"Life is good," says the merchant, who is dressed in immaculately clean white robes, including long white gloves, "My indentured service to the Prophets of Kalistrade is nearly at an end, and I shall receive an excellent sum of money at that time. Bandits do sometimes trouble us, but that is why I am traveling with Smith and Young." He gestures to the tough looking Druman blackjackets standing near the wagon, one sharpening his longsword, while the other strings a longbow. "And it helps that we have Sir Gallion here as well. Most expensive item... probably a whole load of darkwood that we hauled from Macridi to Elidir last year. Beautiful Palakar Forest lumber. Very rare as they only harvest a few trees a year."

The party bids the caravan master and his companions farewell, and soon heads off into the Chitterwood. You initially struggle to find the trail, spending an entire day wandering around aimlessly in the wood. The next day you stumble across what seems to have been a fairly recent goblin camp in a large clearing. The clearing was likely burnt during the Goblinblood Wars, but the ground cover has been clearly burnt away again within the past few days. A few minutes of sifting through the ashes uncovers a broken Small dogslicer, two empty ceramic jugs, and the jumbled bones of a small-sized creature.

Knowledge (nature) DC 15:

The bones likely belong to a forest bird of some type, perhaps a wild turkey.

You continue on the trail, but eventually need to rest for the night. The next day Dana takes the lead, and she guides you to place where a shallow cleft in a rocky hill appears to have provided the goblins with a resting place for the night but little to burn. The dung of several creatures is scattered about with no regard for sanitation. Near one pile of dung is a discarded string of feathers tied together as a crude headdress.

Again, the group pushes on but eventually has to rest again. On the fourth day, Regis leads to the group to a place beneath a spreading oak where the goblins made a very recent camp. The first thing to strike the senses is the scent of charred flesh and fuzz. The unplucked carcass of a small bird has been nailed to the oak tree and set on fire. Discarded scraps of food are scattered around a crude semi-circle of stones facing the tree. Among the scraps lies a small blood-smeared vial.

Detect Magic and Spellcraft DC 16:

The vial contains a potion of cure light wounds.

You push on, tracking the goblins once more. The trees thicken, and the previously wide glades narrow and disappear in this unburnt part of the Chitterwood. A loud animal screech echoes between the trunks, followed by excited laughter and cheers of triumph.

The goblins seem distracted, and you think you might be able to sneak up on them.

Take a look at the map. At this point anyone who wishes to try can attempt a DC 9 Stealth check. If successful, you may start within 30 feet of the nearest goblins and take a surprise round when combat begins. If you choose not to approach stealthily then you will begin combat where you are on the map presently. If you choose to try Stealth and fail, then no one receives a surprise round and everyone begins combat where they are on the map currently.

As the party passes through the remains of the first camp, Reginald stops pointing out the flowers long enough to remark, "Oh, that must be the skeleton of a turkey! You can tell from the way the ribcage is put together that..." and he spends the rest of the day talking about the subtle differences in bone structure between two subspecies of partridges.

At the second campsite, Reginald is too busy trying to calm a distraught Casovir and not lose his breakfast at the smell of the refuse strewn everywhere to properly identify whatever the vial contains. "Yep, that's magical," he blurts before hurrying away to get some fresh air.

As the sounds of goblins grows louder, Reginald looks at Dana and nods. "Quietly," he whispers loudly before following her lead closer. He starts mentally reviewing all the goblin puns he's been coming up with over the past several days of hiking.

Orst dismounts and secures his mount to a nearby tree. He quietly withdraws his longbow and strings it. He then looks for a vantage point from which to over watch his stealthy companions moving forward. He then notches an arrow and readies if anything appears from the noisy forest ahead.
Orst is staying put, but preparing for ranged attacks as he is able move forward in subsequent rounds. It looks like he should have one clear shot on the opening round.

Going to roll Woodthorne's Stealth (he has a +7, so there is only a 10% chance of failure) in order to keep things moving.

Most of the group is able to sneak forward, and gets into position for a perfect surprise attack, while some of the more heavily armored characters stand by to move in when the melee begins. The goblins remain unaware of the approaching Pathfinders, intent on their cruel game.

Xiao, Reginald, Regis, Woodthorne, Dana, and Orst can take either a move action or a standard action in the surprise round, and Xiao can also go ahead and take her normal action for round one. It is worth noting that there is a special action available on surprise rounds (or any round where you can only take a standard action), that is often referred to colloquially as the "partial charge." Quoting the Core Rulebook: "If you are able to take only a standard action on your turn, you can still charge, but you are only allowed to move up to your speed (instead of up to double your speed) and you cannot draw a weapon unless you possess the Quick Draw feat. You can't use this option unless you are restricted to taking only a standard action on your turn." I'm assuming that everyone readied weapons when you first heard the sound of the goblin voices from afar.

Woodthorne isn't able to land a blow on the goblin he charges, but soon after the same goblin goes into a daze, as Xiao moves up and casts her spell.

One of the goblins is mounted on a giant gecko, and she spurs her mount forward as she reaches for a vial on its belt, uncorks it with its pointy teeth, and chugs it.

Reginald huffs and puffs his way towards the sounds of his companion fiercely demanding the surrender of her foes, flinching slightly at the sound of another whack from her scimitar. She sure doesn't mess around, he observes before clearing his throat and addressing the goblin with a pink scarf wrapped around its head.

"Hey, Peabrain, do you know why goblins have such a hard time dancing?"

Reginald moves and uses his Evil Eye hex to give the pink goblin a -2 penalty to AC. Will 15 reduces the duration to 1 round.

This time the goblin manages to dodge, and Dana's blow simply smacks the goblin on his leather padded shoulder. The goblin throws away his bow, and drawing a sword, stabs Dana in the leg, cackling maniacally as he does.

Another goblin steps over and fires an arrow at the gigantic Regis, but he misses badly in his panic.

Xiao moves forward, and repeats the cantrip that she used so deftly before, this time at the mounted goblin leader, who suddenly seems to be in a daze and does nothing. Its gecko snarls threateningly at everyone.

Turning to the nearby goblin, Reginald continues, "Is it because you have two left feet?" while pointing at the goblin's shoes. He doesn't even wait to see the response to his joke before he bursts out laughing again.
