Yep, some of you will need additional exp for the fourth floor. I am still deciding on what to do for this to get people up to par. I will propose some options in a month or so. I’ll run an extra something - if everyone is down for it - after floor 3.
Pietro Slaszval the Boisterous |
Well, I might have some GM credit to pass on to Pietro in early May.

What's the gap for various characters? I thought thornkeep was a series, so a bit surprised that there is a designed gap between any of the modules. Or: is it level ranges for each, and starting on the low end leaves you stranded?
Roran Garrowson |
Roran is one XP away from the next level.

That is certainly part of it. Roran and Pietro both started I think with 2 XP. But even still the lowest level of the dungeon is actually lower tier than the one directly above it.
Telos Downshot |
I'm one XP away from Level 4, but if allowed I'd gladly play the extra module in between. Or, does Tealk want a break and one of us run the in-between module? (the GM would still get credit applicable to the target character for thornkeep). Just throwing it out there since he's doing the courtesy of this full series already.
GM Tealk |
Thank you Telos. I’m more than happy to run the full thing, ifs been a pleasure. I honestly don’t need a rest, this has been super awesome!
I am more than happy to do whatever you guys like, to get the lower level players up to par. So this next question is more aimed towards Pietro, Roran and Nanaryn. How much exp are you on currently? And what are you options of making that exp up?
Telos Downshot |
Fair enough. No thunder stolen :)

Another question might be 'how much do we need to proceed to the various levels.' Since we know we gain 3 XP per dungeon level completed.
Pietro is currently sitting at 5 XP as well.
I have a level-appropriate game I am running as part of Outpost II that should wrap up about the first week of May, the XP of which I could apply to Pietro, but that's about all I've got planned.
Telos Downshot |
I would really like to find out that my crit took out the construct... or at least maimed it :P
GM Tealk |
I have two job interviews tomorrow. Going to go to sleep and get some rest. Full post and update tomorrow afternoon. :)
Telos Downshot |
Good luck!
Naneryn |
I'm at 5 xp too. I do not get to play any face-to-face, so he isn't going to magically level up. Had a thought, though. What if you ran ALL of us through a single (1xp) adventure? That would get us lowbies up to par, but would the extra xp throw the others out of wack?
Sorry I keep dropping out like that. Too much real life sometimes. As always, feel free to bot me at will. No hard feelings if I die. No hard feelings if I miss so much of the adventure that you decide it is not fair for me to get credit for it.
GM Tealk |
That’s alright. I’m fine with this pace, everyone getting a good chance to play.
I am happy that everyone is only one scenario - 1 exp - away from a level up! In that case I will run a short scenario in the river kingdoms to get you over that threshold.
Pietro Slaszval the Boisterous |
So with a bit of research it looks like the tiers go like this:
1-2
2-4
3-5
6-8
5-7
Regardless of what happens we are good for three dungeon levels, and then 3(ish) of us need 1 XP to make level 4. Even that though still won't be enough to play in either of the lowest two levels of the dungeon. The lowest level characters would need 4 XP to reach 5th level to be in-tier for lowest level, and then complete that level to be in-tier for the level above that. That's if we can play them out of order. If not, then some of PCs will need 7 XP in order to complete the final two floors.
GM Tealk |
You are actually supposed to do it in order of 1-2-3-5-4. It’s strange, and the story plot is really weird as to why.
So currently we have 3 players that are 1 exp away from the upper level range.
After Forgotten Laboratory, you will be level 3.2. After Enugma vaults you will be 4.2. Only one exp away from level 5.0. By my calculations that’s all you’ll need, is one scenario in between to continue with the last few floors.

Sorry, tiers and levels and XP confuse me sometimes (especially when in the middle of playing them you get three of each stage) but I think floor 4 is tier 6-8 (at least that's what the additional resource page has its chronicle listed at) and that level 5 is tier 5-7. Those could of course be misprints made by someone at Society central as confused as I am.
Going by level: Three of us were 1st level going into level 1 (I don't know the levels by name; I own the book but haven't read it in years), 2nd upon entering level 2, and will be 3rd going into level 3. We on the lower end can make level 4 with a 1 XP side trek (maybe, I thought there might have been a completely new character somewhere in the party who might need more). After that I'm not sure because it doesn't seem like there is a tier whose lower end is 4--they just jump to 5 (after skipping over 6 in the dungeon floor-plans).
Telos Downshot |
The nice thing about Telos being one level up is that sorcerers are on the slow spell-level progression, so he'll bring it at the same time as the other casters.

I think the chronicle is listing them in dungeon level order, so the swap referenced above still works.
I don't own the book, so I don't have first-hand input, but it appears others schedule the levels to get the natural progression. E.g., this recruitment post from fantasygrounds.com, or this discussion on the paizo forums, both jive with this idea so that we should only need the one extra XP.
We could do it after this level but we must do it before our fourth module (level/part 5: The Dark Menagerie).
Roran Garrowson |
Roran does have a GM chronicle coming on line once he hits level 5 from GM credit.
GM Tealk |
Have people played Oathbreakers Die 10-02 in Core?

I'll update the character sheet online a little later today.
Telos Downshot |
Character profile updated.
GM Tealk |
Sorry team, I will need to wait until the weekend most likely to prepare everything out. I have had a super tough time at work, and am just flat out. I can see that everyone is mostly ready and itching to go.
I appreciate your patience.
Pietro Slaszval the Boisterous |
Have people played Oathbreakers Die 10-02 in Core?
I have. In fact, I am running a standard table of it for Outpost right now. I have a GM star so I could count it as my GM replay.
GM Tealk |
Module 2 - The Forgotten Laboratory! Chronicles!
I have sent you all your chronicles over email, same as last time. Let me know if I got something wrong.
We will be starting Floor 3 this week, when I get around to processing what happens in between sessions. Apologies I have been super busy.
Telos Downshot |
Got it! The chronicle looks good! Thank you, and no worries about being busy.
Roran Garrowson |
Chronicle look good. Will be purchasing some stuff between adventures.
Telos Downshot |
Same. I plan to buy the upgrade from bracers of armor +1 to +2. But I presume we have to wait until we return to the surface for that?
Naneryn |
So is it safe to visit the town now that we are past the first door and can prove there are bad things going on down here? If not, how/when do we get to spend our money? I can already smell the fibers in my pocket beginning to singe.
GM Tealk |
Sorry guys, I will have a full post up over next two days.
Yes, will be going back up to the surface where you can requisition items and such.
GM Tealk |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Alright guys, so I realised that I had burned myself out with running so much Thornkeep so quickly. I'd kind of lost the story I wanted to tell, and I just needed a break. On top of everything happening in life, i'd just needed a break from thinking of how to drive the plot forward without it just seeming like a simple dungeon crawl.
I am really to keep going, so once we all make our way back to the gameplay thread, we will start the next floor. Just a little bit of roleplay in between sessions, and we will be off again.
Thank you all for your patience, I appreciate it.
Telos Downshot |
It happens pretty easily, even while you’re enjoying something :) Human energy limits.
That said, the offer to trade off GM duties for our interim module still stands if you change your mind on that.
Roran Garrowson |
I should have Roran updated by Monday. Work kind of overwhelmed me the past week.
GM Tealk |
That is perfectly fine, we should be back up and going with Floor 3 on Monday, so no rush. Just a little bit of book keeping for the moment.
And thank you Telos, I might take you up on that offer actually. More on that soon.
Roran Garrowson |
Roran has been leveled and updated.
Items have been purchased. He is ready for the next level of the dungeon.
GM Tealk |
Happy Easter everyone! I hope everyone has enjoyed their break! I’m back from a good holiday, so expect more posts from me!
We are on our way with floor 3! Still waiting on Pietro to level up! Warning, this is the hardest floor in the entire module series, and I won’t go easy. Remember, running is always a good option.
Roran Garrowson |
Good thing I bought new armor, shield and enhanced my weapon.
I will also spend 2 prestige points for a potion of magic circle vs evil.
Telos Downshot |
Well, we were taken away as soon as we exited. I assume we’ll still have an opportunity to shop before re-entering.
Telos Downshot |
Never mind, I should have caught up on gameplay first. I’ll have purchases updated by tonight.
Naneryn |
I cannot figure out what to buy. Every time I decide on something, it isn't CORE.
Is it possible to buy a potion of sanctuary?
Naneryn asks his mates and anyone else available what kind of weapons are most likely to be useful against extra planar creatures? Cold iron, silver, plain magic, holy? Or should he forget weapons and make his mithral shirt +1?
Maybe 2pp on a wand of protection from evil?
Open to suggestions.
Telos Downshot |
cold iron weapons are often worthit because of their effectiveness against planar creatures, and double base cost isn't much for most weapons (i.e., ammunition: bullets, bolts, arrows, is a no-brainer).
for the mithral shirt, do you want to live with the chance of spell failure? Or, Arcane Armor Training is a core feat.
While the party is in town, Telos will pay 3000 to upgrade his Bracers of Armor from +1 (1000) to +2 (4000)
Pietro Slaszval the Boisterous |
One quick thing about the last couple of chronicles--'day jobs?'
GM Tealk |
Oooop! So I did forget something! Please roll them if you have some! I’ll update and send through again!
