DM-Camris' IRONFANG INVASION Chapter 1: Trail of the Hunted

Game Master Camris

Part 3: CRADLED IN STONE
The refugees need a place to call home, however temporarily, and it needs to be somewhere secure.
A set of caves in the area offers multiple opportunities, including concealment, food, and water, in addition to some wealth.
Aubrin vaguely remembers a troglodyte tribe called the Children of Stone that often harassed—and feasted upon—Chernasardo Rangers in the area during her time. Aubrin recalls the creatures—and their secure home—and asks the party to investigate the location as a possible long-term home.

Round 4 completed__________________

Yaron continues his mocking, walking up the path to be able to fire at the frontline of Hobgoblins -- firing at the leftmost one. And he shoots him dead.

Arlen rushes upon the fleeing hobgoblins "To me! " he shouts as his axe flashes out of his belt loop, into his hand, and then in a sweeping arc at the nearest hobgoblin. He hits and wounds the central one.

Russet lets out a bugle and follows his master's example, lowering his horns in an attempt to gore the fleeing goblins. But he missed.

With a rebel yell, Big John surges forth with speed unexpected for one so armored (30ft mv).
Targeting the hobgoblin to the right of Arlen and Russet, the big warrior leads with his spiked shield before him as he prepares to deliver a savage swipe with his broad bladed sword!
But he is blocked by the hobgoblin’s disciplined shield wall.
Crashing into his foe, the angry spirits swirl about looking to touch the living flesh of those who have threatened their host.
The spirits are not blocked by such mundane protections, and their ghostly touch causes the hobgoblin to die in horror.

Faerieth hurls a dart at one of the hobgoblins, easily blocked by his shield.

Darry Swiftfoot whistled to his wardog and pointed at the hobgoblin to the far right.
"Sic em boy! Get em!
He called as he hurried forward as fast as his small legs would take him. His wardog bayed and rushed forth teeth snapping at the hobgoblin on the edge of their battle line.
Unfortunately, Sebastion completely missed the leap and fell into a tangle of blackberry vines.

(npc) Sor aimed carefully and shot the last hobgoblin right through the eye and into the brain.
And with the fall of the last hobgoblin, this battle is over.

Big John picks up the now dead hobgoblin by the throat. As his hand lifts it off of its feet the party can hear the sounds of bones cracking under the big man’s fist!

”Get up you son of ah!”

Seeing it is clearly dead, Big John grabs it by the belt and launches it head first into the nearest rock.

His shoulders slump and his breathing changes as he falls out of his rage. He closes his eyes and grits his teeth.

The swirling spirits slow their frantic flight and peacefully wind down to the ground by John’s feet. They briefly take on the form of three small children that make a ring around John’s legs hugging him tight before they melt into them.

Big John slings his shield back over his shoulder and begins wiping off his broad bladed sword.

”Whether they go missing or are found dead like tinsel in the trees, more will come. Either way, let them fear the death hidden in these woods. We can’t spend much time doing whatever it is we chose to do with these pukes. We need to get to the Rangers.”

”I have a lot more vengeance to take, we might run out of Hobs before I’m done.”

Faerieth watches with more than a little concern as John savagely brutalizes corpse, listening as her companions discuss what to do with the bodies. "Both have merit. If we hide the bodies in the forest, off the path, they may have to spend time finding their lost patrol, time that could be the difference between the next survivors we find, for us finding another group of bodies that they got to first."

"But...when they find them, it should be clear that they are being hunted, and that they will find no safety in these lands."

Ironfang Legion Recruit Manual:
IRONFANG LEGION RECRUIT MANUAL
>ENTRY 2-4: KNOTS
Buckles and latches are strong, but rarely available in the field. Chains and shackles are heavy and costly—usually more valuable than the half-dead slaves you take in the field. Save yourself the weight in your pack and learn to bind captives with rope.
Rope and twine are easily fashioned from plants or from an enemy’s guts. Knots keep your kit tight, keep your uniform together after a battle, and sometimes keep your wounds closed until Hadregash gets around to judging your miserable ass!
Know your knots and when to use them!
>ENTRY 11-12: BINDING
You can and will be tested on this knowledge at your commander’s discretion, and poor performance is punishable via lashings.
Remember: Loose knots lose slaves.
BINDING HANDS
ALWAYS bind hands individually as well as together. Human and halfling wrists in particular are flexible, even when broken. Save yourself a lashing and tie them right the first time with a modified prusik knot.
BINDING SLAVES TOGETHER
Unless you want to hold a dozen separate lines like a nursemaid, bind your slaves on a single line with a man-harness knot. You never need to untie your current captives to add a new neck, and each slave’s struggles tighten the rope around his neighbors’ necks. Humans’ empathy makes them their own jailers!

Bounty broadsheet:
BOUNTY!
Phaendar has not been secured to our
glorious general’s satisfaction, and in
her name I now offer a bounty of 25
pieces of gold to any member of the
Ironfang Legion who returns reliable
information regarding the location of
fugitive human-likes who fled Phaendar.
The payment is doubled if you instead
return their heads. Live captives may be
claimed as slaves!
All rewards are doubled for the
impudent ringleaders of this band!
Return all information or heads to my
cur of a son, Sergeant Scarvinious.
—Lieutenant Scabvistin

Those of you who have interacted or desired to join with the Chernasardo Rangers before know the traces of the near invisible path towards the redoubt that is their base in this region.
It takes you several days of travel, but you finally come to where they are.
This swampy gully, plagued by everpresent fog, is well hidden from casual glances and thus makes an ideal hiding spot. While the everpresent insects and general lack of resources make it a poor home for the refugees, the location is home to a small Chernasardo Ranger redoubt (the closest one to Phaendar).

The forest grows thick here, trees pressed close together with their branches intertwined. A gloom hangs in the air.
Foliage around the base of the trees is sparse, stunted by lack of sunlight.
The songs of birds and noises of small animals have ceased, adding to the eerie atmosphere of the ancient woods.
This eerie gully contains a number of standing pools and dead trees, all swarming with insects.
Up ahead, the redoubt is barely visible through the fog; a large tree house built above the depressing terrain, protected from most predators by the muddy water below.

"Hopefully they'll eat the hobgoblins too--maybe they already have. I just hope they haven't eaten the rangers..." Arlen mutters back to Yaron.

Darry called out “Sebastion... Defend me!”
Sebastion yipped and finally crawled out of the quicksand. He took his place before his master .
Darry threw the dagger at the largest creature there, but it hung up on strands of webbing near the giggling monster.
Dagger thrown he readied his axe.

Sor managed to climb up onto solid ground

”Look at the worms, wiggling on the hook! Dear father, thank you for this feast!” The big one shouted to the foggy sky. They all jumped onto the heroes!

The Ettercap snatched up Sebastion and leaned down to bite.

"Watch out, these things are venomous, and there are surely web based traps nearby." he hurriedly whispers to the party.
"Hello, are you friend to the Chernasardo?" Arlen asks

TACTICAL MAP

Female NG Half-elf Druid (Green Faith Initiate) 4 | HP 21/25 | AC 14 (18) T 12 FF 12 | CMB +4, CMD 14 | F: +6, R: +2, W: +7(+9 ench) | Init: +2 | Perc: +6, SM: +8 | Speed 30ft | Active conditions: None.

"They have every intention of killing and eating us!" Faerieth says as she quickly assesses the danger of their situation, even as she just manages to avoid the spider's bite.

Taking a gamble, the druidess takes a single step, one that takes her off the solid ground, plunging her into the sucking swamp as she takes one of her concoctions in hand. Gritting her teeth as the chill of cold water and sand envelops her lower body, she downs the concoction, feeling its magic activate within her, the water within the quicksand beginning to flow up her body, wrapping around her and thickening into a breastplate of solid ice.

5ft step. draw concoction of Ice Armor. Drink.

From spell description: "If the intended wearer is immersed in water when you cast this spell, you may form the armor around the wearer (who may be you); otherwise the wearer must don the armor normally. Because the ice is slightly buoyant, the wearer gains a +2 circumstance bonus on Swim checks, except when swimming downward. Druids can wear ice armor without penalty."

AC goes up to 18

Is there room to step back and stay on the little island, or does that put Yaron back into the quicksand?

Yaron: You can take a 5 ft step NW and be on dry land. Otherwise, it's the quicksand for you.

Should have started the performance last round. My bad.

Yaron winces as the spiders leapt at his companions, So much for talking things out... He starts to raise his bow, but then shakes his head, realizing that he needs to help his allies and not just himself. Instead, he takes a breath, his mind racing, until he starts to chuckle and begins reciting more doggerel, "There once was a spider pack in the swamp/ Who thought that on us they might chomp / But when they emerged from the sand / They got squished on the land / With a decidedly satisfying stomp."

Won't move, but starting performance to inspire everyone.

GM did you double post everything on purpose? Was Arlen attached once or twice? Because the first attack missed but the second one hit

Arlen tries to pull himself into the bank,

Arlen Swim, DC10, untrained, ACP: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 - 1 = 3

dangit. I'm guessing that's a nice action and I can try again

Arlen Swim, DC10, untrained, ACP: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 1 = 20

is he standing now, or prone on the shore?
