Hey Bookrat, so Quinnet's current actions are actually a strong trigger for Charlemange, probably enough of one to take him back to his earlier days and it will actively pull him away from investigating the mine for a bit.
I don't know if you'd prefer put this on hold for the moment or role play this conversation out or if you'd rather a few back and forth quips with some rolls mixed in. I'd be happy to do this either in spoiler fashion or over on Discord. However you're feeling.
Drot'ook
Fun fact, I used to make armor for the Armored Combat League (ACL). I'll have to see if I have pictures of the first Brigandine I ever made. It's really a brilliant answer to plate armor that you can't don on your own.
Charlemange
Sorry about my sudden absence. I had finals this week and that combined with some last minute studying ate up my time.
bookrat
It's all good! I hope you did well!
I never got anything done during finals week. I once even had a club hold an "emergency meeting" during finals week and they were super mad at me for not going. Sorry - studying for finals is more important than attending a meeting for a school club, especially when you could have easily held it the following week.
Charlemange
Hmm, the fight doesn't seem to be going too great for us. If people call for help, Charles will send down the icy blade with someone. If not, then good luck.

Merry Christmas everybody! I will be traveling tomorrow and going out of the US here to Canada tomorrow and until after the new year. Service will be kind of spotty and going up and down. I suspect I'll be able to update while I'm up there but no promises. Enjoy the holidays!
Tesswyn
Drot, in the Discord channel the GM said the demons' Defense is only 10, so your attack should hit!
Charlemange
Okay, I'm back from my trip and no longer sick. Ready to get back to fighting some demons and keeping a frightened little girl alive.
Tesswyn
Drot, don't forget the boon to your Strength challenge roll from Charles's blessing spell.
Charlemange
Yes, that sounds good. Unfortunately this morning my girlfriend had a bit of a family emergency which woke us up after only half a night of sleep, so I won't be free until late today.
Charlemange
Alright, for tomorrow I have a meeting with my boss around 1 pm, but after that, around 2 pm I could be free and on the computer for the discord chat.
Charlemange
The text bit would actually be a lot faster. But I must apologize again, I was up much later and slept a few hours longer than I thought I would today plus I didn't get my car back from the shop yet. I will probably closer to 4 before I'm free today.
bookrat
It's all good!
Ok, so I've browsed through the religion book, called Uncertain Faith.
I have some ideas from it, and I've made an opening post for the beginnings of your quest. Depending on how your PC responds will dictate the nature of the quest and potentially alter the very fabric of the world.
I hope you enjoy this. :)
Charlemange
This is an interesting dilemma. I'm sure if I was playing a different character I would have done the request but Charles is a character who absolutely refuses to do that sort of thing which he sees as pure evil.
bookrat
That was the decision which would alter the fabric of the world. There's rumors that the New God was actually created by the Demon Lord to create more chaos and open the veil. If you had chosen the sacrificial option, that would have become true and your path would have been darker.
Instead, the path you chose made the New God and the Martyr legitimate deities in the world who are actively fighting the Demon Lord, and your decision has caused the world to become a little better, giving it a greater chance of repelling the Demon Lord.
Tesswyn
Yay! Thanks for not dooming the world, Charles!
Charlemange
That is so cool! I love how you made the 3rd truth of the New God, • The divine depends on mortals, not the other way around, matter on such an important scale from this one decision. That was such an amazing meta narrative choice and I'm glad the fight the darkness with blood sacrifices bit was not what was happening here.
Also, hooray, the world is a fair bit less frightening than it could have been considering the Cult of the New God is the largest cult religion in the empire.
Charlemange
I gave it some thought given the story and what happened, I believe that Charles taking on the roll of a paladin for his Expert Path is more in keeping with what occurred here than becoming a cleric or oracle.
If we had been given more downtime like after the first arc, then I would probably have gone with cleric as his Expert path. If I had chosen the more blind faith and darker route by sacrificing Valentine then I probably would have chosen Oracle as his choice.

I'm just waiting to find the time to write up the next part. I've been unexpectedly busy the last few days. Had an opportunity this weekend to repair my sprinkler system, and I took it.
As for the mysterious door - I'm not entirely sure what's behind it. The module leaves it open to anything. I've asked a few forums and no one has given an idea that I like. So I'm open to ideas!
Charlemange
Well I'd hate to be too biased in my opinions but typically when my players manage to go through and defeat the most challenging room for a dungeon crawl or defeat the heart of a nest of monsters they tend to come across where treasures may be kept. These could be your typical enchanted weapons and armor that maybe the enemy couldn't use yet or didn't recognize the importance of or it may just be riches. Of course given the enchanted goods we already came across it might not seem appropriate for more of that.
This of course varies depending on what sort of monster was there, in the case of a nest of monsters it tends to be the remains and gear of those who have previously ventured and died there. For extortionist type enemies such as trolls and monstrous humanoids it's goods and other valuables they like to keep.
It might be a site of power that may have helped to draw the creatures there in the first place but could be something they might not be able to use.. In one game I have been part of there was a ritual site we discovered after a harrowing battle which allowed for the group to gain the favor of Desna and gain a permanent stat boost to either Wisdom or Charisima. The ritual made all of our eyes glow with a pale silver moonlight and after the effect took place our irises were a pale silver. Admittedly in this game the effects of a stat boost are far more apparent so that may be too powerful here.
Another option could be the site of an artifact/object of power that the demons simply couldn't use.
Or it may be a prison holding future sacrifices and some people are those who disappeared during an earlier collapse. These people may well have died if we simply left without checking.

Since this is SotDL we are talking about, I assume it leads to some place horrible. 0.o
Charlemange
You might be right, Tesswyn. But I might have also talked myself into seeing what's beyond the doorway too.
Hey Bookrat, when Charles effectively became a Paladin in that moment, it wasn't like leveling up in some games where you are suddenly back to full health and energy is it? He's still just as drained of magic and wounded as he was before but his potential capacity is now higher, right?
This answer is actually important as this could determine whether or not Drot and Tesswyn's words pull him back to the reality of their situation and he exits the cave with them or he feels powerful and tells them to press on to safety while he moves on through the blue shimmering field to see if he can move past it.
Also, what can he see beyond the field, if anything?
bookrat
The doorway looks something like this:
Not exactly, as there's no plants and it is underground, but the blue field is opaque and you can't see through it.
Regarding the level up, you just gain a higher capacity. I will give you extra HP in relation to the difference between current and Max. Typically in this game you don't level up in the middle of something.
Charlemange
Ooh, wow! Yeah okay I will not be stepping through that on my own.
Tesswyn
Level up!
+1 Agility, +1 Intellect
+1 Perception, +4 Health, +1 Power
Profession: Religious (Initiate of the Old Faith)
Magic: You learn the Divination tradition.
New Spell: Epiphany
Read the Signs: When you would use an action, you can use a triggered action to search for omens. Make a Perception challenge roll with 1 bane. On a success, you gain 1 Insanity. Instead of becoming frightened from gaining Insanity in this way, you instead make attack rolls and challenge rolls with 1 boon and you impose 1 bane on attack rolls made against you. The benefit lasts for a number of rounds equal to your Insanity total. On a failure, you must wait 1 minute before you can use Read the Signs again.
I've chosen to learn to read and write High Archaic as my windfall. I'm working on my story now, will post soon!
Tesswyn
Thanks! It was fun to write!
Would now be a good time to get our new player started with character creation?
Tesswyn
Just went back through the gameplay thread. We didn't get any treasure during that last adventure aside from the magical items. Drot, don't forget to read that puzzle book and increase your Intellect!
Charlemange
To be fair, the magical weapons we got are pretty awesome. Not to mention we leveled up. I'd say that was pretty good overall. No practical wealth though, we definitely lost out there.
Also, drat. I had thought fortunes were able to build up as you acquired them. I was carefully saving mine for a potentially awesome character moment where everything just went his way either in a completely unbelievable moment of heroic success against the odds or a heartfelt hold the line against the overwhelming darkness for a few impossible seconds before probably dying.
Now that I know my epic hero moment hopes are dashed and we have to use them or be unable to get any more, I'll try to use it the next time it would be thematically appropriate.
Tesswyn
Yeah, not saying the magical stuff isn't cool, just commenting that there's no coins to split up this time. :)
Charlemange
True and it sort of feels like we might need that sort of wealth more than ever now.
Hey Bookrat, so is what Drot'ook doing now a current part of the game or something he's done before hand?
Also, regarding all of our NPC allies, are we sort of leaving them behind on this next part? I know we didn't really get too much of a chance to interact with them, particularly myself with Valentine, but are we still going to get to interact with them more?
Or is the campaign going to go back focusing on just us now? Or will there be a sort of split in the scenario "While our heroes are off in the wilderness dealing with scenario A, here's what our supporting cast members are doing with scenario B..."?
bookrat
There was actually a lot of gold you guys could have taken - a whole forge's worth! But no one grabbed any. :)
Re: Drot. This section is a part of Drot's level up story. We had discussed it in PM on discord.
Re: NPCs. I've been going module by module so far, and hadn't thought of what to do with the NPCs. However, if you guys want to set up a base of operations, we can certainly do that. A place to plant the NPCs down where you go out and come back. Stop leaving behind a trail of detroyed towns. :)
Re: New player. This would be a perfect time!
Charlemange
... oh right. We lost one of our NPC's when he was covered in molten gold. It was such a hectic time that I suppose it didn't actually cross my mind at all.
Drot'ook
It is a sad day for Drot and myself but I think all in all it was worth the pain. Lem was a fun npc and I hope the joke was not wasted on the party. x3
Tesswyn
I'm considering starting a SotDL game on these boards. If I do so, would you all be interested in playing in it?
