GM Bret |

Opps, just realized that two different people were trying to use the same sphere!
@Warpac, the sphere for Detect Thoughts is currently around Tycho’s neck.
Also, no one remembered the name Castrovel yet.

![]() |

The Admiral will lend Warpac his medal, allowing the dwarf to use detect thoughts.

GM Bret |

Warpac gives the command word and concentrates.
The first round he detects the presence of thoughts in the area.
I don’t know what area you are scanning, it does a 60’ cone. For now, I will assume that Captain Gelviel Zorriah, Penny, Mongo, Tycho and Melody are in the area. Draw it if you want a different cone.
The second round he discovers there are five minds in the area and how intellgent each of them are; Captain Gelviel Zorriah Int 16, Penny Int 3, Mongo Int 10, Tycho Int 10, Melody Int 12.
Third round he concentrates on the thoughts of the Captain, only to find that mind closed to him.
Will save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21

![]() |

Not having any success with the Captain, Warpac swings his perspective around towards the device to see if it has any thoughts.

![]() |

Not willing to waste any of it, he moves towards one of the rooms and tries to detect thoughts through the walls.

GM Bret |

So I gather you are taking the spheres but leaving the Orrery behind.
I don’t think you have investigated D5.
Warpac checks through the walls and doesn’t detect any thoughts through them into the next room, so he opens the door.
Bookshelves line the walls of this room, although the majority of the books now lie scattered across the floor.

![]() |

It seems like the spheres may be of use in combat, and we can come back for the orrery later.
Admiral Drace taps themselves with the wand of Heightened Awareness and goes into the room full of books, looking around.
sight-based perception: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 2 = 21

GM Bret |

There are books on astronomy, history, and fiction. A number of the books are hand written and there are a few blank books.
Appraise check for value.
The books if gathered would weigh about 800 pounds total.
Other than the books and the bookcases they are in, there isn’t much of interest in this room.

![]() |

appraise aid: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
"What? You think these things might be valuable. They look like garbage to me. Who wants to read about a bunch of dead stars?"
Warpac dismisses the books with a wave.

GM Bret |

Theodric notices many of them come from Lirgen and some group calling themselves the Saoc Brethren. Since a lot of history and information about Lirgen was lost when the Eye of Abendigo formed and flooded the lands, he thinks they would be relatively rare.
He guesses if you packed out all the books, they would be worth about 4,000 gp.

![]() |

The bag of holding could probably fit about a fourth of them, more if it was emptied. I figure we pick the most valuable and stuff them in. If you all don;t mind, I'm going to just move things along...
After stuffing the books into the bag, the group will head towards the other end of the ship and open D2, dragging the captain along with them, still tightly trussed.

![]() |

Melody places some of the books in her handy haversack.
"We certainly can't let this history be forgotten!"

![]() |

Admiral Drace gives the captain a look. This one should be in the brig!
Tycho changes disguise into cult leader Abtaroh Vorenic. She grins, and says:
Let's leave him outside, on this hostile planet! Ha! Mango can guard him. the exit was on the way to the back of the ship, anyhow.
They cast Shield of Faith again before heading out.

GM Bret |

Warpac carries the captain with him as he trudges along to the next location. He does not appreciate being treated like a bag of potatoes. “Where are you taking me and why?” the captain asks as he squirms around.
Sorting through the library took enough time that the Detect Thoughts spell has worn off. The door is unlocked.

![]() |

Warpac, we can leave him outside. It'll be safer. He doesn't have his regulation helmet, after all! Abtaroh knocks herself on the head for emphasis.
Outside the door, Abtaroh re-casts detect thoughts and concentrates.

![]() |

"I'd rather keep him were I can see him. And he may come in useful if we actually run into some of the other players in this insane drama. I'll just take care of him - no problem at all to drag him along. Who knows, after he spends some time with us he may have a change of attitude."

![]() |

As you like it.
Ready to move on — tycho has a valuable Heroism ticking away now!

![]() |

Understanding that intelligent creatures usually know when they make a will save, Abtaroh will not push it. They cease concentrating on the Detect Thoughts spell, and then cast Mirror Image. 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 images.
They signal "One," and point to the door ahead.
All Tycho's spells are silent, of course. They will dismiss Heightened Awareness next time we roll initiative.

![]() |

Melody casts heroism on Mongo. She is ready to go in.

![]() |

Mongo moves to the front and, when everyone indicates they are ready, opens the door.

![]() |

"Oh wait, hold on." Mongo says, taking his hand off the doorknob and drawing his wand. "Forgot to do this earlier."
Mongo would like to finish healing up before going in, assuming someone is willing to tap him a couple times.

![]() |

Did you apply the healing from this post?

![]() |

Yep, thats why Mongo's only down 7 instead of 19.

![]() |

The party being ready, Warpac throws open the door with vigor and jumps inside, leaving the captain to slump by the door frame.

![]() |

Abtaroh used Mongo's wand to heal him up.
Mentioned this on Hangouts but wanted to codify it here if needed before we move in. Tycho is ready and will be dismissing Heightened Awareness to add to their initiative.

GM Bret |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

No one ever healed Mongo? I had waited for someone to do that.
Oh well, moving on!
The Captain makes an “Ooof!” sound asmhis body thuds against the floor. He still manages to cackle as Warpac throws open the door. “Let me know if you find any of those gnomish pistons in there!” he taunts, then he begins to madly laugh.
Not an exceptional laugh, still needs work. Still, you’ve heard worst mad laughs.
This strange room consists of two disparate areas.
To the east, the chamber is furnished as a comfortable-looking study, complete with a writing desk and a small case of books. Numerous star charts are painted on the walls, and a strange statue of what appears to be a huge moth with outstretched wings and a coiling tail of three long peacock feathers stands in the corner.
The western portion of the room is a stark contrast—a cube with polished walls and a strange circular design etched in the floor. The far side of this cube is a wall of dark purple glass or crystal, which pulses periodically with flashes faint light.
In the western portion of the room is a strange creature that looks like some sort of humanoid crossed with a vulture. It is about eight foot tall and has wide vulture wings, but also arms than end in nasty looking claws. It also has claws where a normal humanoid would have feet. It is staring at the group visible in the doorway.
The statue in the corner as a depiction of a star monarch—a magical space-faring creature sacred to the faith of Desna. It looks like it has been damaged.

Elemental resistances? How is it most likely going to try and kill us? DR?
Theodric states calmly "A Vrock demon" as he casts haste.
Potentially taking a move action, don't see the vrock on the map though.

GM Bret |

Resist acid 10, cold 10, fire 10; SR 20
It has a Stunning Screech that it will likely use to stun the group, then it will grab someone and evicerate them with the claws.
That is two questions.
Theodric recognizes the creature and casts Haste.
Bolded may act.

No one ever healed Mongo? I had waited for someone to do that.
Hmm. Always assume Warpac will wave a wand for someone if they ask. I kinda read when he said 'assuming someone is willing to tap him' as 'I'm assuming someone is willing to tap him'
kn religion: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
No DR, just SR? Looking for vulnerabilities and weakest ST.
"At least it is not a plague demon. We've had enough of that."
Warpac pauses long enough to allow Melody to act first, then activates his sacred armor/weapon and uses the haste to run around to the side of the demon and prepare for a game of badminton with Mongo. Provided he is not swatted himself to badly, he takes a shot.
to hit, sacred weapon: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 2 = 26; add inspired bonus if Melody starts up
damage, sacred weapon: 1d10 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 = 16; add inspired bonus if Melody starts up

GM Bret |

Warpac, It is Kn: Planes for the Vrock. You rolled Kn: Religion which tells you about the statue. Also isn’t DR separate from elemental resistances?
As for the healing, I was expecting someone to roll the d8 for CLW off Mongo’s wand,
Guess I will do the rolls.
CLW from wand: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
CLW from wand: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
A third one can not fail to completely heal him.
Oops, just realized I missed something when giving elemental resistances.
Will wait for Melody before resolving Warpac’s actions.

![]() |

Yes, I realize now that Theo did not get his last request, the one for DR. I am making more mistakes in this one game than I make in any 6 others. It's odd. At least the Knowledge roll is good for something!

![]() |

Melody moves in so she can see.
Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Melody starts up another performance! "Fight, fight, fight the big scary thing!"

GM Bret |

Melody moves in and starts cheering the group on.
Warpac moves in to set up a flank. As he moves up, the Vrock lashes at him with a claw, but it is deflected by the armor.
Claw: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19
Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2) + 5 = 10
Undaunted, Warpac swings his axe. It does much less damage than expected.
Then the creature shifts position slightly and lets out a horrible screech! It looks like some of it’s feathers are pressed up against an invisible wall, but there is nothing there to push against.
Bolded may act:
Round 1:

Vrock 8 damage

CRYSTALS! Emissary be praised!
The cultist's robes flutter as she scurries around the desk, pulling a wand and making ready to cast it once her allies are in the room.
Ready action: When Mongo and Tim and Penny are in the room, cast Bless from the wand.

![]() |

Fort save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
"Shaddap!" Mongo ignores the screeching, moving in and waiting for Warpac (or another ally) to distract the creature before taking a mighty swing.

GM Bret |

Tycho runs into the room and readies a wand.
As Mongo moves towards the creature, it swipes at him with a claw. It just barely hits!
Claw: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
Damage, DR: 2d6 + 5 - 3 ⇒ (5, 2) + 5 - 3 = 9
It isn’t quite able to take a swing at Theodric as he comes in.
Mongo and Theodric both hit, Theodric just barely managing to do so. Neither of them do full damage to the Vrock.
The Vrock tells Mongo “I shall destroy you and dance on your corpse!”
Bolded may act:
Don’t forget the Fort save if within 30’ of the Vrock.

I do believe Warpac is stunned. Hopefully I'm wrong again.

GM Bret |

It is a (Su) power so I agree, Steel Soul does not apply.
Warpac is stunned by the Vrock’s screech!
Bolded may act:
Don’t forget the Fort save if within 30’ of the Vrock.
