The refugees need a place to call home, however temporarily, and it needs to be somewhere secure.
A set of caves in the area offers multiple opportunities, including concealment, food, and water, in addition to some wealth.
Aubrin vaguely remembers a troglodyte tribe called the Children of Stone that often harassed—and feasted upon—Chernasardo Rangers in the area during her time. Aubrin recalls the creatures—and their secure home—and asks the party to investigate the location as a possible long-term home.

Faerieth 5ft step. draw concoction of Ice Armor. Drink. The water within the quicksand beginning to flow up her body, wrapping around her and thickening into a breastplate of solid ice.

Yaron won't move, but starting performance to inspire everyone.

Arlen tries to pull himself into the bank, then breathes a sigh of relief at finally pulling himself onto the bank. He braces himself for an attack from the ettercaps and spiders.

Russet slowly lurches forward ...

Darry heard the yipe from Sebastion and his blood ran cold. He took a step closer to his friend and mount. They both missed their attacks.

(npc) Big John stopped fighting the quicksand to utterly obliterate the spider that was attacking him.

(npc) Sor wounded his spider opponent.

The Ettercap, still grappling Sebastion, bit down at Darry’s mount again.

Yaron continues his ridiculous poetry and steps back, snapping off a shot at the spider that attacked him. The shot hit dead center killing it. It flopped down with its legs curled up.

Faerieth, strikes at the spider with her staff, glad for the buoyancy of her newly formed armor.
She struck it, dealing modest damage, she is also easily able to keep from sinking into the quicksand with her ice armor.

Russet clambers ashore and then stands up.

Arlen breathes a sigh of relief as he sees Russet get free of the quicksand, and he shouts at Big John "Get out of the quicksand before you drown, John!"

(npc) John struggled mightily, and despite the sucking of the quicksand, he is able to finally crawl onto solid ground.

(npc) Darry hacked at the spider next to him, damaging it.

(npc) Sor slashed at the spider next to him, killing it.

(npc) Sebastion is unable wiggle free of the Ettercap.

The Ettercap managed to pin Sebastion in webbing, making him helpless.
”Yess, yess, struggle more delicious one!” It hissed gleefully as it dragged Sebastion back another step.

Russet charges at the spider by Faerith, but he missed and plunged up to his hocks again in the quicksand.

Faerieth continues to tread water, striking out with her staff again. She hit the spider solidly, dealing serious damage while bobbing easily in the quicksand.

(npc) Sor turned his longbow against the Ettercap, but missed. He started moving around

(npc) Big John levered himself to his feet, grasped his sword and lumbered around the quicksand heading to support Derry.

The spider hit by Derry scuttled clumsily off into the depths of the webs, retreating in fear for its life.

I could swear when I made my post that there was a spider outside the quicksand. I would not have charged Russet into the quicksand after all the trouble to get him out and was puzzled by your description when I read it until I had a chance to look at the map. Could we retcon that to be a double move to get adjacent to Arlen instead? Either way, Russet will be attacking a spider beside him...

Yaron continues mocking the spiders, while drawing another arrow to fire into the Ettercap. The shot flew true and lost only a little force when it sank into the Ettercaps body doing serious damage.

With panic setting in, he swung at the fleeing ettercap (hitting but doing little damage) before setting himself and charging after it. He caught up and lashed out, striking it for modest damage. It hissed in rage again. Sebastion whimpered, but is unable to move now.

Retconning Russet to move next to Arlen last round.

Russet tries to gore the adjacent spider, and hits for modest damage.

Arlen tries to cut down the spider beside him, but missed wildly, almost hitting Russet.
Tthen he steps around it.

Faerieth keeps treading water as she brings her staff around in another solid strike with her staff, splattering the bug.

(npc) Big John charges across the bridge and overhand chops the Ettercap, dealing significant damage.

(npc) Sor stepped forward and shot the Ettercap, dealing modest damage.

The combined damage from Yaron, Darry, Big John and Sor is enough to kill the Ettercap, which drops Sebastion as it falls to the ground, its legs shuddering.
The last of its associate spiders scuttle away.
The battle is over.


The Ettercap and its allies have eaten all threats within a day's travel, so you are able to rest without interruption.

When you investigate, you find the spiders’ nests are 15 feet up in the trees, and contain the remains of previous victims in webbing sacks. Most of the remains are of squirrels, rabbits, and birds, but there are also two humanoid corpses.
One is still dressed in a +1 chain shirt and a cloak of resistance +1,
and carries a masterwork shortbow with 15 +1 arrows and a single sleep arrow.
A masterwork light mace, a holy symbol of Erastil, and a scroll tube (containing scrolls of charm animal, cure light wounds, lesser restoration, and plant growth) are sealed in with the second body.
Several gemstones are scattered among the nests, fallen from the pocket of a previous victim. In total, there are three agates (worth 10 gp each), one star rose quartz (worth 55 gp), and four amethysts (worth 110 gp each).


When you look at the concealed fortifications that make up the Chernasardo Rangers redoubt, you find nobody there.

Survival DC15:
You determine that no one has used the building for at least 2 weeks. Evidence there suggests that they left before the Ettercap moved in.

Perception DC15:
You find a half-burned letter recalling all Chernasardo Rangers to Fort Trevalay, though it gives no indication of what or where Fort Trevalay is.

"Come here buddy..... can anyone help him? Please?"

He asked and pled as he pulled his large furred companion closer to him. His voice was cracking and it was very apparent he was a hair away from breaking. He did manage to get up and moving helping the others search the remains ...eventually

Sebastion whimpered slightly, still limp as a dishrag.

Heal check DC12 regarding Sebastion:
The paralysis is due to the venom attacking Dex. A couple of days complete rest and it will wear off. Sooner if you have an antitoxin.

A medium sized shortbow is usable by a small character as a shortbow at -4.

However, it is an easy Craft:Weapon check (DC10) to turn a medium shortbow into a small longbow.

Swimming back to solid land and climbing out, Faerin quickly makes her way over to help Darry with Sebastion, explaining the effect of the poison and the timeframe it would take to wear off.

"We have a few doses of anti-toxin!"


The anti-toxin is successful, and Sebastion begins to recover quickly; though it will take a full rest to completely restore his Dex damage.

"So it doesn't look like there's any sign of them. I guess the best we can hope for is to see if there and any supplies we can get back to our camp, and refocus on where to head next.
