Thanks for clarifying Pendrak. Just to confirm, we should be moving our characters on your map as well?

Yes, please feel free to do so. It should be editable by anyone with the link.

GM Rolls:

Red bandit, Will save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8

The bandit dodges Regis's axe chop, but he seems to be extremely preoccupied now by Reginald's antics.

"Stop looking at me, ya weirdo!" the bandit shouts, "Boss, this mage won't stop staring at me and its getting on my last nerve."

You hear a woman's voice come in reply, "Then. Kill. Him. It isn't complicated," she says.

When Dana comes rushing forward, he never sees it coming. She smacks the bandit full on the face with the flat of her blade with a loud crack, and blood pours from his broken nose.

"And now we have the gods against us! Oh, jeez..." says the bandit, clearly demoralized.

The female voice, which proves to come from what seems to be the bandit leader, takes up a song of encouragement to her allies as she moves up behind the sleeping bandit.

Kill them quick and take their money,
Are you a bandit, or are you a bunny?"

Let's see if I can get this in while things are working. Hopefully they stay this way, though I've been told to expect instability until Friday at the earliest.

The remaining bandit never takes his eyes of Reginald, but tosses aside his bow and draws a rapier, slashing at Dana. She easily blocks his attack with her shield.

Mummy's Mask~Kingmaker ~Strange Aeons ~ Fallen Family, Broken Name I ~ Fallen Family, Broken Name II ~ Border of War

Xiao steps forward and casts her spell, and the bandit thug seems to be dazed and unable to act.

"Oh, man, this is bad," says he.

The bandit leader, meanwhile, is staring at Reginald, distracted by his response to her song as well as his strangely piercing gaze.

Dana rushes forward and swings at her fellow bard, but the bandit lady easily sidesteps her swing, though she does seem to be demoralized. Thanks to the bandit being distracted by Reginald's evil eye, Regis is able to deliver an ax blow, and Woodthorne is able to wallop the dazed bandit over the head with his quarterstaff. The bandit seems to be not only dazed, but staggered, and seems ready to drop at any moment.

Nonetheless, the bandit leader seem unwilling to surrender at this point. She steps back, reaches into her spell component pouch, draws out some small fruit tarts and a feather, and then, waving her arms and chanting a few strange phrases, casts a spell.

In order to try to expedite the exploration phase of this, since there isn't another encounter here at the estate, allow me to provide you with an overview of the rooms that don't really have anything of interest. The map has been fully revealed.

Map Key:

A1. Front Entrance

A2. Grand Hall (the room with the haunt, where you came in)

A3. Shrine to Asmodeus, thoroughly vandalized

A4. Library, only fragments of books and broken furniture remain

A5. Office (I will provide more details below)

A6. Salon, mostly destroyed by fire

A7 and A8. Side rooms, nothing but fallen plaster, dust, and cobwebs

A9. Salon, mostly intact, lit by lantern, shows signs of recent habitation

A10. Sitting room, well-lit by lanterns, and bedrolls and other personal gear are stacked along the walls

After exploring most of the rooms, the Pathfinders make their way into a small office. This once luxurious office has been thoroughly ransacked, and goblin vandals have defaced the walls and furniture. A dead crow, relatively fresh but burned and blackened, has been nailed to a plaque on the western wall. A gilded portrait frame over the desk has been covered with paint and blood, obscuring the image underneath.

Knowledge (local) DC 10:

You identify the burnt bird as the territorial mark of the Scorchfeathers goblin tribe.

As you step into the room, some very strange happens. You hear a muffled voice come from the blood-covered painting, which says, "I am Asmodea Irrica, daughter of Rutillo and heir to the House of Irrica."

Perception DC 12:

The painting seems to sit slightly askew from the wall, as though there is something behind it.

Detect Magic and Spellcraft DC 20:

The talking portrait is an animated portrait, a detailed painting of a particular intelligent creature, animated to show movement or action within the painted scene. The image reacts when questioned, with the creature turning to face the viewer and responding appropriately.

The image is a magical effect with no actual intelligence, but is programmed with up to ten 25-word verbal responses and can respond to questions if these responses seem appropriate.

For example, if one of the programmed responses is the name of the person shown in the portrait, it can answer questions such as “who are you?” and “what is your name?” If the item crafter is familiar with or has the cooperation of the creature depicted in the painting, the illusory image has the voice and mannerisms of that creature.

He casts a quick cantrip, then proclaims, "Ooo, now what we have here is an animated portrait! If we can ask it the right questions, it might have answers for us!" He then proceeds to close his eyes and start muttering to himself, trying to think of the most likely responses the spell might store.

"Alright, let's start with a name! If we know the name, we can deduce more of what it is likely to know! Yes! Wait... Oh, it's already saying its name. How convenient! Alright, what would the heir to the family know... Not what happened to the manor, too early for that. Family treasure? Be stupid to put that information in a painting anyone could walk up to and ask. Unless the family forgot what treasure they had? Or maybe it was kept in such a secret place that they had to refresh their memories every so often? Possibly...

He continues, but as his voice becomes hurried and quieter it becomes obvious he's talking to himself again. "Yes! Once we know that, we should easily be able to figure out what the password to her secret lair was. Painting obviously hiding tunnel there, probably traps, what kinds of discouragements were popular or known to be very effective during that time period, probably goes underground, worms live underground, birds eat worms, maybe I can catch some for Casovir, what spell would work best to attract worms, wait, maybe that's the trap, need a spell to repel worms specifically or we'll drive each other away potentially, how long could this tunnel be, well, what were the mining methods available, and at the end of the tunnel will be the door we have to speak the password to, don't want to give the wrong password..."

”I ... I ... I am very sorry that I was not able to push back her spell and succumbed to my emotions! Please do not think that I usually laugh like this as I am a modest and pious woman and as controllled as the Everlight and my family traditions request!“ she says hesitantly.

At Xiao's question, and again at Reginald's, the painting simply repeats the phrase, "I am Asmodea Irrica, daughter of Rutillo and heir to the House of Irrica."

You suspect that the magical portrait might not be able to hear you due to it being painted over.

DC 12 Craft (painting), DC 15 Appraise, or DC 20 Knowledge (arcana):

If the painting is properly cleaned and restored, it may be able to answer other questions as well, though such a restoration is impossible without specialized equipment.

Woodthorne carefully removes the frame from the wall, and reveals a piece of parchment affixed to the back of the portrait with alchemical glue. On it is the hastily written last will and testament of Rutillo Irrica.

See the handout in the Slides.

The Pathfinders find nothing else of value in the Irrica estate. Furthermore, they realize that the goblins were here probably about a month ago or longer. Realizing that chasing after long-gone goblins with a painting in hand and before reporting back to their venture-captain wouldn't be the best idea, the Pathfinders deal with the unconscious bandits, and then hurry on to Elidir where they are able to rest the night, and await a message from Venture-Captain Brackett.

Such a message comes the next morning, along with payment.

Rewards:

Each of the five quests assumes you return to Elidir and get a letter pointing you to the next quest. You get a different amount of gold for each quest depending on your level.

1st- 100
2nd- 150
3rd- 250
4th- 350
5th- 450

You guys can decide what dealing with the bandits means exactly (interrogating, killing, turning loose, turning in to the authorities, etc.), I just wanted to keep this moving. The letter from Brackett should now be in the Slides. You guys can make any purchases you wish while in Elidir, then you can go goblin hunting.

After they finish their preparations, the Pathfinders travel from Elidir as part of a caravan headed toward Citadel Dinyar in southern Isger. The journey is without incident. Once south of the gnome town of Umok, the group prepares to separate from the caravan to begin tracking the Scorchfeather goblin tribe.

The morning cookfire crackles softly as the caravan breaks camp and prepares to depart for Citadel Dinyar. The Chitterwood surrounds the road in all directions, but the forest is far from consistent. East of the road, burnt and dead trees still stand upright. The land to the west is snarled with low scrub in a dense weave. Irregular slashes of bare dirt and two-foot high grasses give the illusion of other roads leading off from the main track.

You see Caravan Master Jarkan, a Kalistocrat wearing the traditional white clothing, a friendly and polite man all the while you've traveled with him. Also traveling with the caravan are a pair of Druman Blackjacket guards, and Gallion Land, a Hellknight of the Order of the Godclaw traveling to Citadel Dinyar.

Knowledge (local) or Profession (merchant) DC 10:

Most trade in Isger is via the Cornerica River and its tributaries. Isger's undersized army focuses on securing the river trade, and consequently much of the hinterlands is easy prey for bandits.

Knowledge (local) or Profession (merchant) DC 15:

The few overland trade routes in use are normally traveled by heavily guarded caravans. One such route passes through the eastern Chitterwood from Umok to the Hellknight fortress of Citadel Dinyar. Hellknights often accompany such caravans as it is also the quickest route for them to get to central Isger and the capital of Elidir.

Knowledge (local) or Profession (merchant) DC 20:

Among the known threats in the Chitterwood is a tribe of goblins known as the Scorchfeathers. While the Scorchfeathers were a feared band of ravagers during the Goblinblood Wars, their hobgoblin commanders were all killed in the final months of the war and the Scorchfeathers are now a force of undirected and unpredictable mayhem.

Let me know what you want to do with the bandits at the estate, and what, if anything, you want to purchase while in Elidir. You guys can make Knowledge checks and talk to the members of the caravan, but when you are ready to set out looking for the goblins I will need Survival checks.

Did we also get an xp? Regis isn't buying anything in town. He would want to interrogate the bandits before turning them over to the authorities, specifically trying to find out if they were there for some reason more than just squatting.

Regis approaches Gallion and says "Hello Sir Gallion, what brings you in the company of Caravan Master Jarkan?

Yeah, sorry about that, technically you do receive 1 XP and 1 PP after completing the first quest. You need to complete at least 4 of them in order to get the second PP, and all of them to get all the gold and boons.

"Just traveling on to the Citadel. I work as a liaison between Elidir and the Godclaw Hellknights stationed at Citadel Dinyar," says Gallion in a deep, rough voice.

If you spend some time talking to Gallion Land he will relate to you all of the information found in the Knowledge checks up to DC 15. Also, I forgot that there was also a Knowledge (geography) part, so you'll find that below.

Knowledge (geography) DC 10:

The Chitterwood stretches more than 100 miles form east to west and nearly as far north to south. However, much of the forest was deliberately burned by Isger troops in the Goblinblood Wars to deny their enemies a refuge.

Knowledge (geography) DC 15:

Since the burning, the Chitterwood has begun to regrow in places. Thick underbrush, bare ground, and open trails under quick-growing evergreens can all be found during a few minutes' walk.

Knowledge (geography) DC 20:

The deepest reaches of the Chitterwood were never burned, nor were the numerous underground warrens. Goblinoids have been rapidly reproducing since the end of the Goblinblood Wars and have recently begun roaming farther afield.

Orst will argue that they are not the rightful authorities and have no jurisdiction here or really any proof of banditry. Questioning them about possible goblin activity in the area might make sense. But ultimately they should be let go minus their weapons of course.

"Caravans, what is with all this walking? I will get a horse."

Orst purchases a light combat trained horse. 110 gp He joins the caravan and rides along happily.
