Guys go with the spirit of this or I'll have to vet every piece of gear. Part of this set up is you are supposed to not have all of your starting gear. Fredric is going to find a hole in his bag with a lot of gear gone in the fall.

No one should have more than a days worth of food.

Fair enough. I think some stuff lost is the best option for Fredric as I envisioned him basically having just arrived. And he could plausibly have not realised this yet, being both focused on immediate threats and not very perceptive.

Well, if we're supposed to have very little gear (as opposed to what we would have been carrying that day) I'll happily leave more stuff behind than I mentioned in the gameplay thread.

Claire was intending to try to join the crusades today (which is why she has all of her combat gear instead of just her rapier and scrolls), but I'll pretend she forgot her bow and arrows at home in her excitement, and that her holy water shattered in the fall. I imagined her as that teenager who carries her backpack with personal effects in it everywhere, so no one (MOM) snoops into her journal or her makeup kit or anything. But, I'll instead say she left it behind for the occasion. I had already lit a torch before you mentioned we might not have everything so I kept it.

That reduces her gear to:

I made a sheet here and put everything on it. It's not fancy like the other one (a master of spreadsheets I am NOT). It doesn't contain anything that I was sure someone claimed: Davok used a potion of cure light wounds and kept the other, Claire claimed a potion of cure light wounds and lesser restoration since no one else wanted it. Claire also claimed two pieces of jewelry that she's wearing, but she won't keep. They're still on the list so that we can sell them at a later date. And Sariel, did you claim the arrows? I think so, but I wasn't sure so they're still on the loot list.

Everyone take a look at the unclaimed loot and take whatever you want. Remove it when you do. Of particular note is the masterwork backpack, the caltrops, and the masterwork warhammer.

And... I think that's all I need to say. Haha.

Since the dwarf is ranting about hidden bodies I'll remind the all Paladin party that detect evil has conditions and reacts to different creatures differently... normal humanoids wont register under it unless they have four hit dice or higher (bar them being clerics, antipaladins etc).

An interesting meta-question is whether our characters are aware of those limitations. Presumably, they've possessed the ability to detect evil for a period of time prior to now, and it's reasonable to assume they would have an empirical basis to know that sometimes humans register as evil, and sometimes they don't. On the other hand, we're only level 1 paladins, so there's also an argument that we don't understand our full potential or the limitations of our abilities.

I say this because it came up in another game, where the paladin player didn't understand what a "faint" evil aura means, and their character then took that to mean that the target wasn't entirely evil, but redeemable. That was an interesting moment because it was actually the player who misunderstood the nature of the spell, with the character applying their own interpretation to the result.


Generally I'd say you know how your spell works but people can feel free to imagine their fresh faced paladin might not grasp the fine details.

Yeah, are you sure Claire's Intelligence is 10? That seems... off. :)

Anyway, my head-canon for the HD and creature type affecting detect evil is it represents how redeemable they are. An undead or outsider is highly unlikely going to be able to see the light, so it's safe to make judgments based on a detection spell. Higher levels of anything else are more set in their ways and unwilling to give up on the philosophies and methods that allowed them to achieve the power.

Yup! Claire's got UMD. She'll take both the scrolls and the dagger. I'm fine with Davok taking the cloak if he wants it. I don't have a ranged weapon right now, so she could take the crossbow, but only if no one else wants it. She's not a great shot and she prefers her rapier.

I think some gear would be welcome, but Davok at least can't afford what he wants, which is a backpack, bedroll, 6 days worth of trail rations, and 50 ft. of hemp rope.

And I'm not sure if Freric can afford what he wants, which is a backpack, rope and grapple hook.

So let's try this. Anyone who wants to buy anything here, total up how much it is. Then we'll add the total together and we'll trade double the worth of that from the current loot sheet. (I'm assuming we'll have to double it, since mechanically we'd sell it at half price for gold.)

Claire's going to trade in the dwarf's statuette. Since it's a trade good it should count as 75 gp to spend here. (It's the cheapest useless item we have).

About the loot: since no one had anything else to add we'll pay them in coin instead of trading the idol. Claire will give them 4 platinum and 3 gold. I've already removed the coin from our inventory.

Any volunteers to help Claire carry it all? (I'm volunteering all of you! Haha.) Claire needs someone to carry the hammer and ten pitons, and everyone to chip in to help carry the bedrolls, food, and water.
