The wing and bastard sword symbol of Ragathiel glows on Maxxuud's shield as he concentrates on calling his deity to protect his comrades from the ravashings of poison.

The cannon cacophany seems to have alerted nearby creatures as a large towering menace with a horrible, vertically aligned mouth and arms that split at the elbows into twin clawed hands appears from the tunnel to the east.

They're gugs and you know about everything about them.
Gugs are inhuman monstrosities that dwell in the deep places of the world. Whether they were banished to the dark lands by ancient gods or the light-loving races they terrorized, or perhaps were brought to the deep realms by dark powers from some even more inhuman nightmare realm, is unknown, but gugs are loathed by other races for their carnal rites of slaughter.
Gugs are 16 feet tall and weigh nearly 2,000 pounds, but they move with an eerie, unnatural gait as though their limbs contained far too many joints. They can contort and distend their limbs for greater reach or to wriggle easily through impossibly small passages. Gugs may cling for long hours to cave walls or just within dark side-caverns, lying in wait for prey to stumble too close. Their senses are keen, however, and their joy in the bloody hunt is considerable and gugs who catch the scent of blood may stalk their prey for long days, even venturing at times beyond their caves to dare the bright lands of the surface in search of tasty meat to drag back for their horrific sacrifices.
Gugs are savage fighters when driven by a strong leader, but on their own may flee if brought to fewer than half their hit points, carrying off fresh meat for later feasting if they are able. They can subsist on fungi, slimes, and molds as well as carrion and even undead flesh—particularly that of ghouls.

Shaking off the unexpected succession of awesome blows, Maxxuud gets himself to his feet. Looking up into the face of the front Gug, he yells
"By Ragathiel, I will have my Vengence upon you!" smite evil
Unfazed by the difference in size between them, Maxxuud strides forward and squares up to the Gug's chest, defending himself against any blow the Gug might throw his way as he advances.
"Target the Gug at the back if you must but this Gug is mine!"
The gug takes a swing at Maxxuud's legs as he approaches.

“Chaps, I love our blind faith that we can deal with anything and I especially believed that these were just regular mines that had a few clockwork contraptions in… However I’ve been holding out on you… Clearly this mine is littered with lots of little buggers and we need to think about this a little better… I think we need to be prepared and I’m proposing we send in an Arcane Eye… It has my senses and it is invisible… We should be able to map most of this area…”
Philton feels slightly defeated by the ambushes that have taken place…

Looking visibly woozy, Maxxuud glares at Philton.
"Why did you remove us from the fight? I could have taken those Gugs single handed! They would have felt the divine justice of Ragathiel. We should march right back there and...."
Maxxuud slumps down, clearly feeling ill from the infernal effects of breaking a promise. One of his hands starts to glow with holy light and he places this over the gash that the Gug had made on his leg. The wounds begin to close and the colour returns to his face. He stands up, looking much more healthy and glares at Philton with purpose.

"I have learned to banish the taint of hell from breaking a promise but I will not leave Vengence unserved. Philton, map your dungeon if you wish but our first stop will be back to those Gugs to repay the hospitality they so richly deserve."

Philton retrieves his wands, handing them to his companions and holding his metamagic rod, He moves to be 30 foot away from his companions asking them to move closer to the entrance just to avoid any mishaps as they start to heal up... He begins casting through concentration an extended Arcane eye...
He concentrate on the spell giving the group a running commentary of the eye's efforts, sending this as quickly as possible to the area they just left...
Philton starts casting arcane eye, while Maxxuud goes stands on watch.
Brotil acknowledges that infernal healing is cheaper than CLWs and his appreciation of gold is bigger than his ethics, so Tyranyx casts Infernal Healing on Philton, herself and Brotil.
However before she can reapply on Philton Maxxuud raises the alarm! Gugs approaching! He notices the front two gugs are walking on all fours (or is it sixes? it's hard to tell with these aberrations) and have their eyes close to the ground. They seem to be tracing back the way the intruders entered their home! Maxxuud's paladin sense tingles as it recognizes the front gug!

Calling upon the power of the arcane, she summons an empowered intensified fire ball and focuses it on top of the Gugs.
The blue gug scales the wall and bypasses the pit, triggering Maxxuud's ready.

Suddenly Philton feels the earth ripple and the guecubu that escaped rises up from the ground and attacks.

"Brotil, perhaps another wall of blades would help protect Philton from any incoming enemy at the rear".

Philton has been very distracted during this melee, finding himself between a rock and a dwarf… Looking at both sides of the melee he can see Maxxuud lying in wait of the Guglings… With hopefully the blade barrier protecting Tyranyx for the imdeate furture, Philton looks to Brotil “My friend I have a scroll of Heal if you require it, with the magical interference it’s not worth more than notepaper to myself”.

Using the power of Irori to kip up, Maxxuud faces off against the gugs in the cavern.
"You will feel my Vengence, Gug spawn!"
Clicking his boots, he lays into the orange gug in front of him, still power attacking and fighting defensively, whilst using his guile on the orange gug (assuming he survives)
Maxxuud then takes a 5 foot step diagonally back and with his last attack, aims a decapitation shot again the ninja gug that he had smited before.
(+2 if Philton is considered flanking)
