[PFS] Grotto of the Deluged God (Inactive)

Game Master Gummy Bear

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1–5.

When a ship that Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry hired to ferry Pathfinders to the Gloomspires vanished, she called upon diviners to speak to the sailors, only to learn that they had met a watery grave. Benarry has narrowed down the ship’s location to the shoals off the coast of the pirate island of Tempest Cay. While the venture-captain asks some questions on shore and searches for survivors, the PCs must travel out to the shipwreck, uncover the reason why a crew of experienced sailors met their doom, and discover why the nearby ocean has been growing increasingly perilous.

Contents in “Grotto of the Deluged God” also contribute directly to the ongoing storyline of the Concordance faction.

Though she'd normally be loathe to give away her hiding spot there's something unusual about the crabs' demeanor that renders her unable to keep silent.

"Oh hey, here they come! They're not moving very fast, are they? Most things that are hungry or angry or hangry seem to move very fast, from what I've seen. It's almost more like they're just curious and want to come say hello!"

Perrine, hearing Willow’s observation, pulls a bit of crusty bread and cheese from her rations and tosses them towards the crabs. ”I don’t know if they’ll like people food or not, but if we don’t have to fight them, that’s be neat!”

When Perrine's food plunges into the water, the crabs initially become tense and jerk away from the area. However, as the scent of food floats through the water, two of them quickly move to devour the tasty little morsels and appear to be content to rest to the north of their original tidal pool.

Someone throws an additional ration and someone searches the pool:

Delving into the pool, you find a small assortment of notable items. A wand of cure light wounds (27 charges), a wand of burning hands (28 charges), and a finger still wearing a silver ring worth 15 gp. The inside of the ring is inscribed “true love, MKH.”

Once the crabs are fully occupied with nibbling on things less furry than herself, Chhat strips off most of her gear to keep it from getting too wet, and goes wading in the salty sandy shallows. When her toes nudge a gold band she pulls it out of the sand to examine it.

“Awww, I'm sorry you won't get to see MKH again, “she says to the finger as she steps ashore and separates it from the shiny ring.

“Perrine, could you say a few words over this finger as I bury it?“

With the threat subdued, you begin to feel the increasing warmth of the sun on your exposed skin. Combined with the cool ocean water on your legs, it makes for a unique experience. The occasional salty breeze eases any discomfort, if only for a moment.

Intrigued by the latest arrivals to their aquatic purgatory (perhaps even a little relieved to not currently be crab food), fry and fingerlings nibble at your clothes, darting to and fro, to see what else they have to offer.

Amidst the small flock of airborne combustibles, a brave two meet their mark, sending flaming crabs across the corals. What little remain steadily burn away as they carry on with singular focus, but by the time they've made it a few feet, the majority of the swarm has scattered into charred husks.

COMBAT OVER! Nice work :D

Checking out the tidal pool the crabs scurried out of reveals a hodgepodge of items, from rusty old tools to splintered wood, but taking a moment to root around reveals three green tourmalines. The ever changing winds aside, all seems quiet on the reef... for now...

Once y'all have wrapped up post combat tasks read further!:

Prepared for more action, you turn your attention to the Pride of Aspenthar. The ship is in reasonable condition, all things considered, except for the large hole gouged through its hull. A rope ladder hangs down from the deck, ending about three feet above the ground. It’s brittle, as if it’s been soaked and dried in the hot sun many times, but it is intact. Within the large hole, the hold appears dark and empty.

You are all able to quickly deduce that survivors of the wreck likely unfurled the ladder and used it to escape. There are no lifeboats attached to the ship. You also notice that the hole breached the side of the ship, not the front as one might expect if it had simply run aground on the reef. The location of the gash suggests that the Pride was swept sideways into the jutting coral. Lastly, you are fairly confident that the ship is obviously too damaged to repair, even with spells such as mending or make whole.

Despite having three decks, there are only two clear entry points for y'all at this point:

1) Scale the brittle ladder Starting you on the main deck

2) Crawl through the hole and into the hull Starting you on the lowest deck

With the agreement of her sisters, Chhat carefully works her way up the side of the wrecked ship. She avoids using the rope ladder, preferring the feel of the wood under her fingers and toes. It also allows her to come up along a different path, so as to not give her position away too much. Safely making your way to the ship, in no small part due to Souja's survival training, Chhat expertly scales the wooden ship. Unable to find any reason not to lower her much sturdier rope, the rest of the party is able to scale the ship as well, without the precarious ladder's aid. As you place your feet upon firm, yet creaky, wood, you notice a slight gradient in the floor that declines as it approaches the gouge in the hull.

While she waits for her sisters to ascend, Chhat is able to find a spyglass bolted to the rail and rusted in place.

Chhat takes a peak through the spyglass?:

You can see that the currents of wind and waves are leading directly toward a rocky cave in the cliff face along the shore of Tempest Cay. You aren't confident that attempting to move the spyglass will be successful.

Gouges in the deck and masts show signs of a struggle, though no corpses linger here and the only scent not carried away by the fierce wind is the briny stench of low tide. From the deck, the currents swirl away from the reef, churning white spray toward the high cliffs that make up the shore of distant Tempest Cay. The door in the aft bulkhead is barred from the outside in a makeshift fashion, with a single board resting in a bracket on each side of the doorway.

After the first two of her teammates reach the deck, Chhat lets out the breath that she didn't even realize she was holding. Relieved to no longer be alone on the creaking deck, her natural curiosity takes over, and she quickly takes a look around.

"Check this out!" she says from the spyglass. "There's a cave over there. Maybe that's where the crew went."

Or got taken.... No! No more creepy thoughts.

When she gets to the barred door, it occurs to her that something is amiss.

"Why do you think they'd bar the door from the outside? Wouldn't that mean they were trying to keep something in there?"

As she hears herself ask the question, she starts backing away from the door and draws her pistol.

Perrine stays at the spyglass. ”It makes me think someone might be telling us that we need to get to the cave. A hint, maybe, pointing right at the cave itself.”

"Hmm...Chhat makes sense, usually people barricade things out like water or nasty monsters or other people. But barricading something in, that's not good, not good at all."

The leshy pauses for a moment and then cheerfully adds, "But we need to explore, right? We should look inside, because it might tell us more about what happened and where the crew went! Then we can go spelunking."

Without really waiting to hear what anyone else has to say on the matter, Willow reaches down and tugs on both of the boards the hold the door closed...

The party gears up for combat as Willow tosses the boards from the door and Souja opens it wide. First is the stench. Briny death is thick in the air for a moment, the only saving grace being that it hasn't been cooking in the heat of the day...yet.

As your eyes adjust to the dim light, you can see that unlike other sections of the ship, there are few signs of damage in this room other than those obviously caused by water. A waterlogged corpse floats in a large pool of water in the corner of the room, wearing a uniform of rotting finery, apparently dead from a stab wound in the side. The waves have washed most of the blood from the floorboards, leaving only a faded, rust-colored stain. A thick, weather-beaten journal is tucked into the corpse’s coat.
________
For the record, Willow, you didn't hear anything through the door. Maroon circle is where the corpse is currently floating. Water is about a foot and a half deep in that corner, dry everywhere else. Based on what you can tell from the angle of the slope of the ship, it makes sense for the water to be pooling there.

She continues to glance around the room, seemingly puzzled.

"I don't see anything else, though, so why'd they block the door?"

In a flurry of movement Souja leaps into the room and plucks the book from the corpse, while Chhat fires a round into it when she jumps back out of the room. Aside from the shudder and resulting ripples in the pool, everything remains still...

The book Souja finds in her hands is still largely intact. Pages of vellum and the use of water-resistant ink appear to have been worth every ounce of gold in this department: it is still perfectly legible! On the inside of the cover is the printed name of it's former owner, one "Jaheem."

Thumbing through the journal, you notice that it contains an account of the ship’s last mission, detailing the departure of the Pathfinders’ landing party, the crew growing restless waiting for their return from the Mordant Spire, and eventually the crew’s outright mutiny as the weather grew worse. Jaheem’s last entries describe the ship’s collision with the reef and his intent to try using his water-related powers to escape his imprisonment: an attempt that clearly failed.

In the back third of the journal is marked off section labeled "Charts." Giving it a quick glance, you can easily tell that theses are logs and charts of the waters around the Eye of Abendego.

"It looks like you all have this part covered. I'm going to run up into the rigging to see if there's anything up there."

She takes a moment to reload her pistol, feeling a little silly for having shot the dead body. Buuuut, dead bodies don't always stay dead...

With her loaded pistol back in her holster, she heads up into the rigging. She pops up into the crow's nest first looking for anything that might seem important. While there, she takes a look around at the environment of the ship, and then checks out the sails and rigging as she heads back down to join her sisters.

Resolved to be diligent Pathfinders, it isn't long into your search before you hear... something... moving up the stairs. The sharp strike of wood on wood, followed by a footstep. Then a pause. The sharp strike of wood on wood, followed by a footstep. Then a pause.

Chhat, coming down in the rigging is the first to see it, but before she manages to shout to her sisters it throws it's head back. "UUUUAAAAAAAHHHHH!" it moans, pointing a finger at the Vanara while flailing it's other arm as though it were frantically trying to ring a bell.

COMBAT ROUND 1
Frantic arm flailing quickly turns into frantic shuffling as it raises it's battered and dull scimitar high in the air. Closing with Perrine, it makes a solid swing at her head, but the Gnome is nimble enough to side step the strike and another deep gash is added to the deck. Left with it's guard down, the Pathfinders have a chance to swoop in!
