Destiny’s Call

Welcome to the new thread. Seeing that everyone is now vetted I am going to post the intro and pray it works this time around. I apologize for the delay, but you can't always anticipate the Paizo forums. Without further delay, hopefully, i present Destiny's Call.

Thank you for that. I read the spoiler and was a little lost as to what action I wanted to take, that PM helps me frame my thoughts a lot.

Is the color-coding thing too obnoxious? I just thought it would be an easy way to tell languages apart. Blue for Shoanti, red for Dwarven, and regular black for Common. If it's too garish, let me know and I'll stop.

OOOH! We have two paired up already! All I have so far for a partner is a bartender making lovey eyes at me. He seems pretty harmless though, so I let him down easy.

Dun dun duuuuuun...the bartender is Berta in disguise!!!

All I know is that Caro can only do this for so long. She's not bad with people, but she's already almost at the end of her rope internally as to how long she can act like a normal person. She's a bit like Sheldon Cooper but with the ability to have social skills when she tries hard enough. (not as irritating, just the same level of respect for social skills vs science)

I'm glad you are enjoying the introduction. The main goal here is for everyone to have fun. As fare as the color is concerned, i'm not sure if it is the browser that I am using or what, but the color doesn't show. Instead I see brackets and word red or blue. You could just notate what language you are using and place the statement is brackets or parentheses. What ever you decide, I will roll with it.

I would just like to say, even though this just started, I am already extremely happy that I submitted to this campaign. I thought it had huge potential, and already it feels like it's gonna deliver, even though it's still less than an hour in game time for me.

Are you using the Paizo Forums browser addon? That's what lets me do that, I believe. Either way, I'll figure something out. Once interaction starts with other players, I can just put statements not in Common in spoilers, and for now I'll just state when she's changing languages. :)

I did. I tried refreshing multiple times over the span of about 20 minutes, even emailed customer service about it. I tried glancing at other threads that were posting at the same time, and I couldn't see theirs either. I think maybe it had something to do with the time? I posted right around the time switch for daylight savings. Anyway, I see them now, so I apologize for the double post.

Isn't a problem. If it persists I would look into it. If not, I would chalk it up to the wonky Paizo web.

I'm glad everyone is having fun with it. This is my first attempt at starting everyone as spread out as this, but I figured it would allow a little individual game play, some expansion on the character's background, and the ability to generate some personal hooks. I am assuming that everyone now sees why I didn't want to disclose the starting location. And why I pressed for flushed out backgrounds. In this game, your background is not just fluff. It actually effects the character in a dynamic way. )


Time and Travel.

I have been thinking about traveling distance, the time necessary to accommodate the travel, and the time sink between characters beginning their travel. Although hand waving travel is always an option, I personally would prefer to use that as a last option. This leaves me with a dilemma that frankly boarders game stagnation. I don’t want to poof characters around the Inner Sea, nor do I wish to role-play a two month excursion at sea. Then there are characters who are not partaking in the travel time. Taking all this into consideration, I believe a down time mechanic to be the best option to accommodate the differences in time.

As it stands, each character will continue role-playing up to the point that they secure passage to wherever they are attempting to go. At that point the character will be considered in rout. When everyone who is traveling is considered in rout, I will begin the down time mechanic. During the downtime mechanic, characters can utilize profession, craft, research something, gather information, or work on a project that would normally take more time than a day by day game would allow.

As travelers reach their intended destinations, I will pipe in with some description and allow the player to make decisions on what they would like to do. When the role play options diminish, we will go back into the down time mechanic. When travel no longer becomes an issue, I will bring the downtime mechanic to an end and resume the day by day pace. I am hopping this speeds up some of the game play and allows characters the opportunity to utilize some of their skills that require a significant amount of time. Is this acceptable with everyone?

Works for me too. Which mechanic will we be using for identifying income from professions or crafting for those of us not currently travelling? There's several out there from the simple PFS day job rolls all the way up to the detailed downtime rules in Ultimate Campaign where you can establish businesses and manage goods/influence/labor/wages etc. I'm guessing you're going to be somewhere between those two, or have your own plan.

With that in mind, is there any chance I could opt to redo some of my starting gear? I bought three scrolls at full value, but would prefer to craft them if possible.

I do plan on making down time a normal thing. It will normally be at the groups discretion so it doesn't conflict with any time sensitive missions or agendas. In this particular case, we are looking at travel times that border 240 to 480 miles. Generally, sea faring ship will cover about 40 miles per day if all conditions are favorable. So in the best case scenario, we may have 1-2 weeks of down time and in the worst case it could be as high as a month or two, depending on where you are traveling and what form of travel you are using. Normally passage on a ship ranges from 1 to 2 silver per. mile, but I have decreased this a bit in order to compensate for it happening in the beginning of the adventure.

As fare as crafting is concerned, I have no problem with Tiasar reducing the cost he paid for the scrolls to what it would have cost to craft them. Assume this crafting was done before the game began, so it wont affect any crafting you would like to do during transit.

As fare as taking crafting as a skill, that's entirely up to you. It will likely come into play at some point.

Excellent. Sounds good.

This game seems very dedicated to realism, which is an imposing challenge but very rewarding.

It's also nice to actually be able to take advantage of crafting feats for once!

If that is the case I would ask if I could trade my background skill appraise for profession (cartographer) if I can. I would think I'd have a few maps of the areas I've been to and will pay for them accordingly. A map of Magnimar and the mountain citadel including the areas around them and a partial map of Sothis. I don't think I was in Edo long enough to sit down and work. Thoughts?

So far anything that's Caro-specific has been sent to me in PM not gameplay. I see the spoilers as just a way to compress the thread a bit and have been reading them all assuming any REAL spoilers will be in PM.

Poor GM. I just sent him a six-point series of questions / business plan for setting up shop in town just in order to pay for room and board and make contacts. He's gonna get really tired of my OCD attention to detail.

This is correct. Right now I am using the spoilers to post for (6) variants of game play without having multiple posts that line the walls. It is ok for you to read the spoilers, as I only post things in them that I don't feel is overly private. If I feel something is relative and needs to be private, I will use a PM.

I assume this doesn't need to be said, but I'm going to put it out there just in case. The only thing I ask, seeing everyone here seems to be experienced, is that you separate what you know from what your character knows.

I just found out I have to take trip out of town for a family emergency and should be back about Sunday evening. I'm unsure how often I can be online but will try to keep up.

Because things are separated, I don't see this to be a problem. I have been posting links as a whole, but I am more than willing to separate them out if necessary. That being said I will not be posting to the game play thread tonight. I will be resuming sometime tomorrow.

On a different note. I have posted a new link at the top of the thread, which should add some options for downtime. These options will be in addition to things you can normally do, like profession and craft. I took what I thought would fit in this game out of Paizo's standard downtime mechanic, but I modified it to eliminate the different types of currency that it uses. I felt the original mechanic was a bit difficult to track and maintain, so I simplified it a bit.

Now that I'm on the road, it looks like I'll be able to get online at least once a day. I shouldn't have an issue keeping up at all.
