Tyranyx steps over the corspe of the Guecubu, focusing her gaze past her fellow pathfinders to the Guglings in the cavern beyond.
Waving her hands in the air, she concentrates on placing a fireball on top of the Guglings in the cavern, taking care to avoid Maxxuud.
'This has gone on long enough!' she says as she intensifies and empowers the fireball to do as much damage as possible to the Guglings.

At the sight of the Gug Savant readying to strike Tyranyx weaves a touch of otherworldly influence into her cast, and steps into the ethereal plane.

Brotil is out of offensive spells, so he delays.
The gugs all move.
The gug savant double moves towards the western front, not wanting to try the blade barrier again.
The gugling retreats.
The two of the new gugs join their leader at the western front.
One is send to the eastern front and seems to be waiting for someone to getting its reach.
The heavily wounded one stays in the rear, possibly waiting to pick off fleeing forces, without risking its hide in a potential fireball.
Party is up!

Getting to his feet, Maxxuud brushes off his close encounter with the floor. He then majestically rises into the air using his five wings.
"Great work team. That was a Gug infestation. We should regroup and then further explore this cavern, starting with their gug base. Let us not tarry for my wings will last but minutes. Or do you still wish to wait here and scout with the magic eye?"

Struggling to his feet Philton exclaims, “You know, in a way I have to congratulate you all. Up until now, you really had me going. I mean, here we are, people of the world and I thought we wouldn’t get our hands dirty, let alone our backs! We’re quite a neat little unit and that's gotta be cool. Even when we’re outnumbered we're angry, yet controlled. We never lost ourselves. That’s teamwork…”
Dusting off the rubble Philton looks at the group, “To answer you Maxxuud, I’m happy with either… The Arcane Eye last for around ten minutes and you wings five? I’m happy to persevere to the Gug layer if they have such a habitat and 'Greyhawk' the bones off their chicken soup!”.

"That is in part due to the careful teamwork that you are teaching us Philton."
"Excellent! Let us head to this Gug den. I wish to put these wings to good use. We can use your arcane eye to investigate somewhere that hasn't already emptied to attack us"

On the body of the gug savant Himnentep you find various animal? fetishes, a crude armor made from a clockwork automaton doesn't actually increase its defenses, but does look impressive, various gears and a key.
The gug territory is quite large and it looks like you somehow wandered into the middle before alerting them of your presence.
I've updated the google slide with titles of the different areas that were part of the gug domain.
Here's a list with descriptions. Areas marked with a * require some extra interaction
Miners’ Quarters
These crammed living quarters served as sleeping units for the miners who worked the Karggat Mine. Now, the beds are in shambles, having been all but eaten by the resident coal moths and rot grubs. Near one of the crumbling bunks in lies one such forgotten treasure — a fully intact necklace of fireballs.
Captain’s Quarters *
This sparsely decorated living area is furnished with a sturdy bed, a rickety desk and wardrobe, and a three-foot-tall iron safe in the western corner.
Pantry
This decrepit pantry’s shelves are barren, save for the sheet of dust and soot covering the room. The hutch in the southeastern corner of the alcove appears to have been smashed in, and most of it lies in shambles. Philton finds perception a small secret drawer in a gugsmashed hutch and opens it disable device to reveal a flat container of silverware. Upon closer inspection, one of the spoons among the various ornate pieces of silverware (worth 300 gp altogether for their craftsmanship alone) is actually a sustaining spoon.
Dining Hall
This broad hall appears to have once been a dining chamber, but the long, rotten tabletops taking up the bulk of the area’s floor space have been covered in the bloody hides of various animals. A set of stone stairs to the north leads to a raised platform adorned with but a single round table.
Workshop
The thick layer of soot and dust covering the scattered tools and abandoned mine carts in this alcove indicate that this old workshop likely hasn’t been used for quite some time. Philton finds three ounces of stone salve remain in an otherwise unassuming cylindrical ceramic jar.
Stone Cylinder *
This thick stone cylinder is almost ten feet across, and sits atop another peg that’s attached to the ground. Four stone levers jut from the sides of the cylinder, making a cross shape.
Steep Tunnel *
This long tunnel has a significantly steeper grade to it than the rest of the mines. The tunnel’s mine tracks run north and south as far as the eye can see.
Trapped Corridors *
These corridors contain several crude traps, but not a match for Philton's skills.

"Team, the Captains quarter safe looks interesting... Why would a safe remain intact in such a situation... Surely these aberrations would have been curious about such a foreign object.."
Investigate the safe gingerly, searching on the way, "Tyranyx any chance of supporting me with magical detection support, Maxxuud I might need your muscle to open this and Brotil could you be on standby just in case we die?".

Tyranyx: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (20) + 20 = 40Brotil: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Philton: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Maxxuud: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Even without magical detection Tyranyx recognizes this as a masterfully made cast iron safe, which could easily fetch 20,000 gp for a collector when undamaged complete with the original keys.
Besides scattered pieces of parchment and faded ledgers pertaining to the old dwarven mining operation here, the only things of note in this chamber are a thick iron key in the top drawer of the desk and a leatherbound journal beneath the bed.
Three keyholes adorn the left side of the vault’s door, and each key has four positions, marked with the dwarven symbols for the numerals 0, 1, 2, and 3. The handle on the right side of the door is actually a lever that can be rotated clockwise when lightly tugged.
The key found in this room and the one found on the gug leader seem to match with the locks.
Here is the last entry in the journal:
"The eidite poisoning has taken almost fullhold of my blood by now. I fear that I may be its next victim in this struggle to command the properties of the enigmatic mineral, and I am regretful that it could not have been a more noble martyr who could teach my fellow miners the folly of their avaricious ways. I learned but too late that all the wealth in the world could not replace my loyal comrades, who have seen me through to the end in these darkest of nights. To my most faithful friends, I pray that you see to my fellow invalids after my passing, including the following unfortunates:
Three fellow miners: Hekrin, Pyndle, and Sortare
One priest: Clockmother Ingled
Two pets: Maximos and Tor
To those who heed my dying wishes, I seek for you all the best in the Great Beyond, and hope that fortune finds you well.
—Captain Retham"

![]() |

"Well I guess that we have found the fellow miners that he is talking about. We can certainly bless their bodies and given them a proper burial. As to the other two we best keep an eye out for them."
Maxxuud turns to Brotil
"Brotil, are you able to see inside this cast iron safe without opening it. I vaguely remember you mentioning some such power. Otherwise, we should likely find the last key rather than picking the lock. And hopefully some information about what numbers to turn the keys to."

![]() |

When they reach the stone cylinder, Maxxuud stops to ponder the device that has confronted them.
"I wonder what this device does. Is this some contraption that will turn cogs elsewhere. It looks like large portcullis controls. Does anyone else have any idea?"
