Careless RP: If anyone wants to use the rope/grappling hook to make it across, speak up. He would totally throw it back to you. I didn't think about that when I made the post and he is all about the survival of the team!

That "plank" is going to be pretty hard to maneuver!

It's 3' wide by 12' long, and thick enough to be able to walk across (and not just by small kobolds!). Assuming 1.5" to 2" thick it's probably going to weigh getting on for two hundred pounds. Dragging it to the edge of the pit is reasonably straightforward, but trying to get the far end positioned without dropping everything into the pit could present quite a challenge ...

All very valid points in the real world (even getting it through the halls, which are 3-10' wide and high, would be difficult for a group of people to work with, let alone 1.)

The way it's presented in the scenario is that it's meant to be used to cross the pit so, though it might break immersion, I'm going to say you can just put it in place without any checks.

How have you guys handled the rituals around the fake city? I feel like they're one of the coolest parts of this scenario but you practically have to have read the scenario to know how to get them to work. I don't want to give out too many clues, but I also don't want to not give out enough information for people to reasonably be able to figure them out.

Over the couple of times I've run this with first timers, one of two things happened:

  • Players 100% ignored the fake city. I read the description for the room, they were like ok cool, spoke to the Gillman, then left on their merry way. They missed the knowledge check about Aroden and thus the possible connection between him and Absalom.
  • Players got a couple of the rituals. Obviously I've no data or anything, but I found making a bigger deal of the city, making it clear you aren't offending the Gillman by getting into the water in the middle of a prayer (probably a cultural thing on the players' end), and/or giving the check to identify it as Absalom without being close.

    After people have done it twice, I don't think I've ever been a player or GM when the players didn't get all the rituals (clearly because they know the gimmick). There is always the chance though that people miss the clues, and that's ok. A GM can only drop so many hints! Once you know everything, it is crystal clear this was a former place of worship, but sometimes when you receive it piece-meal/are in the moment the obvious parts don't add up to something meaningful (which was the case with me! I was like "huh, weird cave").

    Based on what you've presented us (which I know is the box text), next time around I'd consider mentioning that some of the trinkets and coins seem really old and some new. At least to me, that'd give the impression that someone has messed with it before, maybe I should too. Making sure your Aroden information dump includes something about the Starstone too would also help in connecting the dots (since right now it takes meta-knowledge to bridge that gap). To be fair though, IMO adventurers should be curious and therefore naturally inclined to investigate.

    I have also had left over 'residue' from other rituals that have left their mark on the model, usually coupled with a perception check to notice. "It looks like some of the buildings have been smeared in the past, but it does not seem like vandalism." or other clue.
