The Confirmation | Oathbreakers Die

Kyunjiro stumbles a little over a chair, causing his attack to swing wide.

This creature looks unnerved by Ifzari's threat causing it to be shaken for 2 rounds.

Dhavak slams into the creature twice, causing it to let out an unnatural shriek.

GM screen:
Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Miserable for one round
Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

The first slam makes the creature look awful.

"Immy" then locks eyes on the humans and half-humans in the room. It steps up to Souja and lashes out with long, thin claws.

Davor throws a chakram, but it veers wildly off course.

Be quiet, Ramyla. We are the Guardians of the Open Road. We don't want to hurt you. This thing was here to kill you. But now it's over for it. We want to save Timinic from the Ghostknives's claws. The fight is over almost before it began, and Tazra blinks dumbly as the corpse falls to the floor. That was...unexpected.

Seeing Ramyla cowering behind the bar, she tries to reassure her. "It's fine. We killed it. Whatever it was. Actually, do you know what it was? Because I feel like I should know, but I don't, and it's bugging the hell out of me."

Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Needless to say, Tazra is not particularly reassuring. Realizing that, she slinks off to another corner and lets others do the talking. If that thing had hit me, I'd be dead. And I'm pretty easy to hit right now. I should probably fix that.

While the others talk, she pulls some chemicals out of her bag and starts mixing them, occasionally referring to a small notebook.

It was a doppelganger, a master of shapeshifting and disguise that can also read the surface of people's minds undetected.

Ifzari finds that the creature was fumbling with a potion labeled invisibility when it was struck down. On this corpse, the undine also finds another packet of powder labeled "dark reaver", the matching pearl earring, and some money.

Ramyla cautiously comes out from under the bar. "I don't know what that thing was, but I'm glad it's dead. I KNEW Timinic was in trouble... He sent me a very vague message saying he was safe, didn't know exactly where he was, but..." Ramyla gives the vague description of the gnome's surroundings and safe house. You're able to use this to confirm the location you received in Brandur's cottage.

"I may not know much of what's going on, but I am a barmaid, so I hear plenty. I'll answer whatever questions I can as thanks for saving my life."

Souja kicks the corpse lightly to make sure it's dead, and scowls. After a moment, she looks to Ramyla. "It mentioned the Ghostknives. Do you have any idea who they are?" she asks, now that the monster that was making a fool of them was killed. With a second thought, she adds directed to the others, "Maybe the late Venture-Captain had some notes on them. They tend to acquire odd bits of information."

Feeling a bit better with an extract of shield in her pouch, Tazra rejoins the conversation. "I don't remember seeing anything about 'Ghostknives' in his notes. Although if they're killing people and they're not part of the assassin's guild, which it doesn't sound like they are..." She thinks for a second, pulling out her journal to double-check her notes. "Bosk's notes did mention investigations into a murderer named Cladara. It didn't sound like she was part of the assassin's guild; she wouldn't be being investigated if she was. Maybe she's also one of these Ghostknives. We should keep an ear out for that name too."

She turns to Ramyla. "Does any of this sound familiar to you? If not, we should probably go find Timinic and make sure he's safe. I'd recommend going home and locking your doors. We can escort you there, just in case." A thought strikes her as she looks at the body on the floor. "I don't suppose you know where Immy lives, do you? The real one, I mean."

The creature killed Brandur before using his guise; it's possible it did the same to Immy. We should check on her if we can.

"Also, we should, uh, probably do something about that." She points to the body. "This is Daggermark after all; is there some sort of corpse-disposal guild too? Or an authority we should talk to about an unauthorized assassination attempt?"

Potions can be identified a couple of ways Davor. ;) But better safe than sorry.

Ramyla takes in the questions as they're asked, but anyone watching her face can see her expression of fear and surprise at the late venture-captain remark. "Pardon me for asking, but.. h-how did the Venture-Captain pass? He was always so careful.."

"As for the Ghostknives.. no, I've never heard of them. There's only the Assassin's guild and the Poisoner's guild here in Daggermark. Whoever they are must be operating on their own accord. And I've never heard the name Cladara. I hope you can find Timinic, we had developed a close friendship between us when he was working on mapping the sewers, and I've been worried sick since he went into hiding."

"We could let the military know, and they would open their own investigation, or we could let the Assassin's guild know what's going on, but I fear I don't know who we could trust, as it sounds like this Ghostknives organization may have branched off from the Assassin's guild.. I would talk to Pemak. She always knows what's going on in Daggermark, and I'm fairly sure she's part of the Poisoner's guild. I can give you directions if you'd like."

"As for Immy... I don't know where she lives. I can get home safe, and after you all have sorted this out and know who to trust, I'm sure a trusted military member could investigate and find Immy."

You have enough information to check on Timinic and to find Pemak. All you know of the Ghostknives is the name, and that they may be related to or detached from the assassin's guild, but that's on the hunch of a simple barmaid. Ramyla has offered to take care of everything at the distillery including the corpse of the creature so long as you continue to investigate and find out who can be trusted. Do you check on Timinic first, or head for Pemak? Timinic's Safe House is 40 minutes away from the distillery, and Pemak's Tinctures is 15 minutes away. It's a 30 minute travel between Timinic's Safe House and Pemak's Tinctures.

Onward!

A wooden sign depicting a flask of blue liquid hangs over the door of this cramped building. A faint aroma of burning vinegar wafts from the windows, which remain open despite the sleet. Hidden among some ramshackle tenements, Pemak's Tinctures provides alchemical remedies at prices the locals can afford. The owner sometimes prepares custom medicines for no charge, earning her a place of honor among Daggermark's destitute. This is the information you've gathered between Ramyla and your eavesdropping en-route between destinations.

Through the window an urbane half-orc with a toothy smile can be seen, and you can easily tell she sees you standing outside. Through the window, you can see that this appears on all accounts to be a typical alchemist's shop.

"You're not from around here, and yet you know the language... Interesting. Well, we can dispose of the pleasantries and the codes then, so long as you all come inside and shut the door." Pemak motions them inside, opens a chimney flue, and closes the window. "And your remark on the odor concerns me greatly. It's from a project I've been working on, but it's nowhere near ready, and my early recipie was stolen. I haven't been able to investigate myself, but my sources say the thief or thieves are involved with something suspicious near the Dripping Wall Distillery."

The smile on the half-orc sours to a stern grimace.

"So, what is it you wish to know? You've clearly not come here to procure any of my services, storefront or not. And what is it you think you know of me?"

Tazra:
Pemak seems every bit a business owner protecting their interests and is honest about the recipe being stolen as well as not ready to be used yet.

If you wish to describe in better detail the toxicology involved in Bosk or Brandur's poisonings, you must roll a craft (alchemy) or heal check to see if you can impress Pemak.

So the recipe was stolen, unless she's a very good liar. Probably not connected to the Ghostknives then, and she likely was actually a target. Which means she might be our best chance of figuring out what's going on.

Tazra is self-aware enough to know that there's more than a hint of bias in her assessment. Pemak is a half-orc alchemist who's intelligent, practical, and apparently offers free medicine to the poor.

She might just be a little in love.

But biased or not, if they want assistance they'll have to trust Pemak enough to tell her what's going on. Unlike Ramyla, a member of the Poisoner's Guild is unlikely to be upset by the details.

Craft Alchemy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

"Very well then, straight talk. Venture-Captain Bosk was poisoned with the concoction I mentioned earlier, seemingly by his good friend Brandur Clovesh. A potion of delay poison, and it definitely was delay poison, only hastened his death. Something in the poison reacted with the potion to create a quick-acting foam that suffocated him."

"Tracking the assassin to Brandur's house, we found Brandur dead as well. Same poison, same circumstances. We deduced that the assassin was actually a shapechanger of some sort, taking on the appearance of a friend to get close to their victim. Fortunately they were sloppy, and left a note listing their targets. Ramyla of the Dripping Wall Distillery was named in that note. As were you." Tazra deliberately doesn't mention Timinic. Just in case.

"We stopped by the Distillery first and found the assassin there, poising as a customer. We stopped them before they could kill Ramyla. They mentioned something about the 'Ghostknives' as they fell."

Tazra leans forward. "So what we want from you is information. You're well-connected; have you heard anything about these Ghostknives? They're clearly not part of the assassin's guild. If we want to make sure Ramyla is safe, not to mention yourself, we have to do something about the whole group. Not just one sloppy shapeshifter."

She seems to be a victim, as Bosk and Brandur. Ramyla had to be one as well. And Timinic remains on the list as well. Did the assassin operate alone or are there many of his kind lurking in the shadows?

"Yep, that's definitely the result of my project. Whoever stole it wanted to make sure the venture captain was dead.

Brandur.." Pemak looks legitimately troubled. "He was a fine example of Daggermark's military. He was cousin to Jallor Clovesh, Daggermark's top infantry commander. This will not sit well in the city. Neither of these would have been sanctioned by the Assasin's Guild, and there's whispers of a cabal of Guild defectors operating in the sewers."

"It is unsurprising that I'm on this list, as I'm sure the people who have my recipe wouldn't want to incur the wrath of either guild for stealing a member of the Poisoner's Guild intellectual property."

"As for the shapeshifter... did they take the form of a curly-haired woman named Immy?" Assuming someone gives the affirmative, "That bastard Ilchok... laziest doppleganger I've ever seen. He enrolled in the Daggermark Assasin's Guild a year ago, but never covered his tracks properly after a kill, only relying on his shapeshifting to avoid consequence after completing a contract. In the end, he was expelled, as his talents didn't merit that level of sloppiness. I heard he joined with the cabal of defectors, which must be these Ghostknives you've mentioned."

The toothy smile returns to the half-orc, and she claps her hands together. "This Ghostkife problem will be a huge ordeal for the city to deal with. It will cause much strife and many more are likely to die. HOWEVER! You lot have already proven yourselves effective against these insurgents. I propose an offer. I think we can both agree that this is a problem of utmost importance. If you can take out this cabal before they can go into hiding, I can promise the support of the Poisoner's Guild in rebuilding the Dryblade House if the Pathfinders wish to continue operations out of Daggermark. I can even use my contacts to gain the support of the Assassin's Guild. Heck, eliminating this threat would qualify you lot for membership in the Poisoner's Guild. If you accept, I'll tell you exactly where to find them so long as you take them out. Although if Brandur is dead, you may want to check on the Pathfinder Timinic first. My information relies on his maps. I have information on him as well, though I'd wager you already know all that I do." She gives a wink. She's clearly impressed with the Pathfinder Society's investigative abilities so far.

Do you accept this information at the price of eliminating the Ghostknives? If so, do you check on Timinic first, or save that for later?

Where can we find these Ghostknives? They will be soon only ghosts in passed dreams.

The undine is determined as usual. The evil must die.

"The Ghostknives are a problem to us all, it seems. We will fix it as best it helps." Davor approximates a smile. "It may do to check on our own Timinic first, and see what you have gleaned of him. We cannot know your information is redundant until hearing it."

"Your offer is exceedingly generous, particularly since we need to take out the Ghostknives anyway. If you know where in the sewers they're lurking, that saves us some time. I see no reason not to accept." Tazra grins. "We do have information on Timinic, although I can't guarantee it's the same as what you have. Regardless I agree that we should check on him first."

"Timinic's safety is the main thing that the late Venture-Captain wanted us to ensure. We really need to check up on him," Souja adds, not the happiest to broker deals with poisons and assassins. "Then we end these Ghostknives."

Pemak ponders for a moment at Davor. "While I'm sure you already know this, information is valuable... but I like you lot. So I'll tell you, at least what you need to know. I know Bosk and Clovesh got into some sticky business putting Timinic into hiding. Brandur was the one keeping a stream of supplies and information to Timinic, and was in charge of keeping the safe house.. well, safe. I don't know the particulars of how Bosk and Clovesh got involved, but I'd wager Timinic got a little too close to the cabal's hideout with his mapping efforts. Timinic was going to stay there until some friends could help him get out of Daggermark." You get a strong feeling you were originally summoned as those "friends."

"Now, off with you! Check on your friend, and end those traitors! Honestly, killing military when everyone knows they're off limits, it was only a matter of time before they were shut down."

"Alright then. We'll check on Timinic, see what he might know of the Ghostknives' location, then head to the sewers." Tazra starts to head out the door, then pauses. "I'll, uh, be sure to come back later. To let you know how it went, of course." Anyone looking closely might see a hint of a blush on the half-orc's face.

"I think we're all ready. Let's find Timinic."

The group travels to the safehouse.

This cabin features sturdy wooden walls, with thick glass in its two small windows. A covered porch looks out over the banks of the Dagger River to the West, though steady sleet obscures the view.

Upon knocking on the door, a high-pitched gnomish voice answers, "Go away! No solicitors!"
