miracle, or wish, but only if the caster can succeed on a DC 30 caster level check. If the soul eater is killed within 120 feet of its victim’s corpse, and the victim has been dead for no longer than 1 minute, the victim’s soul returns to her body and restores her to life, leaving her unconscious and at -1 hit point. This is a death effect.

Wisdom Damage (Su) A creature hit by a soul eater’s claw must succeed on a DC 17 Fortitude save or take 1d6 points of Wisdom damage.

Normally they work as a team, but these creatures seem bored by a mundane task, and so will likely fight over her.
