My most recent IC post was about "ascending to get a bird's eye view", so I'm probably pretty significantly up in the air. I didn't think to quantify it at the time.
So I would need to balance that against any actions or comments you make based on what you could see. You haven't played in my games before (I don't think) so you wouldn't know that I don't drop 'gotcha' moments on the PCs to screw them over. Not maliciously, anyway. Sometimes players miss things or the situation creates surprises. I try to create 'ah s%$t' moments, not 'we're dead' moments, if that makes sense.

Old Guy GM |

I thought I posted what Lym would know, but I don't see it. This is a frost worm, a rare beast, and the apex predator in this part of the world. It radiates a deadly cold, and is susceptible to fire.
Thordak, 27 damage, PCs always round in their favor.
The worm thrashes about in agony, it's massive bulk throwing stones about and crushing the gravestones under it. The fog is spread about by the beast's throes, creating fountains of thick gray mist in the air.
A deep voice booms out from nowhere - and everywhere - in the dell on the ledge.
"BY THE GODS, WHO DISTURBS MY REST??? SILAS, IS THAT YOU?"
A translucent figure bursts upward on a column of mist. This can only be Karivek, as you recognize him from the picture in the cabin. In death, his mouth is filled with fangs and drips streamers of blood that fade away to a frosty mist before striking the ground. A deadly cold surrounds him. His voice carries all of the pain, guilt, and fear he had with him when he died. The full weight of it washes over you: it would be better to be anywhere but here.
ROUND TWO. Karivek has gone. Thordak, then the worm, then the rest.

Sorry, got crazy busy at the end of the week.
ROUND TWO cont'd
Rexil's club bounces harmlessly off of the frost worm's tough hide.
Lym's Fireball engulfs the worm's head and upper torso. The smell of burnt flesh and chitin fills the ledge. The worm thrashes about violently in its death throes, its bulk rolling and curling along the ground. Suddenly it stops, quivers for a moment, and then explodes!

ROUND THREE
Karivek's ghostly form weathers the explosion of the worm without damage. He emerges from the cloud of frost and gore screaming in rage.
"NOOOOOOOOO! Ye killed me worm!"
Karivek thrusts an arm at Praxim. A wall of invisible force slams into the paladin, forcing him over the ledge! The spectral miner's grin of triumph fades quickly as he realizes the paladin is not walking in the mist, but is actually flying.
So much for cool ghostly tactics. Well done with the flying/air walking corp! ROUND THREE cont'd, all of you are up. Karivek is hovering 10' off of the ground in the center of the ledge. He is a move action from Thordak and Rexil. Let me know where you are going to be in relation to him.

Karivek takes the blows from arrows, clubs, and spells in stride. He only pauses for a second when Thordak mentions Silas' name.
"My brother...my brother...Silas... He says quietly, casting his eyes about the dell. His gaze falls on the gravestone of his brother, and a state of peace falls over his face.
At that moment, a palpable sense of something evil enters the dell. More a force than an entity, you all can feel the power of the darkness fill the area.
Then Karivek explodes with rage. "My brother was weak! He would starve when the answer was right in front of us! Only the strong survive!"

Far off, the evil howl echoes through the mountains, stronger than ever. Something out there is not pleased. Karivek's body lies at your feet.

Thordak Ironheart |

As Thordak's rage subsides, he looks upon the snowy land and can only shake his head. "Stupid dwarf. Too busy blamin' everyone else for his problems," he mutters, harrumphing. Thordak bends down and picks the bones of Karivek back up before starting on his way back. "Let's go, lot! Best be out of here before he comes back. If we know anythin' about spirits it's that there ain't no weapon gonna kill 'em."
