Mika Zellhwiger |
This minotaur is NASTY for these levels. Let's kill this thing!
Mika, seeing his friends being attacked on the other side of the battlefield will attempt to support his team. Double move into the vines
DC 15 Reflex Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Woo!
Lisette Jacquetta Allegria |
The leshy tries to fire again, but misses.
[dice=Sling+Bless]1d20+2+1
Not that it would turn this shot into a hit, but remember I made your sling into a +1 sling (+1 attack and damage)
GM Weenerton |
Totally fine if y'all want to head back in. Just letting you know you've done what you've come to do: documenting the cave. The only thing left is bringing Janira home alive.
Hakon lands a flask of alchemists fire and burns the minotaur severely. Kronis pulls back and applies some healing, the rest of the crew repositions or sends ineffectual attacks at the minotaur.
Janira remains unconscious.
The minotaur moves toward the skald who last struck it with a stone an swings its axe.
greataxe: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 4) + 4 = 10
Reducing Hakon to 0. Standing but disabled.
The minotaur burns from the alchemist fire.
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
The vines regrow around the minotaur.
reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Mika
Qadri
Lisette
Hakon -10 disabled.
Janira 8 below 0, stabilized
Minotaur -25
Kronis -8
Luxurious
Party is up. Bring us home!!!
Hakon - Skald Iconic |
Actually, not disabled! My song gives +2 con, so for the moment I have one extra HP! That said, discretion is the better part of valor, and Hakon will simply maintain his song and withdraw.
Kronis Umbrelor |
Kronis accepts the power of Hakon's song and attempts to roll deftly into the minotaur's space...
Acrobatics vs CMD +5: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
That's gonna hurt.
... and feeling Lisette's blessings, he comes up with as deft a strike as he can muster.
Unarmed Strike: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 1 = 12
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
... Well, at least he went out valiantly.
Mika Zellhwiger |
"Oi! Ugly. Over here!"
Mika moves in after dropping his sling staff (he'll pick it up after the battle), drawing his rapier as he does so.
If it takes the AoO against Kronis, I'm going to assume he can't take one against me and get in real close. If it DOESN'T attack Kronis, I'll attempt to parry (no riposte. I'm too far out then)
Parry: 1d20 + 8 - 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 - 8 = 14 Doubt that'll work, but we'll see.
RAPIER OH GOODNESS PLEASE WORK + bless: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 1 = 11
Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Parry: 1d20 + 8 - 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 - 8 = 15 Doubt that'll work, but we'll see.
Riposte: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Riposte Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Qadri of Erekrus |
Qadri engages at range again, aiming at the part of the minotaur closest to Mika.
kinetic blast to hit, point blank, vs large opponent in melee with small opponent: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 1 - 2 = 11
kinetic blast damage within point blank: 1d6 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10
I went back and re-read the "firing into melee" rules to see if I could negate it by moving up the way you can coup de grace. Didn't find anything on that, but there are other nuances I had forgotten. I copy / pasted them below. Not expecting a retcon of the earlier miss, just a FYI.
Shooting or Throwing into a Melee
If you shoot or throw a ranged weapon at a target engaged in melee with a friendly character, you take a –4 penalty on your attack roll. Two characters are engaged in melee if they are enemies of each other and either threatens the other. (An unconscious or otherwise immobilized character is not considered engaged unless he is actually being attacked.)
If your target (or the part of your target you’re aiming at, if it’s a big target) is at least 10 feet away from the nearest friendly character, you can avoid the –4 penalty, even if the creature you’re aiming at is engaged in melee with a friendly character.
If your target is two size categories larger than the friendly characters it is engaged with, this penalty is reduced to –2. There is no penalty for firing at a creature that is three size categories larger than the friendly characters it is engaged with.
GM Weenerton |
Thanks for the refresher. Couple minor stuff I didn't realize. Thanks. The minotaur is in melee and threatening Mika (small) and Kronis (medium) so the penalty would still be -4.
Lisette Jacquetta Allegria |
Lisette, after stepping forward, will cast another command (DC 16 WILL) on the minotaur, commanding it to FLEE! If it rolls 10 or higher on the initial save, she'll immediate-action quibble to force ANOTHER reroll (DC 15 WILL negates). Flee means it runs away from me (provoking AOOs).
GM Weenerton |
More movement and some missed attacks highlight this round.
The minotaur took a swipe at Kronis as he moved in.
greataxe: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
And Kronis lives to fight another round.
Lisette forces her will on the minotaur.
will save vs command: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The minotaur blankly lowers it's axe, turns, and runs at high speed back into the forest.
AOO from Kronis and Mika, please.
Mika Zellhwiger |
AoO: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
"Take that vile creature. Now get back here so I can stab you again!"
GM Weenerton |
Since it's fleeing this round anyone can make a ranged attack at it with a 60 ft distance.
Hakon - Skald Iconic |
He is in rough terrain, so wouldn't it be 30 feet?
Hakon winds up and launches a long bomb with Janira's last alchemist's fire.
Range Touch Attack: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 2 - 4 = 12
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
If he is only 30 feet away, that will be a 14 to hit instead. If it does hit, he will burn for another 1d6 on my turn unless he takes a standard action and makes a DC15 reflex save to stamp out the flames. He also needs a new reflex save vs. the entangle.
GM Weenerton |
Mika lands a blow as the minotaur attempts to flee, compelled by Lisette. Hakon tosses an alchemist fire in its wake and lands a burning flask on its back. It picks up speed and seems to fade off in the distance. You wait a pregnant moment, hearing only the sway of grass in the breeze. Nothing.
The minotaur has fled. Combat over.
Janira gasps trying to catch her breath. I've nev.. Oh my goodn.. What just happe... She stops finally and collects herself for a moment. You saved my life. I felt the essence leaving my body, it hurt so much. You brought me back from the brink and I can never repay you. You have a friend and ally in me for all time.
Qadri of Erekrus |
We should step back into the sanctuary of the cave in case it comes back.
GM Weenerton |
Janira offers a hand to Qadri. We should head back to the Grand Lodge. There is much to record. Minotaurs are prideful creatures. To flee is defeat. It will not return. Come with me and tell me the stories of your discovery.
---
Please describe the completion of your mission to Janira on the walk back to home base. I'll cap it after everyone posts about their experience. I'm out of the country and will try to do chronicles and reporting when I get back. Outside chance I can do it during downtime at work abroad.
Lisette Jacquetta Allegria |
Lisette shows Janira her notes about the carvings to Aroden on the walls, the diorama of Absalom and the minor rituals the Pathfinders were able to complete, and the details of what she learned from the deaf gillman about their ties to the cave, as well as what the gillman knew of the cave's history.
Kronis Umbrelor |
Kronis does not speak much on their way back to the Lodge, interjecting only once or twice to embellish on something Lisette has said. He is pensive the entire trip, barely acknowledging the others.
Mika Zellhwiger |
"...and then I jumped the gap like it was nothin! The lizards didn't even have a chance at that point! They came up ta me, tried ta take a swing and I blocked it! Just like that, I blocked it! Then I stabbed it dead! Then the next one turned to me, eyes red with rage about his friend passing, and I tried to stab that one too..."
Mika never really gets to the important things, and mostly talks about the cool "fightin skills" he got to display.
Qadri of Erekrus |
Qadri's report is fairly brief when covering the journey to the cave, but goes into great detail regarding the formations and types of stones within the cave; the likely age of the carvings; what tools were probably used to carve them; and their how long the carvings will last based on observed water levels, the rate of mineral deposits dripping down the walls, the resilience of that particular stone type. It will cover the kobolds briefly and mention the difficulty of engaging in ranged combat without first coordinating with one's melee specialists and end with a glowing compliment as to the resiliency of halflings - almost dwarf-like.
profession: miner for report on cave: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
lol - now the dice finally warm up!
Hakon - Skald Iconic |
Hakon will say little about their adventures for the first part of their travels. On the last night before they arrive, he will speak softly with Janira and hand her a piece of paper. A few moments later, the pair approach the fire. Hakon pulls out his horn and begins playing, with Janira joining in singing after a few bars. The song starts out light and medium tempo, detailing their initial journey and the battle with the snakes. After Janira leads the minotaur off, the tempo drops and the song becomes sombre, talking about the reverence of the gillman and the decaying murals. The song begins to build in tempo and intensity as it describes the fight with the Kobolds, climaxing with the fight versuses the savage minotaur and the brave actions of the Pathfinders to save Janira from the beast.
Luxurious the Vine Leshy! |
Please describe the completion of your mission to Janira on the walk back to home base. I'll cap it after everyone posts about their experience. I'm out of the country and will try to do chronicles and reporting when I get back. Outside chance I can do it during downtime at work abroad.
After retrieving Heffalump, Luxurious shows Janira the written notes and the rubbings of the Arodenite scriptures in the cave. The Leshy points out the significance of the water inside the cave and that gillmen seem to enjoy water even more than plants do.
GM Weenerton |
Three days following your test with Janira, you are summoned to a ceremony led by the Masters of Sword, Spell, and Scroll. Kreighton Shaine, who invited you to your confirmation speaks, Congratulations, Pathfinders. You have performed admirably and expertly. Janira has shared your reports of the gillmen’s cave as expected and we are quite impressed with your thoroughness and creativity. May we present to you a personalized wayfinder to signify you as a Pathfinder in the world. Remember always our principle duties: explore, report, and cooperate. Good luck on your future adventures.
Kronis Umbrelor |
Kronis bows to Kreighton Shaine, and before leaving, shakes hands with each of his fellow Pathfinders. "Excellent performance out there, all of you. I only hope I upheld my end so admirably. I must return to Lepidstadt and speak with my superiors. Now that I am a full-fledged member of the Society, it will be difficult to split my time between them. I must determine where I will be needed the most often -- here in Absalom, or back home. For now, I bid you each farewell, but I do hope to see you all again." He bows before straightening stiffly and striding out of the hall to begin his long journey home.
