Leyten rubs his shoulder - a painful reminder of his first failed attempt at "flying."
"We might as well open it," he says as he joins his comrades. "Anyone have tools, or feel like flexing big muscles? I could always try sarcasm to cut through the lock...."

![]() |

“Oh my, I think the big muscle man over there is way ahead of you Lenten. But just to make sure...” and the deaf bird whispers an incantation under his breath to wave detect magic over the box.
Turning to the guardian, “so what is the next challenge anyway?”

GM_CariMac |

Osten manages to pop the lock off the chest and inside you find a feather token (fan), a potion of levitate, and six clear quartz crystals worth 50 gp each.
"Come my friends your next test awaits." He leads you to the next room.
The tunnel follows a downward slope to a large chamber that stands out as particularly artificial among the otherwise roughly crafted trenches and caverns of the rest of the Sandflow Source. The circular chamber is approximately 45 feet in diameter, with a clay-colored floor, rocky walls, and a ceiling that rises to at least 40 feet in height.
Eight statues ring the chamber, each sheathed in an element that clings to the figurines like an aura—constantly burning fire, a swirling cloud of fog, slate-colored stone, or a pocket of water held in place by an invisible force. Triangles etched into the floor connect matching pairs of statues. At the center of the room stands a large wooden desk with several jars on top. Some jars contain nothing more than a bit of dirt or rock, while others are grislier, containing blood or, in one case, a disembodied eye.

GM_CariMac |

Inside the room is an Oread woman Image on the Map who is disfigured with a stone arm, and a emerald eye.
Iyasset floats to the top of the chamber and watches imperiously as you enter the room.

Rumble walks into the room, nodding at his fellow oread. ”Greetings, ma’am. Am RumbleRock. Group passed tests so far,” he explained as best he could.

Laafdahni actually hits the other dog with her miss aligned ray.
Osten ties up Qiarah.
On the table there are research notes. Her notes include shorthand and arcane references that make them difficult to decipher.
Issalet doesn't appear happy that she's not deceased. "You did as asked. You taught her a lesson, and she can be removed. You passed this test. Good for you."

"She was fun," says Leyten. "And I'm glad that we're not assassins for hire." He smiles slightly at Issalet before turning his full attention to Quiarah's papers.
"Agreed," he says to Laafdahni. "We can examine these later," he adds in a whisper, "if we're allowed to take them."

GM_CariMac |

Issalet doesn't appear concerned with you taking the notes.
I'll move you forward tomorrow. I want to give everyone a chance to look around the room and such, and I know Thanksgiving may have affected posting rates.

Leyten takes a closer look at the jars, particularly the nastier-looking ones, like those with blood and a disembodied eye. "What was she trying to do with these...?" he asks uneasily. "These are the kinds of jars I'd expect to find in a hag's hovel."

GM_CariMac |

The auras around the status look interesting to Laafdahni. The magics are unusual.
"You have passed the tests. Let us go to the tribal leader. They will have the information you seek."
As you leave the area something unexpected happens.
A burst of fire at the edge of the trench flares up into several roughly humanoid shapes, all of which begin advancing toward the site’s entrance. A faint rumble of earth joins the elementals, and then a massive, stout woman made of stone appears. “The Ainsi continue to cause us trouble,” she says in a slow grumble. “And now, you ally with these flesh-things. Do you really believe them to be the prophets?”
Slowly, her rocky face shifts into a half-smile. “Prophet or not, the Goanron Triumvirate would have a use for you. Join us, and we will give you rewards that make the offerings of the Ainsi pale in comparison. The Ainsi are flighty and careless. The only certainty with the Ainsi is their tendency toward violence and treachery. Whatever they’ve promised you, they would just as soon throw you off a cliff and steal from your corpse.”
Iyasset loudly denies these accusations, and instead accuses the earth elemental of treachery and lying.
believe that members of the other tribe are fundamentally untrustworthy and violent, and both emissaries believe the accusations that they put forth against their rivals.
It's been a while since you had a chance to learn about the two tribes.
One of the primary reasons that desert travelers must frequently change their paths is to avoid the desert’s two most prominent elemental clans: the Goanron Triumvirate, comprised of air, earth, and fire elementals, and the Ainsi, a splinter faction of air elementals.

Earlier, before we leave the room...
Laafdahni narrows her eyes as she examines the statues' auras. Their unusual nature is intriguing. It takes her a few moments to realize that everyone is waiting on her to leave. "Oh, sorry. These statues are fascinating, but I suppose we do not have time to study them. Lead on."
And now, in present time...
Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
As the elementals quarrel, Laafdahni leans in to discuss the situation to her allies: "They both think the others are violent and untrustworthy and have for time out of mind. Nothing we can say or do will change that in the time we have. We are on a mission that requires haste. Switching sides at this point will be most dysfunctional."

![]() |

Osten eyes the new arrivals. "Look, as far as I'm concerned, the whole lot of ya are interlopers. But, we made a deal with them. I ain't gotta problem with you, but I ain't shyin' away from havin' one if yer gonna push the issue. You have beef with them, it don't concern us. You just stay over there doin' you and we'll all be fine. However, we still owe these guys a death in the temple here..."
