Aye, it’s sometimes nice not having too much on a deity. Less constraining. Though prestidigitation is needed for Listerine. As the goddess of minty breath she demands much from her paladins.

And nice feat! It’s very flavorful. A straightforward way to handle locked and trapped chests. Plus for a skill point starved party, it allows disable device with only 1 skill point.

But that's better than when you were worshipping Katydid. Proper camoflage can be very feat intensive.

Hold up! Davok is a half orc?

“Fey Thoughts (1 RP): Select two of the following skills: Acrobatics, Bluff, Climb, Diplomacy, Disguise, Escape Artist, Fly, Knowledge (nature), Perception, Perform, Sense Motive, Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Swim, or Use Magic Device. The selected skills are always class skills for the character. This trait replaces racial weapon familiarity.”

There we go! Perception as a class skill. You really can be out trapfinder. :)

Weapon familiarity doesn’t do that much as a paladin. Couple this with your Wis13 and Davok will have a pretty decent perception.

Yeah, I knew about the racial trait, but when I reviewed it, I didn't have a build in mind, and I certainly wasn't thinking of shoring up any overall party skill deficiencies. So I hadn't thought about it until Kaeldron reminded me of it.

I was toying with the idea of going for a crit build and using a falchion, but I went and did this, and aside from Alistair, Davok will be the only one with a Perception score worth anything, so I'll go ahead and switch out the racial trait. (My second skill for that trait will be Swim because it synergizes with Davok's Endurance feat.)

You’d really think that’d be a class skill, right?

This is one of the few times that the improvisation feat tree looks really tempting.

This is the least likely party to TPK. Everyone will have good saves and self healing. As long as we act carefully and rationally we’ll be fine.

So, the adventure will be starting soon. But we have this competition to do. I've come up with some very basic rules if you'd all like to play along.

The Competition wrote:


Crusaders, paladins, warriors, mercenaries and city-folk have all come together for this great celebration. Several competition are being held. Tests of skill and strength for the joy of the crowds and to build morale. Priests of Iomodae, as well as retired (and often crippled) crusaders have been chosen to judge those who attend. For those who do well, small prizes are handed out. Everyone is allowed to try *once* at a competition, and only once.

Every contest allows earning up to 4 points. The prizes are all given by the church of Iomodae, and are as such:

Prizes
1 point: A necklace with a small sword pendant
2 points: A necklace with a sword and sun pendant
3 points: A necklace with a lion pendant
4 points: A necklace with a shard of marble from Gundrun hanging from it

While the prizes were designed to increase crusader morale and devotion to Iomodae, among most in the city they are but badges of honor. Proof used when bragging about one's skill at arms, and thus, worth to the crusade. The number, and 'quality' of necklaces one has is something taken far too seriously by some within the crusade.

Swordplay

A very subjective contest, but a crowd favorite. Here, warriors must show a display of arms to impress an always present crowd.

* 1d20+BaB+Str or Dex Mod + Cha Mod

* DC 15: 1 point
* DC 18: 2 points
* DC 21: 3 points
* DC 24: 4 points

It is judged by a crotchety old veteran who lost his legs fighting demons. Each year he is there, and it is well known that the cheering of the crowd influences his decision.

Endurance

Outside the temple is a large sword. So large, in fact, that no man has ever wielded it. This symbol of Iomodae is as heavy as it is large. The final contest is to hold it above one's head for as long as possible...

* DC 15 Str test to pick it up: 1 point

* If picked up, 1d20+con mod to hold it for as long as you can manage

* DC 10: 2 points
* DC 15: 3 points
* DC 20: 4 points

This is judged by a priestess of Iomodae, who ensures that nothing sacrilegious happens to the sword.

Archery

A dummy has been set up, that is designed to look like a stereotypical demon. Every crusader is allowed *one* shot at it with a bow.

* Hitting the Target's Chest (hit AC12): 1 point
* Hitting the Target's Heart (hit AC 15): 2 points
* Hitting the Target's Head (hit AC 18): 3 points
* Hitting the Target's Neck (hit AC 20): 4 points

It is judged by a captain of the city's defense force. This year it is a one-eyed archer, who, because of his injury, now trains new recruits. He is still a skilled bowman, but nowhere near what he used to be before a demon took his eye and left a scar running from the top of his head down to his chin.

And there would be our contest. Three tests for each character to take part in. Something fun to write up while we wait for the campaign to start.

One test geared towards ranged characters. One test geared towards melee characters. One test that is equal for everyone. A total of 12 possible points. May the best roller win.

I've come to realise that Fredric is pretty single-minded, but is actually curious about what is around him. He's far better at assessing people than surroundings though!

With VMC, there won't be another feat til 5th level. But likely getting exotic weapon proficiency (bastard sword). Not to pick up a shield, mind. But to get an even larger bastard sword. :D -2 to hit, but 2D8 base damage. Technically, not as optimal as a greatsword or falchion, but I love the idea and it still works fine as a weapon of choice.

Your rage gives +2 hit, which cancels the oversized penalty. That should work out well, as if will show that one has to be very strong (and angry) to effectively use such an oversized weapon.

I’ve done the opening part 3 times. The campaigns keep dying right after that. I’m really glad to be in this group, as I’d really like to see what happens next.

As is, so long as we are here around this location the campaign will start perfectly fine. My idea on this competition just gives us something to do while waiting.

Even though *some of you* are burning your bad dice rolls now. Which is completely unfair. My rolling has been amazing, and I just know it means that the first combat will go south. If this was in person I’d be switching dice when the campaign starts...
