Pai conjures a blast of electricity, but the Heart-Taker narrowly ducks under it! Abaal tries to land a blow on his enemy, but the assassin bobs and weaves with uncanny speed.
Pai, it looks like the Heart-Taker gets soft cover from Abaal being between you and her, so that's why even your ranged touch attack just barely missed.
Grunyak, you're right--you were way out of the area for the burst.
| GM Jhaeman |
Suddenly, a stone decoration on a nearby rooftop seems to tip over. But instead of shattering on the ground, it somehow begins to move of its own accord. Leathery wings begin to flap as it skims over the rooftops and into the heart of the battle! The blood-red, horned creature extends its claws to grab the Heart-Taker. It starts to pump its wings, as if to carry her away!
This monster, whom we'll call the Scarlet Son, provokes attacks of opportunity from Abaal and Angoldir as it moves to pick up the Heart-Taker. Right now, it's right above her space.

Once Pai's turn comes around again, everyone can open the first spoiler. She'll shout out something to that effect then.

Dru finally gets up and smartly (hopefully!) throws a flask of gooey liquid on the flying creature, aiming at the wings
Tanglefoot bag vs Touch AC: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
oh no, you're staying here, buddy.. the party has just began!

Angoldir

Will vs DC 12: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
The darkness strikes the aged elf squarely in the chest, knocking the breath soundlessly out of him. As he reels from the sudden chill, his keen eyes spot the newcomer swooping in.
Knowledge (nature), Inspiration: 1d20 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (16) + 8 + (2) = 26
Recognizing his own weapon is of little help, Angoldir steps back and pulls a bottle from his belt. He gives it a shake before drinking the contents and sliding the now-empty flask into a different pocket. Lady of Fates, keep them both here just a little longer, he prays silently.
5 ft step and drink extract of adhesive spittle. Unfortunately, he won't be able to spit it back out until next round. Also unfortunately, he's within the area of silence and can't share what he learned about the new creature.
Yaiho Crasher
|
Seeing the enemy trying to flee, Yaiho rushes forward and leaps into the air as he swings his maul at anything within reach.
+1 Earth Breaker: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13;Darn, bad roll.
Damage: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (4, 1) + 8 = 13
Move: 10'
Standard: Attack
| GM Jhaeman |
Yaiho's massive maul swings in a wide arc, but connects only with air. Instants later, the Heart-Taker tries to stab the half-orc with her dagger that's still covered in Abaal's blood. Fortunately, the dagger's blade slides harmlessly off his armor.
Abaal and Angoldir, you were entitled to attacks of opportunity when the winged monster originally swooped in--did you want to take them?
Everyone, that's a good point raised above that I had overlooked above about the silence--you won't be able share what you've learned from identifying the winged monster. Everyone's going to have to rely on their own Knowledge skills!
Attack roll w/ P.A. & D.S.: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh
|
Not that it will matter. ;)
"...!" shouts Abaal in warning.
+1 adamantine falchion v flying thing (AOO, power attack, overhand chop): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24 damage: 2d4 + 16 ⇒ (2, 4) + 16 = 22
OMG! I didn't know that d20's went up to 14!
Grunyak

Grunyak continues his rush towards the battle. As he rounds the alley corner he focuses on his holy symbol praying for a hammer of force to appear. casts spiritual weapon. A shining glowing hammer apears beside the knife weilding heart taker and swings at him.

Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh
|
Quick correction to my post above. Overhand Chop doesn't work with AoO's (at least the way I normally would rule it) so the damage bonus should drop from +16 to +14 for a total of 20 if it hits.

Ah, this seems familiar. I was worried there for a second that my fighter might actually hit something. ;) No flanking bonus because Yaiho is not wearing stilts. ;)
The black blade makes a sound like **....** as it cuts through the air.
Pai Shecks

Pai's lips mouth the words: "Oh, for the love of Pete!" Everyone is in her way! Gosh darn it! Sidestepping north, she lines up a large blast of electricity at the flying creature.
Electric blast vs. Touch AC: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 1 = 182d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1, 5) + 2 + 1 = 9
Includes Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot
| GM Jhaeman |
The winged monstrosity dodges Abaal's blade. It takes the full force of Pai's electric blast right in the chest, but the attack seems to have absolutely no effect on the creature! It then flaps its bat-like wings several times and awkwardly lifts the Heart-Taker into the air before starting to fly north at rooftop level.
Abaal and Yaiho, you can take an attack of opportunity on either the Heart-Taker or the Scarlet Son (or both, if you have combat reflexes).
After the AoOs, I'll describe what happens next--things could go different ways depending on the results.
Yaiho Crasher
|
Looking to not let the flying creature escape with their target, Yaiho swings his mighty maul at the creature with all his might.
AoO +1 Earthbreaker vs Scarlet Son: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Damage: 2d8 + 8 ⇒ (1, 6) + 8 = 15
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh
|
The black blade sweeps soundlessly outward faster than the eye can trace as Abaal endeavors to separate the monster from its wings.
+1 adamantine falchion v flying thing (AoO, power attack): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28 damage: 2d4 + 14 ⇒ (2, 2) + 14 = 18
THREAT!
confirm?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 damage: 2d4 + 14 ⇒ (1, 4) + 14 = 19
| GM Jhaeman |
Although Yaiho's earthbreaker can't connect, Abaal's adamantine falchion certainly can! The scarlet-hued monster contorts in agony, releasing its hold on the Heart-Taker before awkwardly flapping into the air. It seems slowed by its wounds, and drips sizzling demonic blood on the rooftops it flies over.
Nice hit Abaal! The Scarlet Son is at exactly 0 hit points, so it is disabled and can only take one action a round without losing a hit point and falling unconscious. It is now flying 15' off the ground and headed north, but is still pretty speedy (80' fly speed). It's still on the grid for now, so you might be able to do a ranged attack, but even if it escapes this scene, it's moving slowly enough you'll be able to keep it in sight and follow it wherever it's going if you want to--but first, there's still the Heart-Taker to deal with!
Angoldir
|
Angoldir sighs silently as the winged monster flies away. Perhaps someone else can neutralize it - but it is not me, and there are more productive things I can do. He looks at the woman still between Abaal and Yaiho, then spits a viscous green fluid from his mouth at her that begins to harden almost immediately. Stepping forward, he tries to distract her with a gentle tap of his sword-cane on the side while nodding at Yaiho.
Sword-Cane to Aid vs AC 10: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
The stress of the second creature escaping is too distracting, and the investigator strikes only air.
Standard to use adhesive spittle (Reflex 15, behaves like a tanglefoot bag), 5 ft step, Move action to Aid (but fails).
Yaiho Crasher
|
Remembering that he was instructed to take the killer alive, Yaiho strikes out with his maul but pulls slightly enough not to cause a killing blow.
+1 Earthbreaker (-NL attack): 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 10 - 4 = 19
Non-Lethal Damage: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (3, 4) + 8 = 15
Angoldir
|
The Heart-Taker leaps over the viscous fluid, and now Angoldir has gained her attention!
To clarify - she is still penalized as if hit by a tanglefoot bag (-2 to attack rolls, -4 Dex) - she is just not stuck to the ground. The effect lasts for 2d4 rounds, but I would assume the GM would roll the duration as Angoldir would not know how long it would last.
| GM Jhaeman |
The Heart-Taker grins evilly as she once again unleashes a wave of pure, hateful energy drawn directly from a plane of unbeing!
She is channelling again. Everyone within 30' needs to make a DC 12 Will save. If you make the save, you take 4 damage. If you fail the save, you take 9 damage.
Channel: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 4) = 9

Grunyak's force hammer continues to attack the heart taker.

Pai Shecks

It takes the full force of Pai's electric blast right in the chest, but the attack seems to have absolutely no effect on the creature!
Pai silently shouts: "What?! What the--Oh nooo!" There was only one other time that she had to fight a creature that wasn't harmed by electricity, and that situation was way more favorable than this! But I can't kill the woman or she can't talk! Aaaargh!
Second guessing her senses and panicking, Pai darts after the fleeing flying foe and tries to blast it again. JUST TO BE SURE!
Electric blast vs. Touch AC: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 1 = 262d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6, 4) + 2 + 2 = 14
Pai takes 1 point of Burn to use the Extended range infusion, bringing her range to 120'. This roll includes Elemental Overflow bonus.
Abaal Zadeir, Sword of Katapesh

Abaal points at the fleeing demon and shouts "....!"
{Grits teeth}
+1 adamantine falchion v silent assassin (flank, overhand chop, power attack): 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 10 + 2 = 24 damage: 2d4 + 16 ⇒ (1, 2) + 16 = 19

Wow. My apologies. Her bonus for Will is +2, so with a roll of 14 she makes it. I did take off the half damage from her HP already.
| GM Jhaeman |
No worries, thanks Pai.
It looks like the site ate the post where I rolled a stabilization check for the Scarlet Son (it failed and lost a hp) and then told folks whose turn was next--I'll try it again below.
Initiative (Round 3)
Pai
Abaal
The Scarlet Son (unconscious)
Angoldir
Drusilla
Yaiho
Heart-Taker
Grunyak
Bold may go!
Angoldir

Will vs DC 12: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Angoldir steels his mind against the second wave of darkness, pushing past the worst of the sudden chill that grips his soul. Determinedly, he silently taps the woman with his cane again to assist his allies - first Yaiho, then Abaal.
Sword Cane to Aid vs AC 10: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Sword Cane to Aid vs AC 10: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Using Effortless Aid to Aid Another as a move action, then standard action to Aid to grant +4 bonus to both Yaiho and Abaal's next attacks against Heart-Taker.
Also, nice shot Pai!
Drusilla the Spear-Maiden

At work, can't access the map, so if I can flank the Heartcutter move me and add+2 to hit
Dru moves toward the dagger wielding serial killer, and delivers a powerful smack on its head with her weapon
+1 Morningstar, Weapon focus ,Power attack, potential flank: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 9 - 2 = 26
dmg: 1d8 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 4 = 14
"Good Morning sunshine...", but instead of "rise and shine", I'll say "fall and stay down.". I hope you appreciate the humor, for a killer that strikes at dawn, to get fell, or at least hit, by a morningstar. I personnaly appreciate the irony.
| GM Jhaeman |
Drusilla strides into the fray and, with a single swing of her morningstar, bashes the Heart-Taker into unconsciousness!
Good work guys! It's not easy to take down both of them in the same fight.
Assume the silence effect wears off just a few seconds after the Heart-Taker is knocked to the ground.
Because of the earlier nonlethal damage, the Heart-Taker is unconscious but has positive hit points and is stable. If you don't do anything, you figure she'll wake up in about an hour.
We can go off Initiative. If anyone wants to do anything to save the flying fiendish gargoyle, let me know or I'll roll to see if it naturally stabilizes or dies.
Drusilla the Spear-Maiden

That was a good line, I thought, delivered on the spurs of the moment. While you secure that one, two of us should try to find the winged fiend and be sure it's not a threat anymore. I'm in for the hunt.
