You see a small reptilian creature, a blue kobold, in fact. She holds some sort of smoking vial in her hand, ready to toss it at you.
"I'll give you one chance. Surrender and we will let you live. You'll become workers in the mines, of course. But that's your only option!"

Ash blinks and blurts incredulously, "We came through a weird portal, and every step we take we get attacked by a crazy monkey man, a building, or a demon. I didn't even know you were mining!"

He then stalks towards the kobold, and snaps his fingers in the gauntlet. Flames burst around the kobold he's looking at, and around Orange behind him.

The group sneaks right up to the edge of the clearing, seemingly without alerting anyone of their presence.
You're currently in the trees to the east, just behind the building that the kobold came out of. To the north is a huge pile of dirt and rock. To the south, you see the "hospital" area. You're closer to the pit than you were before, and inside the pit you can just barely see the top of a dragon tower, with some small creatures flying around the top of it.

Abalyn recognizes the small, snake-like creatures flying around the top of the tower as Voidworms. They're tiny protean outsiders from the plane of chaos. She knows that they have some magical spellcasting abilities, as well as the ability to confuse creatures with a touch.
In addition, you see many boggards and charau-ka moving up and down a long, winding ramp that leads down into the pit carrying bags and boxes of dirt and stone, and can hear the clang of pickaxes hitting stone at the bottom.

Hawk casts guidance on himself then steps to the edge of the forest and calls out.
"Pardon the interruption, but we are going to have to ask you to cease the activities you are engaged in, lay down any tools or weapons you have and either surrender or disperse. We'd rather avoid any unnecessary bloodshed, but we can't allow you to continue doing what you are doing. Those of you wishing to surrender, please form an orderly line to my left. Any of you attempting to resist us will be met with... well our resistance of you resisting us."

A silence falls over the clearing as Hawk's words flow over the area. The cultists that you can see all stare blankly at Hawk for a moment.

One of the charau-ka in the pit barks out an order, and some of the cultists seem to return to their work, but a group of them grab weapons and charge up the ramp, trying to make their way toward you! The three charau-ka with red around them in the pit are heading up to meet you in battle.
You also hear one of the boggards down near the sick beds yell something into the structure next to them.
