The Midnight Mirror

Apologies for forgetting to mention - I was at GeekGirlCon demoing pathfinder this past weekend, which is why I didn't post.

I will be attending BoardGameGeek Con starting tomorrow, so I will be checking in at most at breakfast and just before bed (Central USA time) through Sunday.

No worries, I also have been at a con (Contraflow, in the South) this past weekend so I get that. Should be getting back to regular posting this week now that that's wrapped up.

Thanks for bearing with me during my vacation! I had a great time, and now I'm back at work. Once I get caught up with what I missed here I'll get back into the usual rhythm of game posting.

    The Midnight Mirror

With US Thanksgiving this week, I won't be pushing hard on games I am GMing. I'm not travelling, so I expect to check in regularly, but I know others might not be able to. As posts happen that merit a response I will post, but I may wait until a few people have posted before chiming in.

If it makes Bellamin feel any better, I had a new player at an IRL Absalom Initiation table I was running succeed at the Medicine check only to immediately roll snake eyes on the amount healed this past weekend. That session was cursed with roughly 40% of all rolls somehow being a 2.

Oof. I had a session with my 1e Gunslinger last Saturday and rolled a hideous amount of nat 1s. The crowning moment came when the nearly dead boss was getting ready to throw one of the party into an infinite abyss, and I rolled a nat 1 with max damage. He also has enough levels in Inquisitor to have the Luck Domain's Good Fortune ability, so I decided to reroll it.

Another nat 1. 3rd misfire of that fight. I was not thrilled!

@GM Rinaldo: This is why all of my Medicine characters are taking Assurance: Medicine by level 3. Auto succeeding Treat Wounds is amazing. Heck, my -2001 character qualified for Tapestry Refugee legacy background, and in addition to being an excellent background that allows for basically any story you could ever imagine, it also gives Assurance Medicine as your background feat which is nuts.

OH wow, I'll have to look at that. I am pretty sure I qualify for that legacy.

One 1e game I kept missig touch attacks with my alchemist. I needed natural 5s to hit, and probably missed 6 of 8. I did more accidental splash damage to my allies than to enemies.

So the BBEG fight is going well despite me crit failing an attack (I convinced the GM to let me direct hit myself rather than splash anyone else). The BBEG is down to a few HP and will definitely go down if I hit a sub-10 touch AC with my +6 attack, and may even go down with just splash damage. But there's an unconscious character who might die (like die die) if I miss, and given how the session is going, my party begs me not to take the chance.

I offer a solution - I will target a square corner, which is AC 5, and hope that the splash alone will drop the BBEG, and on a miss, can't splash into the unconscious character's square.

The GM, in the name of fun, confirms that my splash damage will end evil in the world forever. All I needed was to roll a 2 or higher!

    Spoiler:
    Natural ****ing 20.

The GM observes, "The only thing you critted this session was the ground."

My suggestion is that we set the statue down on top of him.

Also, I keep mistyping it as "statute" which is definitely one way of throwing the book at somebody.

I don't remember if this was addressed earlier or not, but did you give the OK for my refocus on the last wave of exploration, or am I still running around with no focus pool? Either way is fine, it will mostly just be important for determining how big Klatzu's sword can get.

    The Midnight Mirror

Looking back, I did not see you spend any of the investigation rounds refocusing, and I had said No to refocusing while travelling from the town to the college, due to needing to be on guard for trouble.

    Envoy's Alliance

    M Goblin Champion/Cavalier 8 | HP 104/114 | Shield Hardness 10, HP 94/96| AC29/s31 | Frt15 - Ref11 - Wil13 | Perc11, +2 Init, Darkvision | Spe20 | Conditions: None

I'm specifically asking about this from the last set of 2 explores:

    Spoiler:

    Klatzu wrote:
If allowed with the incredibly vague rules of the Refocus action, Klatzu would like to spend at least one session patching up whoever in the party has the least hit points, excluding himself (+5 medicine) while loudly coming up with ideas about how to optimize he and his patient’s combat effectiveness the next time they are caught in an ambush as a means of refocusing, if that comes close enough to extolling the ideology of Gorum. I will roleplay it out later if desired by the GM, but I can guarantee that at least one of his lines will be “Klatzu think next time, we strike first! Klatzu learn never trust top walls! In enemy territory, Klatzu need attack top-walls before strike first!”

    And the vagueries of Refocus:

    Refocus rules:

    Refocus wrote:

You spend 10 minutes performing deeds to restore your magical connection. This restores 1 Focus Point to your focus pool. The deeds you need to perform are specified in the class or ability that gives you your focus spells. These deeds can usually overlap with other tasks that relate to the source of your focus spells. For instance, a cleric with focus spells from a good deity can usually Refocus while tending the wounds of their allies, and a wizard of the illusionist school might be able to Refocus while attempting to Identify Magic of the illusion school.[/refocus]

And how they interact with cleric refocusing for weirdos who worship Gorum.

Gorum is a weird case here as evidenced below::

    Domain initiate wrote:
...and you can regain 1 Focus Point by spending 10 minutes using the Refocus activity to pray to your deity or do service toward their causes.
    Gorum wrote:

Soldiers call out prayers to Our Lord in Iron, god of battle, strength, and weapons. Gorum emphasizes strength and power, encouraging his followers to seek out war and combat as the ultimate way to worship him.

Edicts: attain victory in fair combat, push your limits, wear armor in combat

It's possible this might just need a forum question as to what are good examples of multitasking with Gorumite refocusing; if you just want to rule it as "spend ten minutes refocusing only" to get the bonus for now then that's fine too, Gorum is weird for this considering how broad his edicts can be.

    The Midnight Mirror

Yeah, I'm going to kick this one upstairs. Without some guidance on it, I'm going to be fairly limited on what activities can overlap "things that benefit me otherwise" with "things that let me refocus", because otherwise we get into a system of "god-shopping" to get better benefits than other gods.

    Envoy's Alliance

    M Goblin Champion/Cavalier 8 | HP 104/114 | Shield Hardness 10, HP 94/96| AC29/s31 | Frt15 - Ref11 - Wil13 | Perc11, +2 Init, Darkvision | Spe20 | Conditions: None

Fair enough. That said I wonder how many people are gonna pick healing gods in PFS just because they decided to make that one unambiguous. Maybe one day Paizo will actually give us a list of good examples for refocusing exploits in the future.

    Radiant Oath

I would start with this rule: it's supposed to take 10 minutes. If you can do something else while refocusing, it should be a one-time situational thing, not something that you can do all the time anywhere.

Refocusing while healing seems really general. Proof by counterexample: if Klatzu needed to repair his greatsword, I think refocusing while repairing your god's favored weapon is fine.

Wow. I swear when I read that post I saw "6" damage. No idea what happened there.

The five additional damage is enough that the skeleton would have dropped. Hiro would not have to have attacked it, and therefore can retcon his turn. Bellona's action to shoot the necromancer would not have changed, nor would Bellamin's grapple.

I will spend my downtime for this session Crafting a Mace using Junk Tinker. Base cost is 1g, but junk tinker will quarter that to 2.5sp making the raw materials cost 1.25 sp. I’ll spend 4 days crafting it to make the Crafting Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 check, and assuming I can hit a 14, I’ll spend one extra day as required to ignore the rest of the crafting cost; if I fail I’ll give it another try for the remaining 4 days. I’ll spend any extra days after doing Earn Income using Warfare Lore to help direct Pathfinder efforts in and around the Gravelands Dayjob Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Did you know that Day Job check results were for each day spent on the task? It's gonna be even sicker when Emdi hits level 2 and picks up dancing lights with a bard dedication!

On a different note, what are the rules around retraining at level 1? Can I do it for free or do I need to give up downtime or pay money or I just can't? Can I retrain ancestry feats? Class feats? Any feats?

I'm not particularly happy with the Splash of Art spell. I already knew it was kind of weak when I took it but I didn't realize I had only 1 Focus Point and I didn't realize it was 2 actions. I also didn't realize that LOCG had some other options (like I can pick up Gloomseer as a Nidalese human). And then when I attempted to use it on the necromancer I realized there's a super high probability of the spell having a totally useless effect (I would have Enfeebled a spellcaster).
