You take off the next morning, feeling refreshed. The glow of the small sphere orbiting the top of the Wellspring Tower is visible from miles away, but even at that distance it is obvious that something is wrong. The glow is unsteady; dimming to a dull brown every few seconds.

The tower itself is an imposing structure. A mudbrick-stepped pyramid with four tiers and steep sides, it is clearly many thousands of years old. Two platforms protrude from its base and have ladders leaning against them from the ground. From the northern platform climbs a series of narrow steps all the way to a terrace balcony just below the first tier, some 150 feet up, where a great, cavernous doorway enters the tower’s interior. The entire tower appears to be covered in a network of fine cracks—these are actually dead, brittle vines that must have covered nearly the entire structure in a carpet of greenery. Like the dead creepers that cover the tower’s surface, the land around it for miles is likewise sere and lifeless. A dry watercourse extends from the base of the tower where there must have once been a babbling stream.

How do you approach the Tower? You can either be descriptive or mechanically list your exploration activity.

Rova keeps her eyes open as she approaches, taking in the sights. As she gets close, she indicates Thkrull should probably stay there -- he grumbles in response -- since he's not likely to make his way up the ladders.

She has her bow out, just in case, but isn't expecting any demons, or xulgaths, or anything else.

Kennari is fascinated, not thinking to prepare for trouble as he directs all his attention to the tower. When his eyes reach the dimmed orb, his expression changes from wonder to a frown. "That doesn't seem right." If you'll allow it on something that big, Kennari will spend a minute staring at the orb, designating it as his lead to pursue. Investigating as exploration activity.

As you get closer to the Tower, about a quarter of a mile away, you can start to make out xulgaths clustered around the tower as well as on the ledges. It looks like they also see your approach.

Rova, investigating the area, suddenly spots signs that the xulgaths have booby-trapped the area around the tower. It's a minefield!

The minefield takes up the area in a ring from 100 to 200 feet around the tower. With people investigating and searching, like you have, it's a DC 15 flat check to not encounter a mine as you walk through. However, if you have a clever way to avoid them, let me know!

"Hm." Kennari frowns. "I can render our passage safe for some of that distance, but I'm afraid the range of my spell won't cover the whole passage." Kennari has safe passage prepped, but it only extends 60 feet. Would that at least lower the flat check?

Sorry, I messed up the flat check! It would be a DC 10 normally, and it should be a DC 5 because of all the Searching and Investigating. Unfortunately, it is a flat check rather than a Perception check. Safe passage is such an appropriate spell, though, that with Rova's earlier Perception check to spot the minefield, I'll say that you can find a place to cast it that covers the most mine-ridden part.

With fire resistance 5 from the spell, you can walk through the minefield safely!

Rova is pretty sure that the xulgaths will just wait at the tower for you to come to them. They seem to be camping there.

I'll pick up the battle after you have crossed the minefield, so ~100 ft from the tower. Is there any pre-buffing or anything that people will do before then?

No worries, Prism, it's kind of a weird setup. I think it's one of those places where it shows that we didn't actually have access to the final 2e rules while writing this AP!

Ghost Level Delve || Extinction Curse

You race across the minefield, protected by Kennari's spell. The xulgaths seem surprised as you don't trip any of their minds. The four on the ground pull out swords and spears as you approach, while one of the four on the first level of the tower pulls up the ladder leading to it.

They are doing this while you cross the minefield.

The banked embers of a fire mark a shallow pit near the base of the tower. The ground is bare save for a few wisps of dried grass from the lush carpet that must have covered this area not long ago. Five nest-like hollows have been lined with hides, shiny rocks, scales, and assorted odds and ends. The entire area is suffused with a nauseating stench.

The area between the base of the tower and its two lower platforms forms a low natural basin, the bottom of which is dry, cracked earth with the remains of various stunted grasses. The dusty stream bed exits this basin on the east side. A small hollow leads into the aeon tower, apparently the point from which a spring once issued.

Climbing the side of the tower is a DC 30 Athletics check. Nothing special to cross the stream bed.

Seeing the alchemists, Kennari decides to separate from the pack a little bit, then points his staff and hurls a bead of fire from the tip, which explodes in a blinding ball of fire at the top of the tower!

Niksi heals more of Unset's wounds, making certain that he stay in the fight.

Red, badly injured, fights on, inching around Unset toward Prism, but then swinging at Unset at the last minute.
